8. Failure investigation of 132 kV power transmission composite crossarms.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to investigate the cause of structural failure to the composite crossarms used in 132kV electrical power transmission lines. It was believed that the presence of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) filler had contributed to the crossarms failure. Therefore, this research examined the effect of the CaCO3 on water absorption, flexural properties and phase changes in the composite crossarm. The tests on the composite properties such as flexural strength, water absorption and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis were conducted. The flexural test was done before and after water absorption test. While the XRD was carried out to show the phase changes due to the incorporation of the CaCO3, as well as to determine the various compounds and their percentages in the composite crossarms. The findings suggest that specimens with CaCO3 had an increase in flexural strength and modulus by 75.5% and 60.7% respectively. However, the flexural properties after water absorption showed a decrease in strength. Similarly, a specimen with CaCO3 absorbed 2.06% water compared to the specimen without CaCO3 which absorbed 3.15%. The XRD analysis of the composite with CaCO3 revealed a high percentage of homogeneous phase of polymer and glass fibre when compared to the composite without CaCO3. 28. Determination of process variability by using triangular fuzzy number to minimize production lead time in a dynamic Value Stream Mapping

Abstract

This paper shows the incorporation of Value Stream Mapping (VSM) with triangular fuzzy numbers to determine variability and uncertainty in a conveyor manufacturing company. VSM is a pen and paper tool which is used to indicate wastes and bottleneck processes graphically and develop an action plan to enhance the production line. However, some weaknesses are identified in the conventional VSM where it fails to consider variability in a dynamic manufacturing environment. As such, this paper fills up the research gap by using Triangular Fuzzy Number (TFN) to illustrate time intervals, inventories and other variables of VSM operation. The purpose of this paper is to minimize total production lead time (TPLT) and total value-added time (TVAT) in the current value stream of the conveyor chain. More accurate details of variability in the dynamic manufacturing environment can be illustrated by a Triangular Fuzzy Number (TFN) of VSM. As a result, the future value stream map shows 50% and 22% reduction in TPLT and TVAT respectively compared to the current value stream. In conclusion, this paper also recommends that in order to optimize the accuracy of VSM analysis further, a discrete event simulation can be used to examine the fuzzy VSM.

Abstract

Value stream mapping (VSM) is considered as an important tool in lean manufacturing that allows analysts to visualize the actual situation that happens in the production value stream. However, in high-variety and low-volume factories, conventional VSM which is more static in nature, unable to give real vision of the variability problems concerning production process. As such, the purpose of this paper is to review the role of VSM in a dynamic context which is more efficient in today`s complex and dynamic manufacturing system.This paper discusses the conventional VSM, its applications and limitations as well as how conventional VSM integrates with computer simulation to display more dynamic behavior. Both these conventional and dynamic VSM have their own benefits and drawbacks according to their applications in the manufacturing industry. As a conclusion, this paper shows that simulation applications can help to support VSM for companies that intend to transform to lean. This work is very useful for both scholars and companies to know how much an output can be produced within the predicted lead time before making physical changes to the system in order to save both money and time.

41. Conceptual design of the car gear console panel made by glass/natural fiber reinforced hybrid polymer composite

Abstract

This study was conducted in order to enhance the quality of car gear console panel with environmentally friendly aspects by making it from glass/coir fiber-reinforced polypropylene hybrid composite. The functions and competitive benchmarking criteria were compiled and merged with the environmental requirements to produce the Product Design Specifications (PDS). The chosen polymer was compared to a benchmark material, Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS), using the Weighted Evaluation Matrix (WEM). Coir fiber and Polypropylene (PP) were found to be effective bio-composites for car gear console panel. After that, using an integrated Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ) and Morphological Chart, the conceptual design development of a coir fiber-reinforced polypropylene gear console panel was carried out, fol-lowed by final conceptual design selection utilizing an integrated Pugh Chart. The new design concept has less annular snaps, position of the screws are also changed. Coir fiber-reinforced polypropylene hybrid composites were found to be an alternate material for eco-friendly car gear panel. The final conceptual design of car gear console panel selected on the basis of TRIZ solution which was finalized by using Morphological chart consists of change in the shape of the panel from trapezoidal shape to rectangular shape. The number of annular snaps used was reduced to two from four and number of screws was increased to four from two. Screw positions were distributed evenly on top, bottom, left and right. The assembly structures were kept same as previous that is three.

Abstract

Cutting fluids are instrumental as manufacturing sectors achieved a variety of aims. As human rights and environmental protection have become a matter of global concern, end milling under dry conditions is becoming an important approach. However, cutting speed and depth of cut have different correlations on cutting temperature and surface roughness. Thus, end milling without using cutting fluids will result in catastrophes to cutting temperature, surface hardness, and surface roughness when cutting speed and depth of cut changes are not considered precisely. Consequently, optimising these two factors during end milling under dry conditions is an important aspect for manufacturing sectors. In this manuscript, 3² factorial experimental design were applied, whereas the significance of cutting speed and depth of cut, as well as their optimal combinations was analysed by analysis of variance (ANOVA) and desirability function analysis (DFA). The results indicated that cutting speed is the most significant factor on surface roughness, whereas depth of cut is the most dominant factor affecting cutting temperature and surface hardness. Furthermore, optimal combinations that minimise cutting temperature and surface roughness, and maximise surface hardness are obtained at the highest cutting speed and the lowest depth of cut.
