2. Introduction: Urban revolutions in the age of global urbanism

Abstract

This special issue, papers presented at an Urban Studies Foundation-funded conference in Jakarta (March 2011), examines the current ‘urban century’ in terms of three revolutions. Revolutions from above index the logics and norms of mainstream global urbanism, particularly the form they have taken as policymakers work with municipal officials worldwide to organise urban development around neoliberal norms. Revolutions from below refer to the multifaceted contestations of global urbanism that take place in and around cities, ranging from urban street demonstrations and occupations (such as those riveting the world in early 2011 when these papers were written) to the quotidian actions of those pursuing politics and livelihoods that subvert the norms of mainstream global urbanism. It also highlights conceptual revolutions, referencing the ongoing challenge of reconceptualising urban theory from the South – not simply as a hemispheric location or geopolitical category but an epistemological stance, staged from many different locations but always fraught with the differentials of power and the weight of historical geographies. Drawing on the insights of scholars writing from, and not just about, such locations, a further iteration in this ‘southern’ turn of urban theorising is proposed. This spatio-temporal conjunctural approach emphasises how the specificity of cities – their existence as entities that are at once singular and universal – emerges from spatio-temporal dynamics, connectivities and horizontal and vertical relations. Practically, such scholarship entails taking the field seriously through collaborative work that is multi-sited, engages people along the spectrum of academics and activists, and is presented before and scrutinised by multiple publics.

Abstract

COVID-19 lockdowns in early 2020 reduced human mobility, providing an opportunity to disentangle its effects on animals from those of landscape modifications. Using GPS data, we compared movements and road avoidance of 2300 terrestrial mammals (43 species) during the lockdowns to the same period in 2019. Individual responses were variable with no change in average movements or road avoidance behavior, likely due to variable lockdown conditions. However, under strict lockdowns 10-day 95th percentile displacements increased by 73%, suggesting increased landscape permeability. Animals’ 1-hour 95th percentile displacements declined by 12% and animals were 36% closer to roads in areas of high human footprint, indicating reduced avoidance during lockdowns. Overall, lockdowns rapidly altered some spatial behaviors, highlighting variable but substantial impacts of human mobility on wildlife worldwide.

18. Kinderschutz - ein Thema für die Sprachtherapie? Kindliche Sprachentwicklung im Kontext von Gewalt und Vernachlässigung

Abstract

Hintergrund: Sprachtherapeut*innen haben nicht nur einen therapeutischen Behandlungsauftrag, sie unterliegen ebenso berufsethischen und gesetzlichen Verpflichtungen zum Schutz von Kindern. Diese Aspekte stellen einerseits eine Chance für den Kinderschutz dar, sorgen andererseits aber auch für große Herausforderungen. Das Thema Kinderschutz findet in der Lehre von Sprachtherapeut*innen bisher keine Beachtung. Um dem Schutzauftrag jedoch gerecht werden zu können, ist eine fachspezifische Auseinandersetzung unabdingbar.Material und Methoden: Auf der Basis eines systematischen Reviews wurden Erkenntnisse zur kindlichen Sprachentwicklung im Kontext von Gewalt und Vernachlässigung zusammengetragen. In einem nächsten Schritt wurden die gesammelten Daten als Grundlage für die Entwicklung eines Beobachtungsbogens für Sprachtherapeut*innen im Kinderschutzfall (BeoKiwo) aufbereitet. Für das systematische Review wurden Sprachstandserhebungen recherchiert, deren Pro-band*innen Gewalt und/oder Vernachlässigung erlebt haben und zum Untersuchungszeitpunkt nicht älter als 6,0 Jahre alt waren. Weitere Auswahlkriterien der Studien waren: Repräsentativität der untersuchten Stichproben, Validität, Reliabilität und Transparenz im methodischen Vorgehen.Ergebnisse: Die Folgen von Gewalt und Vernachlässigung auf den kindlichen Spracherwerb zeigen sich an Verzögerungen in allen Sprachentwicklungsbereichen. Eine über einen längeren Zeitraum anhaltende Vernachlässigung verursacht die größten Schäden im pragmatischen Bereich. Außerdem sind das Alter des Kindes zum Zeitpunkt der Gefährdung sowie die Dauer der Gewalt- und Vernachlässigungsperioden entscheidende Variablen für die Auswirkungen auf die Sprachentwicklung.Diskussion: Gewalt und Vernachlässigung in entscheidenden Entwicklungsfenstern können schädliche und dauerhafte Auswirkungen auf Bedingungsfaktoren für den Spracherwerb haben: Auf Seiten der Umwelt sind dabei die häufig desorganisierte Eltern-Kind-Bindung sowie ein mangelhaftes Kommu
