Abstract

Die vorliegende Studie unternimmt eine Neubewertung der Geschichte der Psychiatrie in Japan durch die kritische Anwendung von Michel Foucaults Theorie der Disziplinarmacht. Zuerst wird die Gesellschaft der angehenden Meiji-Periode als Disziplinargesellschaft definiert, indem speziell auf Diskurse der Strafpraxis und der generellen sozialen Reformen im Zeitalter der Modernisierung Japans eingegangen wird. Nach einer Rekapitulation der Entstehungsgeschichte der Psychiatrie kommt es im zweiten Schritt zu einer dekonstruktiven Lektüre einiger zentraler Primärquellen aus der Phase der Formierung der japanischen Psychiatrie. In einem für die japanische Psychiatriegeschichtsschreibung neuartigen Zugang wird auf marginale Textstellen fokussiert, in denen sich deren speziell konstitutiver Charakter für die Etablierung eines psychiatrischen Diskurses in Japan herauskristallisiert. Es zeigt sich, dass diese Fragmente, die stark von der biologischen Psychiatrie des deutschsprachigen Raumes beeinflusst waren, im besonderen Maße die Gefährlichkeit geisteskranker Subjekte für die Nation hervorheben. Zusätzlich wird die Institutionalisierung der Psychiatrie aufgrund eines juristischen Dilemmas beschleunigt, das in der Einführung eines neuen Rechtssystems nach europäischem Vorbild wurzelt. Die verschiedenen Fäden der Analyse verknoten sich im diskursiven Bruch zwischen zwei Gesetzen, die den Umgang mit Geisteskranken in der japanischen Gesellschaft im 20. Jahrhundert kodifizierten. Es handelt sich um das Gesetz zur Obhut von Geisteskranken von 1900 und dem Gesetz für psychiatrische Krankenhäuser von 1919. Wo das Gesetz von 1900 in erster Linie um administrative Probleme bemüht war, versuchte das Gesetz von 1919, das seinen Anstoß bereits der Psychiatrie verdankte, neue Formen der Macht zu entfalten. Der psychiatrische Diskurs zielte auf eine Verfeinerung des disziplinarischen Netzwerks innerhalb des sozialen Gefüges ab, während er es gleichzeitig verstand den diskursiven Bruch zwischen psychiatrischen Techniken und traditionellen Praxen der Pflege psychisch Kranker permanent zu verwischen., This study attempts to reassess the history of psychiatry in Japan through critical application of Michel Foucault’s theory of disciplinary power. First the society of the early Meiji-era will be defined as an example of a disciplinary society within the scope of discourses on the system of punishment and general social reforms in the age of modernization. After recapitulation of the historical framework, the second stage engages in a close reading of the central discursive figures and texts of Japanese psychiatry. In a unique account for the field of history of Japanese psychiatry, focusing on marginalized fragments of psychiatric texts, their constitutive character for the establishment of psychiatric discourses in Japan is revealed. It is shown, that these texts, rooting in German speaking biological psychiatry, heavily stress the hazard of the insane to the nation. Additionally drawing on juridical problems, which derive from the enactment of a European model of law, provides an explanation for the necessity of psychiatry as a social institution. The key argument asserts a discursive break between the two major legal acts dealing with modes of confinement of the mentally ill: The Custody of the Mentally Ill Act dating to 1900 and the Mental Hospital Act from 1919. The first dealing mainly with administrative issues, the latter being formed under tremendous influence of the emerging psychiatric power, psychiatry pursuits to refine the disciplinary network operating in the social space, while constantly blurring the discursive crack between traditional forms of care and psychiatric techniques.

Abstract

The article features the architecture of Ludwig Wittgenstein. The philosopher was commissioned by his sister, Margarethe Stonborough-Wittgenstein, to build a mansion in Vienna, Austria. in 1926. According to the article, the structure does not comply with any of the architectural theories of the early 20th century. The mansion is a three-story house with 27 rooms, and a floor area of 11,000 square feet. It is also said to be a manifestation of Wittgenstein's regard for absoluteness and decline for compromise.

Abstract

This article is based on German and Japanese sources and shows how around 1900 European psychiatric concepts and practices embedded themselves into emerging scientific Japanese discourses. The article argues that now forgotten German-Japanese exchanges in the field of psychiatric pathology, together with the historical development of psychiatric care, were central mechanisms for the establishment of a distinctly psychiatric discourse in Japan priot to its broad institutionalization. Three discursive strategies were key: Japanese and German experts from a range of medical fields reinvented a body of traditions loosely related to actual pre-modern cultural practices; they engaged in comparative evaluations of psychiatric conditions; and, through the simple but effective transformation of specific concepts and termini at the margins of European psychiatry, these experts contributed to the transfer not only of a psychiatric discourse but also affected the power relations on a national and international scale as European psychiatry permeated into new territory, namely the Japanese landscape of emerging modern scientific disciplines.
