Abstract This work introduces and explores the use of secondary rotors for vertical axis wind turbine power take‐off. A parametric framework based on optimally designed secondary rotors is developed which calculates the maximum achievable efficiency of power conversion between the primary and secondary rotors. It is shown that practicable rotor designs can convert between 87% and 90% of primary rotor power to the secondary rotors whilst facilitating nacelle mass reductions between 85% and 87% compared to traditional reference turbine drivetrains.

The identification and reduction of methane sources is considered an important part of the fight to stem greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to the atmosphere. One of the largest industrial contributors to national GHG emissions in Canada is the Alberta Oil Sands Region. To quantify and investigate the spatial distribution and temporal variability of methane emissions from this region, airborne measurements were conducted in 2017 and 2018 with three aircraft. 59 flights were conducted in total to assess emissions for both open-pit and in-situ facilities, in both cold and warm seasons. Derived emission rates were higher than those reported in national inventories by 30%–96% depending on the facility. In-situ facilities had emission rates an order of magnitude lower than surface mining operations and differed significantly from inventory estimates. No statistical differences in CH4 emissions between cold and warm seasons were observed, substantiating the use of simple upscaling to annual emissions within inventories. Rather than confirming a reported decrease in emissions between 2013 and 2018, the measurements suggest essentially no change from the 18 t h−1 for the region observed in 2013. Overall, the results suggest that current methods of CH4 emission determination within the oil sands region, for use in reporting, require improvement.

Introduction In liver cirrhosis, acute variceal bleeding (AVB) is associated with a 1-year mortality rate of up to 40%. Data on early or pre-emptive transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic stent–shunt (TIPSS) in AVB is inconclusive and may not reflect current management strategies. Randomised controlled trial of EArly transjugular intrahepatiC porTosystemic stent–shunt in AVB (REACT-AVB) aims to investigate the clinical and cost-effectiveness of early TIPSS in patients with cirrhosis and AVB after initial bleeding control.Methods and analysis REACT-AVB is a multicentre, randomised controlled, open-label, superiority, two-arm, parallel-group trial with an internal pilot. The two interventions allocated randomly 1:1 are early TIPSS within 4 days of diagnostic endoscopy or secondary prophylaxis with endoscopic therapy in combination with non-selective beta blockers. Patients aged ≥18 years with cirrhosis and Child-Pugh Score 7–13 presenting with AVB with endoscopic haemostasis are eligible for inclusion. The primary outcome is transplant-free survival at 1 year post randomisation. Secondary endpoints include transplant-free survival at 6 weeks, rebleeding, serious adverse events, other complications of cirrhosis, Child-Pugh and Model For End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) scores at 6 and 12 months, health-related quality of life, use of healthcare resources, cost-effectiveness and use of cross-over therapies. The sample size is 294 patients over a 4-year recruitment period, across 30 hospitals in the UK.Ethics and dissemination Research ethics committee of National Health Service has approved REACT-AVB (reference number: 23/WM/0085). The results will be submitted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal. This investigation looks at the antecedents and outcomes of 141 children living in poor informal settlements in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana identifying with global citizenship. It finds that the model of global citizenship devised by Reysen and Katzarska-Miller (2013) is a moderately good fit for this group of children. Structural equation modelling demonstrates that antecedents of global awareness as well as friends and family supporting global citizenship (normative environment) predict the child's self-identification as a global citizen. This in turn predicts six prosocial traits: intergroup empathy, valuing diversity, social justice, environmental sustainability, intergroup helping and responsibility to act. The research suggests that there may be other elements to a global citizenship model that could be investigated in future research.

Background & Aims: Guidelines for the management of primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) were published by the British Society of Gastroenterology in 2018. In this study, we assessed adherence to these guidelines in the UK National Health Service (NHS). Methods: All NHS acute trusts were invited to contribute data between 1 January 2021 and 31 March 2022, assessing clinical care delivered to patients with PBC in the UK. Results: We obtained data for 8,968 patients with PBC and identified substantial gaps in care across all guideline domains. Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) was used as first-line treatment in 88% of patients (n = 7,864) but was under-dosed in one-third (n = 1,964). Twenty percent of patients who were UDCA-untreated (202/998) and 50% of patients with inadequate UDCA response (1,074/2,102) received second-line treatment. More than one-third of patients were not assessed for fatigue (43%; n = 3,885) or pruritus (38%; n = 3,415) in the previous 2 years. Fifty percent of all patients with evidence of hepatic decompensation were discussed with a liver transplant centre (222/443). A cluster of eleven research and innovation projects, funded under the same call of the EU’s H2020 programme, are developing breakthrough and game-changing renewable energy technologies that will form the backbone of the energy system by 2030 and 2050 are, at present, at an early stage of development. These projects have joined forces at a collaborative workshop, entitled ‘Low-TRL Renewable Energy Technologies’, at the 10th Sustainable Places Conference (SP2022), to share their insights, present their projects’ progress and achievements to date, and expose their approach for exploitation and market uptake of their solutions.

Background & Aims: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is associated with liver and cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Recently published NAFLD Quality Standards include 11 key performance indicators (KPIs) of good clinical care. This national study, endorsed by British Association for the Study of the Liver (BASL) and British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG), aimed to benchmark NAFLD care in UK hospitals against these KPIs. Methods: This study included all new patients with NAFLD reviewed in the outpatient clinic in the months of March 2019 and March 2022. Participating UK hospitals self-registered for the study through BASL/BSG. KPI outcomes were compared using Fisher’s exact or Chi-square tests. Results: Data from 776 patients with NAFLD attending 34 hospitals (England [25], Scotland [four], Wales [three], Northern Ireland [two]) were collected. A total of 85.3% of hospitals reported established local liver disease assessment pathways, yet only 27.9% of patients with suspected NAFLD had non-invasive fibrosis assessment documented at the point of referral to secondary care. In secondary care, 79.1% of patients had fibrosis assessment. Assessment of cardiometabolic risk factors including obesity, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and smoking were conducted in 73.2%, 33.0%, 19.3%, and 54.9% of all patients, respectively. There was limited documentation of diet (35.7%) and exercise advice (55.1%). Excluding those on statins, only 9.1% of patients with NAFLD at increased cardiovascular risk (T2DM and/or QRISK-3 >10%) had documented discussion of statin treatment. Significant KPI improvements from 2019 to 2022 were evident in use of non-invasive fibrosis assessment before secondary care referral, statin recommendations, and diet and exercise recommendations. Conclusions: This national study identified substantial variation in NAFLD management in the UK with clear areas for improvement, particularly fibrosis risk assessment before secondary care referral and management of associated cardiometabolic risk factors. Impact and implications: This study identified significant variation in the management of NAFLD in the UK. Only 27.9% of patients with suspected NAFLD had non-invasive fibrosis assessment performed to identify those at greater risk of advanced liver disease before specialist referral. Greater emphasis is needed on the management of associated cardiometabolic risk factors in individuals with NAFLD. Hospitals with multidisciplinary NAFLD service provision had higher rates of fibrosis evaluation and assessment and management of cardiometabolic risk than hospitals without multidisciplinary services. Further work is needed to align guideline recommendations and real-world practice in NAFLD care.

Abstract As wind farms become larger, there is scope for improved operation via wind farm control. Further development of wind farm control would be facilitated by more flexible operation of wind farms and so by more flexible operation of wind turbines. A novel approach to wind farm control is proposed that provides full flexibility of both. It consists of a wind farm controller architecture and an interface to individual turbines. The design of a specific realisation of the interface, the Power Adjusting Controller, is presented that requires little information on the turbine dynamics or controller and does not compromise the operation of the wind turbine controller or the turbine's safety. Results from a DNV Bladed simulation of a 5MW wind turbine are presented to illustrate the behaviour of the Power Adjusting Controller and to confirm that it meets the requirements to enable fully flexible operation of wind turbines and, so of wind farms.

Wildfire impacts on air quality and climate are expected to be exacerbated by climate change with the most pronounced impacts in the boreal biome. Despite the large geographic coverage, there is limited information on boreal forest wildfire emissions, particularly for organic compounds, which are critical inputs for air quality model predictions of downwind impacts. In this study, airborne measurements of 193 compounds from 15 instruments, including 173 non-methane organics compounds (NMOG), were used to provide the most detailed characterization, to date, of boreal forest wildfire emissions. Highly speciated measurements showed a large diversity of chemical classes highlighting the complexity of emissions. Using measurements of the total NMOG carbon (NMOGT), the ΣNMOG was found to be 50 % ± 3 % to 53 % ± 3 % of NMOGT, of which, the intermediate- and semi-volatile organic compounds (I/SVOCs) were estimated to account for 7 % to 10 %. These estimates of I/SVOC emission factors expand the volatility range of NMOG typically reported. Despite extensive speciation, a substantial portion of NMOGT remained unidentified (47 % ± 15 % to 50 % ± 15 %), with expected contributions from more highly-functionalized VOCs and I/SVOCs. The emission factors derived in this study improve wildfire chemical speciation profiles and are especially relevant for air quality modelling of boreal forest wildfires. These aircraft-derived emission estimates were further linked with those derived from satellite observations demonstrating their combined value in assessing variability in modelled emissions. These results contribute to the verification and improvement of models that are essential for reliable predictions of near-source and downwind pollution resulting from boreal forest wildfires.

Cyclic volatile methyl siloxanes (cVMSs), which can volatilize into the atmosphere, are active ingredients in widely used consumer products, thus attracting much attention due to their potential environmental risks. While in the atmosphere the cVMSs undergo oxidation, yielding both gaseous and particulate products. The aerosol yields and compositions from the OH oxidation of four cVMSs (D3–D6) were determined under low- and high-NOx conditions in an oxidation flow reactor. The aerosol yields increased progressively from D3 to D6, consistent with the volatilities and molecule weights of these cVMSs. NOx can restrict the formation of secondary organic aerosols (SOAs), leading to lower SOA yields under high-NOx conditions than under low-NOx conditions, with a yield decrease between 0.05–0.30 depending on the cVMSs. Ammonium sulfate seeds exhibited minor impacts on SOA yields under low-NOx conditions but significantly increased the SOA yields in the oxidation of D3–D5 at short photochemical ages under high-NOx conditions. The mass spectra of the SOAs showed a dependence of its chemical compositions on OH exposure. At high exposures equivalent to photochemical ages of >4 d in the atmosphere, D4–D6 SOAs mainly consisted of CxHy and CxHyOzSin under low-NOx conditions, whereas they primarily contained NmOz, CxHy, CxHyO1, CxHyO>1 and CxHyOzSin under high-NOx conditions. The potential contributions of cVMSs to SOA formation in the atmosphere were evaluated using the reported cVMSs annual production and the yield obtained in the present study. A global cVMS-derived (D4–D6) SOA source strength is estimated to be 0.01 Tg yr−1, distributed over major urban centers.

In discussing a university-industry partnership on the development of an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based simulation platform, this conceptual paper explores the use of Natural Language Processing (NLP) as a pedagogical innovation in social work. Critically reflecting upon this ongoing project, we discuss the current promises and limitations of NLP for social work education. The Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework theoretically informs "lessons learned" from this case study and provides a call to action for social work educators to play a greater role in developing and researching pedagogies supported by currently evolving AI technologies.

Background: Extensor Hallicus Longus (EHL) tendon lacerations with Dorsalis Pedis (DP) artery injuries are uncommon when present together. Insufficient literature exists regarding surgical management of these uncommon injuries. We present a case of a delayed presentation of a 29-year-old male who sustained a Zone 4 EHL laceration to the dorsal midfoot with concomitant DP artery pseudoaneurysm. Magnetic resonance imaging showed 5.5 cm diastasis between tendon stumps and Computed Tomographic Angiography confirmed a DP artery pseudoaneurysm. Co-case with Orthopedic and Vascular Surgery where Vascular Surgery performed DP artery excision and repair pseudoaneurysm and Orthopedic Surgery performed allograft reconstruction of the EHL tendon with a successful functional outcome at follow up. Given the paucity of literature on EHL injuries and no evidence of a reported concomitant EHL tendon laceration with DP artery pseudoaneurysm, we believe that this combined case can be used as a guide to help clinicians and patients in the clinical decision-making process.

Abstract Hypothalamic oxytocin (OXT) and arginine-vasopressin (AVP) neurons have been at the center of several physiological and behavioral studies. Advances in viral vector biology and the development of transgenic rodent models have allowed for targeted gene expression to study the functions of specific cell populations and brain circuits. In this study, we compared the efficiency of various adeno-associated viral vectors in these cell populations and demonstrated that none of the widely used promoters were, on their own, effective at driving expression of a down-stream fluorescent protein in OXT or AVP neurons. As anticipated, the OXT promoter could efficiently drive gene expression in OXT neurons and this efficiency is solely attributed to the promoter and not the viral serotype. We also report that a dual virus approach using an OXT promoter driven Cre recombinase significantly improved the efficiency of viral transduction in OXT neurons. Finally, we demonstrate the utility of the OXT promoter for conducting functional studies on OXT neurons by using an OXT specific viral system to record neural activity of OXT neurons in lactating female rats across time. We conclude that extreme caution is needed when employing non-neuron-specific viral approaches/promoters to study neural populations within the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus.

Forest fires are major contributors of reactive gas- and particle-phase organic compounds to the atmosphere. We used offline high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry to perform a molecular-level speciation of gas- and particle-phase compounds sampled via aircraft from an evolving boreal forest fire smoke plume in Saskatchewan, Canada. We observed diverse multifunctional compounds containing oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur (CHONS), whose structures, formation, and impacts are understudied. The dilution-corrected absolute ion abundance of particle-phase CHONS compounds increased with plume age by a factor of 6.4 over the first 4 h of downwind transport, and their relative contribution to the observed functionalized organic aerosol (OA) mixture increased from 19 % to 40 %. The dilution-corrected absolute ion abundance of particle-phase compounds with sulfide functional groups increased by a factor of 13 with plume age, and their relative contribution to observed OA increased from 4 % to 40 %. Sulfides were present in up to 75 % of CHONS compounds and the increases in sulfides were accompanied by increases in ring-bound nitrogen; both increased together with CHONS prevalence. A complex mixture of intermediate- and semi-volatile gas-phase organic sulfur species was observed in emissions from the fire and depleted downwind, representing potential precursors to particle-phase CHONS compounds. These results demonstrate CHONS formation from nitrogen- and oxygen-containing biomass burning emissions in the presence of reduced sulfur species. In addition, they highlight chemical pathways that may also be relevant in situations with elevated emissions of nitrogen- and sulfur-containing organic compounds from residential biomass burning and fossil fuel use (e.g., coal), respectively.

In this study we analyzed the use of children's literature in three widely used commercially published and literature-based reading programs for grades 1 to 6. On average, 37% of the literature selections had been previously published, with a range by publisher of 4% to 55%. These percentages are noticeably lower than those reported for American programs published about the same time. The publishers changed the selections from their original tradebook publication in two key areas: text context and illustrations. The changes frequently altered the intent, content, and meaning of the selections, and in some cases rendered the stories incomprehensible. [Published May 2004]
