Hyperuricemia is a risk factor for gout and other cardiovascular diseases. One of the therapies used is Allopurinol. Unfortunately, it has unwanted side effects. These conditions made researchers continue to seek and develop alternative treatments from natural products. One of which is from plants of the Phyllanthus genus. One of their contents was polyphenols, especially flavonoids. It is an alternative treatment for hyperuricemia because of its minimal side effects. The flavonoids in this genus were reported to have xanthine oxidase inhibitory: quercetin, kaempferol, rutin, apigenin, luteolin, myricetin, catechin, epicatechin, and epigallocatechin with IC50 values ​​from 0.44 M to > 100μM. The presence of π-π interactions between planar rings A and C on flavones with phe 1009 and phe 914 and the addition of hydroxyl groups on flavonoid compounds plays a crucial role in inhibiting xanthine oxidase.

The Black-throated Laughingthrush (Pterorhinus chinensis) is a bird belonging to the order Passeriformes and the family Leiothrichidae, and is found in Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam. Pterorhinus chinensis was once classified as belonging to the genus Garrulax. However, recent research has reclassified it in the genus Pterorhinus. In this study, we sequenced and characterized the complete mitogenome of P. chinensis. The complete mitochondrial genome of P. chinensis is 17,827 bp in length. It consists of 13 PCGs, 22 tRNAs, two rRNAs, and two control regions. All genes are coded on the H-strand, except for one PCG (nad6) and eight tRNAs. All PCGs are initiated with ATG and stopped by five types of stop codons. Our comparative analyses show irregular gene rearrangement between trnT and trnP genes with another similar control region emerging between trnE and trnF genes compared with the ancestral mitochondrial gene order, called "duplicate CR gene order". The phylogenetic position of P. chinensis and phylogenetic relationships among members of Leiothrichidae are assessed based on complete mitogenomes. Phylogenetic relationships based on Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood methods showed that Garrulax and (Pterorhinus + Ianthocincla) formed a clade. Leiothrix and Liocichla also formed a clade. Our study provides support for the transfer of P. chinensis from Garrulax to Pterorhinus. Our results provide mitochondrial genome data to further understand the mitochondrial genome characteristics and taxonomic status of Leiothrichidae.

Four new species of the feather mite genus Mesalgoides (Acariformes: Psoroptoididae: Pandalurinae) are described from passerine birds (Passeriformes) in China: Mesalgoides morrisonia sp. nov. from Alcippe morrisonia Swinhoe (Leiothrichidae), M. vinacea sp. nov. from Carpodacus vinaceus Verreaux (Fringillidae), M. flammicepis sp. nov. from Cephalopyrus flammiceps (Burton) (Paridae), and M. erythaca sp. nov. from Pyrrhula erythaca Blyth (Fringillidae).

Four new species of Guimaraesiella Eichler, 1949 are described and illustrated based on specimens collected in South China. They are: Guimaraesiella (Cicchinella) citreisoma new species ex Leiothrix lutea kwangtungensis Whistler, 1943 (Leiothrichidae); Guimaraesiella (Cicchinella) corrugata new species ex Alcippe hueti hueti David, 1874 (Leiothrichidae); Guimaraesiella (Cicchinella) petilorica new species ex Alcippe nipalensis nipalensis (Hodgson, 1837) (Leiothrichidae); and Guimaraesiella (Cicchinella) yuhinae new species from Yuhina flavicollis rouxi (Oustalet, 1896) (Zosteropidae); this is the first species of the Brueelia-complex recorded from a member of the Zosteropidae.

Four new species of amblyceran chewing lice of the genus Myrsidea Waterston, 1915 are described from hosts of the babbler families Leiothrichidae, Paradoxornithidae and Timaliidae in China. They are: Myrsidea attenuata n. sp. from Garrulax maesi maesi (Oustalet, 1890), Myrsidea zhangae n. sp. from Ianthocincla berthemyi (Oustalet, 1876), Myrsidea liopari n. sp. from Lioparus chrysotis amoenus (Mayr, 1941) and L. chrysotis swinhoii (Verreaux, 1871), and Myrsidea suthorae n. sp. from Suthora verreauxi verreauxi Sharpe, 1883. A checklist of host-louse associations for identified and unidentified Myrsidea species known from babblers is provided.

Two new feather mite species of the genus Trouessartia Canestrini are described from laughingthrushes (Passeriformes: Leiothrichidae) captured in Meghalaya (India): Trouessartia cyanouropterae sp. n. from Actinodura cyanouroptera (Hodgson) and Trouessartia alcippeae sp. n. from Alcippe nipalensis (Hodgson). It is the first time when species of the genus Trouessartia are described from leiothrichids.

Background: Laughingthrushes (family: Leiothrichidae) consists of diverse and widespread species found in the Indian subcontinent but there is a lack of information on their avian haemosporidians. Methods: We sampled 231 laughingthrushes of 8 species in the western and eastern Himalaya in India. Using parasite morphology and cytochrome b sequences we describe 2 new Haemoproteus species harbored in 3 species of laughingthrushes and report a case of cryptic speciation. Results: First Haemoproteus lineage TROERY01 (GenBank: KY623720) found in Trochalopteron erythrocephalum (27.47%) and Trochalopteron variegatum (2.9%) in mid to high altitude tropical forests in the western and eastern Himalaya, was described as Haemoproteus (Parahaemoproteus) leiothrichus n. sp. (Haemosporida: Haemoproteidae). Second Haemoproteus lineage TROERY02 (GenBank: KY623721) described as Haemoproteus (Parahaemoproteus) homoleiothrichus n. sp. (Haemosporida: Haemoproteidae) was found in T. erythrocephalum (2.19%) and Trochalopteron lineatum (3.84%), albeit in low intensity, only in the western Himalaya. Both H. homoleiothrichus n. sp. and H. leiothrichus n. sp. showed no significant difference in morphological features in blood stages. A genetic divergence of 4.4% along with distinct phylogenetic position indicates that these 2 lineages represent cryptic species. Previously, T. erythrocephalum has been described as an additional host for a morphologically described Haemoproteus timalus in the oriental region. Our described species have several morphological features that are absent in H. timalus. These are, the presence of dumbbell-like shaped mature gametocytes, ‘arm’ like extensions of gametocytes and lateral displacement of nuclei of infected erythrocytes. Illustrations of blood stages of the new species are given, and phylogenetic analysis with morphologically described Haemoproteus species identifies parasites closely related to the 2 described parasites. Conclusions: The lineages described here have been recorded only in the laughingthrushes so far. These are the first parasites to be described with T. erythrocephalum as a type host from the western and eastern Himalaya in India.

Blue-winged Minla is a small-sized bird, belonging to the Family Leiothrichidae of the Passeriformes. The population is suspected to be in decline owing to ongoing habitat destruction and fragmentation. Therefore, we sequenced and analyzed the Blue-winged Minla mitochondrial genome to provide a theoretical basis for protecting the brids. The mitochondrial genome of Blue-winged Minla was 17862 bp, it contains 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes, and 2 control regions. The overall base composition of the mitochondrial was 30.88% A, 13.82% G, 23.86% T, 31.44% C.

The article describes a new species of the feather mite family Pteronyssidae (Acarina: Psoroptidia) from the Gray Sibia Heterophasia gracilis (McClelland) (Passeriformes, Leiothrichidae) in India (Meghalaya, Jaintia Hills, Shnongrim village). Males of Timalinyssus wahlangi sp. n. differ from those of all Timalinyssus species by having the horseshoe-shaped epiandrum with a short anterior extension. Females of the new species differ from those of all previously known species of the genus in having the hysteronotal shield with deep lateral incisions between e2 and f2 setae. A key to all species of the genus Timalinyssus is presented.

Historically the babblers have been assigned to the family Timaliidae but several recent studies have attempted to rest the taxonomy of this diverse passerine assemblage on a more firm evolutionary footing. The result has been a major rearrangement of the group. A well-supported and comprehensive phylogeny for this widespread avian group is an important part of testing evolutionary and biogeographic hypotheses, especially in Asia where the babblers are a key component of many forest ecosystems. However, the genus Liocichla is poorly represented in these prior studies of babbler systematics. We used a multilocus molecular genetic approach to generate a phylogenetic hypothesis for all five currently recognized species in the avian genus Liocichla. Multilocus DNA sequence data was used to construct individual gene trees using maximum likelihood and species trees were estimated from gene trees using Bayesian analyses. Divergence dates were obtained using a molecular clock approach. Molecular data estimate a probable window of time for the origin for the Liocichla from the mid to late Miocene, between 5.55 and 12.87 Ma. Despite plumage similarities between the insular Taiwan endemic, L. steerii, and the continental L. bugunorum and L. omeiensis, molecular data suggest that L. steerii is the sister taxon to all continental Liocichla. The continental Liocichla are comprised of two lineages; a lineage containing L. omeiensis and L. bugunorum and a lineage comprised of L. phoenicea and L. ripponi. The comparatively early divergence of L. steerii within the Liocichla may be illusory due to extinct and therefore unsampled lineages. L. ripponi and L. phoenicea are parapatric with a Pleistocene split (0.07–1.88 Ma) occurring between an Eastern Himalayan L. phoenicea and a Northern Indochina distributed L. ripponi. L. bugunorum and L. omeiensis underwent a similar split between the Eastern Himalaya (L. bugunorum) and Central China (L. omeiensis) divided by the Hengduan Mountains. This study supports an origin of the Liocichla occurring sometime prior to the Miocene–Pliocene boundary, a period of significant climatic upheaval in Asia. The biogeographical patterns within the Liocichla mirror those of other birds in the region and allude to common geological and climatic drivers of avian diversification in Asia.

Josef Prokop Pražak (1870–1904) published a number of papers from 1894–1900, mainly on faunistics and taxonomy of birds. In the 1890s his faunistic papers were shown to include many fraudulent data and were thus rejected or cited with caution. However, no comprehensive review of Pražak’s new bird taxa was made. My reconstruction of Pražak's Curriculum vitae shows that Pražak spent most of his life in his native Bohemia. In 1893–95 he studied at the Universitat Wien, Austria, and volunteered at the Naturhistorisches Hofmuseum, and in 1896–98 he studied at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. His taxonomic studies are connected with the ornithological collections in Vienna and Edinburgh. Although his contemporaries described Pražak as a charming and talented man, I document that his taxonomic papers include many fraudulent data and that his activities included stealing and relabeling museum specimens. The revision of Pražak's new bird taxa presented here reveals that Remizus and the following species-group names are available for nomenclatural purposes: Aegithalus caudatus japonica (Aegithalidae), Alauda arborea cherneli (Alaudidae), Carduelis elegans alpestris (Fringillidae), Carduelis elegans hortensis (Fringillidae), Carduelis elegans sylvestris (Fringillidae), Erithacus rubecula maior (Turdidae), Lophophanes cristatus brunnescens (Paridae), Lophophanes cristatus scotica (Paridae), Panurus biarmicus raddei (Paradoxornithidae), Parus caeruleus obscurus (Paridae), Parus major newtoni (Paridae), Parus major blanfordi (Paridae), Poecile cincta alascensis (Paridae), Poecile lugubris persica (Paridae), Remizus pendulinus raddei (Remizidae) and Sturnus vulgaris intermedius (Sturnidae). I defined type series for all, and I restricted type localities for most, of these species-group taxa. I synonymized Remizus pendulinus raddei Pražak, 1897g, with Remiz pendulinus pendulinus (Linnaeus, 1758). In addition I found that Vanellus grisescens was described by Grant (1912), not by Pražak, and I synonymized this species with Vanellus chilensis lampronotus (Wagler, 1827). I found that the following names created by Pražak have no standing in zoological nomenclature: Accentor modularis sclateri (hypothetical form), Anthus spipoletta reichenowi (hypothetical form), Scops scops taczanowskii (manuscript name), Trochalopteron hennickei (hypothetical form) and Vanellus grisescens (hypothetical form).

Pražák (1897 c: 328) said that he based this form on the holotype (JPPH 18720) and two paratypes (both in JPPH, no accession or inventory numbers given), all adult males collected by Mr. W. Jaworowski on 26 August 1896 at the outflow of the “Yuen” [= Yuan] River in the “Tungting See” [= Dongting Lake], Hunan Province, China. There is no evidence that Pražák received these specimens from W. Jaworowski (who existed probably only in Pražák’s mind) or from anybody else, and there is no evidence that the holotype and paratypes of T. hennickei Pražák existed. I thus consider Trochalopteron hennickei Pražák a hypothetical form (see also Hartert 1909: 629, footnote), whose name has no standing in zoological nomenclature (Art. 1.3. 1 of the Code). In inventing this species, Pražák (1897 c) might have been inspired by descriptions and/or illustrations of Trochalopteron cinereiceps Styan (1887: 166, pl. 6) [= Garrulax cineraceus cinereiceps (Styan)] and Trochalopteron sukatschewi Berezovskǐj & Bianki (1891: 59, pl. 1, fig. 1; Deditius 1897: 67) [= Garrulax sukatschewi (Berezovskĭj & Bianki)], which he cited. Oustalet (1898: 254) believed that T. hennickei is a valid species, but remarked that specimens agreeing with Pražák’s (1897 c) description were unknown to him.

Garrulax mitratus (Muller) Locality. – Malaysia: Fraser’s Hill, Aug.2002 and Jul.2003. Remarks. – Haemoproteus timalus has been recorded, in addition to the African origin type host species Turdoides rubiginosus, from Southeast Asian timaliid hosts including Garrulax spp. [Bennett et al., 1991; Valkiunas, 1997 (2005)]. The gametocytes recovered from the timaliid Pellorneum capistratum from Sarawak and Java, however, conform better than those from Garrulax spp. with the type description. The gametocytes embrace the erythrocyte nucleus and fill the entire space between the nucleus and erythrocyte wall. Contrary to the type description by Bennettt et al. (1991), who reported the presence of “amoeboid outlines” (projections) also in fully mature specimens, the gametocytes from Garrulax spp. rarely extend wall projections, and only in the younger specimens. The infected erythrocyte becomes enlarged as previously reported, whereas the host-cell nucleus is frequently considerably displaced (NDR approximately 0.6, with the exception of a microgametocyte-infected Gar. mitratus erythrocyte, which is approximately 0.8, comparable with 0.8 in the type material and 0.76–0.87 of Pellorneum capistratum infections). Garrulax erythrocephalus Locality. – Malaysia: Cameron Highlands, Dec.2002. Description. – A round type, the host cell nucleus encloses 73 ± 12% of the macrogametocyte perimeter and 81 ± 7% of the microgametocyte perimeter. The macrogametocyte nucleus is usually central and the karyosome is distinct, while the cytoplasm contains some vacuoles and dense granules. The microgametocyte cytoplasm contains a few vacuoles and a diffuse nuclear mass with a central large pink-staining granule (Fig. 12). Remarks. – Valkiunas [1997 (2005)] synonymized Leucocytozoon spp. from passeriform birds, enclosed by over half by the host-cell nucleus with Leu. majoris. In both Leu. majoris from the type host genus Parus as well as of host from other families included in Leu. majoris, notably Timaliidae (as the presently discussed), the host-cell nucleus covers over 75% of the gametocyte periphery (Bennett & Peirce, 1992). Two new species of the feather mite genus Neocalcealges Orwig 1968 (Analgoidea: Trouessartiidae) are described from passerine birds (Passeriformes) from the Sichuan province of China: Neocalcealges davidi sp. nov. from Alcippe davidi Styan (Leiothrichidae) and N. chrysotis sp. nov. from Lioparus chrysotis (Blyth) (Paradoxornithidae). We provide a key to all described species of Neocalcealges.

Garrulax monachus Swinhoe Garrulax monachus Swinhoe, 1870a: 248 (Hainan). Now Garrulax chinensis monachus Swinhoe, 1870. See Cheng, 1987: 679, and MacKinnon and Phillipps, 2000: 416. SYNTYPE: AMNH 587140, adult unsexed, collected on Hainan Island, 198009N, 1098309E (USBGN, 1956a), Guangdong, China, in February 1863, by Robert Swinhoe. From the Rothschild Collection. COMMENTS: Swinhoe did not designate a type or say exactly how many specimens he had. There were at least four—two that were shot on 10 February as he was journeying inland and two that died in captivity (Swinhoe, 1870a: 249–250). Therefore, Warren and Harrison (1971: 361) were incorrect in saying that the two syntypes are in the BMNH. The above specimen is the one specifically mentioned by Swinhoe (1870a: 249) in the original description as having been shot in the foot and caught by hand, as it has a broken leg. The Rothschild label had been so noted and marked ‘‘co­type’’ (5 syntype). A new species of quill mites Picobia dziabaszewskii sp. nov. (Acari, Syringophilidae) parasitizing Garrulax formosus(Verreaux) (Passeriformes: Leiothrichidae) is described using combined data sources: standard morphological informa-tion extended by mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I sequence (COI) and domene D2 of the nuclear gene 28S rDNA data(DNA barcode). Additionally, the case of polymorphism within domene D2 region of 28 rDNA is registered for the first time in syringophilid mites.
