Background The digital transformation of healthcare enables new ways of working in cancer care directing attention on the digital skills of healthcare professionals. This systematic review aims to identify existing evidence about digital skills among health care professionals in cancer care to identify the needs for future education and research. Methods Database searches were conducted in PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane and ERIC to identify studies until March 2023. The inclusion criteria were digital skills of health care professionals in cancer care as described by themselves, other health care professionals, patients or significant others. The CASP tool was used for quality assessment of the studies. Data was analysed following inductive content analysis. Results The search produced 4563 records, of which 24 studies were included (12 qualitative, 10 quantitative, 1 mixed methods design and 1 strategy paper). Four main categories were identified describing HCPs’ required skills, existing skills and development areas of digital skills in cancer care: Skills for information technology, Skills for ethical practice, Skills for creating a human-oriented relationship and Skills for digital education and support. In development areas, one more main category, Skills for implementing digital health, was identified. Conclusion The digital skills of health care professionals in cancer care are multifaceted and fundamental for quality cancer care. The skills need to be assessed to provide education based on actual learning needs. The review findings can be used for education and research in this field.

Purpose: Interprofessional collaboration (IPC) is increasingly important in work and workplace learning. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the characteristics of IPC that are relevant for learning and developing at work. Design/methodology/approach: We examine IPC in the discussion data of health care professionals when designing, implementing and evaluating developmental tasks. Qualitative content analysis is carried out on temporally sequential task trajectories, considering IPC from the perspective of the objects and goals of IPC task activity in developmental efforts. Findings: The developmentally relevant characteristics of IPC are crystallized in the concepts of coordination, co-creation and community building, which play different, interdependent roles in development efforts. We show their interplay and how they complement each other in practice. Research limitations/implications: Our findings regarding IPC characteristics are to be interpreted as working hypotheses and resources for further research. Practical implications: Understanding the dynamics of IPC is useful for renewing work practices. Attention to the interplay and complementarity of IPC characteristics may help in the design and implementation of effective and sustained development efforts. Originality/value: The dynamics of IPC in developmental settings have not been sufficiently studied. This paper proposes three developmentally relevant and intertwined characteristics of IPC for scholars of workplace learning.

The growing emphasis on learning with and from patients has shifted the focus from education and healthcare professionals to the student-patient relationship. The relationship between student and patient, with a supportive preceptor as a resource, can influence the progression and development of an authentic person-centred approach to care among students. The purpose of this study was to analyse the congruence between nursing students' and patients' views of their relationship during students' clinical placement. The study compared data from cross-sectional matched cohort pairs of nursing students (n = 187) and patients (n = 187) in Finland. The data were collected between March 2015 and May 2016 using corresponding questionnaires and procedures in both cases. Both students' and patients' views were moderately or weakly congruent in terms of facilitative relationship, characterised as a mutually enriching relationship for both students and patients through dialogue. Patients, however, tended to see the relationship significantly more often as mechanistic, focusing on students learning practical skills, compared to students who saw the relationship more often as facilitative. Patients' age and the reasons for care were the only background variables that predicted the congruence between students' and patients' views of their relationships. These findings suggest ways in which student-patient relationships can be made more meaningful in supporting learning in clinical education.

Background: Intensive care nurses frequently encounter ethical issues with potentially severe consequences for nurses, patients, and next of kin. Therefore, ethical issues in intensive care units (ICU) should be recognized and managed. Research objectives: To analyze ethical issues reported by intensive care nurses and how reported issues were managed within the organization using register data from the HaiPro critical incident reporting system (CIRS), and to explore the suitability of this system for reporting and managing ethical issues. Research design: This was a retrospective descriptive register study. CIRS reports on ethical issues in adult ICUs (n = 12) in one hospital district in Finland over 25 months (2019–2021) were analyzed through inductive content analysis and descriptive quantification. The CIRS's suitability for reporting and managing ethical issues was evaluated through a strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis. Ethical considerations: The study was approved by the University Ethics Committee, and permission to conduct the research was granted before data collection within the organization. Results: CIRS reports on ethical issues (n = 35) made by nurses were found in seven of the 12 ICUs. The CIRS managers of these units managed these reports. The ethical issues described by the nurses were divided into four main categories: nature, situational information, consequences, and contributing factors. Management of reported ethical issues was divided into three main categories: preventive actions proposed by nurses, proposals for actions by CIRS managers, and actions taken by CIRS managers. Conclusions: Systematic register data broadly describe ethical issues and their management, indicating that the CIRS could be suitable for reporting and managing ethical issues, thereby enabling the monitoring and development of ethical quality at the unit and organizational levels. Aim(s): To provide an introduction to the Good Nursing Care Scale (GNCS) and systematically review the application of the scale in health research. Design: Systematic review. Methods: Empirical studies published in English or Finnish in peer‐reviewed journals or as a summary of a PhD thesis where the scale was used for data collection amongst patients were included. Analysis was made by using descriptive statistics, narrative analysis, and evaluation of psychometric properties. Data Sources: PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane, and Scopus in October 2023. Results: A total of 26 full‐text studies and summaries of PhD theses were included in the review. The GNCS has been developed systematically, and the theoretical structure has remained stable. The studies indicate a high level of patient‐centered quality of nursing care. Validity and reliability evaluation and reporting were systematic in the studies and mainly indicate sufficient level. Variations between countries are not large, supporting the international use of the GNCS. Conclusions: Patient‐centered quality of nursing care is predominantly at high levels. However, systematic evaluation is needed to provide longitudinal data. For that purpose, the GNCS is one potential instrument. Implications for the Profession and Patient Care: Support for the use of existing, tested instruments is encouraged to provide critical ideas for the future needs of nurse practitioners, managers, teachers and researchers. Impact: This paper impacts researchers interested in systematic evaluation of the patient‐centered quality of nursing care and for practitioners taking care of patients. For researchers, it introduces a relevant instrument, the GNCS, for analysing the quality or for comparing the quality with other instruments. For practitioners, it produces evidence of the usability of the GNCS. Adherence to professional ethics in nursing is fundamental for high-quality ethical care. However, analysis of the use and impact of nurses' codes of ethics as a part of professional ethics is limited. To fill this gap in knowledge, the aim of our review was to describe the use and impact of the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements published by the American Nurses Association as an example of one of the earliest and most extensive codes of ethics for nurses with their interpretative statements and constituting a strong basis for the International Council of Nurses' Code of Ethics for Nurses. We based our review on previous literature using a scoping review method. We included both non-scientific and scientific publications to provide an analysis of codes of ethics which can be utilized in development and revision of other nurses' codes of ethics. In the searches, we used CINAHL and PubMed databases limiting publications to texts with a connection to the Code of Ethics for Nurses published from January 2001 to November 2022 and written in English. Searches yielded 1739 references, from which 785 non-scientific and 71 scientific publications were included for analysis of the data. Although non-scientific and scientific publications addressed different number of categories, the results indicated that in the both groups the use and impact focused on professional ethics, nursing practice, and work environment and less on education, research, or social health issues. Nurses' ethical standards were not addressed in non-scientific publications, and clinical issues and leadership were not in focus in scientific publications. Background: Nursing quality indicators (NQIs) are essential for evaluating and managing care, yet few validated NQIs exist for emergency nursing. The dynamic nature of this field demands specific, validated indicators. Purpose: The purpose of this review was to identify NQIs in adult emergency nursing using Donabedian's quality categories (structure, process, outcome) and explore their validation. Methods: A scoping review was conducted including articles from 2010 to February 2023, using the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature and Medline (Ovid) databases. Results: Among 936 screened articles, 18 were included, identifying 85 NQIs across structure (n = 14), process (n = 45), and outcome (n = 26) in emergency nursing. However, the validation of these NQIs was limited. Conclusions: NQIs evaluate emergency nursing quality, primarily in process assessment. Future work should validate the NQIs identified in this review for adult emergency nursing and search for potential new ones. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Stroke causes ethically challenging changes in the lives of individuals with stroke (IwS). However, it is unclear whether the changes are stable or dynamic. In this study, a novel concept 'ethical pathway' is used to describe the potential changes in the perceived realisation of IwS' values in temporal passage post-stroke. Ethical pathway includes three central values of nursing: dignity, privacy and autonomy. Aim of the study was to analyse the perceived ethical pathway of IwS over a non-limited post-stroke period, with the purpose to understand the existence of the IwS' ethical pathway in theoretical level. Design: A descriptive and correlational design. Methods: The volunteer participants were recruited via the Finnish Brain Association. Data were collected with questions of background variables and the Ethical Pathway of Individuals with Stroke (EPIS) instrument and analysed statistically. The Ethics Committee of the University approved the study and permission for data collection was obtained from the association. Results: Sixty-one IwS participated in the study. The ethical pathway varied during the post-stroke time. Of the values, dignity and privacy were realised lower with longer post-stroke time. Aim: To explore the link between nurse professional competence and various educational components within nursing education based on empirical evidence. Design: A scoping review. Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted from 1999 to 2024 using the Academic Search Premier, Business Source Complete, CINAHL, Education Research Complete, ERIC, and PubMed databases. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. Results: Thirty relevant studies met the inclusion criteria. The identified competencies were grouped into three main categories: management, nursing intervention, and societal and social competencies. Educational components were divided into two main categories: directive-regulated curricula and optional educational components. Most nurse competencies were linked to one or more educational components. Conclusion: This review found that competencies such as patient care initiation, interprofessional teamwork and nurse leadership received more research attention than others. The most frequently studied educational components were study modules / training in nursing curricula and clinical placements. However, no clear link was found between nurse competence and educational components for graduate nurses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The aim of this study was to clarify the perspective of radiography science as an academic discipline. A discipline can be studied by discovering the collective use of concepts, especially core concepts. We have previously identified the core concepts as clinical practices in radiography, radiographers' profession, safe and high‐quality radiation use, and technology in radiography. The relationships between these concepts have not been studied previously. In order to clarify the perspective of radiography science we have investigated further the core concepts, their interrelationships and interdependencies. Methods: Altogether, 53 dissertations meeting the inclusion criteria were selected for a qualitative document analysis. The data were first analysed deductively using an extraction matrix comprising four core concepts developed from previous studies, then relational statements were synthesised, and the statements were analysed semantically. Results: Analysis revealed the bilateral interrelationships between the concepts and their dependencies. All the concepts were used within healthcare. The rationale for radiography science research was the clinical practice of radiography and the improvement of services in a complex environment as a part of patients' pathways. Safe and high‐quality radiation use was investigated as a means to deliver optimal services. Technology was studied as being functional or a means to deliver services. The perspective of the discipline was seen as the combination of humanistic interaction with advanced technology, where safety and quality were a necessity. Conclusions: Defining core concepts and their interrelations clarifies the perspective of the discipline and gives radiography researchers a way to argue their viewpoint. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Collegiality is one of the fundamental values of the nursing profession. During the nursing history, collegiality has been described as part of a nurse's relationship with their peers and it influences the quality of care they provide and job satisfaction and commitment to their work. Despite earlier definitions, the concept of collegiality in nursing has remained unclear. The aim of this study was to clarify the concept of collegiality in the nursing profession, using Rodger's evolutionary concept analysis. We carried out electronic searches using the CINAHL, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, SocINDEX, PsycINFO and Eric databases and manual searches of the reference lists of the selected papers. The searches were limited to peer-reviewed papers published in English language from the inception of database to November 2022. This identified 25 papers. Based on our analysis, the attributes of the concept of collegiality were achieving mutual goals together with equality, reciprocity, trusted advocacy, powerful self-regulation and engaged belongingness. Antecedents of the concept included existing professional group, connection between professionals and professional self-esteem. The consequences were strengthening nurses' professional status, job satisfaction and their ability to provide the best possible patient care. We found that nurses' collegiality was a value-based concept, with a unique character based on professional connections. The concept brought together ethical and pragmatic strategies to achieve the best possible results for the nursing profession. Provided knowledge can be applied for further development of the concept and applying it in clinical research and practice. The concept of nurses' collegiality should also be studied in the future because both the profession and their working environment are constantly changing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
