Abstract This study aims to investigate the relationship between weight-adjusted-waist index (WWI), a new body index, and sarcopenia, while also assessing the potential of WWI as a tool for screening sarcopenic patients. The cross-sectional study involved adults who possessed complete data on WWI and appendicular skeletal muscle mass from the 1999–2006 and 2011–2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys. Weighted multivariate regression and logistic regression analyses were employed to explore the independent relationship between WWI and sarcopenia. The study included 26,782 participants. The results showed that WWI demonstrated a positive correlation with sarcopenia risk. In the fully adjusted model, with each 1 unit increase in WWI, the risk of developing sarcopenia rose 14.55 times higher among males (OR: 14.55, 95% CI 12.33, 17.15) and 2.86 times higher among females (OR: 2.86, 95% CI 2.59, 3.15). The optimal cutoff values of WWI for sarcopenia were 11.26 cm/√kg for males and 11.39 cm/√kg for females. Individuals with a higher WWI have an increased risk of developing sarcopenia, and a high WWI functions as a risk factor for sarcopenia. Assessing WWI could assist in identifying individuals at risk of sarcopenia.

Abstract The regeneration of critical-size bone defects, especially those with irregular shapes, remains a clinical challenge. Various biomaterials have been developed to enhance bone regeneration, but the limitations on the shape-adaptive capacity, the complexity of clinical operation, and the unsatisfied osteogenic bioactivity have greatly restricted their clinical application. In this work, we construct a mechanically robust, tailorable and water-responsive shape-memory silk fibroin/magnesium (SF/MgO) composite scaffold, which is able to quickly match irregular defects by simple trimming, thus leading to good interface integration. We demonstrate that the SF/MgO scaffold exhibits excellent mechanical stability and structure retention during the degradative process with the potential for supporting ability in defective areas. This scaffold further promotes the proliferation, adhesion and migration of osteoblasts and the osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) in vitro. With suitable MgO content, the scaffold exhibits good histocompatibility, low foreign-body reactions (FBRs), significant ectopic mineralisation and angiogenesis. Skull defect experiments on male rats demonstrate that the cell-free SF/MgO scaffold markedly enhances bone regeneration of cranial defects. Taken together, the mechanically robust, personalised and bioactive scaffold with water-responsive shape-memory may be a promising biomaterial for clinical-size and irregular bone defect regeneration.

Abstract Terrestrial geothermal springs are physicochemically diverse and host abundant populations of Archaea. However, the diversity, functionality, and geological influences of these Archaea are not well understood. Here we explore the genomic diversity of Archaea in 152 metagenomes from 48 geothermal springs in Tengchong, China, collected from 2016 to 2021. Our dataset is comprised of 2949 archaeal metagenome-assembled genomes spanning 12 phyla and 392 newly identified species, which increases the known species diversity of Archaea by ~48.6%. The structures and potential functions of the archaeal communities are strongly influenced by temperature and pH, with high-temperature acidic and alkaline springs favoring archaeal abundance over Bacteria. Genome-resolved metagenomics and metatranscriptomics provide insights into the potential ecological niches of these Archaea and their potential roles in carbon, sulfur, nitrogen, and hydrogen metabolism. Furthermore, our findings illustrate the interplay of competition and cooperation among Archaea in biogeochemical cycles, possibly arising from overlapping functional niches and metabolic handoffs. Taken together, our study expands the genomic diversity of Archaea inhabiting geothermal springs and provides a foundation for more incisive study of biogeochemical processes mediated by Archaea in geothermal ecosystems.

Abstract Background The general sluggish clearance kinetics of functional inorganic nanoparticles tend to raise potential biosafety concerns for in vivo applications. Renal clearance is a possible elimination pathway for functional inorganic nanoparticles delivered through intravenous injection, but largely depending on the surface physical chemical properties of a given particle apart from its size and shape. Results In this study, three small-molecule ligands that bear a diphosphonate (DP) group, but different terminal groups on the other side, i.e., anionic, cationic, and zwitterionic groups, were synthesized and used to modify ultrasmall Fe3O4 nanoparticles for evaluating the surface structure-dependent renal clearance behaviors. Systematic studies suggested that the variation of the surface ligands did not significantly increase the hydrodynamic diameter of ultrasmall Fe3O4 nanoparticles, nor influence their magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast enhancement effects. Among the three particle samples, Fe3O4 nanoparticle coated with zwitterionic ligands, i.e., Fe3O4@DMSA, exhibited optimal renal clearance efficiency and reduced reticuloendothelial uptake. Therefore, this sample was further labeled with 99mTc through the DP moieties to achieve a renal-clearable MRI/single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) dual-modality imaging nanoprobe. The resulting nanoprobe showed satisfactory imaging capacities in a 4T1 xenograft tumor mouse model. Furthermore, the biocompatibility of Fe3O4@DMSA was evaluated both in vitro and in vivo through safety assessment experiments. Conclusions We believe that the current investigations offer a simple and effective strategy for constructing renal-clearable nanoparticles for precise disease diagnosis. Graphical Abstract

Abstract The study of progressive failure of reservoir rocks is very important for the stability analysis of ultra-deep boreholes. The progressive failure can be characterized by the crack initiation stress (CI), crack damage stress (CD) and peak stress (Peak), which is controlled by the evolution of cracks in rock and is significantly affected by confining pressure. To explore the effect of high confining pressure and initial crack on the progressive failure, the initial crack density of 121 sedimentary rock samples was characterized by acoustic waves, and the progressive failure under different confining pressures was analyzed. Experiments show that the ratios of CI to Peak (CI/Peak) and CD to Peak (CD/Peak) increase significantly with confining pressure, which is agreement with the existing conclusion from low confining pressure (0–52 MPa), but those decrease for high confining pressure (68–85 MPa) above critical point of sandstone. The CI/Peak and CD/Peak decrease with increase of initial crack density, which is sensitive to confining pressure but independent of rock type and grain size. The CD of sandstone is pertinent to the friction coefficient of cracks. These results laid a foundation for analyzing the evolution mechanism of wellbore damage and predicting the timing of wellbore instability in ultra-deep wells.

Abstract Natural immunity is the first defense line of the host immune system, which plays a significant role in combating foreign pathogenic microorganisms. The IFN-β (interferon-beta) signaling pathway, being a typical example of innate immunity, plays a vital function. This study aimed to elucidate the function of pseudorabies virus (PRV) UL38 protein (unique long region 38) in suppressing the activation of the IFN-β signaling pathway. The findings from our study indicate that the PRV UL38 protein effectively hampers the activation of IFN-β by poly (dA: dT) (poly(deoxyadenylic-deoxythymidylic)) and 2’3’-cGAMP (2’-3’-cyclic GMP-AMP). Furthermore, UL38 exhibits spatial co-localization with STING (stimulator of interferon genes) and effectively hinders STING dimerization. Subsequently, STING was downgraded to suppress the production of IFN-β and ISGs (interferon stimulated genes). Immunoprecipitation analysis revealed that the interaction between UL38 and STING, which subsequently initiated the degradation of STING via selective autophagy mediated by TOLLIP (toll interacting protein). To summarize, this research elucidates the function of UL38 in counteracting the cGAS (cGAMP synthase)-STING-induced IFN-β pathway. The PRV UL38 protein may attenuate the activation of IFN-β as a means of regulating the virus’s persistence in the host.

Abstract Background This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of radiomics signatures derived from polyenergetic images (PEIs) and virtual monoenergetic images (VMIs) obtained through dual-layer spectral detector CT (DLCT). Moreover, it sought to develop a clinical-radiomics nomogram based on DLCT for predicting cancer stage (early stage: stage I-II, advanced stage: stage III-IV) in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Methods A total of 173 patients histopathologically diagnosed with PDAC and who underwent contrast-enhanced DLCT were enrolled in this study. Among them, 49 were in the early stage, and 124 were in the advanced stage. Patients were randomly categorized into training (n = 122) and test (n = 51) cohorts at a 7:3 ratio. Radiomics features were extracted from PEIs and 40-keV VMIs were reconstructed at both arterial and portal venous phases. Radiomics signatures were constructed based on both PEIs and 40-keV VMIs. A radiomics nomogram was developed by integrating the 40-keV VMI-based radiomics signature with selected clinical predictors. The performance of the nomogram was assessed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, calibration curves, and decision curves analysis (DCA). Results The PEI-based radiomics signature demonstrated satisfactory diagnostic efficacy, with the areas under the ROC curves (AUCs) of 0.92 in both the training and test cohorts. The optimal radiomics signature was based on 40-keV VMIs, with AUCs of 0.96 and 0.94 in the training and test cohorts. The nomogram, which integrated a 40-keV VMI-based radiomics signature with two clinical parameters (tumour diameter and normalized iodine density at the portal venous phase), demonstrated promising calibration and discrimination in both the training and test cohorts (0.97 and 0.91, respectively). DCA indicated that the clinical-radiomics nomogram provided the most significant clinical benefit. Conclusions The radiomics signature derived from 40-keV VMI and the clinical-radiomics nomogram based on DLCT both exhibited exceptional performance in distinguishing early from advanced stages in PDAC, aiding clinical decision-making for patients with this condition.

Abstract The onerous health and economic burden associated with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is a global predicament. Despite the advent of novel surgical techniques and therapeutic protocols, there is an incessant need for efficacious diagnostic and therapeutic targets to monitor the invasion, metastasis and recurrence of HNSCC due to its substantial morbidity and mortality. The differential expression patterns of histone deacetylases (HDACs), a group of enzymes responsible for modifying histones and regulating gene expression, have been demonstrated in neoplastic tissues. However, there is limited knowledge regarding the role of HDACs in HNSCC. Consequently, this review aims to summarize the existing research findings and explore the potential association between HDACs and HNSCC, offering fresh perspectives on therapeutic approaches targeting HDACs that could potentially enhance the efficacy of HNSCC treatment. Additionally, the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) dataset, CPTAC, HPA, OmicShare, GeneMANIA and STRING databases are utilized to provide supplementary evidence on the differential expression of HDACs, their prognostic significance and predicting functions in HNSCC patients. The integration of distributed generation brings in new challenges for the operation of distribution networks, including out-of-limit voltage and power flow control. Soft open points (SOP) are new power electronic devices that can flexibly control active and reactive power flows. With the exception of active power output, photovoltaic (PV) devices can provide reactive power compensation through an inverter. Thus, a synergetic optimization operation method for SOP and PV in a distribution network is proposed. A synergetic optimization model was developed. The voltage deviation, network loss, and ratio of photovoltaic abandonment were selected as the objective functions. The PV model was improved by considering the three reactive power output modes of the PV inverter. Both the load fluctuation and loss of the SOP were considered. Three multi-objective optimization algorithms were used, and a compromise optimal solution was calculated. Case studies were conducted using an IEEE 33-node system. The simulation results indicated that the SOP and PVs complemented each other in terms of active power transmission and reactive power compensation. Synergetic optimization improves power control capability and flexibility, providing better power quality and PV consumption rate.

Abstract Background Little is known about the safety and efficacy of discontinuing antiplatelet therapy via LMWH bridging therapy in elderly patients with coronary stents implanted for > 12 months undergoing non-cardiac surgery. This randomized trial was designed to compare the clinical benefits and risks of antiplatelet drug discontinuation via LMWH bridging therapy. Methods Patients were randomized 1:1 to receive subcutaneous injections of either dalteparin sodium or placebo. The primary efficacy endpoint was cardiac or cerebrovascular events. The primary safety endpoint was major bleeding. Results Among 2476 randomized patients, the variables (sex, age, body mass index, comorbidities, medications, and procedural characteristics) and percutaneous coronary intervention information were not significantly different between the bridging and non-bridging groups. During the follow-up period, the rate of the combined endpoint in the bridging group was significantly lower than in the non-bridging group (5.79% vs. 8.42%, p = 0.012). The incidence of myocardial injury in the bridging group was significantly lower than in the non-bridging group (3.14% vs. 5.19%, p = 0.011). Deep vein thrombosis occurred more frequently in the non-bridging group (1.21% vs. 0.4%, p = 0.024), and there was a trend toward a higher rate of pulmonary embolism (0.32% vs. 0.08%, p = 0.177). There was no significant difference between the groups in the rates of acute myocardial infarction (0.81% vs. 1.38%), cardiac death (0.24% vs. 0.41%), stroke (0.16% vs. 0.24%), or major bleeding (1.22% vs. 1.45%). Multivariable analysis showed that LMWH bridging, creatinine clearance < 30 mL/min, preoperative hemoglobin < 10 g/dL, and diabetes mellitus were independent predictors of ischemic events. LMWH bridging and a preoperative platelet count of < 70 × 109/L were independent predictors of minor bleeding events. Conclusions This study showed the safety and efficacy of perioperative LMWH bridging therapy in elderly patients with coronary stents implanted > 12 months undergoing non-cardiac surgery. An alternative approach might be the use of bridging therapy with half-dose LMWH. Trial registration ISRCTN65203415.

Abstract Skeletal muscle is the largest metabolic organ of the human body. Maintaining the best quality control and functional integrity of mitochondria is essential for the health of skeletal muscle. However, mitochondrial dysfunction characterized by mitochondrial dynamic imbalance and mitophagy disruption can lead to varying degrees of muscle atrophy, but the underlying mechanism of action is still unclear. Although mitochondrial dynamics and mitophagy are two different mitochondrial quality control mechanisms, a large amount of evidence has indicated that they are interrelated and mutually regulated. The former maintains the balance of the mitochondrial network, eliminates damaged or aged mitochondria, and enables cells to survive normally. The latter degrades damaged or aged mitochondria through the lysosomal pathway, ensuring cellular functional health and metabolic homeostasis. Skeletal muscle atrophy is considered an urgent global health issue. Understanding and gaining knowledge about muscle atrophy caused by mitochondrial dysfunction, particularly focusing on mitochondrial dynamics and mitochondrial autophagy, can greatly contribute to the prevention and treatment of muscle atrophy. In this review, we critically summarize the recent research progress on mitochondrial dynamics and mitophagy in skeletal muscle atrophy, and expound on the intrinsic molecular mechanism of skeletal muscle atrophy caused by mitochondrial dynamics and mitophagy. Importantly, we emphasize the potential of targeting mitochondrial dynamics and mitophagy as therapeutic strategies for the prevention and treatment of muscle atrophy, including pharmacological treatment and exercise therapy, and summarize effective methods for the treatment of skeletal muscle atrophy.

Geothermal energy is a clean, abundant, and dependable energy source. Because the formation of a geothermal field is often closely linked to the distribution and development of granite, it is crucial to understand the regularity and formation mechanism of granite geothermal resources to advance the field of geothermal energy. Lancang County is located on the southern edge of the Lincang granite, and contains many hot springs. In this paper, we synthesize rock geochemistry, zircon U–Pb chronology, and other methods to interpret the genesis of granites in Lancang County and their geothermal formation patterns. The study area mainly comprises a Middle Triassic S-type granite with high contents of heat-producing elements. Zircon U–Pb dating results show that the intrusion time of the Lancang granite was 239 Ma. The granite is rich in light rare earth elements, depleted in heavy rare earth elements, and characterized by a negative Eu anomaly. The ɛHf values range from −20.3 to 13.6, indicating the presence of mantle material in the source area. Igneous rocks in Lancang County likely formed in the background of an active continental margin associated with the subduction of the Tethys Ocean to the east, which formed an intra-land orogeny. High contents of radioactive thermogenic elements in the granite, fracture development, and additional heat sources from metamorphic rocks combined to generate high-temperature geothermal resources in the study area. The hydrothermal geothermal model of the granite has the following characteristics: a near heat source, large drop, water storage in fractures, simultaneous geothermal influence in deep and shallow layers, and hot spring and geothermal distribution along deep and large faults, etc. The geothermal reservoirs in the study area are classified into four types: internal fissures in granite, granite paleo-weathering crust, tectonic nappe fractures, and sedimentary deposits associated with granite cooling collapse. These types are of great significance to the understanding of the formation of hydrothermal geothermal heat in this granite area.

Abstract Compressive sensing is favored because it breaks through the constraints of Nyquist sampling law in signal reconstruction. However, the security defects of joint compression encryption and the problem of low quality of reconstructed image restoration need to be solved urgently. In view of this, this paper proposes a compressive sensing image encryption scheme based on optimized orthogonal measurement matrix. Utilizing a combination of DWT and OMP, along with chaos, the proposed scheme achieves high-security image encryption and superior quality in decryption reconstruction. Firstly, the orthogonal optimization method is used to improve the chaotic measurement matrix. Combined with Part Hadamard matrix, the measurement matrix with strong orthogonal characteristics is constructed by Kronecker product. Secondly, the original image is sparsely represented by DWT. Meanwhile, Arnold scrambling is used to disturb the correlation between its adjacent pixels. Following this, the image is compressed and measured in accordance with the principles of compressive sensing and obtain the intermediate image to be encrypted. Finally, the chaotic sequence generated based on 2D-LSCM is used to perform on odd-even interleaved diffusion and row-column permutation at bit-level to obtain the final ciphertext. The experimental results show that this scheme meets the cryptographic requirements of obfuscation, diffusion and avalanche effects, and also has a large key space, which is sufficient to resist brute-force cracking attacks. Based on the sparse and reconstruction algorithm of compressive sensing proposed in this paper, it has better image restoration quality than similar algorithms. Consequently, the compressive sensing image encryption scheme enhances both security and reconstruction quality, presenting promising applications in the evolving landscape of privacy protection for network big data.

Abstract Background The effective management of epilepsy in women of child-bearing age necessitates a concerted effort from multidisciplinary teams. Nevertheless, there exists an inadequacy in the seamless exchange of knowledge among healthcare providers within this context. Consequently, it is imperative to enhance the availability of informatics resources and the development of decision support tools to address this issue comprehensively. Materials and methods The development of the Women with Epilepsy of Child-Bearing Age Ontology (WWECA) adhered to established ontology construction principles. The ontology’s scope and universal terminology were initially established by the development team and subsequently subjected to external evaluation through a rapid Delphi consensus exercise involving domain experts. Additional entities and attribute annotation data were sourced from authoritative guideline documents and specialized terminology databases within the respective field. Furthermore, the ontology has played a pivotal role in steering the creation of an online question-and-answer system, which is actively employed and assessed by a diverse group of multidisciplinary healthcare providers. Results WWECA successfully integrated a total of 609 entities encompassing various facets related to the diagnosis and medication for women of child-bearing age afflicted with epilepsy. The ontology exhibited a maximum depth of 8 within its hierarchical structure. Each of these entities featured three fundamental attributes, namely Chinese labels, definitions, and synonyms. The evaluation of WWECA involved 35 experts from 10 different hospitals across China, resulting in a favorable consensus among the experts. Furthermore, the ontology-driven online question and answer system underwent evaluation by a panel of 10 experts, including neurologists, obstetricians, and gynecologists. This evaluation yielded an average rating of 4.2, signifying a positive reception and endorsement of the system’s utility and effectiveness. Conclusions Our ontology and the associated online question and answer system hold the potential to serve as a scalable assistant for healthcare providers engaged in the management of women with epilepsy (WWE). In the future, this developmental framework has the potential for broader application in the context of long-term management of more intricate chronic health conditions.

Abstract Background Cerebral protection strategies have been investigated since the introduction of aortic arch surgery and have been modified over the centuries. However, the cerebral protective effects of unilateral and bilateral antegrade cerebral perfusion are similar, with opportunities for further improvement. Methods A total of 30 patients who underwent total arch surgery were enrolled in this study. Patients were assigned to the novel continuous whole-brain or unilateral antegrade cerebral perfusion group according to the cerebral perfusion technique used. Preoperative clinical data and 1-year postoperative follow-up data were collected and analyzed. Results There were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of the incidence of permanent neurological deficit, mortality, or therapeutic efficacy. However, the incidence of temporary neurological dysfunction in the novel whole-brain perfusion group was significantly lower than that in the unilateral antegrade cerebral perfusion group. Conclusions In this study, the branch-first approach with a novel whole-brain perfusion strategy had no obvious disadvantages compared with unilateral antegrade cerebral perfusion in terms of cerebral protection and surgical safety. These findings suggest that this new technique is feasible and has application value for total arch surgery.

Abstract Effective watershed management hinges on understanding water sources and pollution origins. In the Hangbu Watershed of Chaohu Lake, China, we analyze pollution source patterns and propose an adaptive strategy. This adaptive strategy is defined as a flexible and dynamic approach that adjusts management practices and policies in response to evolving environmental conditions and emerging data on pollution sources. The analysis includes examining the trends, periodicity, and mutagenicity of pollution sources. The results demonstrated substantial variations in sources, with nitrogen and phosphorus. The adaptive approach enables prioritizing crucial pollution sources, with farmland identified as a significant contributor under varying conditions. Specific pollution sources with growth trends and control robustness have been recognized as vital contributors, even though their contributions to the nitrogen and phosphorus flux at the watershed outlets may not be the most prominent. The results of this study could guide the sustainable management of watersheds.

Highlights The composite films are composed of hollow metal–organic frameworks/layered MXene/nanocellulose with unique alternating electromagnetic structures. The optimized composite films exhibit excellent EMI shielding performance of 66.8 dB at GHz frequency and 114.6 dB at THz frequency. The EMI shielding ability of composite films to electromagnetic waves is verified by practical visualized application simulation. The composite films show remarkable photothermal conversion performance, which can reach 235.4 °C under 0.8 W cm−2.

Abstract Despite the rapid advances in sequencing technology, limited genomic resources are currently available for phytophagous spider mites, which include many important agricultural pests. One of these pests is Tetranychus piercei (McGregor), a serious banana pest in East Asia exhibiting remarkable tolerance to high temperature. In this study, we assembled a high-quality genome of T. piercei using a combination of PacBio long reads and Illumina short reads sequencing. With the assistance of chromatin conformation capture technology, 99.9% of the contigs were anchored into three pseudochromosomes with a total size of 86.02 Mb. Repetitive elements, accounting for 14.16% of this genome (12.20 Mb), are predominantly composed of long-terminal repeats (30.7%). By combining evidence of ab initio prediction, transcripts, and homologous proteins, we annotated 11,881 protein-coding genes. Both the genome and proteins have high BUSCO completeness scores (>94%). This high-quality genome, along with reliable annotation, provides a valuable resource for investigating the high-temperature tolerance of this species and exploring the genomic basis that underlies the host range evolution of spider mites.

Abstract Bifurcation of exceptional points (EPs), particularly higher-order EPs, can offer applications in metrology by amplifying sensitivity, but this method suffers from a tradeoff between sensitivity and robustness. To break this constraint, we experimentally introduce nonlinearity into the EP degeneracy lifting at the coupled electric resonators and observe a sixth-order nonlinear bifurcation which amplifies the sensitivity elevenfold compared to the conventional EP-based approach operating in the linear regime, while maintaining the degrees of freedom, thereby without cost in robustness. Moreover, we discover a chaotic dynamics near the EP due to the nonlinear contribution, which constitutes a distinct difference from the EP degeneracy lifting in the linear regime with random noise. Our study expands the scope of EP degeneracy lifting into nonlinearity, providing a paradigm to exploit the benefit of EPs.

Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is widely recognized as a chronic joint disease characterized by degeneration of knee cartilage and subsequent bone hyperplasia. However, it is important to acknowledge the significant role of muscles in the development and progression of KOA. Muscle function (MF) and muscle quality (MQ) are key factors in understanding the involvement of muscles in KOA. Quantitative indices such as muscle mass, muscle strength, muscle cross‐sectional area, muscle thickness, and muscle fatigue are crucial in assessing MF and MQ. Despite the growing interest in KOA, there is a scarcity of studies investigating the relationship between muscles and this condition. This review aims to examine the commonly used indices and measurement methods for assessing MF and MQ in clinical settings, while also exploring the association between muscles and KOA. Furthermore, this article highlights the importance of restoring MF and MQ to enhance symptom management and improve the quality of life for patients with KOA.

The presented research introduces a novel hybrid deep learning approach for the dynamic prediction of the attitude and position of super-large diameter shields - a critical consideration for construction safety and tunnel lining quality. This study proposes a hybrid deep learning approach for predicting dynamic attitude and position prediction of super-large diameter shield. The approach consists of principal component analysis (PCA) and temporal convolutional network (TCN). The former is used for employing feature level fusion based on features of the shield data to reduce uncertainty, improve accuracy and the data effect, and 9 sets of required principal component characteristic data are obtained. The latter is adopted to process sequence data in predicting the dynamic attitude and position for the advantages and potential of convolution network. The approach’s effectiveness is exemplified using data from a tunnel construction project in China. The obtained results show remarkable accuracy in predicting the global attitude and position, with an average error ratio of less than 2 mm on four shield outputs in 97.30% of cases. Moreover, the approach displays strong performance in accurately predicting sudden fluctuations in shield attitude and position, with an average prediction accuracy of 89.68%. The proposed hybrid model demonstrates superiority over TCN, long short-term memory (LSTM), and recurrent neural network (RNN) in multiple indexes. Shapley additive exPlanations (SHAP) analysis is also performed to investigate the significance of different data features in the prediction process. This study provides a real-time warning for the shield driver to adjust the attitude and position of super-large diameter shields.

Abstract Non-volatile phase-change memory devices utilize local heating to toggle between crystalline and amorphous states with distinct electrical properties. Expanding on this kind of switching to two topologically distinct phases requires controlled non-volatile switching between two crystalline phases with distinct symmetries. Here, we report the observation of reversible and non-volatile switching between two stable and closely related crystal structures, with remarkably distinct electronic structures, in the near-room-temperature van der Waals ferromagnet Fe5−δ GeTe2. We show that the switching is enabled by the ordering and disordering of Fe site vacancies that results in distinct crystalline symmetries of the two phases, which can be controlled by a thermal annealing and quenching method. The two phases are distinguished by the presence of topological nodal lines due to the preserved global inversion symmetry in the site-disordered phase, flat bands resulting from quantum destructive interference on a bipartite lattice, and broken inversion symmetry in the site-ordered phase.

Abstract Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection disrupts the epithelial barrier and triggers airway inflammation. The envelope (E) protein, a core virulence structural component of coronaviruses, may play a role in this process. Pathogens could interfere with transepithelial Cl− transport via impairment of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), which modulates nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) signaling. However, the pathological effects of SARS-CoV-2 E protein on airway epithelial barrier function, Cl− transport and the robust inflammatory response remain to be elucidated. Here, we have demonstrated that E protein down-regulated the expression of tight junctional proteins, leading to the disruption of the airway epithelial barrier. In addition, E protein triggered the activation of Toll-like receptor (TLR) 2/4 and downstream c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) signaling, resulting in an increased intracellular Cl− concentration ([Cl−]i) via up-regulating phosphodiesterase 4D (PDE4D) expression in airway epithelial cells. This elevated [Cl−]i contributed to the heightened airway inflammation through promoting the phosphorylation of serum/glucocorticoid regulated kinase 1 (SGK1). Moreover, blockade of SGK1 or PDE4 alleviated the robust inflammatory response induced by E protein. Overall, these findings provide novel insights into the pathogenic role of SARS-CoV-2 E protein in airway epithelial damage and the ongoing airway inflammation during SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Abstract Background The hospitalization rate of ambulatory care sensitive conditions (ACSCs) has been recognized as an essential indicator reflective of the overall performance of healthcare system. At present, ACSCs has been widely used in practice and research to evaluate health service quality and efficiency worldwide. The definition of ACSCs varies across countries due to different challenges posed on healthcare systems. However, China does not have its own list of ACSCs. The study aims to develop a list to meet health system monitoring, reporting and evaluation needs in China. Methods To develop the list, we will combine the best methodological evidence available with real-world evidence, adopt a systematic and rigorous process and absorb multidisciplinary expertise. Specific steps include: (1) establishment of working groups; (2) generations of the initial list (review of already published lists, semi-structured interviews, calculations of hospitalization rate); (3) optimization of the list (evidence evaluation, Delphi consensus survey); and (4) approval of a final version of China’s ACSCs list. Within each step of the process, we will calculate frequencies and proportions, use descriptive analysis to summarize and draw conclusions, discuss the results, draft a report, and refine the list. Discussion Once completed, China’s list of ACSCs can be used to comprehensively evaluate the current situation and performance of health services, identify flaws and deficiencies embedded in the healthcare system to provide evidence-based implications to inform decision-makings towards the optimization of China’s healthcare system. The experiences might be broadly applicable and serve the purpose of being a prime example for nations with similar conditions.

Abstract Emergent phenomena such as two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) and interfacial superconductivity and ferromagnetism are generally built on the interface between insulating oxide thin films and substrates, e.g., LaAlO3/SrTiO3, where the 2D profiles of these electronic states are precisely confined at the interface of two insulators. Herein we report a high-mobility electron gas state with unusual symmetry at the interface of the Sr2CrMoO6/SrTiO3 (110) heterostructures, the fermiology of which follows the cubic crystallographic symmetry rather than the two-dimensional interface itself, resulting in the identical Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations with applied magnetic field along all the twelve equivalent [110] crystallographic directions of SrTiO3, distinctly different from the 2D nature of the electron gas reported previously. Neutron diffraction verifies the predicted ferrimagnetic ordering between Cr and Mo moments. This, together with the magnetic hysteresis loops and negative magnetoresistance in low-field region, suggests possible spin polarization of itinerant electrons. Therefore, a quasi-3D profile, high mobility (up to 104 cm2 V−1 s−1) and possibly spin polarized electronic state is observed in the double-perovskite-based oxide heterostructures. This finding of the electronic properties in Sr2CrMoO6/SrTiO3 (110) heterostructure expands the knowledge of interfacial physics, as well as shines light on oxide-based electronics and spintronics research.

Abstract The widespread adoption of fifth-generation mobile networks has spurred the rapid advancement of mobile edge computing (MEC). By decentralizing computing and storage resources to the network edge, MEC significantly enhances real-time data access services and enables efficient processing of large-scale dynamic data on resource-limited devices. However, MEC faces considerable security challenges, particularly in cross-domain service environments, where every device poses a potential security threat. To address this issue, this paper proposes a secure cross-domain authentication scheme based on a threshold signature tailored to MEC’s multi-subdomain nature. The proposed scheme employs a (t,n) threshold mechanism to bolster system resilience and security, catering to large-scale, dynamic, and decentralized MEC scenarios. Additionally, the proposed scheme features an efficient authorization update function that facilitates the revocation of malicious nodes. Security analysis confirmed that the proposed scheme satisfies unforgeability, collusion resistance, non-repudiation and forward security. Theoretical evaluation and experimental simulation verify the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed scheme. Compared with existing schemes, the proposed scheme has higher computational performance while implementing secure authorization updates.

Abstract Gestures are a common way people communicate. Gesture-based teleoperation control systems tend to be simple to operate and suitable for most people’s daily use. This paper employed a LeapMotion sensor to develop a mobile robot control system based on gesture recognition, which mainly established connections through a client/server structure. The principles of gesture recognition in the system were studied and the relevant self-investigated algorithms—GestureMoRo, for the association between gestures and mobile robots were designed. Moreover, in order to avoid the unstably fluctuated movement of the mobile robot caused by palm shaking, the Gaussian filter algorithm was used to smooth and denoise the collected gesture data, which effectively improved the robustness and stability of the mobile robot’s locomotion. Finally, the teleoperation control strategy of the gesture to the WATER2 mobile robot was realized, and the effectiveness and practicability of the designed system were verified through multiple experiments.

Abstract Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) has become a commonly used method for the quantification of gene expression. However, accurate qRT-PCR analysis requires a valid internal reference for data normalization. To determine the valid reference characterized with low expression variability among Spodoptera litura samples after microbial pesticide treatments, nine housekeeping genes, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH), arginine kinase, ubiquitin C, actin-5C (ACT5C), actin, ribosomal protein S13 (RPS13), tubulin, acidic ribosomal protein P0 (RPLP0) and ubiquinol-cytochrome c reductase, were evaluated for their suitability using geNorm, Normfinder, BestKeeper, RefFinder and the comparative delta CT methods in this study. S. litura larvae after direct treatment (larvae were immersed in biopesticides), indirect treatment (larvae were fed with biopesticide immersed artificial diets) and comprehensive treatment (larvae were treated with the first two treatments in sequence), respectively with Metarhizium anisopliae, Empedobacter brevis and Bacillus thuringiensis, were investigated. The results indicated that the best sets of internal references were as follows: RPLP0 and ACT5C for direct treatment conditions; RPLP0 and RPS13 for indirect treatment conditions; RPS13 and GAPDH for comprehensive treatment conditions; RPS13 and RPLP0 for all the samples. These results provide valuable bases for further genetic researches in S. litura.

Abstract Neoadjuvant chemoimmunotherapy has emerged as a potential treatment option for resectable head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). In this single-arm phase II trial (NCT04826679), patients with resectable locally advanced HNSCC (T2‒T4, N0‒N3b, M0) received neoadjuvant chemoimmunotherapy with camrelizumab (200 mg), nab-paclitaxel (260 mg/m2), and cisplatin (60 mg/m2) intravenously on day one of each three-week cycle for three cycles. The primary endpoint was the objective response rate (ORR). Secondary endpoints included pathologic complete response (pCR), major pathologic response (MPR), two-year progression-free survival rate, two-year overall survival rate, and toxicities. Here, we report the perioperative outcomes; survival outcomes were not mature at the time of data analysis. Between April 19, 2021 and March 17, 2022, 48 patients were enrolled and received neoadjuvant therapy, 27 of whom proceeded to surgical resection and remaining 21 received non-surgical therapy. The ORR was 89.6% (95% CI: 80.9, 98.2) among 48 patients who completed neoadjuvant therapy. Of the 27 patients who underwent surgery, 17 (63.0%, 95% CI: 44.7, 81.2) achieved a MPR or pCR, with a pCR rate of 55.6% (95% CI: 36.8, 74.3). Treatment-related adverse events of grade 3 or 4 occurred in two patients. This study meets the primary endpoint showing potential efficacy of neoadjuvant camrelizumab plus nab-paclitaxel and cisplatin, with an acceptable safety profile, in patients with resectable locally advanced HNSCC.

Abstract Purpose Prostatitis is a highly prevalent condition that seriously affects men’s physical and mental health. Although epidemiological investigations have provided evidence of a correlation between insufficient sleep and prostatitis, the pathogenesis of prostatitis remains unclear. We sought to identify the underlying mechanism involved and identify a promising therapeutic target. Methods Sleep deprivation (SD) was utilized to establish a mouse model of insufficient sleep in a special device. Prostatitis was observed at different time points post-SD. The degree of prostatitis was evaluated by pathological section and behavioural tests. Using immunofluorescence, western blot, and proteomic analyses, the underlying mechanism of SD-related prostatitis was investigated, and the development and therapeutic target of prostatitis were elucidated. Results SD, as an initial pathological trigger, resulted in a reduction in dihydrotestosterone and melatonin levels. Proteomic analysis revealed that the cGAS-STING pathway may play a significant role in inducing prostatitis. The subsequent results illustrated that the dual reduction in dihydrotestosterone and melatonin led to an accumulation of reactive oxygen species and the release of mitochondrial DNA (mt-DNA). The accumulation of mt-DNA activated the cGAS-STING pathway, which recruited inflammatory cells into the prostatic stroma through the secretion of interferon-β. Consequently, an inflammatory microenvironment was formed, ultimately promoting the development of prostatitis. Notably, mice with SD-induced prostatitis gradually recovered to a normal state within 7 days of recovery sleep. However, after being subjected to SD again, these mice tended to have a more pronounced manifestation of prostatitis within a shorter timeframe, which suggested that prostatitis is prone to relapse. Conclusions The cGAS-STING pathway activated by dual deficiency of dihydrotestosterone and melatonin plays a comprehensive inflammatory role in SD-related prostatitis. This research provides valuable insights into the pathogenesis, therapeutic targets, and prevention strategies of prostatitis.

Introduction Patients with hemophilia (PWH) constantly suffer hemarthrosis, which leads to deformity of the hip joint. Therefore, PWH who are going to receive total hip arthroplasty (THA) should be exclusively treated before the surgery with careful measurement of their proximal femur. Hence, we conducted a retrospective study to explore the anatomical parameters of and differences in the proximal femur in hemophilic patients who underwent THA. Methods The retrospective study comprised data of adult patients who received total hip arthroplasty from 2020 to 2022 in the research center. Patients having a diagnosis of hemophilic arthritis and received THA were included in experimental group, and patients with hip arthritis or femoral head necrosis were taken as control group. Parameters including femoral offset, neck‐shaft angle (NSA), medullary cavity of 20 mm above mid‐lesser trochanter level (T+20), mid‐lesser trochanter level (T), and 20 mm blow it (T−20), and canal flare index (CFI), femoral cortical index (FCI) were measured on X‐ray and CT images with PACS by two independent doctors. Abstract Background To evaluate the relationship between coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection at different time points during pregnancy and perinatal outcomes. Methods This retrospective study included 611 women who hospitalized for delivery between December 7 and April 30, 2023. Based on the different pregnancy weeks infected with COVID-19, the participants were divided into four groups: Group 1 (14–27+6 weeks gestation), Group 2 (28–36+6 weeks gestation), Group 3 (37–39+6 weeks gestation), and Group 4 (≥ 40 weeks gestation). Data including maternal demographic characteristics, clinical profiles, and perinatal outcomes were analyzed. Results There were no significant differences in maternal demographic characteristics among the four groups (P > 0.05). Abstract Background Cholangiocarcinoma represents a malignant neoplasm originating from the hepatobiliary tree, with a subset of tumors developing inside the liver. Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinomas (ICC) commonly exhibit an asymptomatic presentation, rendering both diagnosis and treatment challenging. Cuproptosis, an emerging regulated cell death pathway induced by copper ions, has garnered attention recently. As cancer cells show altered copper metabolism and comparatively higher copper needs, cuproptosis may play a role in the development of ICC. However, studies investigating this possibility are currently lacking. Methods Single-cell and bulk RNA sequence data were analyzed, and correlations were established between the expression of cuproptosis-related molecules and ICC patient survival. Genes with predicting survival were used to create a CUPT score using Cox and LASSO regression and tumor mutation burden (TMB) analysis. The CIBERSORT software was employed to characterize immune cell infiltration within the tumors. Furthermore, immune infiltration prediction, biological function enrichment, and drug sensitivity analyses were conducted to explore the potential implications of the cuproptosis-related signature. The effects of silencing solute carrier family 39 member 4 gene (SLC39A4) expression using siRNA were investigated using assays measuring cell proliferation, colony formation, and cell migration. Key genes of cuproptosis were detected by western blotting. Results The developed CUPT score divided patients into high and low CUPT score groups. Those with a low score had significantly better prognosis and longer survival. In contrast, high CUPT scores were associated with worse clinical outcomes and significantly higher TMB. Comparisons of the two groups also indicated differences in the immune infiltrate present in the tumors. Finally, we were able to identify 95 drugs potentially affecting the cuproptosis pathway. Some of these might be effective in the treatment of ICC. The in vitro experiments revealed that suppressing the expression of SLC39A4 in ICC cell lines resulted in reduced cell proliferation, colony formation, and cell migration. It also led to an increase in cell death and the upregulation of key genes associated with cuproptosis, namely ferredoxin 1 (FDX1) and dihydrolipoyl transacetylase (DLAT). These findings strongly suggest that this cuproptosis-associated molecule may play a pivotal role in the development and metastasis of ICC. Conclusions Changes in the expression of a cuproptosis-related gene signature can predict the clinical prognosis of ICC with considerable accuracy. This supports the notion that cuproptosis influences the diversity and complexity of the immune microenvironment, mutational landscape, and biological behavior of ICC. Understanding this pathway better may hold promise for the development of innovative strategies in the management of this disease.

In this paper, we apply the variational approach for solving the time-space fractal Bogoyavlenskii equation. By the two-scale fractal complex transformation, the fractal modification of Bogoyarlenskii equation is equivalently rewritten as the original Bogoyavlenskii equation. By variational principle, different type solutions including fractal bright soliton solution, fractal bright-like soliton solution, fractal kinky-bright soliton solution and fractal periodic wave solution are provided, which are not touched in the existing literature. Numerical results are presented to show the propagation behaviours.

Chronic non-healing wounds induced by oxidative stress and inflammation can activate inflammatory cells and produce large amounts of inflammatory mediators, which fail to maintain homeostasis in the skin and delay the wound-healing process. To tackle this issue, heparin-loaded hierarchical composite scaffolds comprised of electrospun fibers and electrosprayed microspheres were prepared to act as an effective anti-inflammatory wound dressing. Microspheres with different electrosprayed densities were deposited into the surface of the electrospun fibers for the improvement of surface topographical cues and cellular activities. The results indicated that the electrospun fibers followed by electrosprayed for 3 ​min to fabricate the composite fiber/microsphere scaffolds contributed to the best performance in terms of promoting cellular activities, with no obvious cytotoxicity, good adhesion morphology, and the fastest cell migration rate. In addition, a suitable amount of heparin was added to the composite scaffolds to alleviate inflammation. The significant adsorption efficiency of heparin-loaded composite scaffolds on inflammatory mediator MCP-1 indicates a favorable anti-inflammation effect in vitro. Furthermore, the heparin-loaded hierarchical scaffolds accelerated the pace of inflammatory wound healing in vivo when compared to commercial 3 ​M Tegaderm and non-heparin-loaded scaffolds. Our work provided a facile strategy for fabricating heparin-loaded hierarchical fiber/microsphere scaffolds to modulate cellular activities via topographical cues and accelerating the inflammatory wound healing process by electrostatic interactions between heparin and MCP-1. These findings suggested that the heparin-loaded hierarchical scaffold was expected to be a promising dressing for inflammatory wound healing.

China is tectonically composed of a series of plates and orogenic belts and has been influenced by the Pacific and Indian plates since the Late Paleozoic, forming a regular distribution of Mesozoic and Cenozoic granites. As an important source of geothermal energy, granite is the five elements of geothermal enrichment:geothermal sources; geothermal reservoirs; heat transmission; heat caprock; and heat preservation and it is possible to classify the types of geothermal resources in China according to their distribution in combination with neotectonic movements. China's geothermal energy can be divided into hydrothermal and hot dry rock types in basins and orogenic belts, respectively. Geothermal resources can be divided into hydrothermal, rock, magma, and hybrid geothermal types according to the heat carrier type. Basin geothermal resources are dominated by hydrothermal types, while geothermal energy in orogenic belts with granite includes both hydrothermal and hot dry rock types. Geothermal resources in China can be divided into 6 distinct geothermal regions and 13 subregions, of which the Southwest and Southeast China regions and the Qaidam-Qilian and Jiaoliao subregions in North China with Mesozoic and Cenozoic granites are the most favorable areas for high-temperature hydrothermal and hot dry rock sources. China has complex geological conditions, diverse types of geothermal resources, and broad prospects for development and utilization. Having performed extensive shallow hydrothermal geothermal development and utilization and completed various power generation tests, China's geothermal development and utilization is in a critical stage of transition from the direct utilization of shallow hydrothermal resources to high-temperature geothermal or hot dry rock power generation in middle and deep layers. Basic theoretical research, key technology breakthroughs, and policy incentives are the main issues that need to be addressed in the geothermal industry.

Hainan Island is located in the northwestern South China Sea at the boundary of two tectonic plates. Surface features and actual drilling have confirmed that there are rich geothermal resources in the area, with predicted resources of 480 million GWh. On the basis of the 1:200,000 gravity and 1:10 aeromagnetic data and constrained by the well-explored Fushan Depression and Baocheng Rock Mass, we conducted a systematic study of hot dry rocks and evaluated the development potential of the geothermal resources of the medium-depth and deep hot dry rocks in Hainan Island for the first time. The island is structurally active, with extensive granites, strong volcanic and earthquake activities, and many hot springs, indicating that the geothermal geological conditions are favorable. There are two types of hot dry rocks, sedimentary basin type and uplifted mountain type, on the island. The sedimentary basin-type hot dry rocks are mainly found in the north of the island and have an area of 2657 km2, an average depth of 2480 m, and an average heat reservoir temperature of 230 °C at 6000 m depth. Uplifted mountain-type hot dry rocks with a total area of 13,000 km2 mainly occur in Danzhou in the north of the island and Baocheng in the south. The heat reservoirs of these rocks are Yanshanian intrusive plutons and the average temperature is 236 °C at 6000 m depth. Nine favorable hot dry rock targets are identified, of which five are sedimentary basin types and four are uplifted mountain types. The Fushan and Eman depressions in north Hainan Island and the Baocheng Rock Mass in the south of the island are the preferred exploration targets.

Anaerobic digestion (AD) has been widely used as a promising technology for the treatment of kitchen waste (KW). The effects of several acidification-resisting methods were compared, which included the supplementation of trace elements (TEs) and zero-valent iron (ZVI) / powdered activated carbon (PAC), and the application of the sludge domesticated by acetic acid (HAc) and KW as inoculum. The results showed that the supplementation of TEs and ZVI/PAC at total solid (TS) content of 6% and optimal addition doses resulted in an increase in methane yield to 346 and 366 mL/g VS, respectively. In addition, the methane yields of 327 and 241 mL/g VS were obtained by applying the sludge domesticated with KW and HAc as inoculum, while the methane yield of the control was only 89.2 mL/g VS, representing a relative increase of 288%, 311%, 267%, and 170%. The acidification could be alleviated by applying these methods, and also the methanogenic profile was improved. Furthermore, microbial community analysis revealed that the enrichment of Methanosarcina, which enhanced the substrate utilization capacity and subsequently increased methane production, was achieved through the addition of TEs and ZVI/PAC, along with the application of sludge domesticated by KW.

Abstract Groundwater has a significant influence on the mechanical properties of surrounding rock. Aiming at the large deformation of surrounding rock of red layer soft rock tunnel affected by groundwater, the uniaxial graded loading tests were carried out on red beds soft rock with different water content. The failure process of the specimen was monitored by acoustic emission (AE) and the crack evolution law was analyzed, and the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to compare the microstructure of the specimens before and after immersion. Combined with fractal theory, the monofractal and multifractal characteristics of AE ringing count during the loading process of red beds soft rock were analyzed. The results show that, with the gradual increase of water content, the AE ringing count before the yield stage gradually decreased, and the corresponding cumulative ringing count at the same time gradually decreased, and the decrease was large in the early stage of immersion, and decreased in the later stage. The cumulative ringing curve gradually slowed down, the internal crack appeared earlier, the cumulative ringing curve stepped significantly, the AE signal amplitude gradually weakened, and the bandwidth of each frequency band gradually decreased. The failure of red beds soft rock with different water content is dominated by shear crack, and with the gradual increase of water content, the proportion of shear crack increases gradually, and the AE b value decreases gradually. With the gradual increase of the relative peak strength, the correlation dimension D of red beds soft rock with different water content increases first and then decreases. At 80% of the relative peak strength, the correlation dimension D reaches its maximum value and then drops sharply until it is maintained at a relatively low level, and the correlation dimension D gradually decreases with the water content. The fitting correlation coefficients of different water content (lnC(r), lnr) are all above 0.9, indicating that the AE ringing count of water-bearing red beds soft rock has fractal characteristics, and the higher the correlation coefficient, the higher the self-similarity of AE ringing count sequence. As the weight q gradually increases, the generalized fractal dimension D(q) gradually decreases. When q ≠ 0, under the condition of the same q, D(q) presents a trend of first increasing and then decreasing. The multifractal characteristics of AE ringing count of red beds soft rock with different water content is inverted ‘U’ shape. From the natural state to immerse 1 d, the ∆α gradually increases, and from 1 to 7 d, the ∆α gradually decreases, where Δα = α max − α min represents the spectral width of the multifractal spectrum. When saturation is not reached, ∆f 0 indicates that a large number of cracks are generated inside the specimen and macro cracks are formed, where Δf = f (α max) − f (α min) represents the frequency relationship between different signals of different sizes. This research can provide a reliable theoretical basis for the construction and maintenance of large deformation of water-rich soft rock tunnel excavation, and have certain engineering significance.

Abstract Cellular automata (CA) are computational systems that exhibit complex global behavior arising from simple local rules, making them a fascinating candidate for various research areas. However, challenges such as limited flexibility and efficiency on conventional hardware platforms still exist. In this study, we propose a memristor-based circuit for implementing elementary cellular automata (ECA) by extending the stateful three-memristor logic operations derived from material implication (IMP) logic gates. By leveraging the inherent physical properties of memristors, this approach offers simplicity, minimal operational steps, and high flexibility in implementing ECA rules by adjusting the circuit parameters. The mathematical principles governing circuit parameters are analyzed, and the evolution of multiple ECA rules is successfully demonstrated, showcasing the robustness in handling the stochastic nature of memristors. This approach provides a hardware solution for ECA implementation and opens up new research opportunities in the hardware implementation of CA.

Abstract The purpose is to solve the safety production and management problems of the gold Industrial Chain and give early warning of the safety situation of the gold Industrial Chain. According to the theory of industrial chain security governance and the basic situation of the gold Industrial Chain, this work establishes a gold Industrial Chain model based on smart blockchain and system dynamics (SD), and discusses the application of the gold Industrial Chain in the Internet of Things (IoT) environment. The overall goal of the application of IoT technology to the safety management of intelligent gold mines is to take the gold mine production demand as the driving force. The digitalization of production, electromechanical, safety, dispatching, and other information realizes intelligent digital perception, assists decision-making, guides the safety management of gold mining operations, continuously improves the operation efficiency of the gold mining industry, and drives the development of the industry. Finally, it takes the resource reserve of China’s gold industry from 2011 to 2021 as the research data introduces the weighting method to assess the security situation of China’s gold Industrial Chain from 2011 to 2021. The safety performance of China's environmental industry chain is evaluated through the detailed introduction of the basic information of the gold Industrial Chain. The result shows that the security situation of China’s gold Industrial Chain from 2011 to 2021 shows an overall growth trend, 88.42% higher than in 2014. The security situation of China’s gold Industrial Chain from 2011 to 2021 positively impacted the opening of the domestic gold market and entering the international gold market, improving the security level of China’s gold Industrial Chain. In this work, a gold Industrial Chain security model based on smart blockchain and SD is established to solve the safety problem of the gold Industrial Chain, which can improve the safety level of the gold industry and promote its sustainable development.

Abstract Background Implementation of high-risk human papillomavirus (hrHPV) screening has greatly reduced the incidence and mortality of cervical cancer. However, a triage strategy that is effective, noninvasive, and independent from the subjective interpretation of pathologists is urgently required to decrease unnecessary colposcopy referrals in hrHPV-positive women. Methods A total of 3251 hrHPV-positive women aged 30–82 years (median = 41 years) from International Peace Maternity and Child Health Hospital were included in the training set (n = 2116) and the validation set (n = 1135) to establish Cervical cancer Methylation (CerMe) detection. The performance of CerMe as a triage for hrHPV-positive women was evaluated. Results CerMe detection efficiently distinguished cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2 or worse (CIN2 +) from cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 1 or normal (CIN1 −) women with excellent sensitivity of 82.4% (95% CI = 72.6 ~ 89.8%) and specificity of 91.1% (95% CI = 89.2 ~ 92.7%). Importantly, CerMe showed improved specificity (92.1% vs. 74.9%) in other 12 hrHPV type-positive women as well as superior sensitivity (80.8% vs. 61.5%) and specificity (88.9% vs. 75.3%) in HPV16/18 type-positive women compared with cytology testing. CerMe performed well in the triage of hrHPV-positive women with ASC-US (sensitivity = 74.4%, specificity = 87.5%) or LSIL cytology (sensitivity = 84.4%, specificity = 83.9%). Conclusions PCDHGB7 hypermethylation-based CerMe detection can be used as a triage strategy for hrHPV-positive women to reduce unnecessary over-referrals. Trial registration ChiCTR2100048972. Abstract Background The prognostic significance of the CRAFITY score (CRP and AFP in ImmunoTherapY) has been demonstrated in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients receiving immunotherapy. The purpose of this study was to investigate the utility and the predictive value of CRAFITY score in HCC after transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) in combination with tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) and immunotherapy. Materials and methods Data from patients with advanced HCC treated with TACE plus TKIs and PD-1 inhibitor from January 2019 to June 2022 were collected and analyzed retrospectively. Patients with AFP ≥ 100 ng/mL and those with CRP ≥ 1 mg/dL were assigned a CRAFITY score of 1 point. Patients were divided into three groups according to their CRAFITY score (CRAFITY-low, 0 points; CRAFITY-intermediate, 1 point; and CRAFITY-high, 2 points). The differences in overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS) and adverse events (AEs) were compared among the three groups. Tumor response was evaluated at 3, 6 and 12 months after the first combination treatment. Risk factors for OS and PFS were assessed. Results A total of 70 patients were included. The patients were assigned CRAFITY scores of 0 points (CRAFITY-low, n = 25 [35.71%]), 1 point (CRAFITY-intermediate, n = 29 [41.42%]), and 2 points (CRAFITY-high, n = 16 [22.81%]). Abstract The PD-1/PD-L1 pathway in mucosal immunity is currently actively explored and considered as a target for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) treatment. However, systemic PD-L1 administration may cause unpredictable adverse effects due to immunosuppression. Here we show that reactive oxygen species (ROS)-responsive nanoparticles enhance the efficacy and safety of PD-L1 in a mouse colitis model. The nanoparticles control the accumulation and release of PD-L1 fused to Fc (PD-L1-Fc) at inflammatory sites in the colon. The nanotherapeutics shows superiority in alleviating inflammatory symptoms over systemic PD-L1-Fc administration and mitigates the adverse effects of PD-L1-Fc administration. The nanoparticles-formulated PD-L1-Fc affects production of proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines, attenuates the infiltration of macrophages, neutrophils, and dendritic cells, increases the frequencies of Treg, Th1 and Tfh cells, reshapes the gut microbiota composition; and increases short-chain fatty acid production. In summary, PD-L1-Fc-decorated nanoparticles may provide an effective and safe strategy for the targeted treatment of IBD.

Abstract Developing strategies that emulate the killing mechanism of neutrophils, which involves the enzymatic cascade of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and myeloperoxidase (MPO), shows potential as a viable approach for cancer therapy. Nonetheless, utilizing natural enzymes as therapeutics is hindered by various challenges. While nanozymes have emerged for cancer treatment, developing SOD-MPO cascade in one nanozyme remains a challenge. Here, we develop nanozymes possessing both SOD- and MPO-like activities through alloying Au and Pd, which exhibits the highest cascade activity when the ratio of Au and Pd is 1:3, attributing to the high d-band center and adsorption energy for superoxide anions, as determined through theoretical calculations. The Au1Pd3 alloy nanozymes exhibit excellent tumor therapeutic performance and safety in female tumor-bearing mice, with safety attributed to their tumor-specific killing ability and renal clearance ability caused by ultrasmall size. Together, this work develops ultrasmall AuPd alloy nanozymes that mimic neutrophil enzymatic cascades for catalytic treatment of tumors.

Abstract Background The relationship between the gut mycobiome and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) remains largely unexplored. Methods In this study, we compared the gut fungal populations of 223 ESRD patients and 69 healthy controls (HCs) based on shotgun metagenomic sequencing data, and analyzed their associations with host serum and fecal metabolites. Results Our findings revealed that ESRD patients had a higher diversity in the gut mycobiome compared to HCs. Dysbiosis of the gut mycobiome in ESRD patients was characterized by a decrease of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and an increase in various opportunistic pathogens, such as Aspergillus fumigatus, Cladophialophora immunda, Exophiala spinifera, Hortaea werneckii, Trichophyton rubrum, and others. Through multi-omics analysis, we observed a substantial contribution of the gut mycobiome to host serum and fecal metabolomes. The opportunistic pathogens enriched in ESRD patients were frequently and positively correlated with the levels of creatinine, homocysteine, and phenylacetylglycine in the serum. The populations of Saccharomyces, including the HC-enriched Saccharomyces cerevisiae, were frequently and negatively correlated with the levels of various toxic metabolites in the feces. Conclusions Our results provided a comprehensive understanding of the associations between the gut mycobiome and the development of ESRD, which had important implications for guiding future therapeutic studies in this field.

Abstract Objective To investigate the diagnostic value of diffusion kurtosis magnetic resonance imaging (DKI) and conventional diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) for evaluating the response to first-line chemotherapy in unresectable pancreatic cancer. Materials and methods We retrospectively analyzed 21 patients with clinically and pathologically confirmed unresected pancreatic cancer who received palliative chemotherapy. Three-tesla MRI examinations containing DWI sequences with b values of 0, 100, 700, 1400, and 2100 s/mm2 were performed before and after chemotherapy. Parameters included the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), mean diffusion coefficient (MD), and mean diffusional kurtosis (MK). The performances of the DWI and DKI parameters in distinguishing the response to chemotherapy were evaluated by the area under the curve (AUC) of the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Overall survival (OS) was calculated from the date of first treatment to the date of death or the latest follow-up date. Results The ADCchange and MDchange were significantly higher in the responding group (PR group) than in the nonresponding group (non-PR group) (ADCchange: 0.21 ± 0.05 vs. 0.11 ± 0.09, P = 0.02; MDchange: 0.37 ± 0.24 vs. 0.10 ± 0.12, P = 0.002). No statistical significance was shown when comparing ADCpre, ADCpost, MKpre, MKpost, MKchange, MDpre, and MDpost between the PR and non-PR groups. The ROC curve analysis indicated that MDchange (AUC = 0.898, cutoff value = 0.7143) performed better than ADCchange (AUC = 0.806, cutoff value = 0.1369) in predicting the response to chemotherapy. Conclusion The ADCchange and MDchange demonstrated strong potential for evaluating the response to chemotherapy in unresectable pancreatic cancer. The MDchange showed higher specificity in the classification of PR and non-PR than the ADCchange. Other parameters, including ADCpre, ADCpost, MKpre, MKpost, MKchange, MDpre, and MDpost, are not suitable for response evaluation. The combined model SUMchange demonstrated superior performance compared to the individual DWI and DKI models. Further experiments are needed to evaluate the potential of DWI and DKI parameters in predicting the prognosis of patients with unresectable pancreatic cancer.

Abstract Vaccines have proven effective in protecting populations against COVID-19, including the recombinant COVID-19 vaccine (Sf9 cells), the first approved recombinant protein vaccine in China. In this positive-controlled trial with 85 adult participants (Sf9 cells group: n = 44; CoronaVac group: n = 41), we evaluated the safety, immunogenicity, and protective effectiveness of a heterologous boost with the Sf9 cells vaccine in adults who had been vaccinated with the inactivated vaccine, and found a post-booster adverse events rate of 20.45% in the Sf9 cells group and 31.71% in the CoronaVac group (p = 0.279), within 28 days after booster injection. Neither group reported any severe adverse events. Following the Sf9 cells vaccine booster, the geometric mean titer (GMT) of binding antibodies to the receptor-binding domain of prototype SARS-CoV-2 on day 28 post-booster was significantly higher than that induced by the CoronaVac vaccine booster (100,683.37 vs. 9,451.69, p
