In September 2014, Shanxi Earthquake Agency and the Institute of Geophysics, China Earthquake Administration jointly completed the construction of the geomagnetic station array in the Hengshan fault zone in the north of Shanxi. The geomagnetic station array is composed of 5 GM4 type fluxgate magnetometers, which are respectively installed in Daixian, Shanyin, Yingxian, Fanchi and Huairen to obtain the three-component magnetic field data in the observation area. The 5 measurement points of the geomagnetic station array are located near the grounding electrode of the Jinnan line of high-voltage direct current transmission. By comparing the GM4 type fluxgate magnetometer at the 5 measurement points of the geomagnetic station array with the geomagnetic second data of other stations, the interference amplitude of the high-voltage direct current transmission line (Jinbei-Nanjing) on the geomagnetic data of the Shanxi geomagnetic station array was measured, correlation and error analysis also were carried out, and the fitting formula was obtained. The results show that the variation amplitude of the Z component disturbed by the Jinnan line high-voltage direct current transmission in the Shanxi geomagnetic station array decreases as the vertical distance from the station location to the Jinnan line increases, and the interference amplitudes of the H and D components are linearly correlated with the interference amplitude of the Z component. Taking the variation of the Z component as the dependent variable, using the reference fitting formula to obtain the variation of the H and D components can be applied to the daily processing work of the magnetic field interference of the Shanxi geomagnetic station array under the influence of the Jinnan line high-voltage direct current transmission.

Abstract Background Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T therapy has emerged as a promising treatment for hematologic malignancies. However, cytopenia remains one of the most frequent and challenging adverse effects of this therapy. Methods We conducted a retrospective analysis of 26 patients with relapsed/refractory aggressive B-cell lymphoma who received CAR-T therapy at our center. Subsequently, to investigate measures to address cytopenias following CAR-T therapy, we isolated and generated murine CAR-T cells and bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), establishing a murine syngeneic CAR-T therapy model. We assessed the impact of MSC infusion on hematopoietic recovery post-CAR-T therapy by evaluating complete blood count, bone marrow hematopoietic stem cells and their subpopulations, bone marrow histomorphology, and hematopoiesis-related genes. Results All patients experienced cytopenias to varying degrees, with complete lineage involvement in half of the patients. Grade ≥ 3 cytopenias were observed in 88.46% of the patients. CAR-T therapy was associated with a higher incidence of biphasic, late-onset, or prolonged cytopenias. Survival analysis indicated that neutropenia and lymphopenia tended to be associated with better prognosis, whereas thrombocytopenia tended to be related to poorer outcomes. Through animal experiments, we discovered that MSCs infusion boosted HSCs and their long-term subpopulations, enhancing hematopoietic recovery, particularly in the megakaryocyte lineage, and mitigating bone marrow damage. Importantly, both in vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrated that MSCs did not compromise the activity or antitumor efficacy of CAR-T cells. Conclusions Our findings propose MSCs infusion as a promising strategy to address cytopenias, particularly thrombocytopenia, after CAR-T therapy. This approach could help overcome certain limitations of cellular immunotherapy by enhancing hematopoietic recovery without compromising the efficacy of CAR-T cells. Small cell lung cancer (SCLC), one of the histological subtypes of lung cancer, is characterized by high proliferation, early metastasis, susceptibility to drug resistance and recurrence. For several years, SCLC has always been regarded as a homogeneous disease, treated with a unified radiotherapy and chemotherapy strategy. Despite significant early therapeutic effects, drug resistance and recurrence occur quickly, and there is a lack of satisfactory treatment results, which may be due to insufficient understanding of the tumor heterogeneity of SCLC at present. Recently, the concept of SCLC molecular subtype based on the definition of relatively high expression of lineage transcription factors has been proposed in preclinical studies. This article mainly elaborates on the current status and latest findings of SCLC molecular subtype, emphasizing the potential problems that molecular typing may encounter in clinical practice, aiming to promote understanding of the research progress of molecular subtype in SCLC.

In this work, a novel graphite-based electrochemical filter was developed for the efficient and environmentally friendly treatment of uranium tailings leachate. The filter utilizes graphite particles as filler and carbon felt as a conductor, powered by a DC power supply and driven by a peristaltic pump. In a non-circulating continuous operation filter experiment, uranium tailings leachate was tested for uranium removal efficiency under different operating parameters such as voltage and residence time, using both synthetic wastewater and actual uranium mine wastewater. This study is based on the fundamental principles of metal electrochemical reduction. The efficacy of this device for the continuous flow treatment of uranium tailings leachate was systematically investigated. The mechanism of uranium tailings leachate treatment by the electrochemical filter was elucidated through electrochemical analysis and product characterization. The results highlight that voltage and hydraulic retention time are critical factors influencing the efficiency of electrochemical filter treatment. Specifically, 4.0 V and 10 hours were identified as the optimized voltage and suitable hydraulic residence time, respectively, for the treatment of uranium tailings leachate using the electrochemical filter, resulting in a uranium removal rate exceeding 97%. In actual uranium tailings leachate applications, the maximum extraction rate can reach 5275 μmol/(m3∙h), confirming the feasibility of electrochemical filter in removing uranium from actual uranium tailings leachate and its good selectivity in complex water quality applications, the device can be quickly applied to uranium tailings leachate collection facilities and achieve in-situ uranium extraction. The voltage increase can significantly enhance the uranium extraction performance and can be portablely deployed in uranium mine water. In-situ uranium processing and recovery is achieved in processing and collection facilities. Characterization techniques such as field emission scanning electron microscope-energy spectrum analyzer(FESEM-EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer(XPS) were employed to analyze the reaction products on the graphite particles, revealing that uranium was evenly distributed on the surface of graphite particles and exhibits a stable crystal structure, the main mechanism responsible for uranium removal was adsorption-reduction, with uranium recovery products deposited on the electrode surface in the form of a mixture of U(Ⅳ) and U(Ⅵ). A cost estimation shows that the operational cost of extracting uranium from uranium tailings leachate using this device falls within the range of 176.6 ￥/kgU to 587.5 ￥/kgU. This cost is significantly lower than that of conventional land-based uranium resource development, making it economically viable. This research provides both theoretical and technical support for the efficient and environmentally friendly treatment of uranium tailings leachate.

As a green and environmentally friendly fire gold test method for efficient separation and enrichment of trace precious metals in ore, bismuth gold test effectively avoids the problem of toxic pollution of lead test gold. In this article, Bi2O3 with low toxicity is used as the fire test gold trap of Au element, and Bi2O3 is reduced to Bi by the reducing agent flour in the test ingredient during the high-temperature melting process, and Au2Bi alloy is formed with Au in the samples, and the Ag protective ash blowing method is used to make Au and Ag form about 1mg of Ag zygote. The Ag zygoteum is heated and dissolved by acid solution method to completely enter the solution of Au. In this test, the Au element content in the national standard material GBW 07205 was used as a reference, and the effective pixels of the CCD detector of the continuous light source flame atomic absorption spectrometer were optimized, and 7 were selected as the effective pixels of the CCD detector based on their sensitivity and stability. In the mass concentration range of 0～20 μg/mL, the corresponding absorbance was fitted by the quadratic equation least squares method, the fitting coefficient of the calibration curve was 0.999 8, the characteristic concentration was 0.069 97 μg/mL, and the detection limit of the method was 0.012 7 g/mL. According to the selected experimental method and optimized instrument parameters, Au in the national standard material was determined, and the measured value was in good agreement with the standard value, and the relative standard deviation (RSD, n=6) was 2.23%～4.54%. The established method was applied to the test of Au in actual ore samples, and the recovery rate of spiked was 92.6%～106%. The relative standard deviation (n=6) was 2.53%～4.70%, which met the requirements of the National Geological and Mineral Resources Industry Standard DZ/T 0130-2006.

Abstract Background Considering that changes in the choroidal thickness are closely related to ocular growth, we studied the choroidal thickness (CT) and the blood flow features in children with unilateral myopic anisometropia (UMA) as well as investigating the relationship between choroidal changes and myopia. Methods Subjective refractive, axial length (AL), and biometric parameters were measured in 98 UMA children (age: 8–15 years). CT and choroidal blood-flow features, including the choroidal vessel volume (CVV), choroidal vascularity index (CVI), and choriocapillaris perfusion area (CCPA), were measured through swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography. The macular region was categorized into four concentric circles of diameters 0–1 mm (central fovea), 1–3 mm (parafovea), 3–6 mm (perifovea), and 6–9 mm (extended), and further categorized into superior (S), inferior (I), temporal (T), and nasal (N) quadrants. Results The aforementioned four regions of myopic eyes displayed significantly lower CT, CVV, and CVI than those of non-myopic eyes. CCPA changes differed across different regions of both the eyes (parts of N and T quadrants). There was an inverse association between CT and the interocular AL difference (central and other regions S, T quadrant). No correlation was noted between CVV and CVI with interocular AL difference. Objective To explore the oral mucosal manifestations of Sweet’s syndrome and provide a reference for its early detection and correct diagnosis. Methods The oral mucosal manifestations of a 60-year-old female patient with Sweet’s syndrome are described in detail, followed by a discussion of the related literature. Results The patient had skin erythema of both lower extremities, which was accompanied by oral mucosal ulceration and pain for 3 days. The patient presented with mild cutaneous lesions and diffuse large-scale erosion in the oral mucosa with obvious pain. During the onset of the disease, the patient was accompanied by fever with a temperature of 38.5°C. After visiting the Department of Stomatology, laboratory tests showed an increase in C-reactive protein (35.2 mg/L) and an accelerated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (77.00 mm/h). Scattered red plaques and mild tenderness were observed in the knees and lower limbs. Histopathological examination of the skin lesions revealed scattered infiltration of immature neutrophils across the entire dermis. The patient responded well to glucocorticoid therapy. According to the clinical signs and laboratory examination, combined with the lesion histopathological results, a diagnosis of Sweet’s syndrome was given. The patient was administered 1 mL compound Betamethasone injection only once intramuscularly. In the meantime, the patient was asked to gargle with compound chlorhexidine solution and topically apply recombinant bovine basic fibroblast growth factor solution to the damaged mucosa three times a day for 1 week. After 4 days of medication, the patient’s body temperature had returned to normal and the oral lesions were significantly reduced. After 2 weeks, the erythema in the leg and knee had almost all subsided, and the oral mucosal lesions had disappeared. The patient was followed up 6 months after treatment, with no recurrence of skin lesions. After 2 years of follow-up, the disease was stable with no recurrence. A review of the relevant literature shows that Sweet’s syndrome is a rare inflammatory reactive dermatosis with unknown etiology, which can be divided into three clinical types: specific, tumor-related, and drug-induced. The male/female prevalence ratio is 1:4. The salient clinical manifestations are abrupt onset of painful erythematous plaques or nodules most commonly involving the extremities, often accompanied by pyrexia, elevated neutrophil count, elevation of the erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and positive C-reactive protein. The use of glucocorticoids is the most common treatment for this disease, and most patients see a rapid improvement in skin lesions; however, some may experience infection or recurrence after withdrawal. Some patients with Sweet’s syndrome are accompanied by oral lesions, but cases of oral mucosal damage have been rarely reported, and this condition is easily misdiagnosed. Conclusion Oral mucosal lesions may be extraterritorial manifestations of Sweet’s syndrome, and the patient’s systemic condition should be comprehensively considered. Skin biopsy should be completed as soon as possible to make a clear diagnosis, so as not to delay the disease.

The failure of butterfly plastic zone in roadway surrounding rock is an important reason for the large deformation of roadway surrounding rock. In recent years, it has attracted the attention of roadway support workers. The understanding on the deformation mechanism of surrounding rock in the butterfly plastic zone is the basis for realizing the control of surrounding rock in soft rock roadway. However, there are limited studies on the deformation mechanism of surrounding rock in the butterfly failure theory. In view of the above problems, the large deformation characteristics of the south transport roadway in a mine in the southern China are taken as the research object. Based on the analysis of the stress environment and geological conditions of the roadway, the distribution of surrounding rock cracks, the deformation mechanism and control methods of the roadway are systematically studied. The results show that the south transport roadway is a typical extremely unequal pressure soft rock roadway. After the excavation of the roadway, the surrounding rock cracks are distributed in a ‘butterfly’ shape. The ‘butterfly fracture zone’ is concentrated in the ‘butterfly plastic zone’. The fractures of the surrounding rock at the butterfly leaf are mainly shear fractures, and the shear fractures at the butterfly leaf are mostly distributed around the roadway in a ‘ring’ distribution, while the tensile fractures are concentrated near the free surface of the surrounding rock of the roadway. There are two main aspects of the stress characteristics of the surrounding rock in the butterfly plastic zone. One is the deflection of the principal stress direction of the surrounding rock, which is manifested in the annular distribution of the maximum principal stress around the roadway. The direction of the minimum principal stress in the upper part of the roadway points to the center of the roadway, and the direction of the minimum principal stress in the lower part of the roadway deviates from the center of the roadway. The second is that the maximum / minimum principal stress ratio of the surrounding rock is large, and the principal stress ratio contour is ‘butterfly’ distributed. According to the distribution characteristics and stress characteristics of surrounding rock cracks in plastic zone, the mechanical dilatancy model of surrounding rock with weak surface is established. It is considered that the dilatancy effect of surrounding rock under this stress characteristic is strong, and the dilatancy effect makes the surrounding rock squeeze into the roadway space, which makes the roadway produce large deformation. The irregular distribution of surrounding rock fissures and the unreasonable original support scheme are the main reasons for the large deformation of the roadway. The study mentioned above is used to suggest a differentiated support system, the heart of which is ‘full-section prestressed short anchor cable + key part long anchor cable strengthening support + grouting’. Field observation demonstrates that the revised support plan can successfully manage the surrounding rock’s deformation and guarantee the stability of the roadway while it is in operation.

Abstract Controlling the concentrations of H2O and CO2 at the reaction interface is crucial for achieving efficient electrochemical CO2 reduction. However, precise control of these variables during catalysis remains challenging, and the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. Herein, guided by a multi-physics model, we demonstrate that tuning the local H2O/CO2 concentrations is achievable by thin polymer coatings on the catalyst surface. Beyond the often-explored hydrophobicity, polymer properties of gas permeability and water-uptake ability are even more critical for this purpose. With these insights, we achieve CO2 reduction on copper with Faradaic efficiency exceeding 87% towards multi-carbon products at a high current density of −2 A cm−2. Encouraging cathodic energy efficiency (>50%) is also observed at this high current density due to the substantially reduced cathodic potential. Additionally, we demonstrate stable CO2 reduction for over 150 h at practically relevant current densities owning to the robust reaction interface. Moreover, this strategy has been extended to membrane electrode assemblies and other catalysts for CO2 reduction. Our findings underscore the significance of fine-tuning the local H2O/CO2 balance for future CO2 reduction applications.

Abstract Abscisic acid (ABA) plays a crucial role in promoting plant stress resistance and seed dormancy. However, how ABA regulates rice quality remains unclear. This study identifies a key transcription factor SLR1-like2 (SLRL2), which mediates the ABA-regulated amylose content (AC) of rice. Mechanistically, SLRL2 interacts with NF-YB1 to co-regulate Wx, a determinant of AC and rice quality. In contrast to SLR1, SLRL2 is ABA inducible but insensitive to GA. In addition, SLRL2 exhibits DNA-binding activity and directly regulates the expression of Wx, bHLH144 and MFT2. SLRL2 competes with NF-YC12 for interaction with NF-YB1. NF-YB1 also directly represses SLRL2 transcription. Genetic validation supports that SLRL2 functions downstream of NF-YB1 and bHLH144 in regulating rice AC. Thus, an NF-YB1-SLRL2-bHLH144 regulatory module is successfully revealed. Furthermore, SLRL2 regulates rice dormancy by modulating the expression of MFT2. In conclusion, this study revealed an ABA-responsive regulatory cascade that functions in both rice quality and seed dormancy.

A powder metallurgy superalloy prepared by hot pressing (HP) was forged under static and oscillatory pressures. The microstructure, mechanical properties and fracture behavior of the sample before and after forging were characterized in detail. The results showed that the forging processes could effectively break the prior particle boundaries (PPBs) and reduce the PPBs precipitates, thus significantly improved the mechanical properties of the material. In particular, the hot oscillatory forging (HOF) process increased the tensile elongation and stress rapture life of the hot forged sample by 1.3 and 3.5 times, respectively. The present study suggests that HOF could be a promising technique for preparing high-performance superalloys.

Background: Real-world data on C-MET protein overexpression in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients, particularly among the Asian Chinese population, are limited. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the clinicomolecular characteristics and prognosis of C-MET overexpression in Chinese NSCLC patients, focusing on those with positive C-MET overexpression (immunohistochemistry (IHC) 3+). Design: A retrospective and observational study. Methods: Data were collected from NSCLC patients diagnosed at the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University between November 2006 and April 2021. We identified C-MET overexpression using IHC and C-MET overexpression positivity was defined as IHC 3+ with ⩾50% tumor cells. Additionally, patient genotypes were collected for subgroup analysis. Results: Data from 9785 NSCLC patients were collected. C-MET (−) accounted for 5% (503/9785), C-MET (+) for 27% (2654/9785), C-MET (++) for 36% (3464/9785), and C-MET (+++) for 32% (3164/9785). Genetic testing was available for 4326 patients. Wild-type was observed in 37% (1591 cases), with epidermal growth factor receptor ( EGFR ) abnormalities being the most common at 49% (2127 cases). The Monoamine Oxidase-A (MAOA) EcoRV polymorphism (rs1137070) is a unique synonymous mutation (c.1409 T > C) within the MAOA gene, which plays a crucial role in Maoa gene expression and function. This study aimed to explore the relationship between the mouse Maoa rs1137070 genotype and differences in MAOA gene expression. Mice carrying the CC genotype of rs1137070 exhibited a significantly lower Maoa expression level, with an odds ratio of 2.44 compared to the T carriers. Moreover, the wild-type TT genotype of MAOA demonstrated elevated mRNA expression and a longer half-life. We also delved into the significant expression and structural disparities among genotypes. Furthermore, it was evident that different aspartic acid synonymous codons within Maoa influenced both MAOA expression and enzyme activity, highlighting the association between rs1137070 and MAOA. To substantiate these findings, a dual-luciferase reporter assay confirmed that GAC was more efficient than GAT binding. Conversely, the synonymous mutation altered Maoa gene expression in individual mice. An RNA pull-down assay suggested that this alteration could impact the interaction with RNA-binding proteins. In summary, our results illustrate that synonymous mutations can indeed regulate the downregulation of gene expression, leading to changes in MAOA function and their potential association with neurological-related diseases.

Agricultural drought is a major natural disaster affecting biomass accumulation and causing food loss, exacerbated by the increasing frequency of flash droughts and compounded drought-heatwave events. Traditional optical remote sensing indices cannot directly represent the water content of vegetation, resulting in a limited understanding of crop response to drought. To address this gap, we investigated the responsiveness of microwave Vegetation Optical Depth (VOD) with four bands (L-, C-, X-, KU-) and four emerging VOD-derived products to drought conditions in crops in the Midwest US. These products include the normalized Difference Between Night and Day VOD (nVOD), Slope of the Regression of Day and Night VOD (σ), Standardized VOD Index (SVODI), and VOD to estimate Gross Primary Productivity (VOD2GPP). They employ different theoretical modeling approaches to crop growth and water use strategies. We comprehensively analyzed the trend, seasonality, and residual of VODs, using Leaf Area Index (LAI) for comparison, and further assessed the lagged and cumulative effects, quantified drought sensitivity, and captured responsiveness to cumulative drought using thresholds. The results showed a time lag in the response of VOD series to drought as indicated by the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI). VODs achieved faster responses and higher correlations compared to LAI. Among them, VOD_L exhibited the most statistically significant pixels (39.84%) and positive Rmax-lag with 96.81% of all pixels. For cumulative effects, VOD_L, VOD_C, VOD_X, VOD_KU, and SVODI were highly correlated in the early stages of droughts. We also found that crops in Iowa exhibited medium to high drought sensitivity (average values of 0.55 to 0.74), with the highest drought sensitivity calculated using the isohydricity indicator, σ. Based on threshold comparison, σ showed a timely response in the first month of drought (average of −0.62), whereas VOD_L and VOD_C performed best in the second month (both averaging −1.85), and VOD2GPP (−2.94) was the most responsive in the third month. Due to water use strategy, maize responded more quickly to the onset of drought compared to soybeans. Overall, the results demonstrated that VOD is promising for crop phenology and drought research. This study provides the first comprehensive investigation of the diverse capabilities of multiple VOD-based indices in drought monitoring across various timescales and croplands.

Summary: Background: In non-high-risk individuals, risk-category-based atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) screening strategies may be more cost-effective than one-size-fits-all approaches. However, current decisions are constrained by a lack of research evidence. We aimed to explore appropriate risk-category-based screening interval strategies for non-high-risk individuals in ASCVD primary prevention in the Chinese population. Methods: We used data from 28,624 participants in the China Kadoorie Biobank (CKB) who had completed at least two field surveys. The risk assessment tools were the 10-year ASCVD risk prediction models developed based on the CKB cohort. We constructed multistate Markov models to model disease progression and estimate transition probabilities between different risk categories. The total person-years spent unidentified in the high-risk state over a 10-year period were calculated for each screening interval protocol. We also estimated the number of ASCVD events prevented, quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) gained, and costs saved when compared to the 3-yearly screening protocol. Findings: When compared to the uniform 3-yearly protocol, most risk-category-based screening interval protocols would identify more high-risk individuals timely, thus preventing more ASCVD events and gaining QALYs. A few of them would reduce total health-care costs. The protocol, which used 6-year, 3-year, and 2-year screening intervals for low-risk, intermediate-low-risk, and intermediate-high risk individuals, was optimal, and would reduce the person-years spent unidentified in the high-risk category by 17.9% (95% CI: 13.1%–21.9%), thus preventing an estimated 113 thousand (95% CI: 83–138) hard ASCVD events for Chinese adults aged 30–79 over a 10-year period. When using a lower cost of statin therapy, more screening protocols would gain QALYs while saving costs. Interpretation: For the primary prevention of ASCVD, risk-category-based screening protocols outperformed the one-size-fits-all approach in the Chinese population. Terrain surface roughness, often described abstractly, poses challenges in quantitative characterization with various descriptors found in the literature. In this study, we compared five commonly used roughness descriptors, exploring correlations among their quantified terrain surface roughness maps across three terrains with distinct spatial variations. Additionally, we investigated the impacts of spatial scales and interpolation methods on these correlations. Dense point cloud data obtained through Light Detection and Ranging technique were used in this study. The findings highlighted both global pattern similarities and local pattern distinctions in the derived roughness maps, emphasizing the significance of incorporating multiple descriptors in studies where local roughness values play a crucial role in subsequent analyses. The spatial scales were found to have a smaller impact on rougher terrain, while interpolation methods had minimal influence on roughness maps derived from different descriptors.

The lateral earth pressure at rest is typically considered in situations where lateral wall movements are negligible. Determining the coefficient of lateral earth pressure at rest (referred to as K0) often relies on established classical equations. However, these equations often overlook the influence of the width of the backfill soil on lateral earth pressure. While this omission is generally acceptable when the backfill soil is wide enough, there are instances where a retaining wall supports backfill soils of limited width, such as basement walls between adjacent buildings. Yet, there is limited research addressing the impact of narrow backfill in such scenarios. We aimed to address this gap by investigating variations in K0 values under different conditions, including backfill width and soil properties. Using ABAQUS for numerical simulations, we refined and validated our model using relevant laboratory experimental data. Subsequently, the validated model was applied to various simulation scenarios. For narrow backfill widths (ranging from 0.1 to 0.7 times the retaining wall height), our findings indicated a general decrease in K0 values with decreasing backfill widths, often smaller than those estimated using classical equations. Additionally, along the depth of the wall, K0 values tended to decrease with increasing depth for narrow backfill widths. These findings contribute to our understanding of the impact of narrow backfill on K0.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a malignant disease of the hematologic system. The current treatment is based on chemotherapeutic drugs, which are becoming less effective due to drug resistance. TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) is an apoptotic protein used to treat cancer that does not affect healthy cells. In recent years, however, ALL cells (e.g., U937) have become more resistant to TRAIL. A novel andrographolide derivative (AND7) with high efficiency and low toxicity was synthesized and combined with TRAIL after the optimal combination ratio was screened using U937 cells. We used peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from patients before the initial treatment of ALL as a model and PBMCs from healthy subjects as a control to determine the mechanism underlying ALL treatment. AND7/TRAIL combination treatment was shown to prevent the original TRAIL-resistant cells from activating the caspase-8/caspase-3 pathway through DR4/DR5 and promote apoptosis via expression of ROS and the apoptotic gene, P53, to achieve an anti-cancer effect. Notably, this study demonstrated that the AND7/TRAIL combination enhanced the anti-cancer effect of AND7 and improved TRAIL resistance. Therefore, the AND7/TRAIL combination is promising for treating ALL and lays the foundation for clinical research.

The microwave-derived vegetation optical depth (VOD) products were used to monitor aboveground biomass (AGB) at regional to global scales, but the ability of VOD to monitor AGB in China is uncertain. This study evaluated the sensitivity of four VOD products (e.g. L-VOD, IB-VOD, LPDR-VOD, and Liu-VOD) and optical vegetation indices (VI) (e.g. NDVI, EVI, LAI, and tree cover from MODIS) to the AGB across China. Our results showed tree cover product has the highest spatial agreement with reference AGBs (indicated by the median correlation value of 0.85), followed by L-VOD (with a median correlation value of 0.80), which performs better than other VIs and VODs. Further comparisons between reference and estimated AGB computed using the fitted logistic regression showed that AGB estimations from tree cover and L-VOD outperformed the estimations from other VIs and VODs over most vegetation types (except forest), indicated by the higher median correlation value of 0.86 and 0.83 and lower RMSD of 23.9 and 27.3 Mg/ha, respectively. The good performance of tree cover could be partly due to that tree cover product is not independent from the reference AGBs. The good performance of L-VOD can be explained by its higher sensitivity to the vegetation characteristics of the entire canopy (including woody component), relative to other VODs and VIs. Among the six reference AGB products, Saatchi-WT and Saatchi-RF products were found to have the best correlations with VIs and VODs. This study demonstrates that microwave VODs, particularly L-VOD, are effective proxies for large-scale monitoring of vegetation AGB in China.

With the increasing depth of coal mining, the stability control of surrounding rock in deep roadway has become one of major problems in the mining field, and the effect of surrounding rock control in deep roadway is directly related to the safe production and health of personnel in underground coal mines. The emergence of plastic zone after roadway excavation is the main reason for the stability of the surrounding rock of the roadway. From the perspective of the formation and expansion of the plastic zone, this paper discusses the intrinsic relationship between the roadway damage mode and the distribution of the plastic zone of surrounding rock on the basis of the results from collating and summarizing the existing roadway damage theory and the theory of the plastic zone of surrounding rock. It is believed that the control of the surrounding rock of roadway is essentially the process of controlling the formation and expansion of the plastic zone of surrounding rock. The expansion of the plastic zone of surrounding rock and the control effect of anchor support on the plastic zone of surrounding rock have become an important theoretical basis for the scientific and effective control of surrounding rock in roadway, and based on this, the authors propose the theory and technology for the stability control of surrounding rock in roadway. The results show that the plastic zone is the product of roadway excavation, and the formation and expansion of the plastic zone of surrounding rock is the result of mine pressure. For deep roadways, the appearance of the plastic zone of surrounding rock is inevitable. Scientific control of plastic zone requires a comprehensive understanding of the role played by the plastic zone in roadway surrounding rock. It is necessary to allow the surrounding rock to release the energy in the rock body through plastic failure, but also to prevent the disorderly expansion of the plastic zone. Therefore, in the process of controlling the surrounding rock of roadway, the self-bearing capacity of the surrounding rock should be given a full play as the main focus, and the support intervention should be supplemented. The control of plastic zone of surrounding rock in deep roadway is global and procedural. The control of the plastic zone of the surrounding rock in the whole life of roadway is divided into three stages. By regulating the shape of the plastic zone and inhibiting the expansion of the plastic zone, the stability control of the surrounding rock of deep roadway is realized.

Abstract With the advancement of coal resources mining to the deep part, the control of the surrounding rock of the roadway has become one of the main problems in the field of mining. At the present stage, the bolt support technology of the roadway in China still faces problems such as unclear support mechanism and poor support effect. Based on the mechanism of bolt support, through theoretical analysis and experimental research, this study proposes the differentiated support technology for roadways based on the mechanical response of the plastic zone and applies this method in the Gada Coal Mine. The results of the study showed that the plastic zones with different shapes have different mechanical responses. compared with other plastic zone shapes, the control method of the roadway with a butterfly‐shaped plastic zone is more complex. Consequently, the support design of a bolt should not only consider the scope of the plastic zone of support construction but also grasp the development law of the plastic zone. Effective support measures should be taken as early as possible for roadways with butterfly‐shaped plastic zones to prevent aggressive development of the butterfly‐shaped plastic zone. Field tests show that this support method realizes the ideal supporting effect in practical applications.

Abstract Background Generating elite rice varieties with high yield and superior quality is the main goal of rice breeding programs. Key agronomic traits, including grain size and seed germination characteristics, affect the final yield and quality of rice. The RGA1 gene, which encodes the α-subunit of rice G-protein, plays an important role in regulating rice architecture, seed size and abiotic stress responses. However, whether RGA1 is involved in the regulation of rice quality and seed germination traits is still unclear. Results In this study, a rice mutant small and round grain 5 (srg5), was identified in an EMS-induced rice mutant library. Systematic analysis of its major agronomic traits revealed that the srg5 mutant exhibited a semi-dwarf plant height with small and round grain and reduced panicle length. Analysis of the physicochemical properties of rice showed that the difference in rice eating and cooking quality (ECQ) between the srg5 mutant and its wild-type control was small, but the appearance quality was significantly improved. Interestingly, a significant suppression of rice seed germination and shoot growth was observed in the srg5 mutant, which was mainly related to the regulation of ABA metabolism. RGA1 was identified as the candidate gene for the srg5 mutant by BSA analysis. A SNP at the splice site of the first intron disrupted the normal splicing of the RGA1 transcript precursor, resulting in a premature stop codon. Additional linkage analysis confirmed that the target gene causing the srg5 mutant phenotype was RGA1. Finally, the introduction of the RGA1 mutant allele into two indica rice varieties also resulted in small and round rice grains with less chalkiness. Conclusions These results indicate that RGA1 is not only involved in the control of rice architecture and grain size, but also in the regulation of rice quality and seed germination. This study sheds new light on the biological functions of RGA1, thereby providing valuable information for future systematic analysis of the G-protein pathway and its potential application in rice breeding programs.

Abstract Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most common primary malignant tumor of bone. Remodelin, an inhibitor of the N (4)-Acetylcytidine (ac4C) acetylation modifying enzyme N-acetyltransferase 10 (NAT10), has been shown to have therapeutic effects on cancer in several studies, and our previous studies have confirmed the inhibitory effect of Remodelin on OS cells, however, the mechanism of action has not yet been elucidated. We used network pharmacological analysis to quantify the therapeutic targets of Remodelin against OS. acRIP-seq and RNA-seq were performed to investigate the inhibitory activity of Remodelin on acetylation and its effect on the transcriptome after intervening in OS cells U2OS with Remodelin in vitro. Key target genes were deduced based on their pharmacological properties, combined with network pharmacology results and sequencing results. Finally, the deduced target genes were validated with vitro experiments. Network pharmacological analysis showed that 2291 OS-related target genes and 369 Remodelin-related target genes were obtained, and 116 overlapping genes were identified as Remodelin targets for OS treatment. Sequencing results showed that a total of 13,736 statistically significant ac4C modification peaks were detected by acRIP-seq, including 6938 hypoacetylation modifications and 6798 hyperacetylation modifications. A total of 2350 statistically significant mRNAs were detected by RNA-seq, of which 830 were up-regulated and 1520 were down-regulated. Association analyses identified a total of 382 genes that were Hypoacetylated-down, consistent with inhibition of mRNA acetylation and expression by Remodelin. Five genes, CASP3, ESR2, FGFR2, IGF1 and MAPK1, were identified as key therapeutic targets of Remodelin against OS. Finally, in vitro experiments, CCK-8 and qRT-PCR demonstrated that Remodelin indeed inhibited the proliferation of OS cells and reduced the expression of three genes: ESR2, IGF1, and MAPK1. In conclusion, ESR2, IGF1 and MAPK1 were identified as key therapeutic targets of Remodelin against OS. This reveals the target of Remodelin's pharmacological action on OS and provides new ideas for the treatment of OS.

Abstract The treatment of critical-size bone defects with irregular shapes remains a major challenge in the field of orthopedics. Bone implants with adaptability to complex morphological bone defects, bone-adhesive properties, and potent osteogenic capacity are necessary. Here, a shape-adaptive, highly bone-adhesive, and ultrasound-powered injectable nanocomposite hydrogel is developed via dynamic covalent crosslinking of amine-modified piezoelectric nanoparticles and biopolymer hydrogel networks for electrically accelerated bone healing. Depending on the inorganic-organic interaction between the amino-modified piezoelectric nanoparticles and the bio-adhesive hydrogel network, the bone adhesive strength of the prepared hydrogel exhibited an approximately 3-fold increase. In response to ultrasound radiation, the nanocomposite hydrogel could generate a controllable electrical output (-41.16 to 61.82 mV) to enhance the osteogenic effect in vitro and in vivo significantly. Rat critical-size calvarial defect repair validates accelerated bone healing. In addition, bioinformatics analysis reveals that the ultrasound-responsive nanocomposite hydrogel enhanced the osteogenic differentiation of bone mesenchymal stem cells by increasing calcium ion influx and up-regulating the PI3K/AKT and MEK/ERK signaling pathways. Overall, the present work reveals a novel wireless ultrasound-powered bone-adhesive nanocomposite hydrogel that broadens the therapeutic horizons for irregular bone defects.

Two L-band passive microwave satellite sensors, onboard the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) launched in 2009 and Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) launched in 2015, are specifically designed for surface soil moisture (SM) monitoring. The first global continuous fused L-band satellite SM product based on SMOS and SMAP observations (SMOS-SMAP-INRAE-BORDEAUX, the so-called Fused-IB) was recently released to the public. Currently, the performance of Fused-IB has only been evaluated collectively over the entire data records in the study period, without specific evaluation for individual seasons. To fill this gap, this study intercompared the Fused-IB and the enhanced SMAP-L3 version 6 (SMAP-E) SM products against in situ SM data from the International Soil Moisture Network (ISMN) from 2016 to 2020 regarding the whole period and different seasons. We aim to investigate the performance of these two products at different time scales and to explore the potential eco-hydrological factors (i.e., precipitation and vegetation) driving their seasonal variations. Results show that both SM products are in good agreement with the in situ measurements, demonstrating high median correlation (R) and low ubRMSD (median R = 0.70 and ubRMSD = 0.058 m3/m3 for Fused-IB vs. R = 0.68 and ubRMSD = 0.059 m3/m3 for SMAP-E) during 2016–2020. For most land use and land cover (LULC) types, Fused-IB outperformed SMAP-E with higher accuracy and lower errors, particularly in forests, partly due to the advantage of the robust SMAP-IB (SMAP-INRAE-BORDEAUX) algorithm used to generate Fused-IB in forests, which avoids the pronounced saturation effects of vegetation optical depth caused by relying on optical information. Besides, both products had superior performances across most LULC types in summer (JJA) and autumn (SON), yet increased uncertainties were observed in forests, grasslands, and croplands during spring (MAM) and winter (DJF). These uncertainties could be mainly attributed to the effects of vegetation growth in forests, grasslands and croplands, and the interception of water from rainfall events in grasslands. The results of this study can serve as a reference for algorithm developers to enhance the accuracy of SM and thus promote hydro-meteorological applications that benefit from L-band radiometer soil moisture products.

The metal-on-metal (MoM) artificial hip joint is a prosthesis used in early hip arthroplasty, particularly for hip resurfacing and total hip arthroplasty. However, abrasion and corrosion of MoM bearings result in the production of metal ions, such as cobalt and chromium, thereby inducing several complications such as inflammatory pseudotumor, aseptic inflammation, and allergy to metal ions (delayed type IV hypersensitivity). In this case report, we present a patient who was hospitalized for recurrence of a mass in the right inguinal area. In 2010, the patient underwent right MoM total hip arthroplasty for right femoral head necrosis and exhibited a good postoperative recovery. In 2019, the patient experienced pain in the right hip with activity limitation without any evident triggers, and a palpable mass was observed in the right inguinal area. A large periprosthetic mass was resected under general anesthesia, and the patient recovered well after the operation. Based on post-surgery imaging and pathological examinations, the mass was diagnosed as a periprosthetic inflammatory pseudotumor. In 2021, the inflammatory pseudotumor recurred at the same site. He then underwent right total hip revision surgery under epidural anesthesia and recovered well after surgery. No recurrence was noted at moderate follow-up. The incidence of inflammatory pseudotumors is high in MoM hip arthroplasty. Early revision is necessary in patients who meet the indications for revision, while regular postoperative follow-up is crucial.

Vegetation Optical Depth (VOD), a vegetation parameter that quantifies the extinction effect of microwaves penetrating the canopy, plays a crucial role in global-scale biomass monitoring and climate change research. However, the spatial gridding of existing long-term VOD products is relatively coarse (approximately 25 km), with restrictions on their application at a regional scale. High-resolution active-microwave proxies and optical vegetation indices can potentially be used to disaggregate coarse-resolution VOD, but it is unclear which proxy is optimal. In this paper, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and active-microwave proxies (VH, VV, and cross-polarization ratio CR) from Sentinel-1 were quantitatively assessed with VOD products at various frequencies (L-/C-/X-VOD) across the contiguous United States (U.S.). The results showed that VH (R = 0.80) and NDVI (R = 0.77) exhibit a high spatial correlation with L-VOD products. For temporal correlation, NDVI had the highest overall performances with all VOD products, but good correlations were also achieved with CR and, to a lesser extent, VH. Further comparisons of the performance between Brightness Temperature (TB) and VOD revealed that while TB displayed a strong temporal correlation with active-microwave proxies, its spatial correlations with such proxies were low. In contrast, VOD had good correlations both temporally and spatially with active-microwave proxies (e.g., VH). These evidences suggested that the downscaling of VOD using the combination of VH and other proxies could be an alternative promising method to estimate high-resolution VOD.

Monitoring forest carbon (C) stocks is essential to better assess their role in the global carbon balance, and to better model and predict long-term trends and inter-annual variability in atmospheric CO2 concentrations. On a national scale, national forest inventories (NFIs) can provide estimates of forest carbon stocks, but these estimates are only available in certain countries, are limited by time lags due to periodic revisits, and cannot provide spatially continuous mapping of forests. In this context, remote sensing offers many advantages for monitoring above-ground biomass (AGB) on a global scale with good spatial (50–100 m) and temporal (annual) resolutions. Remote sensing has been used for several decades to monitor vegetation. However, traditional methods of monitoring AGB using optical or microwave sensors are affected by saturation effects for moderately or densely vegetated canopies, limiting their performance. Low-frequency passive microwave remote sensing is less affected by these saturation effects: saturation only occurs at AGB levels of around 400 t/ha at L-band (frequency of around 1.4 GHz). Despite its coarse spatial resolution of the order of 25 km × 25 km, this method based on the L-VOD (vegetation optical depth at L-band) index has recently established itself as an essential approach for monitoring annual variations in forest AGB on a continental scale. Thus, L-VOD has been applied to forest monitoring in many continents and biomes: in the tropics (especially in the Amazon and Congo basins), in boreal regions (Siberia, Canada), in Europe, China, Australia, etc. However, no reference study has yet been published to analyze L-VOD in detail in terms of capabilities, validation and results. This paper fills this gap by presenting the physical principles of L-VOD calculation, analyzing the performance of L-VOD for monitoring AGB and reviewing the main applications of L-VOD for tracking the carbon balance of global vegetation over the last decade (2010–2019).

Articular cartilage injuries present a significant global challenge, particularly in the aging population. These injuries not only restrict movement due to primary damage but also exacerbate elderly degenerative lesions, leading to secondary cartilage injury and osteoarthritis. Addressing osteoarthritis and cartilage damage involves overcoming several technical challenges in biological treatment. The use of induced mesenchymal stem cells (iMSCs) with functional gene modifications emerges as a solution, providing a more stable and controllable source of Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) with reduced heterogeneity. Furthermore, In addition, this review encompasses strategies aimed at enhancing exosome efficacy, comprising the cultivation of MSCs in three-dimensional matrices, augmentation of functional constituents within MSC-derived exosomes, and modification of their surface characteristics. Finally, we delve into the mechanisms through which MSC-exosomes, sourced from diverse tissues, thwart osteoarthritis (OA) progression and facilitate cartilage repair. This review lays a foundational framework for engineering iMSC-exosomes treatment of patients suffering from osteoarthritis and articular cartilage injuries, highlighting cutting-edge research and potential therapeutic pathways.
