Rational surface engineering of noble metal-doped photocatalysts is essential for the efficient conversion of solar energy into chemical energy, but it is still challenging to perform. Herein, we reported an effective strategy for structuring alloyed CuPd (CP) nanoclusters on the ordered mesoporous TiO2 (CPT) by a pore confinement effect. The resultant CPT exhibited an extraordinary photocatalytic activity during Stille reaction under visible light. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra, the field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) images, and the aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) images demonstrated that CP nanoclusters were anchored in the mesoporous pore wall of TiO2, and the atomic ratio as well as densities of CP could be precisely modulated via the coordination configuration. As the atomic ratio of CP to TiO2 increased to a certain extent, their photocatalytic activity during Stille reaction increased. A mechanistic investigation suggested that the CP alloy could absorb visible light and its conduction electrons gained energy, which were available at the surface Pd sites. This allowed the Pd sites to become electron-rich and to accelerate the rate-determining step of the Stille reaction. As a result, the efficiency of the photocatalytic Stille coupling reaction was extraordinary enhanced.

Due to the unique structural and mechanical properties, graphene quantum dots (GQDs) are considered as potential candidates in the field of biosensors, bioimaging, and drug delivery etc. In this work, the adsorption of protein villin headpiece (HP35) on GQDs with different sizes was investigated by molecular dynamics simulations. The simulation results identified the key role of the π-π stacking interactions between the aromatic residues of HP35 and GQDs as the binding site. More importantly, with the increase of GQD size, the amount and binding strength of adsorbed residues increase, and sequentially enhance the structure change of adsorbed protein, verified by various analysis of protein structures etc. These findings may improve the understanding of the cytotoxicity and biosafety of GQDs, and hence promote the design and application of GQDs-based biomedical devices.

A novel N -substituted aniline, N -(4-sulfonicbutyryl)aniline was synthesized and subsequently to be electropolymerized to yield a new conductive polymer, poly( N -(4-sulfonicbutyryl)aniline). X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS) of the polymer film was examined to propose the polymer molecular structure. The sulfonated polyaniline was also characterized by 1 H NMR, TGA, DTA, FTIR, and UV–vis spectra. The sulfonated polyaniline showed high conductivity in neutral aqueous solutions, which is two orders of magnitude higher than that of poly( N -acetylaniline) (PNAANI).

Pueraria lobata hairy roots have faster elongationand more branches than normal roots. The responses of hairy roots and normalroots to treatment with three auxins, indole-3-acetic acid (IAA),indole-3-butyric acid (IBA), and naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) were different.In normal roots, all three auxins strongly stimulated lateral root formation atall tested concentrations. Responses to IAA and IBA in primary root growth andlateral root elongation were similar and depended on concentration; promotionat0.1 μM, no effect at 1.0 μM, and inhibition at2.5 μM. In hairy roots, lateral root formation varied inresponseto the different auxins, i.e. depressed by NAA, unaffected by IAA, and promotedby IBA. Primary root growth was slightly inhibited by IBA and was unaffected byIAA. However, mean lateral root length was reduced in response to IAA and IBA.Only NAA exerted strong inhibition on primary and lateral root elongation inboth root types. The similar free IAA and conjugated IAA content but quitedifferent basal ethylene production and biosynthesis in hairy and normal rootssuggested different mechanisms of response to exogenous auxins in the two roottypes.

The role of fixation mechanisms of wood preservatives with various wood components in relation to biodeterioration processes is reviewed. This includes studies on the effect of fixation mechanisms of borates, quaternary ammonium compounds, chromated copper arsenate and other copper-based preservatives on distribution patterns and performance. The influence of these factors on the development of alternative preservatives is also addressed in the light of test methodologies and approval processes.

The role of three common fungal isolates from the heartwood of mature coastal western red cedar (Thujaplicata Donn) in the detoxification of thujaplicins was investigated. A Sporothrix species, Kirschsteiniellathujina (Peck) Pomerleau & Etheridge, and a Phialophora species are shown to form a succession of fungi, in that order, which invade red cedar heartwood from within and cause discolouration of the heartwood from light straw to red and various shades of brown. Thujin, a recently described lactone compound in red cedar heartwood extractives, is shown to be present in discoloured wood only. It is formed by the oxidative dimerization and isomerization of thujaplicins by the Sporothrix isolate. The other two fungi may play a minor role in thujaplicin degradation. Thujin is shown to lack toxicity to Poriarivulosa (B. & C.) Cooke, the common decay fungus of coastal western red cedar.

The chemical structure of a novel lactone isolated from the discolored heartwood of living western red cedar (WRC) (Thuja plicata Donn.) trees has been determined as 3,3,4,7,7,8-hexamethyl-2,6-dioxa-1,5-anthracene-dione, and given the trivial name thujin (1). The isolation, purification, and determination of the structure were carried out by a combination of chemical, chromatographic, and spectroscopic methods.
