1. First Results from the German Cal/Val Activities for Aeolus

Abstract

On 22nd August 2018, the European Space Agency (ESA) launched the first direct detection Doppler wind lidar into space. Operating at 355 nm and acquiring signals with a dual channel receiver, it allows wind observations in clear air and particle-laden regions of the atmosphere. Furthermore, particle optical properties can be obtained using the High Spectral Resolution Technique Lidar (HSRL) technique. Measuring with 87 km horizontal and 0.25-2 km vertical resolution between ground and up to 30 km in the stratosphere, the global coverage of Aeolus observations shall fill gaps in the global observing system and thus help improving numerical weather prediction. Within this contribution, first results from the German initiative for experimental Aeolus validation are presented and discussed. Ground-based wind and aerosol measurements from tropospheric radar wind profilers, Doppler wind lidars, radiosondes, aerosol lidars and cloud radars are utilized for that purpose.

Abstract

Lidar standards are needed to ensure quality and lidar product control at the interface between lidar manufacturers and lidar users. Meanwhile three lidar standards have been published by German and international standardization organizations. This paper describes the cooperation between the lidar technique inventors, lidar instrument constructors, and lidar product users to establish useful standards. Presently a backscatter lidar standard is elaborated in Germany. Key points of this standard are presented here. Two German standards were already accepted as international standards by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Hence, German and international organizations for the establishment of lidar standards are introduced to encourage a cooperative work on lidar standards by lidar scientists.

Abstract

Numerical weather prediction models operate on grid spacings of a few kilometers, where deep convection begins to become resolvable. Around this scale, the emergence of coherent structures in the planetary boundary layer, often hypothesized to be caused by cold pools, forces the transition from shallow to deep convection. Yet, the kilometer-scale range is typically not resolved by standard surface operational measurement networks. The measurement campaign FESSTVaL aimed at addressing this gap by observing atmospheric variability at the hectometer to kilometer scale, with a particular emphasis on cold pools, wind gusts and coherent patterns in the planetary boundary layer during summer. A unique feature was the distribution of 150 self-developed and low-cost instruments. More specifically, FESSTVaL included dense networks of 80 autonomous cold pool loggers, 19 weather stations and 83 soil sensor systems, all installed in a rural region of 15-km radius in eastern Germany, as well as self-developed weather stations handed out to citizens. Boundary layer and upper air observations were provided by 8 Doppler lidars and 4 microwave radiometers distributed at 3 supersites; water vapor and temperature were also measured by advanced lidar systems and an infrared spectrometer; and rain was observed by a X-band radar. An uncrewed aircraft, multicopters and a small radiometer network carried out additional measurements during a four-week period. In this paper, we present FESSTVaL’s measurement strategy and show first observational results including unprecedented highly-resolved spatio-temporal cold-pool structures, both in the horizontal as well as in the vertical dimension, associated with overpassing convective systems.

Abstract

Die zentrale Zielsetzung der Studie besteht darin, Themengebiete zu untersuchen, zu denen bislang kaum Forschungsergebnisse vorliegen. 1. Arbeitszufriedenheit und berufliche Ziele; 2. Nutzung und Akzeptanz von Hilfsmitteln; 3. Mobilität und körperliche Verfassung; 4. Lebenszufriedenheit und Zukunftsperspektiven; 5. Berufliche und soziale Situation kleinwüchsiger Menschen in den Neuen Bundesländern nach der Wende. Ausgehend von dieser Zielsetzung wurden mit der Konkretisierung der Fragestellungen auch Hypothesen entwickelt, deren entscheidendes Merkmal in ihrer Vorläufigkeit und Offenheit zu sehen ist. Sie beinhalteten erste Annahmen über potentielle Bedingungszusammenhänge, keinesfalls aber vorab definierte Kausalzusammenhänge in spezifischer Richtung. Zugleich dokumentierten die Hypothesen das Vorverständnis über den untersuchten Gegenstandsbereich. Bezogen auf die Probleme der Betroffenen wurde vermutet, dass sich zwar typische Belastungen auffinden lassen, die jedoch nicht als in jedem Fall wirksam werdende Einflüsse auf den Umgang mit der Größe anzusehen sind. Entscheidende Bedeutung wurde der individuellen Wahrnehmung und Bewertung der jeweiligen Einschränkung beigemessen.
