3. Increased Physical Education at School Improves the Visual-Spatial Cognition during Adolescence

Abstract

The main goal of this study was to investigate the influence of an established school programme with a high amount of physical education on visual-spatial ability in a secondary school. One hundred and forty-four adolescents, 69 from sport classes and 75 from regular classes, solved a cognitive processing speed task and a mental rotation task. The results reflect a better cognitive processing speed of the boys in the sports classes compared to regular classes but no differences for girls. Concerning the mental rotation performance, we found a significantly better mental rotation performance for boys and girls in the sports classes compared to regular classes due to an increased number of items worked on. Supposedly, motor expertise facilitates mental rotation performance by promoting a faster editing of the task. The benefits of sport classes in normal high school settings have to be investigated in further studies considering the effect on academic performance.

Abstract

The human service context is a complex space for social workers and service users, bringing both challenges and opportunities. The ability to navigate challenges is essential for social workers to appropriately support clients and maintain longevity in human service work. Practitioners are expected to possess resilience to mitigate these challenges. Social workers are familiar with the concept of resilience in relation to work with clients. However, it is important they develop their own resilience to withstand industry pressure and build professional identity resilience (PIR). In this article, we drew on an Australian grounded theory PhD study that explored the experience of professional identity development (PID) for newly graduated social workers, specifically the challenges they faced in relation to PID and the link between professional identity and resilience. PIR emerged as a key concept in the process of forming a social work professional identity and seven protective factors were identified that support the development of PIR. IMPLICATIONS Developing professional identity resilience can assist students and graduates to counter challenging experiences of being a social worker. Professional identity resilience plays an important role in the development and ongoing maintenance of professional identity and as such is essential knowledge for social work educators, professional associations, social work students and graduates. 17. The perspectives of carers on housing needs and mental illness: a Loddon Mallee Mental Health Carers Network housing project

Abstract

This study used a mixed methods approach to investigate the housing and support needs of people with mental health issues in the Loddon Mallee region. It was initiated by Bendigo Health Carer Support Services in consultation with Loddon Mallee Mental Health Carers Network and used a survey and interviews for data collection. Taken together, these tools provide a clear picture of some of the challenges faced by carers and those for whom they care in both the short and longer term. There is ample evidence that carers recognise the accommodation and support needs of people with mental illness to be entwined in complex ways that encompass the nature of housing and financial capacity, access and location to supports, and planning for future needs. While much of the evidence found in this study echoes that of previous research investigations, the rural and regional context adds complexity to this picture because of the distances and costs involved in accessing services, and the limited availability of private and public housing options. The particular concerns of participants in this study related to accessing affordable, safe and appropriate housing in a timely manner. Housing was both a short-term and long-term concern for carers who wanted the security of a holistic planning process that gave clarity and security of tenure to people with mental illness.

23. The Influence of Juggling on Mental Rotation Performance in Children with Spina Bifida

Abstract

This study examined the influence of juggling training on mental rotation ability in children with spina bifida. Children between the ages of 8 and 12 solved a chronometric mental rotation test. Half of the children received juggling training (EG) over an 8 week time period; the other half did not receive training (CG). Afterwards, all participants completed the mental rotation test again. Children of the EG showed a significant decrease in reaction time and an increase in mental rotation speed compared to the control group. This indicates that juggling improves the rotation in the mental rotation process in children with spina bifida. (Contains 1 table and 4 figures.)

Abstract

Parenthood is a significant life transition with considerable impacts on parent, child and family wellbeing. While life-enhancing, it is also stressful. New parents' often hold unrealistic expectations and do not prepare adequately for the new role. Applying a critical exploratory Grounded Theory approach, this study explores the reasons for expectant parents' unrealistic expectations. Thirty parents were interviewed about their preconceptions of parenthood, how they impacted on early parenting experiences and what, if anything, might help better prepare parents for this role. Participants reported unrealistic expectations, a lack of preparation, and recommended that parenting information be provided by professionals prenatally to help prevent adverse effects. In addition, we advocate promoting critical thinking to help parents identify and grapple with facets of social life that support and impede the way they experience and cope with parenthood, leading to the capacity to challenge cultural pressures that may make parenting even more difficult.
