This is an index of the contributions by the Giant Radio Array for Neutrino Detection (GRAND) Collaboration to the 10th International Workshop on Acoustic and Radio EeV Neutrino Detection Activities (ARENA 2024, University of Chicago, June 11-14, 2024). The operation of upcoming ultra-high-energy cosmic-ray, gamma-ray, and neutrino radio-detection experiments, like the Giant Radio Array for Neutrino Detection (GRAND), poses significant computational challenges involving the production of numerous simulations of particle showers and their detection, and a high data throughput. GRANDlib is an open-source software tool designed to meet these challenges. Its primary goal is to perform end-to-end simulations of the detector operation, from the interaction of ultra-high-energy particles, through -- by interfacing with external air-shower simulations -- the ensuing particle shower development and its radio emission, to its detection by antenna arrays and its processing by data-acquisition systems. Additionally, GRANDlib manages the visualization, storage, and retrieval of experimental and simulated data. The Giant Radio Array for Neutrino Detection (GRAND) is an envisioned observatory of ultra-high-energy particles of cosmic origin, with energies in excess of 100 PeV. GRAND uses large surface arrays of autonomous radio-detection units to look for the radio emission from extensive air showers that are triggered by the interaction of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays, gamma rays, and neutrinos in the atmosphere or underground. In particular, for ultra-high-energy neutrinos, the future final phase of GRAND aims to be sensitive enough to discover them in spite of their plausibly tiny flux. Presently, three prototype GRAND radio arrays are in operation: GRANDProto300, in China, GRAND@Auger, in Argentina, and GRAND@Nancay, in France. Their goals are to field-test the design of the radio-detection units, understand the radio background to which they are exposed, and develop tools for diagnostic, data gathering, and data analysis. Let $H$ be a division ring of finite dimension over its center, let $H[T]$ be the ring of polynomials in a central variable over $H$, and let $H(T)$ be its quotient skew field. We show that every intermediate division ring between $H$ and $H(T)$ is itself of the form $H(f)$, for some $f$ in the center of $H(T)$. This generalizes the classical L\"uroth's theorem. More generally, we extend Igusa's theorem characterizing the transcendence degree 1 subfields of rational function fields, from fields to division rings.

Recently, several works by a number of authors have provided characterizations of integral undirected Cayley graphs over generalized dihedral groups and generalized dicyclic groups. We generalize and unify these results in two different ways. Firstly, we work over arbitrary non-abelian finite groups admitting an abelian subgroup of index 2. Secondly, our main result actually characterizes integral mixed Cayley graphs over such finite groups, in the spirit of a very recent result of Kadyan--Bhattarcharjya in the abelian case., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2202.11398

Recently, several works by a number of authors have studied integrality, distance integrality, and distance powers of Cayley graphs over some finite groups, such as dicyclic groups and (generalized) dihedral groups. Our aim is to generalize and/or to give analogues of these results for generalized dicyclic groups. For example, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for a Cayley graph over a generalized dicyclic group to be integral (i.e., all eigenvalues of its adjacency matrix are in $\mathbb{Z}$). We also obtain sufficient conditions for the integrality of all distance powers of a Cayley graph over a given generalized dicyclic group. These results extend works on dicyclic groups by Cheng--Feng--Huang and Cheng--Feng--Liu--Lu--Stevanovic, respectively.

Given a Hilbertian field $k$ and a finite set $\mathcal{S}$ of Krull valuations of $k$, we show that every finite split embedding problem $G \rightarrow {\rm{Gal}}(L/k)$ over $k$ with abelian kernel has a solu\-tion ${\rm{Gal}}(F/k) \rightarrow G$ such that every $v \in \mathcal{S}$ is totally split in $F/L$. Two applications are then given. Firstly, we solve a non-constant variant of the Beckmann--Black problem for solvable groups: given a field $k$ and a non-trivial finite solvable group $G$, every Galois field extension $F/k$ of group $G$ is shown to occur as the specialization at some $t_0 \in k$ of some Galois field extension $E/k(T)$ of group $G$ with $E \not \subseteq \overline{k}(T)$. Secondly, we contribute to inverse Galois theory over division rings, by showing that, for every division ring $H$ and every automorphism $\sigma$ of $H$ of finite order, all finite semiabelian groups occur as Galois groups over the skew field of fractions $H(T, \sigma)$ of the twisted polynomial ring $H[T, \sigma]$.

Given a field $k$ and a finite group $G$, the Beckmann--Black problem asks whether every Galois field extension $F/k$ with group $G$ is the specialization at some $t_0 \in k$ of some Galois field extension $E/k(T)$ with group $G$ and $E \cap \overline{k} = k$. We show that the answer is positive for arbitrary $k$ and $G$, if one waives the requirement that $E/k(T)$ is normal. In fact, our result holds if ${\rm{Gal}}(F/k)$ is any given subgroup $H$ of $G$ and, in the special case $H=G$, we provide a similar conclusion even if $F/k$ is not normal. We next derive that, given a division ring $H$ and an automorphism $\sigma$ of $H$ of finite order, all finite groups occur as automorphism groups over the skew field of fractions $H(T, \sigma)$ of the twisted polynomial ring $H[T, \sigma]$.

Given fields $k \subseteq L$, our results concern one parameter $L$-parametric polynomials over $k$, and their relation to generic polynomials. The former are polynomials $P(T,Y) \in k[T][Y]$ of group $G$ which parametrize all Galois extensions of $L$ of group $G$ via specialization of $T$ in $L$, and the latter are those which are $L$-parametric for every field $L \supseteq k$. We show, for example, that being $L$-parametric with $L$ taken to be the single field $\mathbb{C}((V))(U)$ is in fact sufficient for a polynomial $P(T, Y) \in \mathbb{C}[T][Y]$ to be generic. As a corollary, we obtain a complete list of one parameter generic polynomials over a given field of characteristic 0, complementing the classical literature on the topic. Our approach also applies to an old problem of Schinzel: subject to the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture, we provide one parameter families of affine curves over number fields, all with a rational point, but with no rational generic point.

We report on experimental and numerical implementations of devices based on the negative refraction of elastic guided waves, the so-called Lamb waves. Consisting in plates of varying thickness, these devices rely on the concept of complementary media, where a particular layout of negative index media can cloak an object with its anti-object or trap waves around a negative corner. The diffraction cancellation operated by negative refraction is investigated by means of laser ultrasound experiments. However, unlike original theoretical predictions, these intriguing wave phenomena remain, nevertheless, limited to the propagating component of the wave-field. To go beyond the diffraction limit, negative refraction is combined with the concept of metalens, a device converting the evanescent components of an object into propagating waves. The transport of an evanescent wave-field is then possible from an object plane to a far-field imaging plane. Twenty years after Pendry's initial proposal, this work thus paves the way towards an elastic superlens., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures

The first aim of this note is to fill a gap in the literature by proving that, given a global field $K$ and a finite set $\mathcal{S}$ of primes of $K$, every finite split embedding problem $G \rightarrow {\rm{Gal}}(L/K)$ over $K$ with nilpotent kernel has a solution ${\rm{Gal}}(F/K) \rightarrow G$ such that all primes in $\mathcal{S}$ are totally split in $F/L$. We then apply this to inverse Galois theory over division rings. Firstly, given a number field $K$ of level at least $4$, we show that every finite solvable group occurs as a Galois group over the division ring $H_K$ of quaternions with coefficients in $K$. Secondly, given a finite split embedding problem with nilpotent kernel over a finite field $K$, we fully describe for which automorphisms $\sigma$ of $K$ the embedding problem acquires a solution over the skew field of fractions $K(T, \sigma)$ of the twisted polynomial ring $K[T, \sigma]$.

We extend finite embedding problems over fields, a central notion in inverse Galois theory, to the situation of a skew field $H$ of finite dimension over its center $h$. First, we show that solving a finite embedding problem over $H$ is equivalent to finding a solution to some finite embedding problem over $h$ fulfilling a polynomial constraint. Next, we show that every constant finite split embedding problem over the skew field of fractions $H(t)$ with central indeterminate $t$ has a solution, if $h$ is an ample field. This is a non-commutative analogue of a deep result of Pop. More generally, we solve such finite embedding problems over the skew field of fractions $H(t, \sigma)$ of the twisted polynomial ring $H[t, \sigma]$, for some automorphisms $\sigma$ of $H$ of finite order. We introduce Galois families of modular forms. They are a new kind of family coming from Galois representations of the absolute Galois groups of rational function fields over the rational field. We exhibit some examples and provide an infinite Galois family of non-liftable weight one Katz modular eigenforms over an algebraic closure of F_p for p in {3,5,7,11}., Comment: 23 pages; v4: minor changes

We provide evidence for this conclusion: given a finite Galois cover $f: X \rightarrow \mathbb{P}^1_\mathbb{Q}$ of group $G$, almost all (in a density sense) realizations of $G$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ do not occur as specializations of $f$. We show that this holds if the number of branch points of $f$ is sufficiently large, under the abc-conjecture and, possibly, the lower bound predicted by the Malle conjecture for the number of Galois extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$ of given group and bounded discriminant. This widely extends a result of Granville on the lack of $\mathbb{Q}$-rational points on quadratic twists of hyperelliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ with large genus, under the abc-conjecture (a diophantine reformulation of the case $G=\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$ of our result). As a further evidence, we exhibit a few finite groups $G$ for which the above conclusion holds unconditionally for almost all covers of $\mathbb{P}^1_\mathbb{Q}$ of group $G$. We also introduce a local-global principle for specializations of Galois covers $f: X \rightarrow \mathbb{P}^1_\mathbb{Q}$ and show that it often fails if $f$ has abelian Galois group and sufficiently many branch points, under the abc-conjecture. On the one hand, such a local-global conclusion underscores the "smallness" of the specialization set of a Galois cover of $\mathbb{P}^1_\mathbb{Q}$. On the other hand, it allows to generate conditionally "many" curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ failing the Hasse principle, thus generalizing a recent result of Clark and Watson devoted to the hyperelliptic case., Comment: 37 pages

In this article, we show that the Inverse Galois Problem over a skew field $H$ of finite dimension over its center $k$ is equivalent to a variant of the Inverse Galois Problem over $k$ involving a polynomial constraint. As an application, we show that if $k$ contains an ample field, then the Inverse Galois Problem has a positive answer over the skew field $H(t)$ of rational fractions with central indeterminate., Comment: in French

A central conjecture in inverse Galois theory, proposed by D\`{e}bes and Deschamps, asserts that every finite split embedding problem over an arbitrary field can be regularly solved. We give an unconditional proof of a consequence of this conjecture, namely that such embedding problems can be regularly solved if one waives the requirement that the solution fields are normal. This extends previous results of M. Fried, Takahashi, Deschamps, and the last two authors concerning the realization of finite groups as automorphism groups of field extensions.

This paper provides a theoretical investigation of negative refraction and focusing of elastic guided waves in a free-standing plate with a step-like thickness change. Under certain conditions, a positive phase velocity (forward) Lamb mode can be converted into a negative phase velocity (backward) mode at such interface, giving rise to negative refraction. A semi-analytical model is developed in order to study the influence of various parameters such as the material Poisson's coefficient, the step-like thickness, the frequency and the incidence angle. To this end, all the Lamb and shear horizontal propagating modes, but also a large number of their inhomogeneous and evanescent counterpart,s are taken into account. The boundary conditions applied to the stress-displacement fields at the thickness step yields an equation system. Its inversion provides the transmission and reflection coefficients between each mode at the interface. The step-like thickness and Poisson's ratio are shown to be key parameters to optimize the negative refraction process. In terms of material, Duralumin is found to be optimal as it leads to a nearly perfect conversion between forward and backward modes over broad frequency and angular ranges. An excellent focusing ability is thus predicted for a flat lens made of two symmetric thickness steps. Theoretical results are confirmed by a numerical FDTD simulation and experimental measurements made on an optimized Duralumin flat lens by means of laser interferometry. This theoretical study paves the way towards the optimization of elastic devices based on negative refraction, in particular for cloaking or super-focusing purposes., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

The finite subgroups of ${\rm PGL}_2(\mathbb{C})$ are shown to be the only finite groups $G$ with this property: for some integer $r_0$ (depending on $G$), all Galois covers $X\rightarrow \mathbb{P}^1_{\mathbb{C}}$ of group $G$ can be obtained by pulling back those with at most $r_0$ branch points along non-constant rational maps $\mathbb{P}^1_{\mathbb{C}} \rightarrow \mathbb{P}^1_{\mathbb{C}}$. For $G\subset {\rm PGL}_2(\mathbb{C})$, it is in fact enough to pull back one well-chosen cover with at most $3$ branch points. A consequence of the converse for inverse Galois theory is that, for $G\not \subset {\rm PGL}_2({\mathbb{C}})$, letting the branch point number grow provides truly new Galois realizations $F/{\mathbb{C}}(T)$ of $G$. Another application is that the ``Beckmann--Black'' property that ``any two Galois covers of $\mathbb{P}^1_{\mathbb{C}}$ with the same group $G$ are always pullbacks of another Galois cover of group $G$'' only holds if $G\subset {\rm PGL}_2({\mathbb{C}})$.

This paper deals with the Weak Inverse Galois Problem which, for a given field $k$, states that, for every finite group $G$, there exists a finite separable extension $L/k$ such that ${\rm{Aut}}(L/k)=G$. One of its goals is to explain how one can generically produce families of fields which fulfill this problem, but which do not fulfill the usual Inverse Galois Problem. We show that this holds for, e.g., the fields $\mathbb{Q}^{{{\rm{sol}}}}$, $\mathbb{Q}^{{{\rm{tr}}}}$, $\mathbb{Q}^{{{\rm{pyth}}}}$, and for the maximal pro-$p$-extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$. Moreover, we show that, for every finite non-trivial group $G$, there exists many fields fulfilling the Weak Inverse Galois Problem, but over which $G$ does not occur as a Galois group. As a further application, we show that every field fulfills the regular version of the Weak Inverse Galois Problem., Comment: in French

The propagation of waves in complex media can be harnessed either by taming the incident wave-field impinging on the medium or by forcing waves along desired paths through its careful design. These two alternative strategies have given rise to fascinating concepts such as time reversal or negative refraction. Here, we show how these two processes are intimately linked through the negative reflection phenomenon. A negative reflecting mirror converts a wave of positive phase velocity into its negative counterpart and vice versa. In this article, we experimentally demonstrate this phenomenon with elastic waves in a 2D billiard and in a disordered plate by means of laser interferometry. Despite the complexity of such configurations, the negatively reflected wave field focuses back towards the initial source location, thereby mimicking a phase conjugation operation while being a fully passive process. The super-focusing capability of negative reflection is also highlighted in a monochromatic regime. The negative reflection phenomenon is not restricted to guided elastic waves since it can occur in zero-gap systems such as photonic crystals, chiral metamaterials or graphene. Negative reflection can thus become a tool of choice for the control of waves in all fields of wave physics., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

Given a field $k$ of characteristic zero and an indeterminate $T$ over $k$, we investigate the local behaviour at primes of $k$ of finite Galois extensions of $k$ arising as specializations of finite Galois extensions $E/k(T)$ (with $E/k$ regular) at points $t_0 \in \mathbb{P}^1(k)$. We provide a general result about decomposition groups at primes of $k$ in specializations, extending a fundamental result of Beckmann concerning inertia groups. We then apply our result to study crossed products, the Hilbert--Grunwald property, and finite parametric sets., Comment: 27 pages

We show that every finite group occurs as the automorphism group of infinitely many finite (field) extensions of any given Hilbertian field. This extends and unifies previous results of M. Fried and Takahashi on the global field case.

Let $F$ be a number field, $O_F$ the integral closure of $\mathbb{Z}$ in $F$ and $P(T) \in O_F[T]$ a monic separable polynomial such that $P(0) \not=0$ and $P(1) \not=0$. We give precise sufficient conditions on a given positive integer $k$ for the following condition to hold: there exist infinitely many non-zero prime ideals $\mathcal{P}$ of $O_F$ such that the reduction modulo $\mathcal{P}$ of $P(T)$ has a root in the residue field $O_F/\mathcal{P}$, but the reduction modulo $\mathcal{P}$ of $P(T^k)$ has no root in $O_F/\mathcal{P}$. This makes a result from a previous paper (motivated by a problem in field arithmetic) asserting that there exist (infinitely many) such integers $k$ more precise., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1602.06706

Given a number field $k$, we show that, for many finite groups $G$, all the Galois extensions of $k$ with Galois group $G$ cannot be obtained by specializing any given finitely many Galois extensions $E/k(T)$ with Galois group $G$ and $E/k$ regular. Our examples include abelian groups, dihedral groups, symmetric groups, general linear groups over finite fields, etc. We also provide a similar conclusion while specializing any given infinitely many Galois extensions $E/k(T)$ with Galois group $G$ and $E/k$ regular of a certain type, under a conjectural "uniform Faltings" theorem".

Let $n\geq 2$ be an integer, $F$ a number field, $O_F$ the integral closure of $\mathbb{Z}$ in $F$ and $N$ a positive multiple of $n$. The paper deals with degree $N$ polynomials $P(T) \in O_F[T]$ such that the superelliptic curve $Y^n=P(T)$ has twists $Y^n=d\cdot P(T)$ without $F$-rational points. We show that this condition holds if the Galois group of $P(T)$ over $F$ has an element which fixes no root of $P(T)$. Two applications are given. Firstly, we prove that the proportion of degree $N$ polynomials $P(T) \in O_F[T]$ with height bounded by $H$ and such that the associated curve satisfies the desired condition tends to 1 as $H$ tends to $\infty$. Secondly, we connect the problem with the recent notion of non-parametric extensions and give new examples of such extensions with cyclic Galois groups.

Given a number field $F$, a finite group $G$ and an indeterminate $T$, {\it{a $G$-parametric extension over $F$}} is a finite Galois extension $E/F(T)$ with Galois group $G$ and $E/F$ regular that has all the Galois extensions of $F$ with Galois group $G$ among its specializations. We are mainly interested in producing non-$G$-parametric extensions, which relates to classical questions in inverse Galois theory like the Beckmann-Black problem. Building on a strategy developed in previous papers, we show that there exists at least one non-$G$-parametric extension over $F$ for a given non-trivial finite group $G$ and a given number field $F$ under the sole necessary condition that $G$ occurs as the Galois group of a Galois extension $E/F(T)$ with $E/F$ regular.
