Abstract

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been constantly supporting nanosciences and nanotechnologies for over 30 years, being present in many fields from condensed matter physics to biology. It enables measuring very weak forces at the nanoscale, thus elucidating interactions at play in fundamental processes. Here we leverage the combined benefits of micro/nanoelectromechanical systems and cavity optomechanics to fabricate a sensor for dynamic mode AFM at a frequency above 100 MHz. This is two decades above the fastest commercial AFM probes, suggesting opportunity for measuring forces at timescales unexplored so far. The fabrication is achieved using very-large scale integration technologies inherited from photonic silicon circuits. The probe's ring optomechanical cavity is coupled to a 1.55 um laser light and features a 130 MHz mechanical resonance mode with a quality factor of 900 in air. A limit of detection in displacement of 3.10-16 m/sqrt(Hz) is obtained, enabling the detection of the Brownian motion of the probe and paving the way for force sensing experiments in the dynamic mode with a working vibration amplitude in the picometer range. Inserted in a custom AFM instrument embodiment, this optomechanical sensor demonstrates the capacity to perform force-distance measurements and to maintain a constant interaction strength between tip and sample, an essential requirement for AFM applications. Experiments show indeed a stable closed-loop operation with a setpoint of 4 nN/nm for an unprecedented sub-picometer vibration amplitude, where the tip-sample interaction is mediated by a stretched water meniscus.

Abstract

This paper presents results about fabrication and operation of electrostatic actuators in liquids with various permittivities. In the static mode, we provide experimental and theoretical demonstration that the pull-in effect can be shifted beyond one third of the initial gap and even be eliminated when electrostatic actuators are operated in liquids. This should benefit to applications in microfluidics requiring either binary state actuation (e.g. pumps, valves) or continuous displacements over the whole gap (e.g. microtweezers). In dynamic mode, actuators like micro-cantilevers present a great interest for Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) in liquids. As this application requires a good understanding of the cantilever resonance frequency and Q-factor, an analytical modeling in liquid environment has been established. The theoretically derived curves are validated by experimental results using a nitride encapsulated cantilever with integrated electrostatic actuation. Electrode potential screening and undesirable electrochemistry in dielectric liquids are counteracted using AC-voltages. Abstract

National audience; BACKGROUND: Since the previous French guidelines were published in 2017, substantial additional knowledge about idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis has accumulated. METHODS: Under the auspices of the French-speaking Learned Society of Pulmonology and at the initiative of the coordinating reference center, practical guidelines for treatment of rare pulmonary diseases have been established. They were elaborated by groups of writers, reviewers and coordinators with the help of the OrphaLung network, as well as pulmonologists with varying practice modalities, radiologists, pathologists, a general practitioner, a head nurse, and a patients’ association. The method was developed according to rules entitled "Good clinical practice" in the overall framework of the "Guidelines for clinical practice" of the official French health authority (HAS), taking into account the results of an online vote using a Likert scale. RESULTS: After analysis of the literature, 54 recommendations were formulated, improved, and validated by the working groups. The recommendations covered a wide-ranging aspects of the disease and its treatment: epidemiology, diagnostic modalities, quality criteria and interpretation of chest CT, indication and modalities of lung biopsy, etiologic workup, approach to familial disease entailing indications and modalities of genetic testing, evaluation of possible functional impairments and prognosis, indications for and use of antifibrotic therapy, lung transplantation, symptom management, comorbidities and complications, treatment of chronic respiratory failure, diagnosis and management of acute exacerbations of fibrosis. CONCLUSION: These evidence-based guidelines are aimed at guiding the diagnosis and the management in clinical practice of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

Abstract

National audience; Background. - Since the previous French guidelines were published in 2017, substantial additional knowledge about idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis has accumulated. Methods. - Under the auspices of the French-speaking Learned Society of Pulmonology and at the initiative of the coordinating reference center, practical guidelines for treatment of rare pulmonary diseases have been established. They were elaborated by groups of writers, reviewers and coordinators with the help of the OrphaLung network, as well as pulmonologists with varying practice modalities, radiologists, pathologists, a general practitioner, a head nurse, and a patients' association. The method was developed according to rules entitled "Good clinical practice" in the overall framework of the "Guidelines for clinical practice" of the official French health authority (HAS), taking into account the results of an online vote using a Likert scale. Results. - After analysis of the literature, 54 recommendations were formulated, improved, and validated by the working groups. The recommendations covered a wide-ranging aspects of the disease and its treatment: epidemiology, diagnostic modalities, quality criteria and interpretation of chest CT, indication and modalities of lung biopsy, etiologic workup, approach to familial disease entailing indications and modalities of genetic testing, evaluation of possible functional impairments and prognosis, indications for and use of antifibrotic therapy, lung transplantation, symptom management, comorbidities and complications, treatment of chronic respiratory failure, diagnosis and management of acute exacerbations of fibrosis. Conclusion. - These evidence-based guidelines are aimed at guiding the diagnosis and the management in clinical practice of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. (C) 2022 SPLF. Abstract

Nanoscale desorption of the Si(100)-2X1 hydrogen terminated surface was attained by applying a scanning tunneling microscope in an ultrahigh vacuum chamber. The patterned linewidth was investigated as a function of the sample bias and the dose, either with the feedback servo loop on or off. A simple analytical model is presented to elucidate on the variation of the linewidth versus the electron dose.

Abstract

We compare the superficial segregations of the Cu-Ag system for a nanoparticle and for surfaces that are structurally equivalent to each of its facet. Based on a lattice-gas model and within a mean-field formalism, we derive segregation isotherms at various temperatures in the canonical ensemble, i.e., for a given overall solute concentration, and in the semigrand canonical ensemble, i.e., for a given bulk solute concentration. If both processes are very similar for high temperatures, they differ substantially at lower temperatures. Due to the finite-size effect and the indirect coupling between facets and edges, the relative position of the phase transitions of the facets and the corresponding surfaces is inversed when displayed as a function of the solute bulk concentration. Moreover, we show that working in the semigrand canonical ensemble is a much more efficient way to study this phenomenon, although nanoparticles are “canonical” objects in essence. Abstract

We report the self-formation of nanometer-size silicon islands on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrate that is associated with simple thermal treatment in the range of 500–900 °C. We study the island formation process versus the temperature of the thermal annealing, the thickness of the top silicon layer, and the presence of a native oxide on this top layer. The island size distribution is also studied. To follow the chemical evolution of the top layer, we used in situ Auger electron spectroscopy in an ultrahigh vacuum chamber. The island morphology is studied using ex situ atomic force microscopy (AFM). The formation temperature increases with the thickness of the top silicon layer and can be explained by thermal stress induced at the Si/SiO[sub 2] interface. From a technological point of view, this study shows the limitation of a SOI substrate with a thin silicon top layer under thermal treatment. On the other hand, it opens up an easy way in which to build silicon dots on an insulator. Finally, we present preliminary data that show the possibility of charging these nanocrystallites with an AFM tip. © 2002 American Institute of Physics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
