19. Quantifying bed-related suspended load in gravel bed rivers through an analysis of the bedload-suspended load relationship

- Abstract
Suspended load transport can strongly impact ecosystems, dam filling and water resources. However, contrary to bedload, the use of physically based predicting equations is very challenging because of the complexity of interactions between suspended load and the river system. Through the analysis of extensive data sets, we investigated extent to which one or several river bed or flow parameters could be used as a proxy for quantifying suspended fluxes in gravel bed rivers. For this purpose, we gathered in the literature nearly 2400 instantaneous field measurements collected in 56 gravel bed rivers. Among all standard dimensionless parameters tested, the strongest correlation was observed between the suspended sediment concentration and the dimensionless bedload rate. An empirical relation between these two parameters was calibrated. Used with a reach average bedload transport formula, the approach allowed to successfully reproduce suspended fluxes measured during major flood events in seven gravel bed alpine rivers, morphodynamically active and distant from hillslope sources. These results are discussed in light of the complexity of the processes potentially influencing suspended load in a mountainous context. The approach proposed in this paper will never replace direct field measurements, which can be considered the only confident method to assess sediment fluxes in alpine streams; however, it can increment existing panel tools that help river managers to estimate even rough but not unrealistic suspended fluxes when measurements are totally absent.

The French critical zone initiative, called OZCAR (Observatoires de la Zone Critique–Application et Recherche or Critical Zone Observatories–Application and Research) is a National Research Infrastructure (RI). OZCAR-RI is a network of instrumented sites, bringing together 21 pre-existing research observatories monitoring different compartments of the zone situated between “the rock and the sky,” the Earth’s skin or critical zone (CZ), over the long term. These observatories are regionally based and have specific initial scientific questions, monitoring strategies, databases, and modeling activities. The diversity of OZCAR-RI observatories and sites is well representative of the heterogeneity of the CZ and of the scientific communities studying it. Despite this diversity, all OZCAR-RI sites share a main overarching mandate, which is to monitor, understand, and predict (“earthcast”) the fluxes of water and matter of the Earth’s near surface and how they will change in response to the “new climatic regime.” The vision for OZCAR strategic development aims at designing an open infrastructure, building a national CZ community able to share a systemic representation of the CZ , and educating a new generation of scientists more apt to tackle the wicked problem of the Anthropocene. OZCAR articulates around: (i) a set of common scientific questions and cross-cutting scientific activities using the wealth of OZCAR-RI observatories, (ii) an ambitious instrumental development program, and (iii) a better interaction between data and models to integrate the different time and spatial scales. Internationally, OZCAR-RI aims at strengthening the CZ community by providing a model of organization for pre-existing observatories and by offering CZ instrumented sites. OZCAR is one of two French mirrors of the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructure (eLTER-ESFRI) project.

International audience; The Cévennes-Vivarais region in southern France is prone to heavy rainfall that can lead to flash floods which are one of the most hazardous natural risks in Europe. The results of numerous studies show that besides rainfall and physical catchment characteristics the catchment's initial soil moisture also impacts the hydrological response to rain events. The aim of this paper is to analyze the relationship between catchment mean initial soil moisture e-ini and the hydrological response that is quantified using the eventbased runoff coefficient ev in the two nested catchments of the Gazel (3.4 km2) and the Claduègne (43 km2). Thus, the objectives are twofold: (1) obtaining meaningful estimates of soil moisture at catchment scale from a dense network of in situ measurements and (2) using this estimate of e-inito analyze its relation with ev calculated for many runoff events. A sampling setup including 45 permanently installed frequency domain reflectancy probes that continuously measure soil moisture at three depths is applied. Additionally, onalert surface measurements at 10 locations in each one of11 plots are conducted. Thus, catchment mean soil moisturecan be confidently assessed with a standard error of the meanof 1:7 vol% over a wide range of soil moisture conditions.The ev is calculated from high-resolution discharge andprecipitation data for several rain events with a cumulativeprecipitation Pcum ranging from less than 5mm to more than80 mm. Because of the high uncertainty of ev associated with the hydrograph separation method, ev is calculated with several methods, including graphical methods, digital filters and a tracer-based method. The results indicate that the hydrological response depends one ini: during dry conditions ev is consistently below 0.1, even for events with high and intense precipitation. Above a threshold of e ini D 34 vol% ev can reach values up to 0.99 but there is a high scatter. Some variability can be explained with a weak correlation of ev with Pcum and rain intensity, but a considerable part of the variability remains unexplained. It is concluded that threshold-based methods can be helpful to prevent overestimation of the hydrological response during dry catchment conditions. The impact of soil moisture on the hydrological response during wet catchment conditions, however, is still insufficiently understood and cannot be generalized based on the present results.

International audience; Cohesive sediment dynamics in mountainous rivers is poorly understood even though these rivers are the main providers of fine particles to the oceans. Complex interactions exist between the coarse matrix of cobble bed rivers and fine sediments. Given that fine sediment load in such environments can be very high due to intense natural rainfall or snowmelt events and to man-induced reservoir or dam flushing, a better understanding of the deposition and sedimentation processes is needed in order to reduce ecohydrological downstream impacts. We tested a field-based approach on the Arc and Isere alpine rivers combining measurements of erosion and settling properties of river bed deposits before and after a dam flushing, with the U-GEMS (Gust Erosion Microcosm System) and SCAF (System Characterizing Aggregates and Flocs), respectively. These measurements highlight that critical shears, rates of erosion, settling velocities and propensity of particles to flocculate are highly variable in time and space. This is reflective of the heterogeneity of the hydrodynamic conditions during particle settling, local bed roughness, and nature and size of particles. Generally the deposits were found to be stable relative to what is measured in lowland rivers. It was, however, not possible to make a conclusive assessment of the extent to which the dynamics of deposits after reservoir flushing were different from those settled after natural events. The absence of any relationships between erosion and deposition variables, making it impossible to predict one from another, underlined the need to measure all of them to have a full assessment of the fine sediment dynamics and to obtain representative input variables for numerical models. While the SCAF was found to be effective, an alternative to the U-GEMS device will have to be found for the erodibility assessment in cobble bed rivers, in order to make more rapid measurements at higher shears.

International audience; Mediterranean regions are prone to intense rainfall events that can lead to devastating flash floods, sometimes associated with high sediment transport. They generally occur in small catchments (less than 20 km2) that are generally ungauged. During these events, rainfall is also very variable both in time and in space and high resolution rainfall fields are necessary to understand the corresponding hydro-sedimentary response. We present a dedicated observation strategy set up in the 116 km2, Auzon catchment (Ardèche, France, OHMCV observatory) that led to the collection of a high space time resolution of rainfall, discharge and suspended sediment data set (Nord et al., ESSD, 2017). Rainfall field estimates combine rain gauges and radar data. Flooding discharges are obtained using standard discharge gauging stations and non-contact measurements: opportunistic flood gaugings using Surface Velocimetry Radar (SVR), LS-PIV (Large scale particle image velocimetry) in fixed stations or based on videos from You Tube. Discharge and suspended sediment are monitored on nested scales ranging from the plot scale to the medium-size catchment scale, allowing relating observed fluxes and diffuse sources of sediments. All these data sets provide information about flash floods space-time characteristics and associated processes that are of interest for a better management of this kind of events and for understanding associated human behavior and damages to properties. Monitoring of suspended sediments is also necessary to study the transport of nutriments and contaminants.

Badlands are present in the Auzon catchment and well connected to high-gradient channels of bedrock rivers which promotes the transfer of suspended solids downstream. The number of observed variables, the various sensors involved (both in situ and remote) and the space-time resolution (∼ km 2 , ∼ min) of this comprehensive dataset make it a unique contribution to research communities focused on hydrom-eteorology, surface hydrology and erosion. Given that rainfall is highly variable in space and time in this region, the observation system enables assessment of the hydrological response to rainfall fields. Indeed, (i) rainfall data are provided by rain gauges (both a research network of 21 rain gauges with a 5 min time step and an operational network of 10 rain gauges with a 5 min or 1 h time step), S-band Doppler dual-polarization radars (1 km 2 , 5 min resolution), disdrometers (16 sensors working at 30 s or 1 min time step) and Micro Rain Radars (5 sensors, 100 m height resolution). Additionally, during the special observation period (SOP-1) of the HyMeX (Hydrolog-ical Cycle in the Mediterranean Experiment) project, two X-band radars provided precipitation measurements at Published by Copernicus Publications. 222 G. (ii) Other meteorological data are taken from the operational surface weather observation stations of Météo-France (including 2 m air temperature, atmospheric pressure, 2 m relative humidity, 10 m wind speed and direction, global radiation) at the hourly time resolution (six stations in the region of interest). (iii) The monitoring of surface hydrology and suspended sediment is multi-scale and based on nested catchments. Three hydrometric stations estimate water discharge at a 2-10 min time resolution. Two of these stations also measure additional physico-chemical variables (turbidity, temperature, conductivity) and water samples are collected automatically during floods, allowing further geochemical characterization of water and suspended solids. Two experimental plots monitor overland flow and erosion at 1 min time resolution on a hillslope with vineyard. A network of 11 sensors installed in the intermittent hydrographic network continuously measures water level and water temperature in headwater subcatchments (from 0.17 to 116 km 2) at a time resolution of 2-5 min. A network of soil moisture sensors enables the continuous measurement of soil vol-umetric water content at 20 min time resolution at 9 sites. Additionally, concomitant observations (soil moisture measurements and stream gauging) were performed during floods between 2012 and 2014. Finally, this dataset is considered appropriate for understanding the rainfall variability in time and space at fine scales, improving areal rainfall estimations and progressing in distributed hydrological and erosion modelling.

Three different methods to analyse fine sediment deposits on a gravel bar using pictures are presented in this paper. A manual digitization and deposits zone delineation are performed as well as two different automated procedures. The three methods are applied on aerial pictures taken in 2006 by a drone from a height around 150 m above the study site. Two other sets of pictures taken in 2010 are also studied: the first set was obtained from the left side bank of the river at approximately 15m above the gravel bar whereas the second one was taken from a helicopter flying 600∼m above the ground. These methods were used to estimate the surface of fine sediment deposits before and after flushing events. They yield similar results even if the first automated procedure is able to capture smaller patches of fine sediments. The total surface of fine sediment deposits seems to be similar before and after a flushing event, but the distribution appears quite different. Before a flushing event, a significant amount of fine sediment deposits are mixed with coarser sediments. After the flushing event, one can observe more large fine sediment deposits located on the downstream part of the secondary channel and at the channel margin. Most of the small fine sediment deposit patches were washed out. A short discussion is provided on the possible dynamics of fine sediment deposits over the gravel bar.

International audience; An excess supply of fine sediment to rivers leads to numerous environmental problems, such as an increase in water turbidity and a rapid filling of reservoirs. Fine sediment is also an important conveyor of contaminants and nutrients. Spatial and temporal dynamics of sediment transfer need to be better understood to implement efficient control measures. We determined the spatial origin of sediment between 2007 and 2009 in two mountainous river catchments (600-1000 km 2) by combining river flow records and geochemical / radionuclide concentrations as potential input properties to a Monte Carlo mixing model. Results on the main sources of sediment have important management implications in both catchments. In Mexico, we showed a variable sediment supply by historical gully networks and cropland during the rainy season. In the French Alps, we showed that the contribution of black marls that locally produce severe erosion was not systematically dominant at the entire catchment scale. Furthermore, we measured the transfer times of sediment in rivers using a radionuclide two-box balance model and the Be-7/excess-Pb-210 ratio. In Mexico, we outlined the major role played by the flood type on sediment remobilisation and export. In the French Alps, 80% of sediment were exported by low-intensity widespread rainfall and were mainly composed of "old" material that deposited on the riverbed during previous floods and that was subsequently remobilised. In future, we aim to further increase the temporal frequency of sediment sampling to characterize intra-flood variations and to combine 'conventional' fingerprinting techniques with low-cost infrared spectroscopy measurements.

International audience; Depuis 20 ans, en Haute-Normandie, la fréquence des inondations boueuses n'a pas cessé d'augmenter. Un des moyens de réduire le risque d'inondation boueuse est de limiter le ruissellement à sa source sur le territoire agricole. Différentes structures de développement agricoles souhaitent aider les agriculteurs à choisir les pratiques agricoles les plus adaptées à la réduction du ruissellement. La difficulté est que dans le contexte local de sols limoneux très sensibles à la battance, l'effet des pratiques actuellement mises en oeuvre par les agriculteurs n'est pas bien connu. C'est pourquoi les acteurs locaux aidés par l'INRA ont décidé de mettre en place un réseau visant la production de références de ruissellement. Ce réseau est conduit par des expérimentateurs travaillant dans 6 structures différentes. Ce réseau est basé sur l'utilisation d'un nouvel appareil mis au point pour mesurer le ruissellement sur de petites parcelles expérimentales (20 m2). Le poster présente les différentes structures impliquées dans le réseau, le nouvel appareil mis au point ainsi que les premiers résultats obtenus en 2001.

Particles eroded from hillslopes and exported to rivers are recognized to be composite particles of high internal complexity. Their architecture and composition are known to influence their transport behaviour within the water column relative to discrete particles. To-date, hillslope erosion studies consider aggregates to be stable once they are detached from the soil matrix. However, lowland rivers and estuaries studies often suggest that particle structure and dynamics are controlled by flocculation within the water column. In order to improve the understanding of particle dynamics along the continuum from hillslopes to the lowland river environment, soil particle behaviour was tested under controlled laboratory conditions. Seven flume erosion and deposition experiments, designed to simulate a natural erosive event, and five shear cell experiments were performed using three contrasting materials: two of them were poorly developed and as such can not be considered as soils, whilst the third one was a calcareous brown soil. These experiments revealed that soil aggregates were prone to disaggregation within the water column and that flocculation may affect their size distribution during transport. Large differences in effective particle size were found between soil types during the rising limb of the bed shear stress sequence. Indeed, at the maximum applied bed shear stress, the aggregated particles median diameter was found to be three times larger for the well-developed soil than for the two others. Differences were smaller in the falling limb, suggesting that soil aggregates underwent structural changes. However, characterization of particles strength parameters showed that these changes did not fully turn soil aggregates into flocs, but rather into hybrid soil aggregate-floc particles.
