6. Enhancing Soil Environments and Wheat Production through Water Hyacinth Biochar under Deficit Irrigation in Ethiopian Acidic Silty Loam Soil.

Abstract

The combined application of biochar and fertilizer has become increasingly popular for improving soil quality and crop productivity. However, the reported research results regarding the effects of biochar on soil properties and crop productivity have contradictory findings, indicating the requirement for further scientific research. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of a combined application of water hyacinth biochar (WHB) and NPS fertilizer on soil physicochemical properties and wheat yield under deficit irrigation conditions in acidic silty loam soil in Ethiopia. Four different biochar rates (0, 5, 10, and 20 t ha−1), three fertilizer rates (0, 100, and 200 kg NPS ha−1), and two irrigation regimes (50 and 100% of crop requirement) were evaluated to assess soil properties and wheat yields. The results showed that biochar amendment significantly reduced soil bulk density by 15.1–16.7%, and improved soil porosity by 6.8–8.6% and moisture content by 10.3–20.2%. Additionally, the combined application of biochar and fertilizer improved soil pH (0.26–0.87 units), NH4+–N (73.7–144%), NO3−–N (131–637%), and available phosphorus (85.8–427%), compared to the application of fertilizer alone. As a result, wheat dry biomass and grain yield increased by 260 and 173%, respectively. Furthermore, the combined application of WHB and fertilizer resulted in a comparable wheat dry biomass and grain yield even with a 50% reduction of irrigation water. Therefore, WHB has a significant potential to improve soil physicochemical properties and wheat yield when it is applied in combination with fertilizer, and it can reduce the water requirement for wheat production. Abstract

Wastewater containing high concentrations of ammonium-nitrogen (NH4+-N) is considered a major concern because its untreated discharge has a variety of adverse effects on the environment and human health. Adsorption using biochars is an easy and cost-effective wastewater treatment method. However, aquatic plants such as water hyacinth for biochar feedstock are considered unsuitable for adsorbent use due to limited NH4+-N adsorption capacity. In this study, biochar made from water hyacinth was modified with potassium hydroxide (KOH) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to obtain highly efficient adsorbent. This study aimed to enhance NH4+-N adsorption capacity by KOH- and H2O2-treatments and identify NH4+-N adsorption mechanism of the modified biochars derived from water hyacinth. The NH4+-N adsorption of all biochars was dependent on the initial solution pH increasing from pH 2 to 4, then relatively constant from pH 4 to 8. Pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir model were found to be the best fit for NH4+-N adsorption data. The maximum NH4+-N adsorption capacity of biochars increased about 8 times (17.1 mg g−1) and 10 times (21.5 mg g−1) after KOH- and H2O2-modification, respectively, compared to pristine biochar (2.14 mg g−1). The main NH4+-N adsorption mechanisms were suggested as cation exchange for both biochars particularly KOH-modified biochar, and hydrogen bonding by oxygen-containing surface functional groups for H2O2-modified biochar. This study suggested that aquatic plant-based biochar, which has been considered difficult to use, had potential as a promising alternative adsorbent for removing NH4+-N from wastewater through modification. Abstract

Ethiopia is frequently mentioned as highly vulnerable to climate variability due to its climate-sensitive agricultural sector. As a result, this study aimed to examine farmers' vulnerability across the various agroecological zones (AEZs) in the Suha watershed based on survey data from 384 respondents. A considerable difference in the two-measurement index, livelihood vulnerability index and IPCC vulnerability index, was seen across the selected agro-ecological zones. The lowland AEZ was more exposed, had a lower adaptive capacity, and was more vulnerable than the mid/high AEZ. This was confirmed by the LVI-IPCC analysis result, which was found as −0.07, 0.03 and 0.18 for midland, highland and lowland AEZs, respectively. The variation is associated with the difference in agro-ecological and socio-economic factors of the respondents. The results suggested that building well firmed adaptation strategies based on agro-ecological scenarios are vital to reduce the vulnerability of smallholder farmers. Further, understanding the physical and climatic diversity of each agro-ecological zone enables us to identify the appropriate requirements to adapt and minimize the vulnerability of smallholders' livelihood. In the meantime, adaptation measure based on the above index can be applicable at local area since the appraisal takes farmers' perception about climate variability into consideration.
