Abstract

Hardware evolves faster than software. While a hardware system might need replacement every one to five years, the average lifespan of a software system is a decade, with some instances living up to several decades. Inevitably, code outlives the platform it was developed for and may become legacy: development of the software stops, but maintenance has to continue to keep up with the evolving ecosystem. No new features are added, but the software is still used to fulfil its original purpose. Even in the cases where it is still functional (which discourages its replacement), legacy code is inefficient, costly to maintain, and a risk to security. This thesis proposes methods to leverage the expertise put in the development of legacy code and to extend its useful lifespan, rather than to throw it away. A novel methodology is proposed, for automatically exploiting platform specific optimisations when retargeting a program to another platform. The key idea is to leverage the optimisation information embedded in vector processing intrinsic functions. The performance of the resulting code is shown to be close to the performance of manually retargeted programs, however with the human labour removed. Building on top of that, the question of discovering optimisation information when there are no hints in the form of intrinsics or annotations is investigated. This thesis postulates that such information can potentially be extracted from profiling the data flow during executions of the program. A context-aware data dependence profiling system is described, detailing previously overlooked aspects in related research. The system is shown to be essential in surpassing the information that can be inferred statically, in particular about loop iterators. Loop iterators are the controlling part of a loop. This thesis describes and evaluates a system for extracting the loop iterators in a program. It is found to significantly outperform previously known techniques and further increases the amount of information about the structure of a program that is available to a compiler. Combining this system with data dependence profiling improves its results even more. Loop iterator recognition enables other code modernising techniques, like source code rejuvenation and commutativity analysis. The former increases the use of idiomatic code and as a result increases the maintainability of the program. The latter can potentially drive parallelisation and thus dramatically improve runtime performance.

Abstract

Component-based development is an approach that revolves around the construction of systems form pre-built modular units (components). If legacy code can be reverse engineered to extract components, the extracted components can provide architectural re-usability across multiple systems of the same domain. Current component directed reverse engineering approaches are based on component models that belong to architecture description languages (ADLs). ADL-based components cannot be reused without configurational changes at code level and binding every required and provided service. Moreover, these component models neither support code-independent composition after extraction of components nor the re-deposition of a composed configuration of components for future reuse. This thesis presents a reverse engineering approach that extracts components and addresses the limitations of current approaches, together with a tool called RX-MAN. Unlike ADL-based approaches, the presented approach is based on an encapsulated component model called X-MAN. X-MAN components are encapsulated because computation cannot go outside of a component. X-MAN components cannot interact directly but only exogenously (composition is defined outside of a component). Our approach offers code-independent composition after extracting components and does not need binding of all the services like ADLs. The evaluation of our approach shows that it can facilitate the re-usability of legacy code by providing code-independent composition and re-deposition of composed configurations of components for further reuse and composition.

Abstract

Program understanding is a time-consuming and tedious activity for software developers. Manually building abstractions from source code requires in-depth analysis of the code. Automatic extraction of such models is possible, but cannot derive meaningful abstractions that are not already contained in the code. The automated extraction even has problems to decide which aspects of the code are important and which are not. Therefore, interactive semi-automatic approaches are the compromise of choice. In this article, we describe how state machines that describe the behaviour of a function can be extracted from code. The approach includes interaction – the user decides which aspects of the identified potentially relevant information is really relevant and which is not. This helps to reduce the resulting state machines to an understandable degree. However, these state machines in their raw form have transition conditions that are very complex and thus not understandable for humans. Therefore, we also introduce a technique to reduce these guards to an understandable form. The technique is a combination of heuristic logic minimization, exploitation of infeasible paths, and using transition priorities. We evaluate the approach on industrial embedded C code, first in a case study with hundreds of extracted state machines, and then in two experiments with professional developers. The results show that the approach is highly effective in making the guards understandable, and that guards reduced by our approach and presented with priorities are easier to understand than guards without priorities. We also show that the overall approach is beneficial for program comprehension. The guard reduction approach itself is quite generic and can also be applied to other problems. Computer programs have been an essential part of scientific research for decades, including complex models, data pipelines and real-time experimental control software among others. As the platforms and frameworks for software development have changed dramatically during that time period, older software is often incompatible with modern systems. Preserving the thought and work that went into legacy code and make it usable today can be a difficult task. We here report on lessons we learned bringing more than 60,000 lines of C++98 code originally written for Windows 2000 onto modern systems. Abstract

The software PeTrack (short for Pedestrian Tracker) is developed for extracting data of people as their head trajectories from videos. Two years ago, a colleague and I got the mission from the original developer to improve, extend and future-proof the software. Taking over an existing code base comes with its challenges. From simple questions like “How do I get this compiled?” to more complicated ones like “How do I make sure I don’t break existing functionality?”. This talk is about how we addressed these challenges. The software is now thriving; it’s more stable than before, is automatically tested in a CI pipeline, and has a bunch of new features.

We present SpExSim, a software tool for quickly surveying legacy code bases for kernels that could be accelerated by FPGA-based compute units. We specifically aim for low development effort by considering the use of C-based high-level hardware synthesis, instead of complex manual hardware designs. SpExSim not only exploits the spatially distributed model of computation commonly used on FPGAs, but can also model the effect of two different microarchitectures commonly used in C-to-hardware compilers, including pipelined architectures with modulo scheduling. 26. A Framework for Legacy Source Code Audit Analytics.

Abstract

An internal audit engagement at a large bank revealed that legacy software code can represent significant risk to an organization. In this engagement, several instances of malicious COBOL source code were discovered through manual inspection and identification. The internal auditors were concerned that more instances of faulty code could be in the production environment, and that manually inspecting over 100 million lines of source code would be infeasible. Under their auspices, I developed the Retrospective Static Source Code Analysis Framework for automatically identifying source code files likely to contain source code faults. We implemented this audit analytic framework in a tool called COBOL Analyzer. Using the tool, the auditors discovered thousands of potential source code files with faults and, using a ranking method, audited the most suspicious ones. Abstract

The model error in climate models depends on mesh resolution, among other factors. While global refinement of the computational mesh is often not feasible computationally, adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) can be an option for spatially localized features. Creating a climate model with AMR has been prohibitive so far. We use AMR in one single-model component, namely the tracer transport scheme. Particularly, we integrate AMR into the tracer transport module of the atmospheric model ECHAM6 and test our implementation in several idealized scenarios and in a realistic application scenario (dust transport). To achieve this goal, we modify the flux-form semi-Lagrangian (FFSL) transport scheme in ECHAM6 such that we can use it on adaptive meshes while retaining all important properties (such as mass conservation) of the original FFSL implementation. Our proposed AMR scheme is dimensionally split and ensures that high-resolution information is always propagated on (locally) highly resolved meshes. We utilize a data structure that can accommodate an adaptive Gaussian grid. We demonstrate that our AMR scheme improves both accuracy and efficiency compared to the original FFSL scheme. More importantly, our approach improves the representation of transport processes in ECHAM6 for coarse-resolution simulations. Hence, this paper suggests that we can overcome the overhead of developing a fully adaptive Earth system model by integrating AMR into single components while leaving data structures of the dynamical core untouched. This enables studies to retain well-tested and complex legacy code of existing models while still improving the accuracy of specific components without sacrificing efficiency.

My technical and STS topics address problems that are completely different from one another. My technical topic highlights my experience working as a software engineering intern during the summer of 2021. The foundation of my internship relied on the idea of encryption of data in the context of licensing software. On the other hand, my STS topic provides an analysis as to why toxic behavior in video games exists. The foundation of my STS topic research relies on the fact that there is not a lot of research on toxic behavior in competitive settings. In my analysis, I provide insight on the causes of toxic behavior. While the topics differ greatly, I had the opportunity to analyze a problem and come up with a solution or offer underlying reasons that generated the problem. My technical report recounts my experience as a software engineering intern where I developed a licensing algorithm and updated legacy code for software written in the early 2000s. I developed the licensing algorithm using RSA encryption, which I used to generate license keys and validate license files. The main component of the license key generation was the user’s MAC address, which served as a unique identifier to ensure that the license was valid. Updating the legacy code in the software primarily involved updating the GUI to a 64-bit standard. For this, I used a completely different library than the previous one, the Qt library. With this library, I also created a GUI for a license file generation tool that the company could use for its users. With these changes, the company is able to redistribute the software that was once outdated. My STS research focuses on why toxic behavior exists in video games in the context of competitive settings. The importance of this relies on the fact that getting to the root of the problem is integral to understanding how to solve the problem. In my paper, I argue that players behave in a toxic manner because of their desire to win at all costs. In addition to this, I utilize Slovic’s model in “Beyond Numbers: a Broader Perspective on Risk Perception and Communication” to apply risk assessment to my analysis. The aim of my STS research is to provide the information needed to create solutions for reducing toxicity in video games. The difference in these two topics provided me with the opportunity to research and explore two different avenues. My internship and technical topic allowed me to gain a broader understanding of encryption and software licensing. I was able to research a topic that I had no previous knowledge about and come up with a working solution that could be integrated. My STS topic helped me understand the underlying factors that contributed to toxic behavior in video games. By considering the culture of video games and applying risk assessment to my analysis, I was able to deduce several reasons for toxic behavior. In doing so, I provided a basis that could be used to develop a solution to toxicity in video games.

Abstract

The rapid development of software quality measurement methods, the need in efficient and versatile reengineering automatization tools becomes increasingly bigger. This becomes even more apparent when the programming language and respective coding practices slowly develop alongside each other for a long period of time, while the legacy code base grows bigger and remains highly relevant. In this paper, a source code metrics measurement tool for Fortran program quality evaluation is developed. It is implemented as a code module for Photran integrated development environment and based on a set of syntax tree walking algorithms. The module utilizes the built-in Photran syntax analysis engine and the tree data structure which it builds from the source code. The developed tool is also compared to existing source code analysis instruments. The results show that the developed tool is most effective when used in combination with Photran’s built-in refactoring system, and that Photran’s application programming interface facilitates easy scaling of the existing infrastructure by introducing other code analysis methods.
