After decades of relative neglect, interest in Venus surges anew in the planetary science community and the public. New missions are planned and selected, and will pave the way to the decade of Venus, as new observations allow us to uncover some of the many mysteries our closest Solar System neighbor still harbors. Building on the legacy of past works, here, we discuss the state of our understanding of Venus, from both observation and modeling. We describe each of the envelopes of the planet, from its atmosphere to its interior with an eye for the most recent advances and current topics of interest. We then briefly discuss coupled modelling efforts to better constrain the evolution of the planet. Finally, we describe how the upcoming missions and concepts will further lift the veil on Venus' secrets.

While small, Neptune-like planets are among the most abundant exoplanets, our understanding of their atmospheric structure and dynamics remains sparse. In particular, many unknowns remain on the way moist convection works in these atmospheres where condensable species are heavier than the non-condensable background gas. While it has been predicted that moist convection could shut-down above some threshold abundance of these condensable species, this prediction is based on simple linear analysis and relies on strong assumptions on the saturation of the atmosphere. To investigate this issue, we develop a 3D cloud resolving model for H2 atmospheres with large amounts of condensable species and apply this model to a prototypical temperate Neptune-like planet -- K2-18b. Our model confirms the shut-down of moist convection and the onset of a stably stratified layer in the atmosphere, leading to much hotter deep atmospheres and interiors. Our 3D simulations further provide quantitative estimates of the turbulent mixing in this stable layer, which is a key driver of the cycling of condensables in the atmosphere. This allows us to build a very simple, yet realistic 1D model that captures the most salient features of the structure of Neptune-like atmospheres. Our qualitative findings on the behavior of moist convection in hydrogen atmospheres go beyond temperate planets and should also apply to the regions where iron and silicates condense in the deep interior of H2-dominated planets. Finally, we use our model to investigate the likelihood of a liquid ocean beneath a H2 dominated atmosphere on K2-18b. We find that the planet would need to have a very high albedo (>0.5-0.6) to sustain a liquid ocean. However, due to the spectral type of the star, the amount of aerosol scattering that would be needed to provide such a high albedo is inconsistent with the latest observational data., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Venus clouds host a convective layer between roughly 50 and 60 km that mixes heat, momentum, and chemical species. Observations and numerical modelling have helped to understand the complexity of this region. However, the impact on chemistry is still not known. Here, we use for the first time a three-dimensional convection-resolving model with passive tracers to mimic SO$_2$ and H$_2$O for two latitudinal cases. The tracers are relaxed towards a vertical profile in agreement with measured values, with a timescale varying over several orders of magnitude. The vertical mixing is quantified, it is strong for a relaxation timescale high in front of the convective timescale, around 4 hours. The spatial and temporal variability of the tracer due to the convective activity is estimated, with horizontal structures of several kilometres. At the Equator, the model is resolving a convective layer at the cloud top (70 km) suggested by some observations, the impact of such turbulent activity on chemical species is accounted for the first time. From the resolved convective plumes, a vertical eddy diffusion is estimated, consistent with past estimations from in-situ measurements, but several orders of magnitude higher than values used in 1D chemistry modelling. Few spacecraft have studied the dynamics of Venus' deep atmosphere, which is needed to understand the interactions between the surface and atmosphere. Recent global simulations suggest a strong effect of the diurnal cycle of surface winds on the depth of the planetary boundary layer. We propose to use a turbulent-resolving model to characterize the Venus boundary layer and the impact of surface winds for the first time. Simulations were performed in the low plain and high terrain at the Equator and noon and midnight. A strong diurnal cycle is resolved in the high terrain, with a convective layer reaching 7 km above the local surface and vertical wind of 1.3 m/s. The boundary layer depth in the low plain is consistent with the observed wavelength of the dune fields. At noon, the resolved surface wind field for both locations is strong enough to lift dust particles and engender micro-dunes. Numerous observational evidence has suggested the presence of active meteorology in the atmospheres of brown dwarfs. A near-infrared brightness variability has been observed. Clouds have a major role in shaping the thermal structure and spectral properties of these atmospheres. The mechanism of such variability is still unclear and both 1D and global circulation model cannot fully study this topics due to resolution. In this study, a convective resolving model is coupled to grey-band radiative transfer in order to study the coupling between the convective atmosphere and the variability of clouds over a large temperature range with a domain of several hundreds of kilometers. Six types of clouds are considered, with microphysics including settling. The clouds are radiatively active using Rosseland mean coefficient. Radiative cloud feedback can drive spontaneous atmospheric variability in both temperature and cloud structure, as modeled for the first time in three dimensions. Silicate clouds have the most effect of the thermal structure with the generation of a secondary convective layer in some cases, depending on the assumed particle size. Iron and Aluminum clouds also have a substantial impact on the atmosphere. Thermal spectra were computed, and we find the strongest effect of clouds is the smoothing of spectral features at optical wavelengths. Compared to observed L and T dwarfs on color-magnitude diagram, the simulated atmospheres are redder for most of the cases. Condensable species are crucial in shaping planetary climate. A wide range of planetary climate systems involve understanding non-dilute condensable substances and their influence on climate dynamics. There has been progress on large-scale dynamical effects and on 1D convection parameterization, but resolved 3D moist convection remains unexplored in non-dilute conditions, though it can have a profound impact on temperature/humidity profiles and cloud structure. We tackle this problem for pure-steam atmospheres using three-dimensional, high-resolution numerical simulations of convection in post-runaway atmospheres where the water reservoir at the surface has been exhausted. We show that the atmosphere is comprised of two characteristic regions, an upper condensing region dominated by gravity waves and a lower noncondensing region characterized by convective overturning cells. Velocities in the condensing region are much smaller than those in the lower noncondensing region, and the horizontal temperature variation is small overall. Condensation in the thermal photosphere is largely driven by radiative cooling and tends to be statistically homogeneous. Some condensation also happens deeper, near the boundary of the condensing region, due to triggering by gravity waves and convective penetrations and exhibit random patchiness. This qualitative structure is insensitive to varying model parameters, but quantitative details may differ. Our results confirm theoretical expectations that atmospheres close to the pure-steam limit do not have organized deep convective plumes in the condensing region. A large fraction of known terrestrial-size exoplanets located in the Habitable Zone of M-dwarfs are expected to be tidally-locked. Numerous efforts have been conducted to study the climate of such planets, using in particular 3-D Global Climate Models (GCM). One of the biggest challenges in simulating such an extreme environment is to properly represent the effects of sub-grid convection. Most GCMs use either a simplistic convective-adjustment parametrization or sophisticated (e.g., mass flux scheme) Earth-tuned parametrizations. One way to improve the representation of convection is to study convection using Convection Resolving numerical Models (CRMs), with an fine spatial resolution . In this study, we developed a CRM coupling the non-hydrostatic dynamical core WRF with the radiative transfer and cloud/precipitation models of the LMD-Generic climate model to study convection and clouds on tidally-locked planets, with a focus on Proxima b. Simulations were performed for a set of 3 surface temperatures (corresponding to three different incident fluxes) and 2 rotation rates, assuming an Earth-like atmosphere. The main result of our study is that while we recover the prediction of GCMs that (low-altitude) cloud albedo increases with increasing stellar flux, the cloud feedback is much weaker due to transient aggregation of convection leading to low partial cloud cover., Comment: Accepted for publications in The Astrophysical Journal. 42 pages, 14 figures, 1 table

Ariel, the Atmospheric Remote-sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large-survey, was adopted as the fourth medium-class mission in ESA's Cosmic Vision programme to be launched in 2029. During its 4-year mission, Ariel will study what exoplanets are made of, how they formed and how they evolve, by surveying a diverse sample of about 1000 extrasolar planets, simultaneously in visible and infrared wavelengths. It is the first mission dedicated to measuring the chemical composition and thermal structures of hundreds of transiting exoplanets, enabling planetary science far beyond the boundaries of the Solar System. The payload consists of an off-axis Cassegrain telescope (primary mirror 1100 mm x 730 mm ellipse) and two separate instruments (FGS and AIRS) covering simultaneously 0.5-7.8 micron spectral range. The satellite is best placed into an L2 orbit to maximise the thermal stability and the field of regard. The payload module is passively cooled via a series of V-Groove radiators; the detectors for the AIRS are the only items that require active cooling via an active Ne JT cooler. The era of atmospheric characterization of terrestrial exoplanets is just around the corner. Modeling prior to observations is crucial in order to predict the observational challenges and to prepare for the data interpretation. This paper presents the report of the TRAPPIST Habitable Atmosphere Intercomparison (THAI) workshop (14-16 September 2020). A review of the climate models and parameterizations of the atmospheric processes on terrestrial exoplanets, model advancements and limitations, as well as direction for future model development was discussed. The Akatsuki instrument LIR measured an unprecedented wave feature at the top of Venusian cloud layer. Stationary bow-shape waves of thousands of kilometers large lasting several Earth days have been observed over the main equatorial mountains. Here we use for the first time a mesoscale model of the Venus's atmosphere with high-resolution topography and fully coupled interactive radiative transfer computations. Mountain waves resolved by the model form large-scale bow shape waves with an amplitude of about 1.5 K and a size up to several decades of latitude similar to the ones measured by the Akatsuki spacecraft. The maximum amplitude of the waves appears in the afternoon due to an increase of the near-surface stability. Propagating vertically the waves encounter two regions of low static stability, the mixed layer between approximately 18 and 30 km and the convective layer between 50 and 55 km. Some part of the wave energy can pass through these regions via wave tunneling. These two layers act as wave filter, especially the deep atmosphere layer. The encounter with these layers generates trapped lee waves propagating horizontally. No stationary waves is resolved at cloud top over the polar regions because of strong circumpolar transient waves, and a thicker deep atmosphere mixed layer that filters most the mountain waves, Comment: 25 pages and 16 figures

Most exoplanets detected so far have atmospheric T significantly higher than 300K. Often close to their star, they receive an intense UV photons flux that triggers important photodissociation processes. The T dependency of VUV absorption cross sections are poorly known, leading to an undefined uncertainty in atmospheric models. Similarly, data measured at low T similar to that of the high atmosphere of Mars, Venus, and Titan are often lacking. Our aim is to quantify the T dependency of the abs. cross section of important molecules in planetary atmospheres. We want to provide both high-resolution data at T prevailing in these media and a simple parameterization of the absorption in order to simplify its use in photochemical models. This study focuses on carbon dioxide. We performed experimental measurements of CO$_2$ absorption cross section with synchrotron radiation for the wavelength range (115--200nm). For longer wavelengths (195--230nm), we used a deuterium lamp and a 1.5m Jobin-Yvon spectrometer. We used these data in our 1D thermo-photochemical model in order to study their impact on the predicted atmospheric compositions. The cross section of CO$_2$ increases with T. It can be separated in two parts: a continuum and a fine structure superimposed on the continuum. The variation of the continuum of absorption can be represented by the sum of three gaussian functions. Using data at high T in thermo-photochemical models modifies significantly the abundance and the photodissociation rates of many species, in addition to CO$_2$, such as methane and ammonia. These deviations have an impact on synthetic transmission spectra, leading to variations of up to 5 ppm.
