Abstract

The article reports on issues concerning the tuna-porpoise relationship. It is reported that this relationship has led to an increased porpoise's mortality as they often die in the nets laid by fishermen intended for the tuna. It is informed that some of the mystery of that relationship may be solved through a multifaceted research program, which many scientists and conservationists believe is long overdue. For the past several years the U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) within the U.S. Department of Commerce has worked with the tuna industry to develop new fishing techniques and net modifications to reduce mortality. NMFS had intended to strive for a 30% reduction in porpoise mortality in 1976. INSET: Dramatis Personae.
