We propose a new theory of public narrative, its practice, and its pedagogy that can prepare leaders to mobilize collective action toward tackling grand challenges and respond to the call for humanizing leadership development. We define "public narrative" as a process of accessing, articulating, and communicating shared values. We argue that, through crafting their public narratives, leaders can enact their moral resources to motivate others to choose collective action. By conceptualizing "values" as affective commitments, we propose that public narrative is constructed through the articulation of specific narrative moments—stories of hurt (why I care) and hope (why I can act)—that communicate one's moral resources. We then argue that our pedagogy can be used in leadership development by enabling leaders to articulate a story of self, a story of us, and a story of now: the experiential communication of one's values that have called one to leadership, of overlapping values shared by one's constituency, and of challenges to those values that require urgent collective action. Last, we describe our core pedagogical principles and discuss the implications of our pedagogy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Effectively reducing climate change requires marked, global behavior change. However, it is unclear which strategies are most likely to motivate people to change their climate beliefs and behaviors. Here, we tested 11 expert-crowdsourced interventions on four climate mitigation outcomes: beliefs, policy support, information sharing intention, and an effortful tree-planting behavioral task. Across 59,440 participants from 63 countries, the interventions' effectiveness was small, largely limited to nonclimate skeptics, and differed across outcomes: Beliefs were strengthened mostly by decreasing psychological distance (by 2.3%), policy support by writing a letter to a future-generation member (2.6%), information sharing by negative emotion induction (12.1%), and no intervention increased the more effortful behavior-several interventions even reduced tree planting. Last, the effects of each intervention differed depending on people's initial climate beliefs. These findings suggest that the impact of behavioral climate interventions varies across audiences and target behaviors.

Although many organizations value leadership across levels, individuals are reluctant to step up and lead. We explore how anticipated image risk (i.e., individuals' beliefs that the act of leading might harm their image with others) and lay beliefs about leadership ability (i.e., that this ability is fixed versus malleable) may diminish individuals' endorsement of a leader identity and thus their leadership emergence. Across MBA consulting teams, supervisor–employee dyads, and virtual workers, we find that lay theories of leadership ability moderate the negative relationship between anticipated image risk in leadership and leader-identity endorsement, which affects subsequent leadership emergence (Study 1). Using qualitative survey data, Study 2 identifies three specific image concerns that individuals associated with leading: seeming bossy, seeming unqualified, and seeming different from one's peers. Study 3 tests whether a newly developed measure of three specific image risks similarly predicts leader-identity endorsement and emergence. Last, in Study 4 we experimentally manipulate the anticipation of image risk to show its causal impact on leader-identity endorsement and emergence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

People's compassion responses often weaken with repeated exposure to suffering, a phenomenon known as compassion fatigue. Why is it so difficult to continue feeling compassion in response to others' suffering? We propose that people's limited-compassion mindsets—beliefs about compassion as a limited resource and a fatiguing experience—can result in a self-fulfilling prophecy that reinforces compassion fatigue. Across four studies of adults sampled from university students and online participant pools in the United States, we show that there is variability in people's compassion mindsets, that these mindsets can be changed with convincing information, and that limited-compassion mindsets predict lower feelings of compassion, lower-quality social support, and more fatigue. This contributes to our understanding of factors that underlie compassion fatigue and supports the broader idea that people's beliefs about the nature of emotions affect how emotions are experienced. Together, this research contributes to developing a strategy for increasing people's capacity to feel compassion and their social support. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Across the globe, every workday people commute an average of 38 minutes each way, yet surprisingly little research has examined the implications of this daily routine for work-related outcomes. Integrating theories of boundary work, self-control, and work-family conflict, we propose that the commute to work serves as a liminal role transition between home and work roles, prompting employees to engage in boundary management strategies. Across three field studies (n = 1,736), including a four-week-long intervention study, we find that lengthy morning commutes are more aversive for employees with lower trait self-control and greater work-family conflict, leading to decreased job satisfaction and increased turnover. In addition, we find that employees who engage in a specific boundary management strategy we term role-clarifying prospection (i.e., thinking about the upcoming work role) are less likely to be negatively affected by lengthy commutes to work. Results further show that employees with higher levels of trait self-control are more likely to engage in role-clarifying prospection, and employees who experience higher levels of work-family conflict are more likely to benefit from role-clarifying prospection. Although the commute to work is typically seen as an undesirable part of the workday, our theory and results point to the benefits of using it as an opportunity to transition into one’s work role.

25. Loneliness Hampers Leadership Emergence.

- Abstract
Despite having the qualities needed to become leaders, many people are reluctant to assume leadership roles. We suggest that loneliness can be an important deterrent for the emergence of leaders. In Study 1, a survey of employees and their supervisors (n = 691) found that feelings of loneliness are associated with a lower willingness to lead, with lower leader identity endorsement, and with lower leadership self-efficacy. Leadership self-efficacy mediated the relationship between leader identity endorsement and the willingness to lead. In Study 2, a sample of MBA consulting teams (n = 85) revealed that students who felt lonely engaged in less informal leadership (as rated by their peers). Consistent with Study 1, loneliness also predicted lower leader identity endorsement and lower leadership self-efficacy. Study 3 (n = 604) provided evidence that beliefs about leadership as a lonely endeavor dampen the endorsement of a leadership identity, with higher perceived image risk from leading mediating this relationship. This research highlights the importance of fostering human connections in leadership to motivate people to step up and lead. Fostering a sense of connectedness in organizations can not only enhance the well-being of its members, but also boost the emergence of leaders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Identity is crucial for our understanding of how and why individuals categorize themselves as leaders. Leader identities are dynamic, and they can shift momentarily due to internal and external influences. Theoretical and empirical evidence to explain how and why identity influences the leadership process is currently limited. Accordingly, there is a need for further theorizing and investigation into the antecedents, situational triggers, boundary conditions and outcomes of leader identity dynamics. As well as further validation and precision of measurement tools. We aim to fill these gaps in the literature by integrating the conceptual spaces of identity threat and impostorism as complementary perspectives to explain how and why leader identities change. Through a combination of five theoretical and empirical papers, this symposium contributes to the field by examining the influence of identity conflict and enhancement on meaningful work, unearthing the triggers of identity threat, testing the effects of leader identity and impostorism on wellbeing, enhancing the measurement of leader impostorism and offering new directions for authentic leadership theory. To conclude, an expert in the psychology of identities in organizations will synthesize and critically review the insights from the five presentations to kick off a fruitful discussion with the audience. - Abstract
Business ethics has emerged as one of the most critical issues confronting society, and a substantial literature in behavioral ethics provides important insights into ethical decision making in organizations. In this symposium, we challenge some of the fundamental assumptions and insights in this literature. In a series of papers, we demonstrate that though prior research provides important insights into ethical perceptions, ethical decision making, and unethical behavior in organizations, many characteristics and relationships remain uncertain. In all, our symposium pushes the boundaries of the field of behavioral ethics, raises important theoretical, empirical, and methodological questions, and prompts the need for more research on ethical decision making and unethical behavior in organizations.
Across 59,440 participants from 63 countries, the interventions’ effectiveness was small, largely limited to nonclimate skeptics, and differed across outcomes: Beliefs were strengthened mostly by decreasing psychological distance (by 2.3%), policy support by writing a letter to a future-generation member (2.6%), information sharing by negative emotion induction (12.1%), and no intervention increased the more effortful behavior—several interventions even reduced tree planting. Last, the effects of each intervention differed depending on people’s initial climate beliefs. These findings suggest that the impact of behavioral climate interventions varies across audiences and target behaviors.
