This study sought to investigate the relationship between surgical failure and increased cerebral blood flow (CBF) pattern using SPECT in patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy with unilateral hippocampal sclerosis (MTLE-HS).Methods: Among 42 subjects who underwent anterior temporal lobectomy with amygdalohippocampectomy (ATL-AH) for MTLE-HS, 29 (69.0%) were seizure-free (SF group). Hyperperfusion was compared in 14 ipsilateral and contralateral brain regions in SISCOM images between the two groups.Results: The pattern of ictal hyperperfusion in temporal regions did not vary significantly between the SF and non-seizure-free (NSF) groups. However, CBF increases in the contralateral occipital area was more frequent in the NSF group than in the SF group. Furthermore, ictal hyperperfusion of the ipsilateral occipital and contralateral parietal areas tended to be more frequent in the NSF group.Conclusion: The results indicate that poor ATL-AH surgical outcome is associated with a tendency of ictal hyperperfusion of the contralateral occipital cortex based on SISCOM analysis. The pattern of early ictal CBF changes implicating the propagation from temporal to occipital cortices can be considered a marker of poor surgical outcomes of ATL-AH in MTLE-HS patients.Keywords: temporal lobe epilepsy, ictal hyperperfusion, SISCOM, contralateral occipital

Hierarchical nanoporous carbons combining pore sizes of different length scales are highly important for separation processes. However, critical questions remain regarding the hierarchical structure regulation and the molecular mechanisms of gaseous adsorbate uptake and interactions within the hierarchical nanoporous carbons. These materials present characterization challenges in that there are no experimental techniques that can elucidate the molecular mechanisms of the organic compounds and CO2 within the materials. We deployed multidimensional solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to generate maps of guest-framework interactions as a function of adsorbate concentrations and adsorption times. The NMR spectra provide insight toward the design of effective hierarchical pore structures. Our materials show a high volatile organic compounds/CO2 physisorption capacity, which reveals promising application to carbon-capture strategies to mitigate global warming.

Introduction: Polypharmacy is common within the geriatric population due to the commonality of multiple comorbidities and use of multiple providers. The emergency department (ED) is a prime location to capture these patients, especially when they present with chief complaints which may be medication related. Much of this population is prescribed potentially inappropriate medications which increases their risk for adverse drug reactions. Pharmacist review of patient home medication lists has been shown to decrease the number of potentially inappropriate medications, as well as medication-related problems, such as therapeutic duplications and drug interactions. These reductions can increase patient safety. The goal of this project was to evaluate the impact of a comprehensive home medication list review performed by a pharmacist for patients 65 years or older within the ED, in conjunction with ED provider education on potential interventions. Methods: This retrospective study compared the average number of home medication modifications made per patient by ED providers at baseline compared to intervention implementation of provider education and pharmacist home medication list review. Additionally, the rate of return to the ED was also compared. Data were collected through manual chart review. Secondary outcomes include total number of pharmacist recommendations, average number of pharmacist recommendations per patient, total number of Medication Management Services (MMS) referrals, total number of MMS consults completed, and total number of MMS interventions. Results: There was a statically significant increase in the average number of medications changes per patient on discharge between the two groups with an average of 0.1 changes (SD 0.3, 0.0–2.0) in the pre-intervention group and 0.7 changes (SD 1.5, 0.0–7.0; p

Transport of diluted bitumen (dilbit) from Canada’s oil sands region poses risk for leaks and spills of petroleum-derived contaminants into the environment. Exposure of fish to dilbit is known to cause cardiotoxicity, developmental deformities, and impairment in swim performance. However, previous studies have examined the toxicity of dilbit in laboratory settings which does not account for environmental and biological food-web variables that may alter exposure and/or toxicity of dilbit. Moreover, most methods of assessing organism health following oil exposure require lethal sampling. This work is a part of a larger set of experiments where dilbit spills were simulated within enclosures on a lake; the present study assesses the impacts of residual levels of dilbit that may have entered the surrounding lake environment from the enclosures following model spill cleanup. In order to understand the impacts of residual dilbit in an ecosystem setting without use of lethal sampling, epidermal mucus was collected and sequenced from lake charr (Salvelinus namaycush) exposed to residual dilbit in a boreal lake. While concentrations reached a maximum of 2.29 μg/L total polycyclic aromatic compounds (ΣPAC) within surface waters, surface water ΣPAC concentrations generally remained below 1 μg/L. Results of RNA sequencing were compared to sequencing data from mucus collected prior to dilbit additions. Differential gene expression and pathway analyses indicated dysregulation of genes associated with intermediary and energy metabolism as well as a trend in upregulation of cyp1a3 in epidermal mucus following dilbit exposure. Thus, results of the present study suggest that lake charr undergo consistent biological responses after exposure to residual levels of dilbit following a model spill, and that mRNA-based analysis of mucus may be a viable method for non-lethal oil exposure assessment. Overall, the results provide insight on the response of wild fish to very dilute dilbit exposures after a model spill cleanup.

SUMMARYThe recent outbreak of H1N1 has provided the scientific community with a sad but timely opportunity to understand the influence of socioeconomic determinants on H1N1 pandemic mortality. To this end, we have used data collected from 341 US counties to model H1N1 deaths/1000 using 12 socioeconomic predictors to discover why certain counties reported fewer H1N1 deaths compared to other counties. These predictors were then used to build a decision tree. The decision tree developed was then used to predict H1N1 mortality for the whole of the USA. Our estimate of 7667 H1N1 deaths are in accord with the lower bound of the CDC estimate of 8870 deaths. In addition to the H1N1 death estimates, we have listed possible counties to be targeted for health-related interventions. The respective state/county authorities can use these results as the basis to target and optimize the distribution of public health resources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To test the carcinostatic effects of ascorbic acid, we challenged the mice of seven experimental groups with 1.7 x 10(-4) mol high dose concentration ascorbic acid after intraperitoneal administrating them with sarcoma S-180 cells. The survival rate was increased by 20% in the group that received high dose concentration ascorbic acid, compared to the control. The highest survival rate was observed in the group in which 1.7 x 10(-4) mol ascorbic acid had been continuously injected before and after the induction of cancer cells, rather than just after the induction of cancer cells. The expression of three angiogenesis-related genes was inhibited by 0.3 times in bFGF, 7 times in VEGF and 4 times in MMP2 of the groups with higher survival rates. Biopsy Results, gene expression studies, and wound healing analysis in vivo and in vitro suggested that the carcinostatic effect induced by high dose concentration ascorbic acid occurred through inhibition of angiogenesis. AIMS: This study explores the association between the ratio of triglyceride (TG) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and insulin resistance according to waist circumference in the general Korean population. METHODS: 7623 participants were selected from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) conducted during 2007-2009 and included in this cross-sectional study. Insulin resistance was defined as the values equal to or greater than the 75th percentile of the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). RESULTS: Positive correlation was found between the ratio of TG and HDL-C and other variables such as waist circumference, total cholesterol, and HOMA-IR for both men and women. The odds ratios (ORs) (95% confidence interval) for insulin resistance for the highest quartile of TG/HDL-C were 2.48 in men and 3.05 in women. The significant relationship between the TG/HDL-C ratio and insulin resistance was not only maintained across all quartiles of waist circumference but also seemed to be enhanced in the higher quartiles of waist circumference. CONCLUSION: In the general Korean population, there seems to be a linear association between TG/HDL-C ratio and insulin resistance, regardless of degrees of waist circumference. Background: Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) has a poor prognosis, and current treatments are limited by high toxicity and low survival rates, highlighting the need for new therapeutic approaches. Natural killer (NK) cells can identify and eliminate cancer cells without prior antigen exposure. Radiotherapy directly targets tumors and increases activating ligands on tumor cells, promoting NK cell interactions. Cetuximab, an EGFR-targeting antibody, enhances NK cell cytotoxicity. Additionally, anti-PD-1 antibodies may further boost NK cell function by blocking inhibitory signals. The study aimed to enhance HNSCC treatment efficacy by combining radiotherapy and targeted therapy with expanded NK cells., Methods: NK cells were isolated, activated, and expanded from healthy donors. The FaDu and SCC-47 cell lines were inoculated into NOD/SCID mice. The mice were treated with PD-1 inhibitors, cetuximab, and radiation, followed by intravenous injection of NK cells., Results: Radiation increased ligands that regulate NK cell sensitivity. The combination of cetuximab, radiotherapy, and expanded NK cells significantly suppressed cancer progression and improved survival rates. However, adding anti-PD-1 antibodies did not further enhance outcomes., Conclusion: This study suggests that a multimodal approach combining cetuximab, radiotherapy, and NK cells can significantly improve HNSCC therapy efficacy, offering a novel and promising treatment strategy.

This study was aimed to investigate the effectiveness of activated carbon on reduction in biogenic amines (BAs) via two-stage adsorption process at industrial scale, and the consequent effect was evaluated by the taste and aroma of anchovy fish sauce. Through reaction surface methodology, the optimal working paratmeters were determined to adsorbent composition of 2% activated carbon and 0.9% diatomite under temperature of 27 °C for 97 min. Upon optimized settings at industrial scale, there were effective reductions in tryptamine (by 100%), cadaverine (by 10%), histamine (by 61%), and tyramine (by 96%), while the changes in taste-related amino nitrogen, total nitrogen, free amino acids, and color were minimum. In addition, off-flavor-causing compounds, such as alcohols and acids, were removed by the developed method. Cholesterol crystals, which cause inflammation and various diseases, predominantly grow in a platy, rhomboid structure on the plasma membranes but exhibit an uneven three-dimensional (3D) architecture intracellularly. Here, it is demonstrated how cholesterol crystallizes in a non-rhomboidal shape on the surface of lipid droplets and develops into 3D sheet-like agglomerates using an in vitro lipid droplet reconstitution system with stereoscopic fluorescence imaging. The findings reveal that interfacial cholesterol transport on the lipid droplet surface and unique lipid droplet components significantly influence the nucleation-and-growth dynamics of cholesterol crystals, leading to crystal growth in various polygonal shapes. Furthermore, cholesterol crystals readily agglomerate to form large, curved sheet structures on the confined, spherical surfaces of lipid droplets. Background: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of iliac crest height on clinical and radiological outcomes following oblique lateral interbody fusion (OLIF) at the L4-5 level. Methods: Data of patients who underwent single-level OLIF at the L4-5 level for degenerative spinal stenosis were retrospectively analyzed. The patients were categorized into three groups based on their iliac crest height measured relative to the L4 and L5 pedicles. Categorical and quantitative analyses, including univariate and multivariate logistic regressions, were performed to identify subsidence predictors. Clinical outcomes, including visual analog scale scores for back and leg pain, were assessed over a minimum 2-year follow-up. Results: No significant differences in cage obliquity were observed across the iliac crest height groups (axial angles, p = 0.39; coronal angles, p = 0.79). However, subsidence was significantly more common in patients with higher iliac crest heights, particularly at crest level III, where the subsidence rate reached 43% ( p = 0.01). Subsidence was predominantly associated with damage to the L5 endplate, which occurred in 83% of subsidence cases at crest level III. A cutoff value of 12 mm for iliac crest height, above which the risk of subsidence significantly increased, was identified (AUC = 0.688, p = 0.042). Conclusions: Iliac crest height is a critical factor for predicting subsidence following OLIF at the L4-5 level. Surgeons should consider alternative strategies and meticulous preoperative planning in patients with an iliac crest height ≥ 12 mm to reduce the risk of adverse outcomes. Further studies are needed to validate these findings and to explore their long-term implications.

Background: Older adults, a population particularly susceptible to misinformation, may experience attempts at health-related scams or defrauding, and they may unknowingly spread misinformation. Previous research has investigated managing misinformation through media literacy education or supporting users by fact-checking information and cautioning for potential misinformation content, yet studies focusing on older adults are limited. Chatbots have the potential to educate and support older adults in misinformation management. However, many studies focusing on designing technology for older adults use the needs-based approach and consider aging as a deficit, leading to issues in technology adoption. Instead, we adopted the asset-based approach, inviting older adults to be active collaborators in envisioning how intelligent technologies can enhance their misinformation management practices., Objective: This study aims to understand how older adults may use chatbots' capabilities for misinformation management., Methods: We conducted 5 participatory design workshops with a total of 17 older adult participants to ideate ways in which chatbots can help them manage misinformation. The workshops included 3 stages: developing scenarios reflecting older adults' encounters with misinformation in their lives, understanding existing chatbot platforms, and envisioning how chatbots can help intervene in the scenarios from stage 1., Results: We found that issues with older adults' misinformation management arose more from interpersonal relationships than individuals' ability to detect misinformation in pieces of information. This finding underscored the importance of chatbots to act as mediators that facilitate communication and help resolve conflict. In addition, participants emphasized the importance of autonomy. They desired chatbots to teach them to navigate the information landscape and come to conclusions about misinformation on their own. Finally, we found that older adults' distrust in IT companies and governments' ability to regulate the IT industry affected their trust in chatbots. Thus, chatbot designers should consider using well-trusted sources and practicing transparency to increase older adults' trust in the chatbot-based tools. Overall, our results highlight the need for chatbot-based misinformation tools to go beyond fact checking., Conclusions: This study provides insights for how chatbots can be designed as part of technological systems for misinformation management among older adults. Objective : This study investigated the influence of the vacuum phenomenon (VP) on surgical outcomes in patients with lumbar spinal stenosis, comparing minimally invasive oblique lateral interbody fusion (MIS OLIF) and endoscopic decompression. Methods : A cohort of 110 patients diagnosed with lumbar spinal stenosis underwent either endoscopic decompression or MIS OLIF. Patients were classified into two groups based on the presence or absence of the VP on preoperative CT scans, non-VP (n = 42) and VP (n = 68). Radiologic and clinical outcomes, including back and leg pain assessed using the visual analogue scale (VAS), the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), and the EuroQol-5 Dimension (Eq5D), were compared pre- and postoperatively over a 2-year follow-up period. Results : Preoperatively, the VP group exhibited significantly greater leg pain ( p = 0.010), while no significant differences were observed in back pain or the ODI between the groups. In the non-VP group, decompression and fusion yielded similar outcomes, with decompression showing a better ODI score at 1 month ( p = 0.018). In contrast, in the VP group, patients who underwent fusion showed significantly improved long-term leg pain outcomes compared to those who underwent decompression at both 1-year ( p = 0.042) and 2-year ( p = 0.017) follow-ups. Conclusions : The VP may indicate segmental instability and may play a role in the persistence of radiculopathy. Fusion surgery appears to offer better long-term relief in patients with the VP, whereas decompression alone is a viable option in non-VP cases. These findings suggest that the VP may be a useful factor in guiding surgical decision-making.

In this study, we analyze metal-insulator-metal (MIM) capacitors with different thicknesses of SixNy film (650 Å, 500 Å, and 400 Å) and varying levels of film quality to improve their capacitance density. SixNy thicknesses of 650 Å, 500 Å, and 400 Å are used with four different conditions, designated as MIM (N content 1.49), NEWMIM (N content 28.1), DAMANIT (N content 1.43), and NIT (N content 0.30). We divide the C-V characteristics into two categories: voltage coefficient of capacitance (VCC) and temperature coefficient of capacitance (TCC). There was an overall increase in the VCC as the thickness of the SixNy film decreased, with some variation depending on the condition. However, the TCC did not vary significantly with thickness, only with condition. At the same thickness, the NIT condition yielded the highest capacitance density, while the MIM condition showed the lowest capacitance density. This difference was due to the actual thickness of the film and the variation in its k-value depending on the condition. The most influential factor for capacitance uniformity was the thickness uniformity of the SixNy film.

Nanogenerators have garnered significant interest as environmentally friendly and potential energy-harvesting systems. Nanogenerators can be broadly classified into piezo-, tribo-, and hybrid nanogenerators. The hybrid nanogenerator used in this experiment is a nanogenerator that uses both piezo and tribo effects. These hybrid nanogenerators have the potential to be used in wearable electronics, health monitoring, IoT devices, and more. In addition, the versatility of the material application in electrospinning makes it an ideal complement to hybrid nanogenerators. However, despite their potential, several experimental variables, biocompatibility, and harvesting efficiency require improvement in the research field. In particular, maximizing the output voltage of the fibers is a significant challenge. Based on this premise, this study aims to characterize hybrid nanogenerators (HNGs) with varied structures and material combinations, with a focus on identifying HNGs that exhibit superior piezoelectric- and triboelectric-induced voltage. In this study, several HNGs based on coaxial structures were fabricated via electrospinning. PVDF-HFP and PAN, known for their remarkable electrospinning properties, were used as the primary materials. Six combinations of these two materials were fabricated and categorized into homo and hetero groups based on their composition. The output voltage of the hetero group surpassed that of the homo group, primarily because of the triboelectric-induced voltage. Specifically, the overall output voltage of the hetero group was higher. In addition, the combination group with the most favorable voltage characteristics combined PVDF-HFP@PAN(BTO) and PAN hollow, boasting an output voltage of approximately 3.5 V.

Background and Objectives: Posterior cervical foraminotomy (PCF) aims to resolve cervical radiculopathy while preserving range of motion (ROM). However, its effectiveness in maintaining ROM is uncertain. This study investigates the changes in ROM after PCF and identifies preoperative factors that influence ROM reduction post surgery. Materials and Methods: This retrospective cohort study included patients treated at our hospital from August 2016 to September 2021. Clinical outcomes were assessed using the visual analog scale (VAS) for neck and arm pain and the neck disability index (NDI). Radiological outcomes included the segmental angle (SA), cervical angle (CA), C2-C7 SVA, Pfirrmann grade, extent of facetectomy, foraminal stenosis, and ROM. Patients were categorized into two groups based on segmental ROM changes: decreased (Group D) and maintained (Group M). Radiological and clinical outcomes were compared between the groups. Univariate and multivariate regression analyses were performed to identify risk factors for ROM loss after PCF. Results: 76 patients were included: 34 in Group D and 42 in Group M, with no demographic differences. Preoperatively, Group D had significantly larger flexion segmental and cervical angles than Group M (segmental, p < 0.001; cervical, p = 0.001). Group D also had a higher Pfirrmann grade ( p = 0.014) and more bony bridge formations ( p = 0.004). While no significant differences were observed in arm pain VAS and NDI scores, Group D exhibited worse neck pain VAS at the last follow-up ( p = 0.03). Univariate linear regression indicated that preoperative segmental ROM ( p < 0.001, B = 0.82) and bony bridge formation ( p = 0.046, B = 5.33) were significant predictors of ROM loss post PCF. Conclusions: Patients with higher preoperative flexion angles and Pfirrmann grades at the operative level are at an increased risk for ROM loss and neck pain and often exhibit bony bridge formation. Accounting for these factors can improve surgical planning and patient outcomes.

We present a bioprinted three-layered airway model with a physiologically relevant microstructure for the study of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection dynamics. This model exhibited clear cell-cell junctions and mucus secretion with an efficient expression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) and transmembrane serine protease 2 (TMPRSS2). Having infected air-exposed epithelial cells in the upper layer with a minimum multiplicity of infection of 0.01, the airway model showed a marked susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 within one-day post-infection (dpi). Furthermore, the unique longevity allowed the observation of cytopathic effects and barrier degradation for 21 dpi. The in-depth transcriptomic analysis revealed dramatic changes in gene expression affecting the infection pathway, viral proliferation, and host immune response which are consistent with COVID-19 patient data. Finally, the treatment of antiviral agents, such as remdesivir and molnupiravir, through the culture medium underlying the endothelium resulted in a marked inhibition of viral replication within the epithelium. Anastomotic stricture is a typical complication of esophageal atresia surgery. Remote ischemic conditioning (RIC) has demonstrated multiorgan benefits, however, its efficacy in the esophagus remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate whether applying RIC after esophageal resection and anastomosis in rats could attenuate esophageal stricture and improve inflammation. Sixty-five male Sprague-Dawley rats were categorized into the following groups: controls with no surgery, resection and anastomosis only, resection and anastomosis with RIC once, and resection and anastomosis with RIC twice. RIC included three cycles of hind-limb ischemia followed by reperfusion. Inflammatory markers associated with the interleukin 6/Janus kinase/ signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (IL-6/JAK/STAT3) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha/nuclear factor-κB (TNF-α/NF-kB) signaling pathways were evaluated with RNA and protein works. The RIC groups showed significantly lower stricture rates, lower inflammatory markers levels than the resection and anastomosis-only group. The RIC groups had significantly lower IL-6 and TNFa levels than the resection and anastomosis-only group, confirming the inhibitory role of remote ischemic conditioning in the IL-6/JAK/STAT3 and TNF-α/NF-kB signaling pathways. Background: IA-0130 is a derivative of 3-(1,3-diarylallylidene)oxindoles, which is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM). A previous study demonstrated that SERM exhibits anti-inflammatory effects on colitis by promoting the anti-inflammatory phenotype of monocytes in murine colitis. However, the therapeutic effects of oxindole on colitis remain unknown. Therefore, we evaluated the efficacy of IA-0130 on dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced mouse colitis., Methods: The DSS-induced colitis mouse model was established by administration of 2.5% DSS for 5 days. Mice were orally administered with IA-0130 (0.01 mg/kg or 0.1 mg/kg) or cyclosporin A (CsA; 30 mg/kg). Body weight, disease activity index score and colon length of mice were calculated and histological features of mouse colonic tissues were analyzed using hematoxylin and eosin staining. The expression of inflammatory cytokines and tight junction (TJ) proteins were analyzed using quantitative real-time PCR and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The expression of interleukin-6 (IL-6) signaling molecules in colonic tissues were investigated using Western blotting and immunohistochemistry (IHC)., Results: IA-0130 (0.1 mg/kg) and CsA (30 mg/kg) prevented colitis symptom, including weight loss, bleeding, colon shortening, and expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in colon tissues. IA-0130 treatment regulated the mouse intestinal barrier permeability and inhibited abnormal TJ protein expression. IA-0130 down-regulated IL-6 expression and prevented the phosphorylation of signaling molecules in colonic tissues., Conclusions: This study demonstrated that IA-0130 suppressed colitis progression by inhibiting the gp130 signaling pathway and expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and maintaining TJ integrity., (© 2024. Objective: Radiotherapy is one of the important treatment options for metastatic spinal tumors but is not the definite intervention in all cases, as there are patients who still require surgical treatment because of severe pain or neurologic events after this treatment. We evaluated the perioperative effects of preoperative radiotherapy in these cases as a future guide for surgeons on critical considerations in this period., Methods: We included 328 patients in this study who had undergone decompression and fusion surgery for metastatic spinal tumors. Patients who underwent surgery with preoperative radiotherapy were designated as the radiotherapy group (group RT, n = 81), and cases of surgery without preoperative radiotherapy were assigned to the non-radiotherapy group (group nRT, n = 247). We compared the demographic, intraoperative, and postoperative factors between these 2 groups., Results: In terms of intraoperative factors, statistically significant differences were evident in operation time, estimated blood loss, and transfusion (RT vs. nRT: 188.1 ± 80.7 minutes vs. 231.2 ± 106.1 minutes, 607.2 ± 532.7 mL vs. 830.1 ± 1324.7 mL, and 30.9% vs. 43.3%, P < 0.001, P < 0.031, and P < 0.048, respectively). With regard to postoperative factors, the incidence of infection, wound problems, and local recurrence were statistically higher in group RT (RT vs. nRT: 6.2% vs. 0.8%, 12.3% vs. 0.8%, 23.4% vs. 13.7%, P = 0.004, P < 0.001, and P = 0.038, respectively)., Conclusions: Preoperative radiotherapy has the intraoperative advantages of reducing bleeding and shortening the operating time, but postoperative caution is needed because of the possibility of infection, wound problems, and local recurrence increases., (Copyright © 2024 Elsevier Inc. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease characterized by joint inflammation and swelling. Several studies have demonstrated that RA fibroblast-like synovial cells (RA-FLS) play an important role in RA pathogenesis. Activated RA-FLS contribute to synovial inflammation by secreting inflammatory cytokines including interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α. LMT-28 is derivative of oxazolidone and exerts anti-inflammatory effects on RA via IL-6 signaling pathway regulation. LMT-28 also regulates T cell differentiation in RA condition. However, the effect of LMT-28 on the migration and invasion of RA-FLS remains unknown. Kaempferol has been reported to have pharmacological effects on various diseases, such as inflammatory diseases, autoimmune diseases, and cancer. Additionally, kaempferol has been reported to inhibit RA-FLS migration and invasion, but it is not known about the therapeutic mechanism including molecular mechanism such as receptor. The present study aimed to investigate the synergistic effects of the combined treatment of LMT-28 and kaempferol on RA-FLS activation and RA pathogenesis in mouse model. LMT-28 and kaempferol co-administration inhibited RA disease severity and histological collapse in the joint tissues of CIA mice, as well as downregulated the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines in mouse serum. Additionally, the combined treatment inhibited excessive differentiation of T helper 17 cells and osteoclasts. Furthermore, compared with single treatments, combined treatment showed enhanced inhibitory effects on the hyperactivation of IL-6-induced signaling pathway in RA-FLS. Combined treatment also inhibited RA-FLS cell proliferation, migration, and invasion and suppressed the expression of matrix metalloproteinase in RA-FLS. Furthermore, we confirmed that the combined treatment inhibited chondrocyte proliferation, migration, and invasion. In conclusion, our results suggest that the combined treatment of LMT-28 and kaempferol exerts a synergistic effect on the RA development via the regulation of IL-6-induced hyperactivation of RA-FLS. With the gradual miniaturization of electronic devices and the increasing interest in wearable devices, flexible microelectronics is being actively studied. Owing to the limitations of existing battery systems corresponding to miniaturization, there is a need for flexible alternative power sources. Accordingly, energy harvesting from surrounding environmental systems using fluorinated polymers with piezoelectric properties has received significant attention. Among them, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and PVDF co-polymers have been researched as representative organo-piezoelectric materials because of their excellent piezoelectric properties, mechanical flexibility, thermal stability, and light weight. Electrospinning is an effective method for fabricating nanofibrous meshes with superior surface-to-volume ratios from polymer solutions. During electrospinning, the polymer solution is subjected to mechanical stretching and in situ poling, corresponding to an external strong electric field. Consequently, the fraction of the piezoelectric β-phase in PVDF can be improved by the electrospinning process, and enhanced harvesting output can be realized. An overview of electrospun piezoelectric fibrous meshes composed of PVDF or PVDF co-polymers to be utilized is presented, and the recent progress in enhancement methods for harvesting output, such as fiber alignment, doping with various nanofillers, and coaxial fibers, is discussed. Additionally, other applications of these meshes as sensors are reviewed.

Background: Health care workers (HCWs) face a higher risk of infection and may transmit pathogens to patients during a pandemic. This study aims to evaluate infection-control measures by analyzing the incidence and risk factors of COVID-19 and estimating vaccine effectiveness (VE) at a tertiary hospital in Seoul, Republic of Korea., Methods: This study included 2,516 HCWs from January 1, 2020, to June 30, 2022. Data were analyzed to determine the incidence density and cumulative incidence; the results were compared by the age- and gender-specific standardized incidence ratios (SIR). VE was estimated with multivariate Cox proportional-hazard models as 1-adjusted hazard ratio × 100%., Results: SIR indicated a lower COVID-19 risk in the hospital population than in the general Korean population (SIR, 0.81; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.76-0.87). Multivariate Cox analysis indicated that, compared to doctors, nonmedical service supporters and other HCWs (excluding doctors and nurses) were high-risk groups (adjusted hazard ratio [95% CI], 1.72 [1.04-2.83] and 1.76 [1.20-2.58], respectively). Compared to the outpatient unit, the emergency department was a high-risk department (1.70 [1.16-2.50]). Background: Several patients complained of residual symptoms following lumbar decompressive surgery for lumbar degenerative disease (LDD). However, few studies analyze this dissatisfaction by focusing on preoperative patients' symptoms. This study was conduct to determine the factors that could predict the patients' postoperative complaints by focusing on their preoperative symptoms., Methods: Four hundred and seventeen consecutive patients who underwent lumbar decompression and fusion surgery for LDD were included. Postoperative complaint was defined by at least twice same complaint during the outpatient follow-up of 6,12, 18 and 24 months after surgery. A comparative analysis was performed between complaint group (group C, N = 168) and non-complaint group (group NC, N = 249). Demographic, operative, symptomatic, and clinical factors were compared between the groups by univariate and multivariate analyses., Results: The main preoperative chief complaints were radiating pain (318/417, 76.2%). However, most common postoperative complaint was residual radiating pain (60/168, 35.7%) followed by tingling sensation (43/168, 25.6%). The presence of psychiatric disease (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 4.666; P = 0.017), longer pain duration (aOR, 1.021; P < 0.001), pain to below the knee (aOR, 2.326; P = 0.001), preoperative tingling sensation (aOR, 2.631; P < 0.001), preoperative sensory and motor power decrease (aOR, 2.152 and 1.678; P = 0,047 and 0.011, respectively) were significantly correlated with postoperative patients' complaints in multivariate analysis., Conclusions: The postoperative patients' complaints could be predicted and explained in advance by checking the preoperative characteristics of patients' symptoms, including the duration and site carefully. Background Context: Patients scheduled for L4-5 PLIF often have FS at L5-S1. However, data on the clinical and radiographic outcomes of cases with mild-to-moderate L5-S1 FS are lacking, which may affect clinical outcomes or require additional surgery after L4-5 fusion., Purpose: To evaluate the clinical and radiographic outcomes of L4-5 PLIF in patients with and without mild-to-moderate L5-S1 FS, with a primary focus on the association between L5-S1 FS and postoperative clinical outcomes including back pain, leg pain, and scores on the oswestry disability index (ODI) and EuroQol 5-dimension (EQ-5D)., Study Design: Retrospective comparative study., Patient Sample: A retrospective review of patients who underwent L4-5 PLIF from 2014 to 2018. The patients were divided according to the presence of mild-to-moderate FS at L5-S1., Outcome Measures: Clinical assessment included the pain visual analog scale (VAS), ODI, and EQ-5D score. Radiographic assessments included spinopelvic parameters and grades for central and foraminal stenosis., Methods: Clinical outcomes were assessed using validated outcome measures at preoperative, 6-month, 12-month, and 36-month follow-up visits. Radiographic evaluations were performed using preoperative and postoperative radiographs. Foraminal stenosis was assessed qualitatively using MRI with a grading system from none to severe and quantitatively by measuring changes in the foraminal area on CT., Results: Among 186 patients, 55 were categorized as the FS group and 131 as the non-FS group. The FS group was older (p=0.039) and had more severe central stenosis at L5-S1 (p=0.007) as well as more severe FS at both L4-5 and L5-S1 (both p<0.001). Preoperative disc height (p<0.001), C7-S1 sagittal vertical axis (p=0.003), lumbar lordosis (p=0.005), and pelvic incidence-lumbar lordosis mismatch (p=0.026) were more aggravated in the FS group. The FS group showed inferior clinical outcomes at the final follow-up in terms of back pain (p=.010) and ODI score (p=.003)., Conclusion: The presence of mild-to-moderate FS at L5-S1 was associated with more aggravated sagittal balance in terms of smaller preoperative disc height, larger sagittal vertical axis, smaller lumbar lordosis, and larger pelvic incidence-lumbar lordosis mismatch. Patients with L5-S1 FS also had poorer clinical outcomes including back pain and ODI score after L4-5 PLIF. Purpose: Tuberculosis (TB) is linked to sustained inflammation even after treatment, and fracture risk is higher in TB survivors than in the general population. However, no individualized fracture risk prediction model exists for TB survivors. We aimed to estimate fracture risk, identify fracture-related factors, and develop an individualized risk prediction model for TB survivors., Methods: TB survivors ( n  = 44,453) between 2010 and 2017 and 1:1 age- and sex-matched controls were enrolled. One year after TB diagnosis, the participants were followed-up until the date of fracture, death, or end of the study period (December 2018). Cox proportional hazard regression analyses were performed to compare the fracture risk between TB survivors and controls and to identify fracture-related factors among TB survivors., Results: During median 3.4 (interquartile range, 1.6-5.3) follow-up years, the incident fracture rate was significantly higher in TB survivors than in the matched controls (19.3 vs. 14.6 per 1,000 person-years, p  < 0.001). Even after adjusting for potential confounders, TB survivors had a higher risk for all fractures (adjusted hazard ratio 1.27 [95% confidence interval 1.20-1.34]), including hip (1.65 [1.39-1.96]) and vertebral (1.35 [1.25-1.46]) fractures, than matched controls. Fracture-related factors included pulmonary TB, female sex, older age, heavy alcohol consumption, reduced exercise, and a higher Charlson Comorbidity Index ( p  < 0.05). The individualized fracture risk model showed good discrimination (concordance statistic = 0.678)., Conclusion: TB survivors have a higher fracture risk than matched controls. IL-1β is an important cytokine implicated in the progression of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and intestinal barrier dysfunction. The polyphenolic compound, geraniin, possesses bioactive properties, such as antitumor, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antihypertensive, and antiviral activities; however, its IL-1β-targeted anticolitis activity remains unclear. Here, we evaluated the inhibitory effect of geraniin in IL-1β-stimulated Caco-2 cells and a dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis mouse model. Geraniin blocked the interaction between IL-1β and IL-1R by directly binding to IL-1β and inhibited the IL-1β activity. It suppressed IL-1β-induced intestinal tight junction damage in human Caco-2 cells by inhibiting IL-1β-mediated MAPK, NF-kB, and MLC activation. Moreover, geraniin administration effectively reduced colitis symptoms and attenuated intestinal barrier injury in mice by suppressing elevated intestinal permeability and restoring tight junction protein expression through the inhibition of MAPK, NF-kB, and MLC activation. Thus, geraniin exhibits anti-IL-1β activity and anticolitis effect by hindering the IL-1β and IL-1R interaction and may be a promising therapeutic anti-IL-1β agent for IBD treatment.

Degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM) is a leading cause of disability, and its surgical management is crucial for improving patient neurological outcomes. Given the varied presentations and severities of DCM, treatment options are diverse. Surgeons often face challenges in selecting the most appropriate surgical approach because there is no universally correct answer. This narrative review aimed to aid the decision-making process in treating DCM by presenting a structured treatment algorithm. The authors categorized surgical scenarios based on an algorithm, outlining suitable treatment methods for each case. Four primary scenarios were identified based on the number of levels requiring surgery and K-line status: (1) K-line (+) and ≤3 levels, (2) K-line (+) and ≥3 levels, (3) K-line (-) and ≤3 levels, and (4) K-line (-) and ≥3 levels. This categorization aids in determining the appropriateness of anterior or posterior approaches and the necessity for fusion, considering the surgical level and K-line status. The complexity of surgical situations and diversity of treatment methods for DCM can be effectively managed using an algorithmic approach. Furthermore, surgical techniques that minimize the stages and address challenging conditions could enhance treatment outcomes in DCM.

Background/objectives: Obesity is a major cause of metabolic disorders; to prevent obesity, research is ongoing to develop natural and safe ingredients with few adverse effects. In this study, we determined the anti-obesity effects of Rosa multiflora root extract (KWFD-H01) in 3T3-L1 adipocytes and Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats., Materials/methods: The anti-obesity effects of KWFD-H01in 3T3-L1 adipocytes and SD rats were examined using various assays, including Oil Red O staining, gene expression analyses, protein expression analyses, and blood biochemical analyses., Results: KWFD-H01 reduced intracellular lipid accumulation and inhibited the mRNA expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ), cytidine-cytidine-adenosine-adenosine-thymidine (CCAAT)/enhancer binding proteins (C/EBPα), sterol regulatory element-binding transcription factor 1 (SREBP-1c), acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC), and fatty acid synthase (FAS) in 3T3-L1 cells. KWFD-H01 also reduced body weight, weight gain, and the levels of triglycerides, total and LDL-cholesterol, glucose, and leptin, while increasing high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol and adiponectin in SD rats. Background: Rituximab is an essential induction immunosuppressant for ABO-incompatible kidney transplantation (KT) (ABOi-KT). However, studies on the optimal dose of rituximab are insufficient, and there are dosage differences between transplant centers and countries. Therefore, we conducted a study to determine the survival outcomes of patients receiving the most effective and safe dose of rituximab during ABOi-KT., Methods: Studies on rituximab dose were divided into four groups: ABO compatible, 1) placebo, 2) rituximab 200 mg, 3) rituximab 200-500 mg, and 4) rituximab 500 mg. We searched the CENTRAL, MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Science Citation Index Expanded databases from 1970 to February 2022.9 . The inclusion criteria were adult patients (>18 years old). Reviews, observational studies, and clinical trials that did not clearly define outcomes or that did not have graft failure as an outcome were excluded. We performed direct and indirect network meta-analyses using Bayesian models and ranked different rituximab doses using a generation mixed treatment comparison (GeMTC) and Stata version 13. The NMA approach was evaluated using the GRADE framework, which specifies four levels of certainty for a given result: high, moderate, low, and very low. The outcomes included patient survival, graft failure, and bacterial and viral infections., Results: Twenty-five trials, including 5,378 subjects, were divided into the following four groups: 1) placebo, 2) rituximab 200 mg, 3) rituximab 200-500 mg, and 4) rituximab 500 mg. We focused on survival outcomes according to the dose of rituximab when patients received induction therapy for ABOi-KT. The mortality rate was significantly lower in the ABO-compatible and rituximab 200 mg groups (odds ratio [OR] 0.27, 95% CrI: 0.071-0.91 and OR 0.14, 95% CrI 0.036-0.47), compared with that in the placebo group., Conclusions: We found that low-dose rituximab in ABO-i KT was effective compared to the high-dose and placebo in maintaining the survival rate. However, large-scale and long-term data are necessary for further validation of our findings. The present retrospective study investigated the clinical features and prognosis of secondary hematological malignancies (SHMs) in patients with sarcoma at Korea Cancer Center Hospital (Seoul, South Korea). Patients who had been diagnosed with SHMs after having received treatment for sarcoma between January 2000 and May 2023 were enrolled. Clinical data were collected from the patients' medical records. Clinical characteristics were analyzed, including SHM incidence, type and prognosis. Of 2,953 patients with sarcoma, 18 (0.6%) were diagnosed with SHMs. Their median age at the time of sarcoma diagnosis was 39.5 (range, 9-72) years, and 74% (n=14) of these patients were male. The histological features of sarcoma varied, with osteosarcoma diagnosed in nine patients (50%). All patients with sarcoma underwent surgical treatment, and 16 (88.8%) received chemotherapy. The most common type of SHMs was acute myeloid leukemia (n=6; 33.3%), followed by myelodysplastic syndrome (n=5; 27.7%). The median latency period between the sarcoma diagnosis and SHM identification was 30 (range, 11-121) months. A total of 13 (72.2%) patients received treatment for the SHM. The median overall survival after SHM diagnosis was 15.7 (range, 0.4-154.9) months. The incidence of SHMs in sarcoma in the present study was consistent with that reported previously. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between radiological indices of shoulder balance (SB) and cosmetic indices of shoulder deformity in patients with Lenke type 2 adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) and to determine the extent to which patient-reported outcomes (PROs) correlate with these measurements. Current management decisions and outcomes for SB in AIS are primarily based on radiological measurements. It is crucial to understand how these radiological parameters and cosmetic indices relate to patient satisfaction., Methods: The authors analyzed the preoperative radiological and photographic indices of SB, along with PROs, in patients with Lenke type 2 AIS. Lateral SB parameters included the radiological shoulder height (RSH) and clavicle angle, while medial SB parameters included the first rib angle and T1 tilt angle. Photographic indices included the shoulder height angle (SHA), axilla height angle (AHA), and the left/right trapezius angle (LRTA) ratio. The authors assessed the self-image, mental health, and total score domains of the Korean version of the 22-item Scoliosis Research Society questionnaire., Results: In their analysis of Lenke type 2 patients, the authors found that correlation coefficients between radiological measurements and photographic indices ranged from -0.25 to 0.47, among which only lateral SB including clavicle angle and RSH showed a significant correlation with anterior and posterior photographic indices. No statistically significant correlations were found between radiological measurements and PROs. Anterior photographic indices including SHA and AHA significantly correlated with all three PROs (p < 0.05)., Conclusions: Radiological shoulder parameters did not accurately reflect the perceived SB. Anterior photographic indices were reliable for evaluating clinical SB in patients with Lenke type 2 AIS and correlated with PROs. Spine surgeons may benefit from paying more attention to anterior photographic indices when making surgical decisions regarding clinical SB.

Purpose: The aim in this study was to investigate the diet and nutritional knowledge of elite Korean wrestlers and verify the differences in their exercise performance , muscle damage indicators, and antioxidant enzyme levels according to wrestler level., Methods: A 7-day dietary and nutrition knowledge survey was administered to 30 adult male elite wrestlers (national team: n=11; professional team: n=19). The Wingate test was conducted for 60 seconds to analyze muscle damage indicators and antioxidant levels. Blood and blood lactate concentration analyses were performed four times; the statistical significance level of all data was p<0.05., Results: Significant differences were found in general nutrition knowledge questionnaire (GNKQ) scores (p=0.043), diet (p=0.001), anaerobic performance (p=0.001), muscle damage indicators (p=0.026), antioxidant levels, and blood lactic acid concentrations (30 min after exercise, p=0.007; 90 min after exercise, p=0.038) between the national and the professional groups., Conclusion: To the findings confirm the relationship between the differences in diet, nutrition, and motor function for wrestlers of different expertise levels. In a follow-up, a comprehensive study on nutrition knowledge, athlete training , and weight loss is needed that considers a wider scope of subjects and analyzes additional variables.

Objective: Even minor sacral slanting can influence T1 tilt and shoulder balance. Yet, the relationship between sacral slanting and postoperative shoulder imbalance (PSI) has not been previously explored. To determine risk factors for PSI in Lenke 2A adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients, with an emphasis on sacral slanting., Methods: The study encompassed 96 consecutive patients who had undergone posterior correction and fusion surgery for Lenke type 2A AIS. Patients were grouped into PSI(+) and PSI(-) based on postoperative outcomes. Additionally, they were classified into left-sided slanting, no slanting, and right-sided slanting groups according to the degree of sacral slanting. Various radiological measures were compared., Results: Patients in the PSI(+) group exhibited a smaller preoperative proximal thoracic curve and a higher main thoracic curve correction rate than those in the PSI(-) group. The presence or absence of sacral slanting did not exhibit a significant variation in PSI occurrence. However, the right-sided sacral slanting group showed a larger delta radiologic shoulder height compared to the other 2 groups (7.1 mm vs. 1.5 & 3.3 mm)., Conclusion: Sacral slanting was not directly linked to the development of PSI. Despite the common postoperative elevation of the left shoulder, the shoulder height differences decreased over the follow-up period. Especially in cases with a right-sided tilted sacrum, the PSI demonstrated progressive improvement, with an associated increase in the rightward distal wedging angle, leading to distal adding-on.

New supplements with preventive effects against skin photodamage are receiving increasing attention. This study evaluated the anti-photoaging effects of salmon nasal cartilage proteoglycan (SPG), acting as a functional material for skin health. We administered SPG to in vitro and in vivo models exposed to ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation and assessed its moisturizing and anti-wrinkle effects on dorsal mouse skin and keratinocytes and dermal fibroblasts cell lines. These results showed that SPG restored the levels of filaggrin, involucrin, and AQP3 in the epidermis of UVB-irradiated dorsal skin and keratinocytes, thereby enhancing the keratinization process and water flow. Additionally, SPG treatment increased the levels of hyaluronan and skin ceramide, the major components of intercellular lipids in the epidermis. Furthermore, SPG treatment significantly increased the levels of collagen and procollagen type 1 by down-regulating matrix metalloproteinase 1, which play a crucial role in skin fibroblasts, in both in vitro and in vivo models. In addition, SPG strongly inhibited mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPKs) signaling, the including extracellular signal-regulated kinase, c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), and p38. These findings suggest that dietary SPG may be an attractive functional food for preventing UVB-induced photoaging. And this SPG product may provide its best benefit when treating several signs of skin photoaging.

Objective: Recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) is effective for promoting robust fusion for long-level cervical deformity and revision surgeries. However, only a few studies have reported its efficacy and complications in posterior cervical fusion (PCF)., Methods: Therefore we evaluated the efficacy and complications of rhBMP-2 application in PCF surgery by searching 3 electronic databases (PubMed, Cochrane Database, and EMBASE) for studies that evaluated the use of rhBMP-2 in PCF. Five studies (1 prospective and 4 retrospective) were included in the meta-analysis., Results: The quality of each study was assessed, and data on pseudarthrosis, wound infection, neurologic, and immediate medical complications were extracted and analyzed. We found that the use of rhBMP-2 in PCF showed significant benefits in terms of pseudarthrosis and no significant increases in the risk for neurologic and immediate medical complications regardless of the dose. However, high-dose (>2.1 mg/level) rhBMP-2 was a risk factor for wound infection after PCF., Conclusions: Our meta-analysis of the currently available literature suggests that patients with PCF may benefit from BMP-2 usage without increasing the risk of complications. Meju is a traditional Korean soybean brick characterized by diverse microbial communities. The microbial communities in Meju were identified at the phylum and genus levels using high-throughput sequencing. During Meju fermentation, diverse factors such as total bacterial cell numbers, moisture content, salinity, pH, enzyme activities, and free amino acids were monitored. After 30 days of fermentation, microbial adaptation and increased protease activity resulted in significant changes, including an increase in pH and alterations in free amino acid content by day 70. Bacterial community analysis revealed significant changes in Bacillus , Lactococcus , and Enterococcus levels as fermentation progressed. The decrease in pH during fermentation was influenced by lactic acid bacteria, which affected bacterial dynamics. At the end of fermentation, the fungal community was dominated by Monascus , Aspergillus , and Scopulariopsis , which affected the free amino acid levels. Post-tetanic Ca2+ release from mitochondria produces presynaptic residual calcium, which contributes to post-tetanic potentiation. The loss of mitochondria-dependent post-tetanic potentiation is one of the earliest signs of Alzheimer's model mice. Post-tetanic potentiation at intracortical synapses of medial prefrontal cortex has been implicated in working memory. Although mitochondrial contribution to post-tetanic potentiation differs depending on synapse types, it is unknown which synapse types express mitochondria-dependent post-tetanic potentiation in the medial prefrontal cortex. We studied expression of mitochondria-dependent post-tetanic potentiation at different intracortical synapses of the rat medial prefrontal cortex. Post-tetanic potentiation occurred only at intracortical synapses onto layer 5 corticopontine cells from commissural cells and L2/3 pyramidal neurons. Among post-tetanic potentiation-expressing synapses, L2/3-corticopontine synapses in the prelimbic cortex were unique in that post-tetanic potentiation depends on mitochondria because post-tetanic potentiation at corresponding synapse types in other cortical areas was independent of mitochondria. Supporting mitochondria-dependent post-tetanic potentiation at L2/3-to-corticopontine synapses, mitochondria-dependent residual calcium at the axon terminals of L2/3 pyramidal neurons was significantly larger than that at commissural and corticopontine cells. Moreover, post-tetanic potentiation at L2/3-corticopontine synapses, but not at commissural-corticopontine synapses, was impaired in the young adult Alzheimer's model mice. Olfactory dysfunction is associated with conditions such as neurodegenerative diseases, diabetes, obesity, autoimmune diseases, mental illnesses, and upper-airway-related diseases. The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated the development of an examiner-independent olfactory function test. We recently developed a digital olfactory function test called Digitalscent (DIGITAL SCENT), which is a kiosk-type device with an integrated hardware system. The protocol follows conventional psychophysical olfactory function protocols, including threshold, discrimination, and identification test subsets. Eight healthy participants without olfactory dysfunction volunteered for the suitability test and completed both the YSK olfactory function and Digitalscent tests. Pearson correlations were determined between the YSK olfactory function and Digitalscent tests. Digitalscent could be implemented as a conventional olfactory function test, and all participants followed the Digitalscent test protocols. Limitations in the threshold and identification test subsets included unfamiliarity of the patients to the digital test and incompleteness in the sophisticated release of odorants. A strength of the identification test subset was the dual sensory stimulation of vision and olfaction. Digitalscent could-without facilitating viral transmission-enable early diagnosis of olfactory dysfunction during respiratory viral pandemics. Future studies with larger sample sizes are warranted to facilitate wider use of this digital olfactory function test.
