We present a catalog of stellar parameters (effective temperature $T_{\rm eff}$, surface gravity $\log g$, age, and metallicity [Fe/H]) and elemental-abundance ratios ([C/Fe], [Mg/Fe], and [$\alpha$/Fe]) for some five million stars (4.5 million dwarfs and 0.5 million giants stars) in the Milky Way, based on stellar colors from the Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey (J-PLUS) DR3 and \textit{Gaia} EDR3. These estimates are obtained through the construction of a large spectroscopic training set with parameters and abundances adjusted to uniform scales, and trained with a Kernel Principal Component Analysis. Owing to the seven narrow/medium-band filters employed by J-PLUS, we obtain precisions in the abundance estimates that are as good or better than derived from medium-resolution spectroscopy for stars covering a wide range of the parameter space: 0.10-0.20 dex for [Fe/H] and [C/Fe], and 0.05 dex for [Mg/Fe] and [$\alpha$/Fe]. Moreover, systematic errors due to the influence of molecular carbon bands on previous photometric-metallicity estimates (which only included two narrow/medium-band blue filters) have now been removed, resulting in photometric-metallicity estimates down to [Fe/H] $\sim -4.0$, with typical uncertainties of 0.25 dex and 0.40 dex for dwarfs and giants, respectively. Chemical anomalies in planet-hosting stars (PHSs) are studied in order to assess how the planetary nature and multiplicity affect the atmospheric chemical abundances of their host stars. We employ APOGEE DR17 to select thin-disk stars of the Milky Way, and cross-match them with the Kepler Input Catalog to identify confirmed PHSs, which results in 227 PHSs with available chemical-abundance ratios for six refractory elements. We also examine an ensemble of stars without planet signals, which are equivalent to the selected PHSs in terms of evolutionary stage and stellar parameters, to correct for Galactic chemical-evolution effects, and derive the abundance gradient of refractory elements over the condensation temperature for the PHSs. Using the Galactic chemical-evolution corrected abundances, we found that PHSs do not show a significant difference in abundance slope from the stars without planets. Furthermore, we examine the depletion trends of refractory elements of PHSs depending on total number of planets and their types, and find that the PHSs with giant planets are more depleted in refractory elements than those with rocky planets. Among the PHSs with rocky planets, the refractory-depletion trends are potentially correlated with the terrestrial planets' radii and multiplicity. In the cases of PHSs with giant planets, sub-Jovian PHSs demonstrated more depleted refractory trends than stars hosting Jovian-mass planets, raising questions on different planetary-formation processes for Neptune-like and Jupiter-like planets., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

RR Lyrae stars play a central role in tracing phase-space structures within the Milky Way because they are easy to identify, are relatively luminous, and are found in large numbers in the Galactic bulge, disk, and halo. In this work, we present a new set of spectroscopic metallicity calibrations that use the equivalent widths of the Ca II K and Balmer H-gamma and H-delta lines to calculate metallicity values from low-resolution spectra. This builds on an earlier calibration from Layden by extending the range of equivalent widths which map between Ca II K and the Balmer lines. We have developed the software rrlfe to apply this calibration to spectra in a consistent, reproducible, and extensible manner. This software is open-source and available to the community. Photometric stellar surveys now cover a large fraction of the sky, probe to fainter magnitudes than large-scale spectroscopic surveys, and are relatively free from the target-selection biases often associated with such studies. Photometric-metallicity estimates that include narrow/medium-band filters can achieve comparable accuracy and precision to existing low-resolution spectroscopic surveys such as SDSS/SEGUE and LAMOST. Here we report on an effort to identify likely members of the Galactic disk system among the very metal-poor (VMP; [Fe/H] $\leq$ --2) and extremely metal-poor (EMP; [Fe/H] $\leq$ --3) stars. Our analysis is based on an initial sample of $\sim11.5$ million stars with full space motions selected from the SkyMapper Southern Survey (SMSS) and Stellar Abundance and Galactic Evolution Survey (SAGES). After applying a number of quality cuts to obtain the best available metallicity and dynamical estimates, we analyze a total of $\sim$5.86 million stars in the combined SMSS/SAGES sample. We employ two techniques that, depending on the method, identify between 876 and 1,476 VMP stars (6.9%-11.7% of all VMP stars) and between 40 and 59 EMP stars (12.4%-18.3% of all EMP stars) that appear to be members of the Galactic disk system on highly prograde orbits (v$_{\phi} > 150$ km/s). The total number of candidate VMP/EMP disk-like stars is 1,496, the majority of which have low orbital eccentricities, ecc $\le 0.4$; many have ecc $\le 0.2$. The large fractions of VMP/EMP stars associated with the Milky Way disk system strongly suggest the presence of an early forming ``primordial" disk., Comment: It is now accepted to the ApJS

We employ a sample of 135,873 RR Lyrae stars (RRLs) with precise photometric-metallicity and distance estimates from the newly calibrated $P$--$\phi_{31}$--$R_{21}$--[Fe/H] and $Gaia$ $G$-band $P$--$R_{21}$--[Fe/H] absolute magnitude-metallicity relations of Li et al., combined with available proper motions from $Gaia$ EDR3, and 6955 systemic radial velocities from $Gaia$ DR3 and other sources, in order to explore the chemistry and kinematics of the halo of the Milky Way (MW). This sample is ideally suited for characterization of the inner- and outer-halo populations of the stellar halo, free from the bias associated with spectroscopically selected probes, and for estimation of their relative contributions as a function of Galactocentric distance. The results of a Gaussian Mixture-Model analysis of these contributions are broadly consistent with other observational studies of the halo, and with expectations from recent MW simulation studies. We apply the HDBSCAN clustering method to the specific energies and cylindrical actions ($E$, J$_{r}$, J$_{\phi}$, J$_{z}$), identifying 97 Dynamically Tagged Groups (DTGs) of RRLs, and explore their associations with recognized substructures of the MW. The precise photometric-distance determinations ($\delta\, d/d < 5$\%), and the resulting high-quality determination of dynamical parameters, yield highly statistically significant (low) dispersions of [Fe/H] for the stellar members of the DTGs compared to random draws from the full sample, indicating that they share common star-formation and chemical histories, influenced by their birth environments., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, submitted to MNRAS

We present precise photometric estimates of stellar parameters, including effective temperature, metallicity, luminosity classification, distance, and stellar age, for nearly 26 million stars using the methodology developed in the first paper of this series, based on the stellar colors from the Stellar Abundances and Galactic Evolution Survey (SAGES) DR1 and Gaia EDR3. The optimal design of stellar-parameter sensitive $uv$ filters by SAGES has enabled us to determine photometric-metallicity estimates down to $-3.5$, similar to our previous results with the SkyMapper Southern Survey (SMSS), yielding a large sample of over five million metal-poor (MP; [Fe/H]$\le -1.0$) stars and nearly one million very metal-poor (VMP; [Fe/H]$\le -2.0$) stars. The typical precision is around $0.1$ dex for both dwarf and giant stars with [Fe/H]$>-1.0$, and 0.15-0.25/0.3-0.4 dex for dwarf/giant stars with [Fe/H]$<-1.0$. Using the precise parallax measurements and stellar colors from Gaia, effective temperature, luminosity classification, distance and stellar age are further derived for our sample stars. We present a chemical and dynamical analysis of the leading arm (LA) and trailing arm (TA) of the Sagittarius (Sgr) stream, as well as for the Sgr dwarf galaxy core (SC), using red giant branch, main sequence, and RR Lyrae stars from large spectroscopic survey data. The different chemical properties among the LA, TA, and SC generally agree with recent studies, and can be understood by radial metallicity gradient established in the progenitor of the Sgr dwarf, followed by preferential stellar stripping from the outer part of the Sgr progenitor. One striking finding is a relatively larger fraction of low-eccentricity stars (e < 0.4) in the LA than in the TA and SC. The TA and SC exhibit very similar distributions. Considering that a tidal tail stripped off from a dwarf galaxy maintains the orbital properties of its progenitor, we expect that the e-distribution of the LA should be similar to that of the TA and SC. Thus, the disparate behavior of the e-distribution of the LA is of particular interest. Following the analysis of Vasiliev et al., we attempt to explain the different e-distribution by introducing a time-dependent perturbation of the Milky Way by the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC)'s gravitational pull, resulting in substantial evolution of the angular momentum of the LA stars to produce the low-e stars. In addition, we confirm from RR Lyrae stars with high eccentricity (e > 0.6) that the TA stars farther away from the SC are also affected by disturbances from the LMC., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

The second generation of stars in the GCs of the MW exhibit unusually high N, Na, or Al, compared to typical Galactic halo stars at similar metallicities. The halo field stars enhanced with such elements are believed to have originated in disrupted GCs or escaped from existing GCs. We identify such stars in the metallicity range -3.0 < [Fe/H] < 0.0 from a sample of ~ 36,800 giant stars observed in the SDSS and LAMOST survey, and present their dynamical properties. The N-rich population and N-normal population among our giant sample do not exhibit similarities in either in their metallicity distribution function or dynamical properties. We find that, even though the MDF of the NRP looks similar to that of the MW's GCs in the range of [Fe/H] < -1.0, our analysis of the dynamical properties does not indicate similarities between them in the same metallicity range, implying that the escaped members from existing GCs may account for a small fraction of our N-rich stars, or the orbits of the present GCs have been altered by the dynamical friction of the MW. We also find a significant increase in the fraction of N-rich stars in the halo field in the very metal-poor (VMP; [Fe/H] < -2.0) regime, comprising up to ~ 20% of the fraction of the N-rich stars below [Fe/H] = -2.5, hinting that partially or fully destroyed VMP GCs may have in some degree contributed to the Galactic halo. A more detailed dynamical analysis of the NRP reveals that our sample of N-rich stars do not share a single common origin. Although a substantial fraction of the N-rich stars seem to originate from the GCs formed in situ, more than 60% of them are not associated with those of typical Galactic populations, but probably have extragalactic origins associated with GSE, Sequoia, and Sagittarius dwarf galaxies, as well as with presently unrecognized progenitors., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, 1 table

We present stellar parameters and abundances of 13 elements for 18 very metal-poor (VMP; [Fe/H] $<$ -2.0) stars, selected as extremely metal-poor (EMP; [Fe/H] $<$ -3.0) candidates from SDSS and LAMOST survey. High-resolution spectroscopic observations were performed using GEMINI-N/GRACES. We find ten EMP stars among our candidates, and we newly identify three carbon-enhanced metal poor (CEMP) stars with [Ba/Fe] $<$ 0. Although chemical abundances of our VMP/EMP stars generally follow the overall trend of other Galactic halo stars, there are a few exceptions. One Na-rich star ([Na/Fe] = +1.14) with low [Mg/Fe] suggests a possible chemical connection with second-generation stars in a globular cluster. The progenitor of an extremely Na-poor star ([Na/Fe] = -1.02) with an enhancement of K- and Ni-abundance ratios may have undergone a distinct nucleosynthesis episode, associated with core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) having a high explosion energy. We have also found a Mg-rich star ([Mg/Fe] = +0.73) with slightly enhanced Na and extremely low [Ba/Fe], indicating that its origin is not associated with neutron-capture events. On the other hand, the origin of the lowest Mg abundance ([Mg/Fe] = -0.61) star could be explained by accretion from a dwarf galaxy, or formation in a gas cloud largely polluted by SNe Ia. We have also explored the progenitor masses of our EMP stars by comparing their chemical-abundance patterns with those predicted by Population III SNe models, and find a mass range of 10 - 26 $M_\odot$, suggesting that such stars were primarily responsible for the chemical enrichment of the early Milky Way., Comment: 29 pages, 11 figures, 8 tables, submitted to ApJ

In this work, we study the phase-space and chemical properties of Sagittarius (Sgr) stream, the tidal tails produced by the ongoing destruction of Sgr dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy, focusing on its very metal-poor (VMP; $\rm[Fe/H] < -2$) content. We combine spectroscopic and astrometric information from SEGUE and $Gaia$ EDR3, respectively, with data products from a new large-scale run of $\texttt{StarHorse}$ spectro-photometric code. Our selection criteria yields ${\sim}1600$ stream members, including ${>}200$ VMP stars. We find the leading arm ($b>0^\circ$) of Sgr stream to be more metal-poor, by ${\sim}0.2$ dex, than the trailing one ($b<0^\circ$). With a subsample of turnoff and subgiant stars, we estimate this substructure's stellar population to be ${\sim}1$ Gyr older than the thick disk's. With the aid of an $N$-body model of the Sgr system, we verify that simulated particles stripped earlier (${>}2$ Gyr ago) have present-day phase-space properties similar to lower-metallicity stream stars. Conversely, those stripped more recently (${<}2$ Gyr) are preferentially more akin to metal-rich ($\rm[Fe/H] > -1$) members of the stream. Such correlation between kinematics and chemistry can be explained by the existence of a dynamically hotter, less centrally-concentrated, and more metal-poor population in Sgr dSph prior to its disruption, implying that this galaxy was able to develop a metallicity gradient before its accretion. Finally, we discovered several carbon-enhanced metal-poor ($\rm[C/Fe] > +0.7$ and $\rm[Fe/H] \leq -1.5$) stars in Sgr stream, which is in tension with current observations of its remaining core where such objects are not found., Comment: Accepted for ApJ. We continue our series of papers on phase-space distributions of stars in the Milky Way based on photometrically derived metallicities and Gaia astrometry, with a focus on the halo-disk interface in the local volume. To exploit various photometric databases, we develop a method of empirically calibrating synthetic stellar spectra based on a comparison with observations of stellar sequences and individual stars in SDSS, SMSS, and PS1, overcoming band-specific corrections employed in our previous work. In addition, photometric zero-point corrections are derived to provide an internally consistent photometric system with a spatially uniform metallicity zero point. Using our phase-space diagrams, we find a remarkably narrow sequence in the rotational velocity ($v_\phi$) versus metallicity ([Fe/H]) space for a sample of high proper-motion stars ($>25$ mas yr$^{-1}$), which runs along Gaia Sausage/Enceladus (GSE) and the Splash sub-structures, and is linked to the disk, spanning nearly $2$ dex in [Fe/H]. Notably, a rapid increase of $v_\phi$ from a nearly zero net rotation to $\sim180$ km s$^{-1}$ in a narrow metallicity interval ($-0.6 \leq$ [Fe/H] $\leq -0.4$) suggests that some of these stars emerged quickly on a short gas-depletion time scale. Through measurements of a scale height and length, we argue that these stars are distinct from those heated dynamically by mergers. This chain of high proper-motion stars provides additional support for recent findings that suggest a starburst occurred when the young Milky Way encountered the gas-rich GSE progenitor, which eventually led to the settling of metal-enriched gas onto the disk., Comment: 39 pages, 30 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We present a chemodynamical analysis of 11,562 metal-rich, high-eccentricity halo-like main-sequence (MS) stars, which has been referred to as the Splash or Splashed Disk, selected from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST). When divided into two groups, a low-[$\alpha$/Fe] population (LAP) and a high-[$\alpha$/Fe] population (HAP), based on kinematics and chemistry, we find that they exhibit very distinct properties, indicative of different origins. From a detailed analysis of their orbital inclinations, we suggest that the HAP arises from a large fraction (~ 90%) of heated disk stars and a small fraction (~ 10%) of in situ stars from a starburst population, likely induced by interaction of the Milky Way with Gaia Sausage/Enceladus (GSE) or other early merger. The LAP comprises about half accreted stars from the GSE and half formed by the GSE-induced starburst. Our findings further imply that the Splash stars in our sample originated from at least three different mechanisms - accretion, disk heating, and a merger induced starburst.

This work presents the medium-resolution ($R \sim 1,500$) spectroscopic follow-up of 522 low-metallicity star candidates from the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS). The objects were selected from narrow-band photometry, taking advantage of the metallicity-sensitive S-PLUS colors. The follow-up observations were conducted with the Blanco and Gemini South telescopes, using the COSMOS and GMOS spectrographs, respectively. The stellar atmospheric parameters (T$_{\rm eff}$, log$g$, and [Fe/H]), as well as carbon and $\alpha$-element abundances, were calculated for the program stars in order to assess the efficacy of the color selection. Results show that $92^{+2}_{-3}\%$ of the observed stars have [Fe/H]$\leq -1.0$, $83^{+3}_{-3}\%$ have [Fe/H]$\leq -2.0$, and $15^{+3}_{-3}\%$ have [Fe/H]$\leq -3.0$, including two ultra metal-poor stars ([Fe/H]$\leq -4.0$). The 80th percentile for the metallicity cumulative distribution function of the observed sample is [Fe/H]$= -2.04$. The sample also includes 68 Carbon-Enhanced Metal-Poor (CEMP) stars. Based on the calculated metallicities, further S-PLUS, color cuts are proposed, which can increase the fractions of stars with [Fe/H]$\leq -1.0$ and $\leq -2.0$ to $98\%$ and $88\%$, respectively. Carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars comprise almost a third of stars with [Fe/H] < --2, although their origins are still poorly understood. It is highly likely that one sub-class (CEMP-$s$ stars) is tied to mass-transfer events in binary stars, while another sub-class (CEMP-no stars) are enriched by the nucleosynthetic yields of the first generations of stars. Previous studies of CEMP stars have primarily concentrated on the Galactic halo, but more recently they have also been detected in the thick disk and bulge components of the Milky Way. $Gaia$ DR3 has provided an unprecedented sample of over 200 million low-resolution ($R\approx$ 50) spectra from the BP and RP photometers. Training on the CEMP catalog from the SDSS/SEGUE database, we use XGBoost to identify the largest all-sky sample of CEMP candidate stars to date. In total, we find 58,872 CEMP star candidates, with an estimated contamination rate of 12%. When comparing to literature high-resolution catalogs, we positively identify 60-68% of the CEMP stars in the data, validating our results and indicating a high completeness rate. Our final catalog of CEMP candidates spans from the inner to outer Milky Way, with distances as close as $r \sim$ 0.8 kpc from the Galactic center, and as far as $r >$ 30 kpc. Future higher-resolution spectroscopic follow-up of these candidates will provide validations of their classification and enable investigations of the frequency of CEMP-$s$ and CEMP-no stars throughout the Galaxy, to further constrain the nature of their progenitors., Comment: 19 pages, 14 figures, accepted to MNRAS

Carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars are a unique resource for Galactic archaeology because they probe the properties of the First Stars, early chemical evolution and binary interactions at very low metallicity. Comparing the fractions and properties of CEMP stars in different Galactic environments can provide us with unique insights into the formation and evolution of the Milky Way halo and its building blocks. In this work, we investigate whether directly comparing fractions of CEMP stars from different literature samples of very metal-poor ([Fe/H] < -2.0) stars is valid. We compiled published CEMP fractions and samples of Galactic halo stars from the past 25 years, and find that they are not all consistent with each other. Focusing on giant stars, we find significant differences between various surveys when comparing their trends of [Fe/H] versus [C/Fe] and their distributions of CEMP stars. To test the role of the analysis pipelines for low-resolution spectroscopic samples, we re-analysed giant stars from various surveys with the SSPP and FERRE pipelines. We found systematic differences in [C/Fe] of ~0.1-0.4 dex, partly independent of degeneracies with the stellar atmospheric parameters. These systematics are likely due to the different pipeline approaches, different assumptions in the employed synthetic grids, and/or the comparison of different evolutionary phases. We conclude that current biases in (the analysis of) very metal-poor samples limit the conclusions one can draw from comparing different surveys. We present a method to determine nitrogen abundance ratios with respect to iron ([N/Fe]) from molecular CN-band features observed in low-resolution ($R \sim$ 2000) stellar spectra obtained by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST). Various tests are carried out to check the systematic and random errors of our technique, and the impact of signal-to-noise (S/N) ratios of stellar spectra on the determined [N/Fe]. We find that the uncertainty of our derived [N/Fe] is less than 0.3 dex for S/N ratios larger than 10 in the ranges $T_{eff}$ = [4000, 6000] K, log g = [0.0, 3.5], [Fe/H] = [--3.0, 0.0], [C/Fe] = [--1.0, +4.5], and [N/Fe] = [--1.0, +4.5], the parameter space that we are interested in to identify N-enhanced stars in the Galactic halo. A star-by-star comparison with a sample of stars with [N/Fe] estimates available from the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) also suggests a similar level of uncertainty in our measured [N/Fe], after removing its systematic error. Based on these results, we conclude that our method is able to reproduce [N/Fe] from low-resolution spectroscopic data, with an uncertainty sufficiently small to discover N-rich stars that presumably originated from disrupted Galactic globular clusters., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, submitted to JKAS

We explore the stellar content of the Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey (J-PLUS) Data Release 2 and show its potential to identify low-metallicity stars using the Stellar Parameters Estimation based on Ensemble Methods (SPEEM) pipeline. SPEEM is a tool to provide determinations of atmospheric parameters for stars and separate stellar sources from quasars, using the unique J-PLUS photometric system. The adoption of adequate selection criteria allows the identification of metal-poor star candidates suitable for spectroscopic follow-up. SPEEM consists of a series of machine learning models which uses a training sample observed by both J-PLUS and the SEGUE spectroscopic survey. The training sample has temperatures Teff between 4\,800 K and 9\,000 K; $\log g$ between 1.0 and 4.5, and $-3.1<[Fe/H]<+0.5$. The performance of the pipeline has been tested with a sample of stars observed by the LAMOST survey within the same parameter range. The average differences between the parameters of a sample of stars observed with SEGUE and J-PLUS, which were obtained with the SEGUE Stellar Parameter Pipeline and SPEEM, respectively, are $\Delta Teff\sim 41$ K, $\Delta \log g\sim 0.11$ dex, and $\Delta [Fe/H]\sim 0.09$ dex. A sample of 177 stars have been identified as new candidates with $[Fe/H]<-2.5$ and 11 of them have been observed with the ISIS spectrograph at the William Herschel Telescope. The spectroscopic analysis confirms that $64\%$ of stars have $[Fe/H]<-2.5$, including one new star with $[Fe/H]<-3.0$. SPEEM in combination with the J-PLUS filter system has shown the potential to estimate the stellar atmospheric parameters (Teff, $\log g$, and [Fe/H]). Orbital characteristics based on Gaia Early Data Release 3 astrometric parameters are analyzed for ${\sim} 4000$ metal-poor stars ([Fe/H] $\leq -0.8$) compiled from the Best $\&$ Brightest survey. Selected as metal-poor candidates based on broadband near- and far-IR photometry, $43\%$ of these stars had medium-resolution ($1200 \lesssim R \lesssim 2000$) validation spectra obtained over a seven-year campaign from $2014$ to $2020$ with a variety of telescopes. The remaining stars were chosen based on photometric metallicity determinations from the Huang et al. recalibration of the Sky Mapper Southern Survey. Dynamical clusters of these stars are obtained from the orbital energy and cylindrical actions using the \HDBSCAN ~unsupervised learning algorithm. We identify $52$ Dynamically Tagged Groups (DTGs) with between $5$ and $21$ members; $18$ DTGs have at least $10$ member stars. Milky Way (MW) substructures such as Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus, the Metal-Weak Thick-Disk, Thamnos, the Splashed Disk, and the Helmi Stream are identified. Associations with MW globular clusters are determined for $8$ DTGs; no recognized MW dwarf galaxies were associated with any of our DTGs. Previously identified dynamical groups are also associated with our DTGs, with emphasis placed on their structural determination and possible new identifications. Chemically peculiar stars are identified as members of several DTGs, with $6$ DTGs that are associated with \textit{r}-process-enhanced stars. We demonstrate that the mean carbon and $\alpha$-element abundances of our DTGs are correlated with their mean metallicity in an understandable manner. Similarly, we find that the mean metallicity, carbon, and $\alpha$-element abundances are separable into different regions of the mean rotational-velocity space.

We present a method to determine sodium-abundance ratios ([Na/Fe]) using the Na I D doublet lines in low-resolution ($R \sim$ 2000) stellar spectra. As stellar Na I D lines are blended with those produced by the interstellar medium (ISM), we developed a technique for removing the interstellar Na I D lines using the relationship between extinction, which is proportional to $E(B-V)$, and the equivalent width (EW) of the interstellar Na I D absorption lines. When measuring [Na/Fe], we also considered corrections for non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) effects. Comparisons with data from high-resolution spectroscopic surveys suggest that the expected precision of [Na/Fe] from low-resolution spectra is better than 0.3 dex for stars with [Fe/H] $>$ $-$3.0. We also present a simple application employing the estimated [Na/Fe] values for a large number of stellar spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). After classifying the SDSS stars into Na-normal, Na-high, and Na-extreme, we explore their relation to stars in Galactic globular clusters (GCs). We find that, while the Na-high SDSS stars exhibit a similar metallicity distribution function (MDF) to that of the GCs, indicating that the majority of such stars may have originated from GC debris, the MDF of the Na-normal SDSS stars follows that of typical disk and halo stars. We report on the discovery of SPLUS J210428.01-004934.2, an ultra metal-poor (UMP) star first identified from the narrow-band photometry of the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS) Data Release 1, in the SDSS Stripe 82 region. Follow-up medium- and high-resolution spectroscopy (with Gemini South and Magellan-Clay, respectively) confirmed the effectiveness of the search for low-metallicity stars using the S-PLUS narrow-band photometry. At [Fe/H]=-4.03, SPLUS J2104-0049 has the lowest detected carbon abundance, A(C)=+4.34, when compared to the 34 previously known UMP stars in the literature, which is an important constraint on its stellar progenitor and also on stellar evolution models at the lowest metallicities. Based on its chemical abundance pattern, we speculate that SPLUS J2104-0049 could be a bonafide second-generation star, formed from a gas cloud polluted by a single metal-free ~30Mo star. This discovery opens the possibility of finding additional UMP stars directly from narrow-band photometric surveys, a potentially powerful method to help complete the inventory of such peculiar objects in our Galaxy., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication on ApJ Letters

Accurate determinations of stellar parameters and distances for large complete samples of stars are keys for conducting detailed studies of the formation and evolution of our Galaxy. Here we present stellar atmospheric parameters ($T_{\rm eff}$, luminosity classifications, and [Fe/H]) estimates for some 24 million stars determined from the stellar colors of SMSS DR2 and Gaia EDR3, based on training datasets with available spectroscopic measurements from previous high/medium/low-resolution spectroscopic surveys. The number of stars with photometric-metallicity estimates is 4-5 times larger than that collected by the current largest spectroscopic survey to date - LAMOST - over the course of the past decade. External checks indicate that the precision of the photometric-metallicity estimates are quite high, comparable to or slightly better than that derived from spectroscopy, with typical values around 0.05-0.15dex for both dwarf and giant stars with [Fe/H]>$-$1.0, 0.10-0.20dex for giant stars with $-$2.0<[Fe/H]<$-$1.0. and 0.20-0.25dex for giant stars with [Fe/H]<$-$2.0, and include estimates for stars as metal-poor as [Fe/H]~$-$3.5, substantially lower than previous photometric techniques. Photometric-metallicity estimates are obtained for an unprecedented number of metal-poor stars, including a total of over three million metal-poor (MP; [Fe/H] <$-$1.0) stars, over half a million very metal-poor (VMP; [Fe/H]<$-$2.0) stars, and over 25,000 extremely metal-poor (EMP; [Fe/H]<$-$3.0) stars. Moreover, distances are determined for over 20 million stars in our sample. For the over 18 million sample stars with accurate Gaia parallaxes, stellar ages are estimated by comparing with theoretical isochrones. We present evidence that multiple accretion events are required to explain the origin of the $Gaia$-Sausage and Enceladus (GSE) structures, based on an analysis of dynamical properties of main-sequence stars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 12 and $Gaia$ Data Release 2. GSE members are selected to have eccentricity ($e$) $>$ 0.7 and [Fe/H] $<$ -1.0, and separated into low and high orbital-inclination (LOI/HOI) groups. We find that the LOI stars mainly have $e < 0.9$ and are clearly separable into two groups with prograde and retrograde motions. The LOI stars exhibit prograde motions in the inner-halo region and strong retrograde motions in the outer-halo region. We interpret the LOI stars in these regions to be stars accreted from two massive dwarf galaxies with low-inclination prograde and retrograde orbits, affected to different extents by dynamical friction due to their different orbital directions. In contrast, the majority of the HOI stars have $e > 0.9$, and exhibit a globally symmetric distribution of rotational velocities ($V_{\rm \phi}$) near zero, although there is evidence for a small retrograde motion for these stars ($V_{\rm \phi}$ $\sim$ -15 $\rm{km~s^{-1}}$) in the outer-halo region. We consider these stars to be stripped from a massive dwarf galaxy on a high-inclination orbit. We also find that the LOI and HOI stars on highly eccentric and tangential orbits with clear retrograde motions exhibit different metallicity peaks at [Fe/H] = -1.7 and -1.9, respectively, and argue that they are associated with two low-mass dwarf galaxies accreted in the outer-halo region of the Galaxy., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures; accepted for publication in ApJL

We report photometric estimates of effective temperature, $T_{\rm eff}$, metallicity, [Fe/H], carbonicity, [C/Fe], and absolute carbon abundances, $A{\rm (C)}$, for over 700,000 stars from the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS) Data Release 2, covering a substantial fraction of the equatorial Sloan Digital Sky Survey Stripe 82. We present an analysis for two stellar populations: 1) halo main-sequence turnoff stars and 2) K-dwarf stars of mass $0.58 < M/M_{\odot} <0.75$ in the Solar Neighborhood. Application of the Stellar Photometric Index Network Explorer (SPHINX) to the mixed-bandwidth (narrow- plus wide-band) filter photometry from S-PLUS produces robust estimates of the metallicities and carbon abundances in stellar atmospheres over a wide range of temperature, $4250 < T_{\rm eff} \textrm{(K)} < 7000$. The use of multiple narrow-band S-PLUS filters enables SPHINX to achieve substantially lower levels of "catastrophic failures" (large offsets in metallicity estimates relative to spectroscopic determinations) than previous efforts using a single metallicity-sensitive narrow-band filter. We constrain the exponential slope of the Milky Way's K-dwarf halo metallicity distribution function (MDF), $\lambda_{10, \textrm{[Fe/H]}} = 0.85 \pm 0.21$, over the metallicity range $-2.5 < \textrm{[Fe/H]} < -1.0$; the MDF of our local-volume K-dwarf sample is well-represented by a gamma distribution with parameters $\alpha=2.8$ and $\beta=4.2$. S-PLUS photometry obtains absolute carbon abundances with a precision of $\sim 0.35$dex for stars with $T_{\rm eff} < 6500$K. We identify 364 candidate carbon-enhanced metal-poor stars, obtain assignments of these stars into the Yoon-Beers morphological groups in the $A$(C)-[Fe/H] space, and derive the CEMP frequencies., Comment: 27 pages, 14 figures, 3 tables, Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the results of spectroscopic follow-up for 1897 low-metallicity star candidates, selected from the Best & Brightest (B&B) Survey, carried out with the GMOS-N/S (Gemini North/South telescopes) and Goodman (SOAR Telescope) spectrographs. From these low-resolution ($R \sim 2000$) spectra, we estimate stellar atmospheric parameters, as well as carbon and magnesium (representative of $\alpha$ elements) abundance ratios. We confirm that $56\%$ of our program stars are metal-poor ([Fe/H] $< -1.0$), $30\%$ are very metal-poor (VMP; [Fe/H] $< -2.0$) and $2\%$ are extremely metal-poor (EMP; [Fe/H] $< -3.0$). There are 191 carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars, resulting in CEMP fractions of $19\%$ and $43\%$ for the VMP and EMP regimes, respectively. A total of 94 confirmed CEMP stars belong to Group I ($A({\rm C}) \gtrsim 7.25$) and 97 to Group II ($A({\rm C}) \lesssim 7.25$) in the Yoon-Beers $A$(C)$-$[Fe/H] diagram. Moreover, we combine these data with Gaia EDR3 astrometric information to delineate new target-selection criteria, which have been applied to the Goodman/SOAR candidates, to more than double the efficiency for identification of bona-fide VMP and EMP stars in comparison to random draws from the B&B catalog. We demonstrate that this target-selection approach can achieve success rates of $96\%$, $76\%$, $28\%$ and $4\%$ for [Fe/H] $\leq -1.5$, $\leq -2.0$, $\leq -2.5$ and $\leq -3.0$, respectively. Finally, we investigate the presence of dynamically interesting stars in our sample. We find that several VMP/EMP ([Fe/H] $\leq -2.5$) stars can be associated with either the disk system or halo substructures like Gaia-Sausage/Enceladus and Sequoia., Comment: Accepted for ApJ. We present a chemo-dynamical analysis of low-resolution ($R \sim 1300$) spectroscopy of stars from the AAOmega Evolution of Galactic Structure (AEGIS) survey, focusing on two key populations of carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars within the disk system of the Milky Way: a mildly prograde population ($L_z < 1000\,$kpc$\,$km$\,$s$^{-1}$) and a strongly prograde ($L_z > 1000\,$kpc$\,$km$\,$s$^{-1}$) population. Based on their chemical and kinematic characteristics, and on comparisons with similar populations found in the recent literature, we tentatively associate the former with an ex-situ inner-halo population originating from either the $Gaia$ Sausage or $Gaia$-Enceladus. We analyze the dynamical properties of $\sim$1500 very metal-poor (VMP; [Fe/H] $\lesssim -2.0$) halo stars, based primarily on medium-resolution spectroscopic data from the HK and Hamburg/ESO surveys. These data, collected over the past thirty years, are supplemented by a number of calibration stars and other small samples, along with astrometric information from $Gaia$ DR2. We apply a clustering algorithm to the 4-D energy-action space of the sample, and identify a set of 38 Dynamically Tagged Groups (DTGs), containing between 5 and 30 member stars. Many of these DTGs can be associated with previously known prominent substructures such as $Gaia$-Sausage/Enceladus (GSE), Sequoia, the Helmi Stream (HStr), and Thamnos. Others are associated with previously identified smaller dynamical groups of stars and streams. We identify 10 new DTGs as well, many of which have strongly retrograde orbits. We also investigate possible connections between our DTGs and $\sim$300 individual $r$-process-enhanced (RPE) stars from a recent literature compilation. We find that several of these objects have similar dynamical properties to GSE (5), the HStr (4), Sequoia (1), and Rg5 (1), indicating that their progenitors might have been important sources of RPE stars in the Galaxy. Additionally, a number of our newly identified DTGs are shown to be associated with at least two RPE stars each (DTG-2: 3, DTG-7: 2; DTG-27: 2). Taken as a whole, these results are consistent with ultra-faint and/or dwarf spheroidal galaxies as birth environments in which $r$-process nucleosynthesis took place, and then were disrupted by the Milky Way., Comment: Accepted for ApJ. We present a kinematic analysis of a sample of 23,908 G- and K-type dwarfs in the Galactic disk. Based on the $\alpha$-abundance ratio, [$\alpha$/Fe], we separated our sample into low-$\alpha$ thin-disk and high-$\alpha$ thick-disk stars. We find a $V_{\rm \phi}$ gradient of $-$28.2 km s$^{-1}$ dex$^{-1}$ over [Fe/H] for the thin disk, and an almost flat trend of the velocity dispersions of $V_{\rm R}$, $V_{\rm \phi}$, and $V_{\rm Z}$ components with [Fe/H]. The metal-poor (MP; [Fe/H] $<$ $-$0.3) thin-disk stars with low-$V_{\rm \phi}$ velocities have high eccentricities ($e$) and small perigalacticon distances ($r_{\rm p}$), while the high-$V_{\rm \phi}$ MP thin-disk stars possess low $e$ and large $r_{\rm p}$. Interestingly, half of the super metal-rich ([Fe/H] $>$ $+$0.1) stars in the thin disk exhibit low-$e$, solar-like orbits. Accounting for the inhomogeneous metallicity distribution of the thin-disk stars with various kinematics requires radial migration by churning $-$ it apparently strongly influences the current structure of the thin disk; we cannot rule out the importance of blurring for the high-$e$ stars. We derive a rotation velocity gradient of $+$36.9 km s$^{-1}$ dex$^{-1}$ for the thick disk, and decreasing trends of velocity dispersions with increasing [Fe/H]. The thick-disk population also has a broad distribution of eccentricity, and the number of high-$e$ stars increases with decreasing [Fe/H]. These kinematic behaviors could be the result of a violent mechanism, such as a gas-rich merger or the presence of giant turbulent clumps, early in the history of its formation. CEMP-no stars, a subclass of carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars, are one of the most significant stellar populations in Galactic Archaeology, because they dominate the low end of the metallicity distribution function, providing information on the early star-formation and chemical-evolution history of the Milky Way and its satellite galaxies. Here we present an analysis of medium-resolution ($R \sim 1,800$) optical spectroscopy for a CEMP giant, SDSS J132755.56+333521.7, observed with the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT), one of the brightest ($g \sim 20.5$) members of the classical dwarf spheroidal galaxy, Canes Venatici I (CVn I). Many CEMP stars discovered to date have very cool effective temperatures ($T_{\mathrm{eff}}< 4500$ K), resulting in strong veiling by molecular carbon bands over their optical spectra at low/medium spectral resolution. We introduce a technique to mitigate the carbon-veiling problem to obtain reliable stellar parameters and validate this method with the LBT medium-resolution optical spectra of the ultra metal-poor ([Fe/H] = $-4.0$) CEMP-no dwarf, G 77-61, and seven additional very cool CEMP stars, which have published high-resolution spectroscopic parameters. We apply this technique to the LBT spectrum of SDSS J132755.56+333521.7. We find that this star is well-described with parameters $T_{\mathrm{eff}}=4530$ K, log $g=$ 0.7, [Fe/H] $ = -3.38$, and absolute carbon abundance $A$(C) = 7.23, indicating that it is likely the first Group III CEMP-no star identified in CVn I. We search for dynamical substructures in the LAMOST DR3 very metal-poor (VMP) star catalog. After cross-matching with Gaia DR2, there are 3300 VMP stars with available high-quality astrometric information that have halo-like kinematics. We apply a method based on self-organizing maps to find groups clustered in the 4D space of orbital energy and angular momentum. We identify 57 dynamically tagged groups, which we label DTG-1 to DTG-57. Most of them belong to existing substructures in the nearby halo, such as the $Gaia$ Sausage or Sequoia. The stream identified by Helmi et al. is recovered, but the two disjoint portions of the substructure have distinct dynamical properties. The very retrograde substructure Rg5 found previously by Myeong et al. is also retrieved. We report 6 new DTGs with highly retrograde orbits, 2 with very prograde orbits, and 12 with polar orbits. By mapping other datasets (APOGEE halo stars, and catalogs of r-process-enhanced and CEMP stars) onto the trained neuron map, we can associate stars with detailed chemical abundances to the DTGs, and look for associations with chemically peculiar stars. The highly eccentric $Gaia$ Sausage groups contain representatives both of debris from the satellite itself (which is $\alpha$-poor) and the Splashed Disk, sent up into eccentric halo orbits from the encounter (and is $\alpha$-rich). The new prograde substructures also appear to be associated with the Splashed Disk. The DTGs belonging to the $Gaia$ Sausage host two relatively metal-rich $r$-II stars and six CEMP stars in different sub-classes, consistent with the idea that the $Gaia$ Sausage progenitor is a massive dwarf galaxy. Rg5 is dynamically associated with two highly $r$-process-enhanced stars with [Fe/H] $\sim -$3. This finding indicates that its progenitor might be an ultra-faint dwarf galaxy that has experienced $r$-process enrichment from neutron star mergers., Comment: ApJ, submitted

We explore differences in Galactic halo kinematic properties derived from two commonly employed Galactic potentials: the St$\ddot{a}$ckel potential and the default Milky Way-like potential used in the "Galpy" package (MWPotential2014), making use of stars with available metallicities, radial velocities, and proper motions from Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 12. Adopting the St$\ddot{a}$ckel potential, we find that the shape of the metallicity distribution function (MDF) and the distribution of orbital rotation abruptly change at $Z_{\rm max}$ = 15 kpc and $r_{\rm max}$ = 30 kpc (where $Z_{\rm max}$ and $r_{\rm max}$ are the maximum distances reached by a stellar orbit from the Galactic plane and from the Galactic center, respectively), indicating that the transition from dominance by the inner-halo stellar population to the outer-halo population occurs at those distances. Stars with $Z_{\rm max}$ $>$ 15 kpc show an average retrograde motion of $V_{\rm \phi}$ = $-$60 km s$^{-1}$, while stars with $r_{\rm max}$ $>$ 30 kpc exhibit an even larger retrograde value, $V_{\rm \phi}$ = $-$150 km s$^{-1}$. This retrograde signal is also confirmed using the sample of stars with radial velocities obtained by $Gaia$ Data Release 2, assuming the St$\ddot{a}$ckel potential. In comparison, when using the shallower Galpy potential, a noticeable change in the MDF occurs only at $Z_{\rm max}$ = 25 kpc, and a much less extreme retrograde motion is derived. This difference arises because stars with highly retrograde motions in the St$\ddot{a}$ckel potential are unbound in the shallower Galpy potential, and stars with lower rotation velocities reach larger $Z_{\rm max}$ and $r_{\rm max}$. The different kinematic characteristics derived from the two potentials suggest that the nature of the adopted Galactic potential can strongly influence interpretation of the properties of the Galactic halo., Comment: 21 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present an analysis of the kinematic properties of stellar populations in the Galactic halo, making use of over 100,000 main sequence turnoff (MSTO) stars observed in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. After dividing the Galactic halo into an inner-halo region (IHR) and outer-halo region (OHR), based on the spatial variation of carbon-to-iron ratios in the sample, we find that stars in the OHR exhibit a clear retrograde motion of $-$49 $\pm$ 4 km s$^{-1}$ and a more spherical distribution of stellar orbits, while stars in the IHR have zero net rotation ($-$3 $\pm$ 1 km s$^{-1}$) with a much more radially biased distribution of stellar orbits. Furthermore, we classify the carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars among the MSTO sample in each halo component into CEMP-no and CEMP-$s$ sub-classes, based on their absolute carbon abundances, $A$(C), and examine the spatial distributions and kinematics associated with each sub-class. The CEMP-no stars are the majority sub-class of CEMP stars in the OHR ($\sim$ 65%), and the minority sub-class in the IHR ($\sim$ 44%), similar to the results of several previous analyses. The CEMP-no stars in each halo region exhibit slightly higher counter-rotation than the CEMP-$s$ stars, but within statistical errors. The CEMP-no stars also show a more spherical distribution of orbits than the CEMP-$s$ stars in each halo region. These distinct characteristics provide strong evidence that numerous low-mass satellite galaxies (similar to the ultra-faint dwarf galaxies) have donated stars to the OHR, while more-massive dwarf galaxies provided the dominant contribution to the IHR., Comment: 21 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present an analysis of the chemical abundances and kinematics of six low-mass dwarf stars, previously claimed to be candidate hypervelocity stars (HVSs). We obtained moderate-resolution ($R\sim$ 6000) spectra of these stars to estimate their abundances of several chemical elements (Mg, Si, Ca, Ti, Cr, Fe, and Ni), and derived their space velocity components and orbital parameters using proper motions from \gaia\ Data Release 2. All six stars are shown to be bound to the Milky Way, and in fact are not even considered high-velocity stars with respect to the Galactic rest frame. Nevertheless, we attempt to characterize their parent Galactic stellar components by simultaneously comparing their abundance patterns and orbital parameters with those expected from various Galactic stellar components. We find that two of our program stars are typical disk stars. For four of the program stars, even though their kinematic probabilistic membership assignment suggests membership in the Galactic disk, based on their distinct orbital properties and chemical characteristics, we cannot rule out the exotic origins of these objects, as follows. Two stars appear to be runaway stars from the Galactic disk. One program star has possibly been accreted from a disrupted dwarf galaxy or dynamically heated from a birthplace in the Galactic bulge. The last object may be either a runaway disk star or has been dynamically heated. The Milky Way is a unique laboratory, where stellar properties can be measured and analyzed in detail. In particular, stars in the older populations encode information on the mechanisms that led to the formation of our Galaxy. In this article, we analyze the kinematics, spatial distribution, and chemistry of a large number of stars in the Solar Neighborhood, where all of the main Galactic components are well-represented. We find that the thick disk comprises two distinct and overlapping stellar populations, with different kinematic properties and chemical compositions. The metal-weak thick disk (MWTD) contains two times less metal content than the canonical thick disk, and exhibits enrichment of light elements typical of the oldest stellar populations of the Galaxy. The rotational velocity of the MWTD around the Galactic center is ~ 150 km s^(-1), corresponding to a rotational lag of 30 km s^(-1) relative to the canonical thick disk (~ 180 km s^(-1)), with a velocity dispersion of 60 km s^(-1). This stellar population likely originated from the merger of a dwarf galaxy during the early phases of our Galaxy's assembly, or it is a precursor disk, formed in the inner Galaxy and brought into the Solar Neighborhood by bar instability or spiral-arm formation mechanisms., Comment: 25 pages, 10 figures, Accepted for Publication on the Astrophysical Journal

We present results from an observing campaign to identify low-metallicity stars in the Best & Brightest Survey. From medium-resolution (R ~ 1, 200 - 2, 000) spectroscopy of 857 candidates, we estimate the stellar atmospheric parameters (Teff, log g, and [Fe/H]), as well as carbon and alpha-element abundances. We find that 69% of the observed stars have [Fe/H] <= -1.0, 39% have [Fe/H] <= -2.0, and 2% have [Fe/H] <= -3.0. There are also 133 carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars in this sample, with 97 CEMP Group I and 36 CEMP Group II stars identified in the A(C) versus [Fe/H] diagram. A subset of the confirmed low-metallicity stars were followed-up with high-resolution spectroscopy, as part of the R-process Alliance, with the goal of identifying new highly and moderately r-process-enhanced stars. Comparison between the stellar atmospheric parameters estimated in this work and from high-resolution spectroscopy exhibit good agreement, confirming our expectation that medium-resolution observing campaigns are an effective way of selecting interesting stars for further, more targeted, efforts., Comment: 57 pages, accepted for publication in ApJ

Understanding the evolution of carbon and iron in the Milky Way's halo is of importance because these two elements play crucial roles constraining star formation, Galactic assembly, and chemical evolution in the early Universe. Here, we explore the spatial distributions of carbonicity, [C/Fe], and metallicity, [Fe/H], of the halo system based on medium-resolution ($R \sim$ 1,300) spectroscopy of $\sim$58,000 stars in the Southern Hemisphere from the AAOmega Evolution of Galactic Structure (AEGIS) survey. The AEGIS carbonicity map exhibits a positive gradient with distance, as similarly found for the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) carbonicity map of Lee et al. The metallicity map confirms that [Fe/H] decreases with distance, from the inner halo to the outer halo. We also explore the formation and chemical-evolution history of the halo by considering the populations of carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars present in the AEGIS sample. The cumulative and differential frequencies of CEMP-no stars (as classified by their characteristically lower levels of absolute carbon abundance, $A$(C) $\leq$ 7.1 for sub-giants and giants) increases with decreasing metallicity, and is \textit{substantially higher than previous determinations} for CEMP stars as a whole. In contrast, that of CEMP-$s$ stars (with higher $A$(C)), remains almost flat, at a value $\sim$10\%, in the range $-\,4.0 \lesssim$ [Fe/H] $\lesssim-$2.0. The distinctly different behaviors of the CEMP-no and CEMP-$s$ stars relieve the tension with population-synthesis models assuming a binary mass-transfer origin, which previously struggled to account for the higher reported frequencies of CEMP stars, taken as a whole, at low metallicity., Comment: 21 pages including Appendix and 11 Figures; Accepted to the Astrophysical Journal
