Digital Game Based Learning (DGBL) was considered as an effective way to engage learners and enhance learning performance. This case study demonstrates a design case that uses DGBL to support writing practices using student-centered pedagogy in K-12 education. Minecraft is used as a tool of transferring students' imagination and abstract design to actual writing and building. We investigated a curriculum of adopting Minecraft in writing practices and analyzed students' writing artifacts to identify the elements that fulfill US Common Core State Standards (CCSS) requirements in a rich digital learning environment. In this study, we found that using DGBL could develop students' literacy skills that meet CCSS in a student-centered curriculum and eventually support students to prepare for standardized tests. Implications for K-12 educators are also considered.

People's subjective response to any thermal environment is commonly investigated by using rating scales describing the degree of thermal sensation, comfort, and acceptability. Subsequent analyses of results collected in this way rely on the assumption that specific distances between verbal anchors placed on the scale exist and that relationships between verbal anchors from different dimensions that are assessed (e.g. thermal sensation and comfort) do not change. Another inherent assumption is that such scales are independent of the context in which they are used (climate zone, season, etc.). Despite their use worldwide, there is indication that contextual differences influence the way the scales are perceived and therefore question the reliability of the scales’ interpretation. To address this issue, a large international collaborative questionnaire study was conducted in 26 countries, using 21 different languages, which led to a dataset of 8225 questionnaires. Results, analysed by means of robust statistical techniques, revealed that only a subset of the responses are in accordance with the mentioned assumptions. Significant differences appeared between groups of participants in their perception of the scales, both in relation to distances of the anchors and relationships between scales. It was also found that respondents’ interpretations of scales changed with contextual factors, such as climate, season, and language. These findings highlight the need to carefully consider context-dependent factors in interpreting and reporting results from thermal comfort studies or post-occupancy evaluations, as well as to revisit the use of rating scales and the analysis methods used in thermal comfort studies to improve their reliability.

Thermal discomfort is one of the main triggers for occupants interactions with components of the built environment such as adjustments of thermostats and/or opening windows and strongly related to the energy use in buildings. Understanding causes for thermal (dis-)comfort is crucial for design and operation of any type of building. The assessment of human thermal perception through rating scales, for example in post-occupancy studies, has been applied for several decades; however, long-existing assumptions related to these rating scales had been questioned by several researchers. The aim of this study was to gain deeper knowledge on contextual influences on the interpretation of thermal perception scales and their verbal anchors by survey participants. A questionnaire was designed and consequently applied in 21 language versions. These surveys were conducted in 57 cities in 30 countries resulting in a dataset containing responses from 8225 participants. The database offers potential for further analysis in the areas of building design and operation, psycho-physical relationships between human perception and the built environment, and linguistic analyses.

Purpose: Dry eye syndrome is a common ocular disease that causes morbidity, high healthcare burden, and decreased quality of life. In this study, we evaluated the beneficial effects of a standardized extract of small black soybean (EYESOY®) in a benzalkonium chloride (BAC)-induced murine model of dry eye. Methods: Experimental dry eye was induced by instillation of 0.02% BAC on the right eye of the Sprague-Dawley rats. Saline solution or EYESOY were administered orally every day for 8 weeks. Results: EYESOY significantly improved tear volume in the cornea compared with that in the BAC group. Moreover, EYESOY inhibited damage to the corneal epithelial cells and lacrimal glands by suppressing the oxidative and inflammatory responses in a mouse dry eye model. It also increased the goblet cell density and mucin integrity in the conjunctiva. Conclusions: Our results suggest that EYESOY has the potential to alleviate dry eye syndrome. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: This post hoc analysis evaluated the efficacy and safety of intravenous belimumab 10 mg/kg in the South Korean subgroup of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) enrolled in the North East Asia (NEA) study (GSK Study BEL113750; NCT01345253). Methods: NEA was a double‐blind, placebo‐controlled, randomized Phase 3 trial. Patients with active, autoantibody‐positive SLE were randomized 2:1 to belimumab or placebo plus standard therapy administered on Days 0, 14, and 28, and then every 28 days up to Week 48. The primary efficacy endpoint in this analysis was SLE Responder Index 4 (SRI‐4) response rate at Week 52, defined as the proportion of patients achieving a ≥4‐point reduction in Safety of Estrogens in Lupus Erythematosus National Assessment‐SLE Disease Activity Index (SELENA‐SLEDAI) score, no worsening (<0.3 increase from baseline) in Physician Global Assessment, no new British Isles Lupus Assessment Group (BILAG) A domain and <2 new BILAG B domain scores. Results: Among 100 South Korean patients enrolled in NEA, 54/66 (81.8%) belimumab‐ and 24/34 (70.6%) placebo‐treated patients completed the double‐blind phase. Significantly more belimumab‐ than placebo‐treated patients achieved SRI‐4 response at Week 52 (n = 35/66, 53.0% vs. n = 8/34, 23.5%; odds ratio [OR; 95% confidence interval (CI)]: 3.67 [1.45, 9.28]; p =.0061). The proportion of patients experiencing ≥1 adverse event was similar between groups (belimumab: n = 60/66, 90.9% vs. placebo: n = 31/34, 91.2%). No new safety signals emerged in this subgroup analysis. Conclusion: Belimumab was efficacious for the treatment of SLE and well tolerated among the South Korean subgroup of patients from the NEA study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: Volatile profiles and degree of oxidation in corn oils after microwave treatment for 50 min were compared to oils with conventional heating at 180°C for 4 h. Oil microwaved for 10 and 50 min showed a similar degree of oxidation compared to the oil heated at 180°C for 1 and 3 h, respectively, based on the primary and secondary oxidation products. However, the total volatile contents of 50 min‐microwaved oil were significantly lower than that of corn oil heated for 1 h at 180°C (P < 0.05). Microwave treatment accelerated the rates of lipid oxidation by 4.6 times compared to 180°C thermal oxidation. Relatively short treatment with microwave irradiation may not provide sufficient time to generate volatiles from oil. Microwaved corn oil for 50 min had higher contents of hexanal and t‐2‐heptenal and lower contents of 2,4‐decadienal and nonanal than the oils heated at 180°C for 3 h.
