Abstract

The Chemical Reaction Network (CRN) is a well-studied model that describes the interaction of molecules in well-mixed solutions. In 2014, Qian and Winfree [22] proposed the abstract surface chemical reaction network model (sCRN), which takes the advantage of spatial separation by placing molecules on a structured surface, limiting the interaction between molecules. In this model, molecules can only react with their immediate neighbors. Many follow up works study the computational and pattern-construction power of sCRNs. In this work, our goal is to describe the power of sCRN by relating the model to other well-studied models in distributed computation. In this work, our main result is to show that, given the same initial configuration, sCRN, affinity strengthening tile automata, cellular automata, and amoebot can all simulate each other (up to unavoidable rotation and reflection of the pattern). One of our techniques is a coloring on-the-fly, which allows all molecules in sCRN to have a global orientation., Comment: 46 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

Objective: Epilepsy is a non‐communicable disease costing a massive burden globally. It is known that there is increased prevalence of morbidity and mortality following COVID‐19 infection among people with epilepsy (PWE). However, there is limited information about the adverse events following COVID‐19 immunization among PWE. Hence, this study aimed to assess the safety and adverse events following immunization (AEFI) of various COVID‐19 vaccines among PWE from our centre, focusing on neurological AEFI. Methods: This cross‐sectional study recruited 120 adult PWE from the Neurology Clinic of the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre (UKMMC). Consent‐taking was conducted via synchronous or asynchronous approaches, followed by a phone call interview session. The interview collected socio‐demographic information, epilepsy‐related variables, and vaccination‐related variables. Univariate analysis and multiple logistic regression analysis were done to confirm factors associated with the AEFI of COVID‐19 vaccination. Results: Among all types of COVID‐19 vaccines, most of the PWE received the Cominarty® COVID‐19 vaccination (52.5%). Overall, local AEFI was the quickest to develop, with an average onset within a day. PWE with normal body mass index (BMI) had a higher risk of developing both local and systemic AEFI compared to those underweight and obese PWE (OR: 15.09, 95% CI 1.70–134.28, P = 0.02). Significance: COVID‐19 vaccines are safe for PWE. AEFI among PWE are similar to those of the general population following COVID‐19 vaccination. 26. The 'Self' Under COVID-19: Social Role Disruptions, Self-Authenticity And Present-Focused Coping

Abstract

Social role disruption is a state involving upheaval of social identities, routines and responsibilities. Such disruption is presently occurring at a global scale due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which poses a threat not only to health and security but also to the social roles that underlie people's daily lives. Our collective response to combat the virus entails, for example, parents homeschooling children, friends socializing online, and employees working from home. While these collective efforts serve the greater good, people's social roles now lack continuity from what was authentic to the roles before the pandemic began. This, we argue, takes a psychological toll. Individuals feel inauthentic, or alienated and out-of-touch from their "true" selves, to the extent their social roles undergo change. As evidence, we report survey (Studies 1 & 4) and experimental (Studies 2 & 3) evidence that COVID-19-related role changes indeed increase inauthenticity. This effect occurs independent of (a) how positively/negatively people feel about COVID-19 (Study 2) and (b) how positively/negatively people feel about the role change itself (Studies 3 & 4). Moreover, we identify two moderators of this effect. First, this effect occurs when (and ostensibly because) the social roles undergoing change are central to an individual's sense of self (Study 2). Second, this effect depends on an individual's temporal perspective. People can safeguard their self-authenticity in the face of changing social roles if they stay focused on the here-and-now (the present and immediate future), rather than focusing on the past (pre-COVID-19) or future (post-COVID-19) (Studies 3 & 4). This advantage for present-focused coping is observed in both the U.S.A. (Study 3) and Hong Kong (Study 4). We suggest that the reason people feel more authentically themselves when they maintain a present focus is because doing so makes the discontinuity of their social roles less salient.

Abstract

This was a systematic review of the literature on the association between obesity and the outcome of inflammatory rheumatic diseases. We conducted a literature search using PubMed®, Embase and PsycINFO®. Articles were classified into three categories based on the effects of obesity on the outcomes of inflammatory rheumatic diseases. The subject population, country, type of studies, number of patients, measurement of obesity and outcomes assessed were presented. Quality was appraised using Kmet et al's criteria. 4,331 articles were screened and 60 were relevant to the objective. Obesity had a negative, positive and neutral association with outcomes of inflammatory rheumatic diseases in 38 (63.3%) studies with 57,612 subjects, 11 (18.3%) studies with 3,866 subjects, and 11 (18.3%) studies with 3,834 subjects, respectively. In most studies, the disease population had been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Tumour necrosis factor-α inhibitors were mostly associated with negative outcomes. More studies examining subjects outside Europe and North America and diseases other than RA are warranted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

34. #41 : The Effectiveness of GnRH Agonist Administration Prior to Frozen-Thawed Embryo Transfer with Artificial Cycle: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Different Protocols and Infertile Populations

Abstract

Background and Aims: We investigated the use of GnRHa pretreatment with different protocols and durations of treatment on pregnancy outcomes in women undergoing FET with artificial cycles (AC-FET).Method: A systematic search of PubMed, EMBASE, Google Scholar, and Cochrane library was performed to include only eligible peer-reviewed studies in English published before September 01, 2022. This review was registered on PROSPERO (CRD42022299259)Results: A total of 41 studies (43021 individuals) were included with low to moderate risk of bias. Overall, GnRHa pretreatment improved clinical pregnancy rate (CPR) (OR=1.27, 95%CI:1.12-1.44), implantation rate (IR) (OR=1.24, 95%CI:1.07-1.45), live birth rate (LBR) (OR=1.31, 95%CI:1.07-1.60) and endometrial thickness (MD=0.16, 95%CI:0.03-0.30). Subgroup analyses of randomized and non-randomized studies both demonstrated the benefits of GnRHa pretreatment in CPR, IR, and LBR. Protocols using depot GnRHa (OR=1.19, 95%CI:1.04-1.36) showed a better LBR than daily GnRHa (OR=1.04, 95%CI:0.93-1.16). Women administered GnRHa for more than one cycle had better CPR (OR=2.01, 95%CI:1.29-3.13) and IR (OR=2.14, 95%CI:0.98-4.67) than those treated with GnRHa within one cycle before FET ([OR=1.18, 95%CI:1.04-1.33] and [OR=1.16, 95%CI:1.01-1.32], respectively). In women with PCOS, pituitary suppression with GnRHa significantly improved CPR (OR=1.24, 95%CI:0.98-4.67), LBR (OR=1.22, 95%CI:1.05-1.42) and reduced the miscarriage rate (OR=0.75, 95%CI:0.59-0.95). In contrast, women with regular menstruation had a higher endometrial thickness (MD=0.16, 95%CI: 0.04-0.28) but no significant improvements in pregnancy outcomes. GnRHa pretreatment considerably improved IR (OR=2.21, 95%CI:1.60-3.07) in women with adenomyosis and CPR (OR=1.74, 95%CI:1.12-2.71), and LBR (OR=1.67, 95%CI:1.06-2.63) in women with endometriosis.Conclusion: GnRHa pretreatment, especially with longer suppression duration and the use of depot GnRHa, demonstrates a beneficial role during AC-FET cycles. Individuals with PCOS benefit from GnRHa pretreatment, though this FET protocol should be carefully considered in ovulatory women with regular menstruation. Albeit having the potential, effectiveness of this protocol on adenomyosis or endometriosis remains controversial and requires more rigorous investigation

Abstract

Preimplantation genetic testing has been used widely in recent years as a part of assisted reproductive technology (ART) owing to the breakthrough development of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) sequencing. With the advancement of technology and increased resolution of next generation sequencing (NGS), extensive comprehensive chromosome screening along with small clinically significant deletions and duplications can possibly be performed simultaneously. Here, we present a case of rare chromosomal aberrations: 46,XY,dup(15)(q11.2q13),t(16;18)(q23;p11.2), which resulted in a normally developed adult but abnormal gametes leading to recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL). To our best knowledge, this is the first report of t(16;18) translocation with such a small exchanged segment detected by NGS platform of MiSeq system in simultaneous 24-chromosome aneuploidy screening. Abstract

This was a systematic review of the literature on the association between obesity and the outcome of inflammatory rheumatic diseases. We conducted a literature search using PubMed®, Embase and PsycINFO®. Articles were classified into three categories based on the effects of obesity on the outcomes of inflammatory rheumatic diseases. The subject population, country, type of studies, number of patients, measurement of obesity and outcomes assessed were presented. Quality was appraised using Kmet et al's criteria. 4,331 articles were screened and 60 were relevant to the objective. Obesity had a negative, positive and neutral association with outcomes of inflammatory rheumatic diseases in 38 (63.3%) studies with 57,612 subjects, 11 (18.3%) studies with 3,866 subjects, and 11 (18.3%) studies with 3,834 subjects, respectively. In most studies, the disease population had been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Tumour necrosis factor-α inhibitors were mostly associated with negative outcomes. 40. Factors Associated With Initiation of Biologics in Patients With Axial Spondyloarthritis in an Urban Asian City: A PRESPOND Study.

Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to examine if patients' sociodemographic, clinical characteristics, and patient-reported outcomes were associated with biologics initiation in patients with axial spondyloarthritis in Singapore., Methods: Data from a dedicated registry from a tertiary referral center in Singapore from January 2011 to July 2016 were used. Initiation of first biologics was the main outcome of interest. Logistic regression analyses were used to explore the association of various factors on biologics initiation., Results: Of 189 eligible patients (aged 37.7 ± 13.3 years; 76.2% were males), 30 (15.9 %) were started on biologics during follow-up. In the multivariable analysis model, age (odds ratio [OR]; 0.93; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.89-0.98; p < 0.01), mental component summary score of Short-Form 36 Health Survey (OR, 0.18; 95% CI, 0.03-0.89; p = 0.04), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (OR, 1.02; 95% CI, 1.00-1.04; p = 0.02), presence of peptic ulcer disease (OR, 10.4; 95% CI, 2.21-48.8; p < 0.01), and lack of good response to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (OR, 4.44; 95% CI, 1.63-12.1; p < 0.01) were found to be associated with biologics initiation., Conclusions: Age, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, mental component summary score, comorbidities of peptic ulcer disease, and responsiveness to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs were associated with biologics initiation. It is essential that clinicians recognize these factors in order to optimize therapy.
