We aimed to develop an automated detector that determines laryngeal invasion during swallowing. Laryngeal invasion, which causes significant clinical problems, is defined as two or more points on the penetration–aspiration scale (PAS). We applied two three-dimensional (3D) stream networks for action recognition in videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) videos. To detect laryngeal invasion (PAS 2 or higher scores) in VFSS videos, we employed two 3D stream networks for action recognition. To establish the robustness of our model, we compared its performance with those of various current image classification-based architectures. The proposed model achieved an accuracy of 92.10%. Precision, recall, and F1 scores for detecting laryngeal invasion (≥PAS 2) in VFSS videos were 0.9470 each. The accuracy of our model in identifying laryngeal invasion surpassed that of other updated image classification models (60.58% for ResNet101, 60.19% for Swin-Transformer, 63.33% for EfficientNet-B2, and 31.17% for HRNet-W32). Our model is the first automated detector of laryngeal invasion in VFSS videos based on video action recognition networks. Considering its high and balanced performance, it may serve as an effective screening tool before clinicians review VFSS videos, ultimately reducing the burden on clinicians. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BackgroundAnimal domestication involved drastic phenotypic changes driven by strong artificial selection and also resulted in new populations of breeds, established by humans. This study aims to identify genes that show evidence of recent artificial selection during pig domestication.ResultsWhole-genome resequencing of 30 individual pigs from domesticated breeds, Landrace and Yorkshire, and 10 Asian wild boars at ~16-fold coverage was performed resulting in over 4.3 million SNPs for 19,990 genes. We constructed a comprehensive genome map of directional selection by detecting selective sweeps using an F ST-based approach that detects directional selection in lineages leading to the domesticated breeds and using a haplotype-based test that detects ongoing selective sweeps within the breeds. We show that candidate genes under selection are significantly enriched for loci implicated in quantitative traits important to pig reproduction and production. The candidate gene with the strongest signals of directional selection belongs to group III of the metabolomics glutamate receptors, known to affect brain functions associated with eating behavior, suggesting that loci under strong selection include loci involved in behaviorial traits in domesticated pigs including tameness.ConclusionsWe show that a significant proportion of selection signatures coincide with loci that were previously inferred to affect phenotypic variation in pigs. We further identify functional enrichment related to behavior, such as signal transduction and neuronal activities, for those targets of selection during domestication in pigs.

The development of infrared (IR) plastic optics for infrared thermal imaging, particularly, in the long‐wave IR (LWIR) spectrum (7–14 µm) is an area of growing technological interest due to the potential advantages associated with plastic optics (e.g., moldability and low cost). The development of a new class of optical polymers, chalcogenide‐based inorganic/organic hybrid polymers (CHIPs) derived from the inverse vulcanization of elemental sulfur, has enabled significant improvements in IR transparency due to reduction of IR absorbing organic comonomer units. The vast majority of effort has focused on new chalcogenide hybrid polymer synthesis and optical property improvements (e.g., refractive index, Abbe number, and LWIR transmission); however, fabrication and IR imaging methodology to prepare optical components has not been demonstrated, which remains critical to develop viable IR plastic optics. A new methodology is reported to fabricate optical components and evaluate LWIR imaging performance of this emerging class of optical polymers. New diffractive flat optics with a Fresnel lens design for these materials have been developed, along with a basic LWIR imaging system to evaluate CHIPs for LWIR imaging. This system‐based approach enables correspondence of copolymer structure‐property correlations with LWIR imaging performance, along with demonstration of room temperature LWIR imaging.
