25. Clinical and Radiologic Predictors of Response to Atezolizumab-Bevacizumab in Advanced Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to identify clinical and radiologic characteristics that could predict response to atezolizumab-bevacizumab combination therapy in patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Materials and Methods: This single-center retrospective study included 108 advanced HCC patients with intrahepatic lesions who were treated with atezolizumab-bevacizumab. Two radiologists independently analyzed imaging characteristics of the index tumor on pretreatment computed tomography. Predictive factors associated with progressive disease (PD) at the best response based on Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors, ver. 1.1 were evaluated using logistic regression analysis. Progression-free survival (PFS) was estimated by the Kaplan-Meier method and compared with the log-rank test. Results: Of 108 patients with a median PFS of 15 weeks, 40 (37.0%) had PD during treatment. Factors associated with PD included the presence of extrahepatic metastases (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 4.13; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.19 to 14.35; p=0.03), the infiltrative appearance of the tumor (aOR, 3.07; 95% CI, 1.05 to 8.93; p=0.04), and the absence of arterial-phase hyperenhancement (APHE) (aOR, 6.34; 95% CI, 2.18 to 18.47; p < 0.001). Patients with two or more of these factors had a PD of 66.7% and a median PFS of 8 weeks, indicating a significantly worse outcome compared to the patients with one or no of these factors. Conclusion: In patients with advanced HCC treated with atezolizumab-bevacizumab treatment, the absence of APHE, infiltrative appearance of the intrahepatic tumor, and presence of extrahepatic metastases were associated with poor response and survival. 26. In Vitro Raman Thermometry Using Gold Nanorod-Decorated Carbon Nanotubes.

Abstract

Anti-Stokes Raman thermometry, a rapidly evolving field in Raman spectroscopy, was investigated for in situ cellular temperature measurementsa critical aspect in photothermal cancer therapy. In this study, multiwalled carbon nanotubes decorated with gold nanorods (MWCNTs-GNRs) were employed as nanothermometer probes. Characterization involved the analysis of individual Raman spectra acquired at various powers and initial temperatures. The changes observed in the Raman spectra of MWCNTs-GNRs, particularly in response to variations in temperature and excitation power, provide the necessary information to develop a reliable Raman thermometry. This methodology facilitated the extraction of the intrinsic photothermal heating coefficient of MWCNTs-GNRs, offering essential insights into their thermometric properties. An evaluation was extended to incubating MWCNTs-GNRs with prostate cancer PC3 cell lines, where anti-Stokes and Stokes signals were measured at different laser powers to assess in situ cellular temperatures. Temperature maps for a selected area were generated for MWCNTs-GNRs and a single PC3 cell incubated with MWCNTs-GNRs with data standard error analysis performed to indicate a certain level of reliability in temperature measurement accuracy. Cell viability was determined through trypan blue assays, and the obtained temperatures were correlated with viability outcomes at different laser powers. Our investigation encompassed a temperature range spanning 60–100 °C, transcending the critical temperature threshold of 50 °C, which is associated with inducing cell demise. 35. Reductive Dissolution of NCM Cathode through Anaerobic Respiration by Shewanella putrefaciens

Abstract

The consumption of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has considerably increased over the past decade, leading to a rapid increase in the number of spent LIBs. Exposing spent LIBs to the environment can cause serious environmental harm; however, there is a lack of experimentally obtained information regarding the environmental impacts of abandoned cathode materials. Here, we report the interactions between Shewanella putrefaciens, a microorganism commonly found in diverse low-oxygen natural settings, and LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2(NCM622) under anaerobic conditions. We present compelling evidence that the anaerobic respiration of Shewanella putrefacienstriggers ∼59 and ∼78% dissolution of 0.2 g/L pristine and spent NCM622, respectively. We observed that Shewanella putrefaciensinteracted with the pristine and the spent NCM622 under anaerobic conditions at a neutral pH and room temperature and induced the reduction of Ni, Co, and Mn, resulting in the subsequent dissolution of Li, Ni, Co, and Mn. Moreover, we found that secondary mineralization occurred on the surface of reacted NCM622. These findings not only shed light on the substantial impact of microbial respiration on the fate of discarded cathode materials in anaerobic environments but also reveal the potential for sustainable bioleaching of cathodes in spent LIBs.
