7. Effects of Learner-Control versus Program-Control Strategies on Computer-Aided Learning of Chemistry Problems: For Acquisition or Review?

Abstract

The pro-democracy protests that had begun in 2011 overthrew the military power of the North African countries including Tunisia, Egypt and Libya. Then the wave of the Arab democratization alerted the whole Arab world beyond Morocco, Algeria, Sudan, Jordan, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia, as the demand of the citizens on democratization in Iran, a non-Arab Middle East country, proceeded to an antigovernment campaign. The pro-democratization protests in the North African Arab countries just resulted in the birth of an internationally unprecedented armed group called ISIS without democracy taking root in the Arab region. This made the democratization of the Arab world a distant hope and the Arab world suffer from internal conflicts. There are complicated reasons why democracy has failed to take right root in the Arab countries where the pro-democratization protests occurred. On top of that, the ISIS-related organizations that are spreading as far as the North African region will further slow down the democratization of the Arab countries.

24. Children's Acquisition of Conditional Logic Structure: Teachable?

To assess the teachability of conditional logic structure, the commonly used syllogistic conditional reasoning task was divided into three main components: (1) inductive rule learning; (2) induction of conditional language; and (3) deductive interpretation. Children learned two linear function rules under varying conditions: presence vs. absence of pointing; visual cues (context vs. weight vs. both pictured); and a verbal-only baseline condition. A set of immediate memory-span tests, concept- and rule-learning tasks, and an IQ test were administered to adolescents. A color-form memory factor and IQ substantially predicted rule-learning proficiency. Effects of memory aids appeared to induce conceptual rules and serve as a base for rehearsing information. 28. Acquisition of Inductive Biconditional Reasoning Skills: Training of Simultaneous and Sequential Processing.

Tenth-grade students (n=144) received training on one of three processing methods: coding-mapping (simultaneous), coding only, or decision tree (sequential). Abstract

In order to make long-lived photoexcited charges for efficient catalytic photodegradation, rare earth elements are often incorporated into semiconductors. We studied the doping effect on photodegradation efficiency of Bi2WO6 samples with europium ions which were successfully synthesized by a simple one-step. The prepared catalyst was characterized by multiple techniques, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The photocatalytic activities of pristine Bi2WO6 and xEu-Bi2WO6 (x=1, 2, 3, and 4) were investigated in the presence of H2O2 for 2,4,5-Trichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4,5-T) as a target contaminant under visible light irradiation. The incorporation of Eu3+ into Bi2WO6 where Eu3+ ion played the role of an electron acceptor was favorable for transferring photoinduced electrons from Bi2WO6 to Eu3+, thereby increasing separation efficiency of photoinduced electron-hole, leading to enhanced photocatalytic activity of xEu-Bi2WO6. Under optimized condition, the photodegradation efficiency of 2,4,5-T by 2Eu-Bi2WO6 samples was 1.7-fold higher than that of pristine Bi2WO6 sample. We demonstrate that Eu3+ ion is a promising candidate for the development of a visible-light active semiconductor catalyst for environmental remediation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
