Physics - Instrumentation and Detectors ,High Energy Physics - Experiment ,for Snowmass 2021 - Abstract
In this White Paper for the 2021 Snowmass process, we detail the status and prospects for dual-readout calorimetry. While all calorimeters allow estimation of energy depositions in their active material, dual-readout calorimeters aim to provide additional information on the light produced in the sensitive media via, for example, wavelength and polarization, and/or a precision timing measurements, allowing an estimation of the shower-by-shower particle content. Utilizing this knowledge of the shower particle content may allow unprecedented energy resolution for hadronic particles and jets and new types of particle flow algorithms. We also discuss the impact continued development of this kind of calorimetry could have on precision on Higgs boson property measurements at future colliders., Comment: 48 pages

In the past 20 years, dual-readout calorimetry has emerged as a technique for measuring the properties of high-energy hadrons and hadron jets that offers considerable advantages compared with the instruments that are currently used for this purpose in experiments at the high-energy frontier. In this paper, we review the status of this experimental technique and the challenges faced for its further development., Comment: 44 pages, 53 figures, accepted for publication in Review of Modern Physics

In particle physics experiments, the quality of calorimetric particle detection is typically considerably worse for hadrons than for electromagnetic showers. In this paper, we investigate the root causes of this problem and evaluate two different methods that have been exploited to remedy this situation: compensation and dual readout. It turns out that the latter approach is more promising, as evidenced by experimental results., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research A

Physics - Instrumentation and Detectors - Abstract
The RD52 (DREAM) collaboration is performing R\&D on dual readout calorimetry techniques with the aim of improving hadronic energy resolution for future high energy physics experiments. The simultaneous detection of Cherenkov and scintillation light enables us to measure the electromagnetic fraction of hadron shower event-by-event. As a result, we could eliminate the main fluctuation which prevented from achieving precision energy measurement for hadrons. We have tested the performance of the lead and copper fiber prototypes calorimeters with various energies of electromagnetic particles and hadrons. During the beam test, we investigated the energy resolutions for electrons and pions as well as the identification of those particles in a longitudinally unsegmented calorimeter. Measurements were also performed on pure and doped PbWO$_{4}$ crystals, as well as BGO and BSO, with the aim of realising a crystal based dual readout detector. We will describe our results, focusing on the more promising properties of homogeneous media for the technique. Guidelines for additional developments on crystals will be also given. Finally we discuss the construction techniques that we have used to assemble our prototypes and give an overview of the ones that could be industrialized for the construction of a full hermetic calorimeter.

High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
We report a measurement of the fraction of top quark pair events produced via gluon-gluon fusion in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 1.96 ~\rm TeV$ in lepton+jets final states using the full RunII data set corresponding to $9.7 ~\rm fb^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected by the D\O\ experiment. We utilize a boosted decision tree to distinguish top quark pair events produced by $q\bar{q}$ annihilation and $gg$ fusion. We perform a template fit to extract the $t\bar{t}$ production fraction via $gg$ fusion and find $f_{gg} = 0.096 \pm 0.039 ~(\rm stat.) ~^{+0.077}_{-0.062} ~(\rm syst.)$., Comment: 4 pages, Proceedings of Top 2014, Cannes, France, 28th Sept - 3rd Oct 2014

Physics - Instrumentation and Detectors ,High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
We describe another detectora designed for the International Linear Collider based on several tested instrumentation innovations in order to achieve the necessary experi- mental goal of a detecter that is 2-to-10 times better than the already excellent SLC and LEP detectors, in particular, (1) dual-readout calorimeter system based on the RD52/DREAM measurements at CERN, (2) a cluster-counting drift chamber based on the successful kloe chamber at Frascati, and (3) a second solenoid to return the magnetic flux without iron. A high-performance pixel vertex chamber is presently undefined. We discuss particle identification, momentum and energy resolutions, and the machine-detector interface that together offer the possibility of a very high-performance detector for $e^+e^-$physics up to $\sqrt{s} = 1$ TeV., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, Snowmass on d' Miss'sip

This is the third out of five chapters of the final report [1] of the Workshop on Physics at HL-LHC, and perspectives on HE-LHC [2]. It is devoted to the study of the potential, in the search for Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics, of the High Luminosity (HL) phase of the LHC, defined as $3~\mathrm{ab}^{-1}$ of data taken at a centre-of-mass energy of $14~\mathrm{TeV}$, and of a possible future upgrade, the High Energy (HE) LHC, defined as $15~\mathrm{ab}^{-1}$ of data at a centre-of-mass energy of $27~\mathrm{TeV}$. We consider a large variety of new physics models, both in a simplified model fashion and in a more model-dependent one. A long list of contributions from the theory and experimental (ATLAS, CMS, LHCb) communities have been collected and merged together to give a complete, wide, and consistent view of future prospects for BSM physics at the considered colliders. On top of the usual standard candles, such as supersymmetric simplified models and resonances, considered for the evaluation of future collider potentials, this report contains results on dark matter and dark sectors, long lived particles, leptoquarks, sterile neutrinos, axion-like particles, heavy scalars, vector-like quarks, and more. Particular attention is placed, especially in the study of the HL-LHC prospects, to the detector upgrades, the assessment of the future systematic uncertainties, and new experimental techniques. The general conclusion is that the HL-LHC, on top of allowing to extend the present LHC mass and coupling reach by $20-50\%$ on most new physics scenarios, will also be able to constrain, and potentially discover, new physics that is presently unconstrained. Moreover, compared to the HL-LHC, the reach in most observables will generally more than double at the HE-LHC, which may represent a good candidate future facility for a final test of TeV-scale new physics., Report from Working Group 3 on the Physics of the HL-LHC, and Perspectives at the HE-LHC; v2: final version updated with the latest contributions and summaries; 239 pages + refs; v3: typos and character misprint in Fig. 7.2 fixed; v4: added one missing author

This is the third out of five chapters of the final report [1] of the Workshop on Physics at HL-LHC, and perspectives on HE-LHC [2]. It is devoted to the study of the potential, in the search for Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics, of the High Luminosity (HL) phase of the LHC, defined as $3$ ab$^{-1}$ of data taken at a centre-of-mass energy of 14 TeV, and of a possible future upgrade, the High Energy (HE) LHC, defined as $15$ ab$^{-1}$ of data at a centre-of-mass energy of 27 TeV. Moreover, compared to the HL-LHC, the reach in most observables will, generally more than double at the HE-LHC, which may represent a good candidate future facility for a final test of TeV-scale new physics.

We also discuss the impact continued development of this kind of calorimetry could have on precision on Higgs boson property measurements at future colliders., 48 pages
