The first-ever demonstration of stabilized Si/lithium-manganese-rich full cells, capable of retaining >90% energy over early cycling and >90% capacity over more than 750 cycles at the 1C rate (100% depth-of-discharge), is made through the utilization of a modified ionic-liquid electrolyte capable of forming a favorable cathode-electrolyte interface.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have emerged as versatile materials with many applications, such as carbon capture, molecular separation, catalysis, and energy storage. Traditionally, flexible building blocks have been avoided due to their potential to disrupt ordered structures. Recent studies have demonstrated the intriguing properties and enhanced structural diversity achievable with flexible components by judicious selection of building blocks. This study presents a novel series of ionic COFs (ICOFs) consisting of tetraborate nodes and flexible linkers. These ICOFs use borohydrides to irreversibly deprotonate the alcohol monomers to achieve a high degree of polymerization. Structural analysis confirms the dia topologies. Reticulation is explored using various monomers and metal counterions. Also, these frameworks exhibit excellent stability in alcohols and coordinating solvents. The materials have been tested as single‐ion conductive solid‐state electrolytes. ICOF‐203‐Li displays one of the lowest activation energies reported for ion conduction. Existing research has underscored the vital interplay between host organisms and their associated microbiomes, which affects health and function. In both plants and animals, host factors critically shape microbial communities and influence growth, health, and immunity. Post‐harvest plants, such as those used in kimchi, a traditional Korean dish, offer a unique avenue for exploring host‐microbe dynamics during fermentation. Despite the emphasis on lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in fermentation studies, the roles of host factors remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the influence of these factors on plant transcriptomes during kimchi fermentation. We individually inoculated nine LAB strains into germ‐free kimchi to generate LAB‐mono‐associated gnotobiotic kimchi and performed RNA‐sequencing analysis for the host vegetables during fermentation. The transcriptomes of post‐harvest vegetables in kimchi change over time, and microbes affect the transcriptome profiles of vegetables. Differentially expressed gene analyses revealed that microbes affected the temporal expression profiles of several genes in the plant transcriptomes in unique directions depending on the introduced LAB strains. Cluster analysis with other publicly available transcriptomes of post‐harvest vegetables and fruits further revealed that the plant transcriptome is more profoundly influenced by the environment harboring the host than by host phylogeny. Our results bridge the gap in understanding the bidirectional relationship between host vegetables and microbes during food fermentation, illuminating the complex interplay between vegetable transcriptomes, fermentative microbes, and the fermentation process in food production. The different transcriptomic responses elicited by specific LAB strains suggest the possibility of microbial manipulation to achieve the desired fermentation outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sulfide solid electrolytes (SSEs) have garnered significant attention for their high ionic conductivity in the development of all‐solid‐state batteries (ASSBs). However, SSEs face challenges due to poor chemical and electrochemical stability, leading to SE decomposition at the anode, which in turn increases internal resistance and reduces cycle performance. Herein, to address this issue, thin polymer layers are applied to prevent direct contact between the SSE and anode using the initiated chemical vapor deposition process. This method facilitates the uniform coating of eight types of polymers with polar functionalities on indium (In) anodes. Half‐cell tests and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis reveals that poly(acrylic acid) and poly((perfluorohexyl)ethyl acrylate), containing ─COOH and C─F bonds respectively, effectively stabilized the In/SSE interface. In full cells assembled with polymer‐coated In and LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811), capacity retention show remarkable improvement, achieving 64.8% for In@pAA and 50.7% for In@pC6FA after 100 cycles, compared to 29.0% for bare In. This study provides insights into the interaction between polar bonds in polymers and SSEs, potentially bridging a significant knowledge gap resulting from the significant lack of research investigating the relationship between polymers, one of the primary materials commonly used in ASSBs. Kimchi is a traditional fermented vegetable side dish in Korea and has become a global health food. Kimchi undergoes spontaneous fermentation, mainly by lactic acid bacteria (LAB) originating from its raw ingredients. Numerous LAB, including the genera Leuconostoc, Weissella, and Lactobacillus, participate in kimchi fermentation, reaching approximately 9–10 log colony forming units per gram or milliliter of food. The several health benefits of LAB (e.g., antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties) combined with their probiotic potential in complex diseases including obesity, cancer, atopic dermatitis, and immunomodulatory effect have generated an interest in the health effects of LAB present in kimchi. In order to estimate the potential of kimchi as a probiotic food, we comprehensively surveyed the health functionalities of kimchi and kimchi LAB, and their effects on human gut environment, highlighting the probiotics function. The demand for the development of high-capacity, safe, and long-life secondary batteries and the interest in all-solid-state batteries are increasing. The cycle performance of solid-state batteries is limited by interfacial phenomena at the electrolyte–anode interface hindering the ion diffusions. A multifunctional aluminum oxide (specifically, Al2O3) coating was created for application on silicon-based anodes in all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries. In an all-solid-state lithium-ion battery, the electrochemical properties of Al2O3 coating were enhanced. The coating was applied to provide stable artificial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layers on the silicon-based anodes. Al2O3 layers not only promote the diffusion of Li+ through the Li–Al–O, but their intrinsically low electronic conductivity also limits the transmission of electrons at the contact between the anode and the electrolyte. A Si alloy–polyacrylonitrile anode was prepared using Al2O3 coating as an artificial SEI layer by radio-frequency (RF) plasma. Radio-frequency sputtering was used to create a simple and economical Al2O3 coating. The cycle properties of silicon-based anodes were enhanced by the addition of the thin amorphous aluminum oxide layer (i.e., Al2O3 coating). After 100 charge–discharge cycles, the half-cell with the Al2O3 layer delivered a discharge capacity of 502.08 mAh g−1 and a capacity retention ratio of 58.86%. After 100 cycles, the sample without the Al2O3 layer had a discharge capacity of 278.48 mAh g−1 and capacity retention of 34.34%. Cells with an Al2O3 -coated anode retained high capacity after 100 cycles. Thus, the Al2O3 -coated Si-based anodes were cycled successfully in all-solid-state half-cells to produce functional high-performance lithium-ion batteries. In this study, we employed the vacuum deposition method, radio-frequency sputtering, to deposit very thin layer of aluminum oxide on the surface of fully fabricated anodes for improved cycling properties of all solid-state battery. This layer of aluminum oxide was confirmed using advanced elemental analysis techniques. The aluminum oxide layer with 1-min coating had much-improved cycling characteristics compared with those of the sample with no coatings. Previous studies have used theoretical calculations to report that an aluminum oxide coating layer improves the stability characteristics for sulfide-based solid electrolytes. In this paper, the actual stability improvement of the sulfide-based solid electrolyte was demonstrated in terms of much improved cycling characteristics throughout the cycling test. The appropriate amount of aluminum oxide coating decreases the decomposition of solid electrolyte and also decreases the consumption of Li ions during lithiation and delithiation. This surface modification technique can be utilized to improve the cycling stability of solid-state batteries, which is one of the critical factors for the early adoption of solid-state batteries for electric vehicle applications.
