Abstract: This paper addresses the question: Can spintronic circuits based on Magnetic Tunnel Junction (MTJ) transducers outperform their state-of-the-art CMOS counterparts? To this end, we use the EPFL combinational benchmark sets, synthesize them in 7 nm CMOS and in MTJ-based spintronic technologies, and compare the two implementation methods in terms of Energy-Delay-Product (EDP). To fully utilize the technologies potential, CMOS and spintronic implementations are built upon standard Boolean and Majority Gates, respectively. For the spintronic circuits, we assumed that domain conversion (electric/magnetic to magnetic/electric) is performed by means of MTJs and the computation is accomplished by domain wall based majority gates, and considered two EDP estimation scenarios: (i) Uniform Benchmarking, which ignores the circuit's internal structure and only includes domain transducers power and delay contributions into the calculations, and (ii) Majority-Inverter-Graph Benchmarking, which also embeds the circuit structure, the associated critical path delay and energy consumption by DW propagation. Our results indicate that for the uniform case, the spintronic route is better suited for the implementation of complex circuits with few inputs and outputs. On the other hand, when the circuit structure is also considered via majority and inverter synthesis, our analysis clearly indicates that in order to match and eventually outperform CMOS performance, MTJ efficiency has to be improved by 3-4 orders of magnitude. While it is clear that for the time being the MTJ-based-spintronic way cannot compete with CMOS, further transducer developments may tip the balance, which, when combined with information non-volatility, may make spintronic implementation for certain applications that require a large number of calculations and have a rather limited amount of interaction with the environment., Comment: This work was supported by imec Industrial Affiliation Program on Exploratory Logic Devices. Abstract: DUNE is a dual-site experiment for long-baseline neutrino oscillation studies, neutrino astrophysics and nucleon decay searches. ProtoDUNE Dual Phase (DP) is a 6x6x6m3 liquid argon time-projection-chamber (LArTPC) that recorded cosmic-muon data at the CERN Neutrino Platform in 2019-2020 as a prototype of the DUNE Far Detector. Charged particles propagating through the LArTPC produce ionization and scintillation light. The scintillation light signal in these detectors can provide the trigger for non-beam events. In addition, it adds precise timing capabilities and improves the calorimetry measurements. In ProtoDUNE-DP, scintillation and electroluminescence light produced by cosmic muons in the LArTPC is collected by photomultiplier tubes placed up to 7 m away from the ionizing track. In this paper, the ProtoDUNE-DP photon detection system performance is evaluated with a particular focus on the different wavelength shifters, such as PEN and TPB, and the use of Xe-doped LAr, considering its future use in giant LArTPCs. The scintillation light production and propagation processes are analyzed and a comparison of simulation to data is performed, improving understanding of the liquid argon properties, Comment: 31 pages, 29 figures

Abstract: This document presents the concept and physics case for a magnetized gaseous argon-based detector system (ND-GAr) for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) Near Detector. This detector system is required in order for DUNE to reach its full physics potential in the measurement of CP violation and in delivering precision measurements of oscillation parameters. In addition to its critical role in the long-baseline oscillation program, ND-GAr will extend the overall physics program of DUNE. The LBNF high-intensity proton beam will provide a large flux of neutrinos that is sampled by ND-GAr, enabling DUNE to discover new particles and search for new interactions and symmetries beyond those predicted in the Standard Model., Comment: Contribution to Snowmass 2021

Abstract: The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is a next-generation long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment with a primary physics goal of observing neutrino and antineutrino oscillation patterns to precisely measure the parameters governing long-baseline neutrino oscillation in a single experiment, and to test the three-flavor paradigm. DUNE's design has been developed by a large, international collaboration of scientists and engineers to have unique capability to measure neutrino oscillation as a function of energy in a broadband beam, to resolve degeneracy among oscillation parameters, and to control systematic uncertainty using the exquisite imaging capability of massive LArTPC far detector modules and an argon-based near detector. DUNE's neutrino oscillation measurements will unambiguously resolve the neutrino mass ordering and provide the sensitivity to discover CP violation in neutrinos for a wide range of possible values of $\delta_{CP}$. DUNE is also uniquely sensitive to electron neutrinos from a galactic supernova burst, and to a broad range of physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM), including nucleon decays. DUNE is anticipated to begin collecting physics data with Phase I, an initial experiment configuration consisting of two far detector modules and a minimal suite of near detector components, with a 1.2 MW proton beam. To realize its extensive, world-leading physics potential requires the full scope of DUNE be completed in Phase II. The three Phase II upgrades are all necessary to achieve DUNE's physics goals: (1) addition of far detector modules three and four for a total FD fiducial mass of at least 40 kt, (2) upgrade of the proton beam power from 1.2 MW to 2.4 MW, and (3) replacement of the near detector's temporary muon spectrometer with a magnetized, high-pressure gaseous argon TPC and calorimeter., Comment: Contribution to Snowmass 2021

7. Low-loss vanadium dioxide-enabled mmWave tunable reflective electromagnetic surface with complementary unit cells for wave manipulation.

Abstract: This study presents a novel implementation of vanadium dioxide (VO2) phase change material in an electromagnetic (EM) surface with beam steering capabilities. For the first time, we present the design, fabrication, and measurement of a globally actuated, VO2-based beamforming reflective EM surface. We propose a design featuring complementary unit cells that enable beam steering with a single excitation, marking a pioneering use of low-loss VO2 in creating a complementary EM surface for the mmWave band. The unit cells incorporating VO2 exhibit low-loss characteristics, with −0.92 and −1.9 dB in the hot state and −0.49 and −0.25 dB in the cold state, respectively. We incorporate both positive and negative phase variants alongside two temperature-independent phase unit cells. The complementary design enables us to utilize two beam operating states, effectively exploiting the otherwise unused cold state. We experimentally demonstrated beamforming at ±5° and ±10° from the broadside. In the case of ±10°, the measured gains at 35 GHz in the cold and hot states were 19.4 and 20.3 dB, respectively, which aligned well with the simulated gains of 20.9 and 21.5 dB. Manipulation of the electromagnetic wave direction with a single excitation has the potential for imaging, sensing, and communication applications. The complementary unit cell design methodology can be further adapted for mmWave beamforming, absorbing, and cloaking reconfigurable EM surfaces. Furthermore, the use of VO2 can be extended up to sub-THz frequencies due to the wideband, low-loss characteristics compared with conventional reconfigurable devices, such as PIN diodes or MEMS switches. Abstract: The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) will produce world-leading neutrino oscillation measurements over the lifetime of the experiment. In this work, we explore DUNE's sensitivity to observe charge-parity violation (CPV) in the neutrino sector, and to resolve the mass ordering, for exposures of up to 100 kiloton-megawatt-years (kt-MW-yr). The analysis includes detailed uncertainties on the flux prediction, the neutrino interaction model, and detector effects. We demonstrate that DUNE will be able to unambiguously resolve the neutrino mass ordering at a 3$\sigma$ (5$\sigma$) level, with a 66 (100) kt-MW-yr far detector exposure, and has the ability to make strong statements at significantly shorter exposures depending on the true value of other oscillation parameters. We also show that DUNE has the potential to make a robust measurement of CPV at a 3$\sigma$ level with a 100 kt-MW-yr exposure for the maximally CP-violating values $\delta_{\rm CP}} = \pm\pi/2$. Additionally, the dependence of DUNE's sensitivity on the exposure taken in neutrino-enhanced and antineutrino-enhanced running is discussed. An equal fraction of exposure taken in each beam mode is found to be close to optimal when considered over the entire space of interest.

Abstract: The ProtoDUNE-SP detector is a single-phase liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) that was constructed and operated in the CERN North Area at the end of the H4 beamline. This detector is a prototype for the first far detector module of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), which will be constructed at the Sandford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, South Dakota, USA. The ProtoDUNE-SP detector incorporates full-size components as designed for DUNE and has an active volume of $7\times 6\times 7.2$~m$^3$. The H4 beam delivers incident particles with well-measured momenta and high-purity particle identification. ProtoDUNE-SP's successful operation between 2018 and 2020 demonstrates the effectiveness of the single-phase far detector design. This paper describes the design, construction, assembly and operation of the detector components.

Abstract: The observation of 236 MeV muon neutrinos from kaon-decay-at-rest (KDAR) originating in the core of the Sun would provide a unique signature of dark matter annihilation. Since excellent angle and energy reconstruction are necessary to detect this monoenergetic, directional neutrino flux, DUNE with its vast volume and reconstruction capabilities, is a promising candidate for a KDAR neutrino search. In this work, we evaluate the proposed KDAR neutrino search strategies by realistically modeling both neutrino-nucleus interactions and the response of DUNE. We find that, although reconstruction of the neutrino energy and direction is difficult with current techniques in the relevant energy range, the superb energy resolution, angular resolution, and particle identification offered by DUNE can still permit great signal/background discrimination. Moreover, there are non-standard scenarios in which searches at DUNE for KDAR in the Sun can probe dark matter interactions., Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures

20. Contrasting Impacts of the South Pacific Split Jet and the Southern Annular Mode Modulation on Southern Ocean Circulation and Biogeochemistry

Abstract: A recent hypothesis postulated that paleoclimate changes to the Southern Hemisphere westerlies were characterized by the modulation of the wintertime South Pacific Split Jet. We explore this hypothesis further through simulating changes to the ocean circulation from Split Jet modulation, contrasting them against changes associated with the wintertime Southern Annular Mode (SAM). Three responses distinguish the Split Jet from the SAM impact on ocean circulation. (i) A weaker Split Jet strengthens the South Pacific subtropical gyre, leading to stronger western boundary currents and warming of the sea surface temperatures (SSTs) surrounding New Zealand. (ii) A positive SAM leads to an increase in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current and specifically Drake Passage throughflow. And (iii) a weaker Split Jet leads to increased formation of Subantartic Mode Water, whereas a positive SAM leads to increased Antarctic Intermediate Water. Both a weaker Split Jet and positive SAM lead to increased Southern Ocean meridional overturning circulation, though it is more pronounced for the latter. However, enhanced ventilation of deep water in both cases increases atmospheric pCO2 by only 1–3 ppm, because the associated cooling and efficient nutrient utilization in the model effectively negates the venting of deep ocean carbon. Both a weaker Split Jet and positive SAM enhance oxygenation of the deep ocean and intermediate waters but diminish oxygenation of the eastern equatorial Pacific. Our results provide guidance to distinguish SAM-like changes from Split Jet-like changes in paleoceanographic records, and we discuss the case of early deglacial transition to Heinrich 1.

Abstract: We experimentally investigate the charge (isospin) frustration induced by a geometrical symmetry in a triangular triple quantum dot. We observe the ground-state charge configurations of six-fold degeneracy, the manifestation of the frustration. The frustration results in omnidirectional charge transport, and it is accompanied by nearby nontrivial triple degenerate states in the charge stability diagram. The findings agree with a capacitive interaction model. We also observe unusual transport by the frustration, which might be related to elastic cotunneling and the interference of trajectories through the dot. Abstract: Multi-valued logic gates, which can handle quaternary numbers as inputs, are developed by exploiting the ballistic transport properties of quantum point contacts in series. The principle of a logic gate that finds the minimum of two quaternary number inputs is demonstrated. The device is scalable to allow multiple inputs, which makes it possible to find the minimum of multiple inputs in a single gate operation. Also, the principle of a half-adder for quaternary number inputs is demonstrated. First, an adder that adds up two quaternary numbers and outputs the sum of inputs is demonstrated. Second, a device to express the sum of the adder into two quaternary digits [Carry (first digit) and Sum (second digit)] is demonstrated. Abstract: The effect of dipolar and exchange interactions within pairs of paramagnetic electronic states on Pauli-blockade-controlled spin-dependent transport and recombination rates during magnetic resonant spin excitation is studied numerically using the superoperator Liouville-space formalism. The simulations reveal that spin-Rabi nutation induced by magnetic resonance can control transition rates which can be observed experimentally by pulsed electrically (pEDMR) and pulsed optically (pODMR) detected magnetic resonance spectroscopies. When the dipolar coupling exceeds the difference of the pair partners' Zeeman energies, several nutation frequency components can be observed, the most pronounced at sqrt{2} gamma B_1 (gamma is the gyromagnetic ratio, B_1 is the excitation field). Exchange coupling does not significantly affect this nutation component; however, it does strongly influence a low-frequency component < gamma B_1. Abstract: The rare decay K0(L) --> pi0 pi0 nu nu-bar was studied with the E391a detector at the KEK 12-GeV proton synchrotron. Based on 9.4 x 10^9 K0L decays, an upper limit of 8.1 x 10^{-7} was obtained for the branching fraction at 90% confidence level.
