BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$ (BCAO), a honeycomb cobaltate, is considered a promising candidate for materials displaying the Kitaev quantum spin liquid state. This assumption is based on the distinctive characteristics of Co$^{2+}$ ions (3$d^7$) within an octahedral crystal environment, resulting in spin-orbit-coupled $J_{\rm eff}$~=~1/2 doublet states. However, recent experimental observations and theoretical analyses have raised questions regarding this hypothesis. Despite these uncertainties, reports of continuum excitations reminiscent of spinon excitations have prompted further investigations. In this study, we explore the magnetic phases of BCAO under both in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic fields, employing dc and ac magnetic susceptibilities, capacitance, and torque magnetometry measurement. Our results affirm the existence of multiple field-induced magnetic phases, with strong anisotropy of the phase boundaries between in-plane and out-of-plane fields. To elucidate the nature of these phases, we develop a minimal anisotropic exchange model. This model, supported by combined first principles calculations and theoretical modeling, quantitatively reproduces our experimental data. In BCAO, the combination of strong bond-independent XXZ anisotropy and geometric frustration leads to significant quantum order by disorder effects that stabilize collinear phases under both zero and finite magnetic fields., Comment: 14 pages, 5 main + 5 supplementary figures

We report neutron scattering, pressure-dependent AC calorimetry, and AC magnetic susceptibility measurements of triangular lattice NaYbSe$_2$. We observe a continuum of scattering, which is reproduced by matrix product simulations, and no phase transition is detected in any bulk measurements. Comparison to heat capacity simulations suggest the material is within the Heisenberg spin liquid phase. AC Susceptibility shows a significant 23~mK downturn, indicating a gap in the magnetic spectrum. The combination of a gap with no detectable magnetic order, comparison to theoretical models, and comparison to other $A$YbSe$_2$ compounds all strongly indicate NaYbSe$_2$ is within the quantum spin liquid phase. The gap also allows us to rule out a gapless Dirac spin liquid, with a gapped $\mathbb{Z}_2$ liquid the most natural explanation., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures; 7 pages and 13 figures supplemental materials

The emergence of quantum computing technology over the last decade indicates the potential for a transformational impact in the study of quantum mechanical systems. It is natural to presume that such computing technologies would be valuable to large scientific institutions, such as United States national laboratories. However, detailed descriptions of what these institutions would like to use these computers for are limited. To help provide some initial insights into this topic, this report develops detailed use cases of how quantum computing technology could be utilized to enhance a variety of quantum physics research activities at Los Alamos National Laboratory, including quantum magnetic materials, high-temperature superconductivity and nuclear astrophysics simulations. The report discusses how current high-performance computers are used for scientific discovery today and develops detailed descriptions of the types of quantum physics simulations that Los Alamos National Laboratory scientists would like to conduct, if a sufficient computing technology became available. While the report strives to highlight the breadth of potential application areas for quantum computation, this investigation has also indicated that many more use cases exist at Los Alamos National Laboratory, which could be documented in similar detail with sufficient time and effort.

We have investigated the magnetic properties and mapped out the phase diagram of the honeycomb magnet Na2Co2TeO6 with Co 3d7 in out-of-plane magnetic fields. This material has previously been proposed to show nearest-neighbor Kitaev interactions between Co spins and maybe even Kitaev quantum spin liquid behavior in high fields. At low magnetic fields, we observe a thermal phase transition at TN = 27 K, transitioning from a paramagnetic state to a canonical ferrimagnetic state. Under the application of magnetic fields, a spin flop-like phase transition occurred before saturation of J = 1/2 between 10 K and TN. Below 10 K, a peak-dip-peak structure emerges between 10 and 17 T in the magnetic susceptibility (dM/dH) before the magnetic saturation, reminiscent of magnetic plateau behavior. The measurement of the magnetocaloric effect also shows dip-peak-dip behavior in this field range. Our data can be explained by an XXZ model with a single ion anisotropy and possibly small Kitaev and {\Gamma} exchange interactions. Ferroelectric domain walls, recognized as distinct from the bulk in terms of symmetry, structure, and electronic properties, host exotic phenomena including conductive walls, ferroelectric vortices, novel topologies, and negative capacitance. Contrary to conventional understanding, our study reveals that the structure of domain walls in HfO2 closely resembles its bulk. First, our first-principles simulations unveil that the robust ferroelectricity is supported by bosonic pairing of all the anionic phonons in bulk HfO2. Strikingly, the paired phonons strongly bond with each other and successfully reach the center of the domain wall without losing their integrity and produce bulk-like domain walls. We then confirmed preservation of the bulk phonon displacements and consequently full revival of the bulk structure at domain walls via aberration-corrected STEM. The newly found duality between the bulk and the domain wall sheds light on previously enigmatic properties such as zero-energy domain walls, perfect Ising-type polar ordering, and exceptionally robust ferroelectricity at the sub-nm scales. The phonon-pairing discovered here is robust against physical boundaries such as domain walls and enables zero momentum and zero-energy cost local ferroelectric switching. This phenomenon demonstrated in Si-compatible ferroelectrics provides a novel technological platform where data storage on domain walls is as feasible as that within the domains, thereby expanding the potential for high-density data storage and advanced ferroelectric applications., Comment: 24 pages, 4 figures

A supersolid is a quantum-entangled state of matter that exhibits the dual characteristics of superfluidity and solidity. \red{While theoretical studies have predicted that hard-core bosons with repulsive interactions on a triangular lattice can host a supersolid phase, experimental validation has remained elusive. Leveraging an exact mapping between bosons and spins, we investigate the supersolid phase in a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ triangular-lattice antiferromagnet K$_2$Co(SeO$_3$)$_2$.} Here, we present the magnetic phase diagram and neutron scattering results for K$_2$Co(SeO$_3$)$_2$, which features nearest-neighbor Ising-like interactions with $J_z = 2.96(2)$ meV and $J_{\perp} = 0.21(3)$ meV. In zero field, neutron spectroscopy reveals the gradual development of a quasi-two-dimensional $\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$ magnetic order with Z$_3$ translational symmetry breaking (solidity) below 15 K. \red{At temperatures below 0.3 K, the fully developed supersolid phase is evidenced by the coexistence of a gapless Goldstone mode arising from broken U$(1)$ spin rotational symmetry (superfluidity), and a gapped pseudo-Goldstone mode associated with lifted accidental XY degeneracy (solidity).} In $\bf c$-axis-oriented magnetic fields 1.1 T $<$ $B$ $<$ 21 T, a prominent 1/3 magnetization plateau phase emerges, accompanied by a \red{plausible} high-field supersolid phase (17 T $<$ $B$ $<$ 21 T). Our results establish K$_2$Co(SeO$_3$)$_2$as an exceptional realization of a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ triangular-lattice quantum Ising magnet, document its magnetic phase diagram featuring two supersolid phases, and uncover spectroscopic \red{signatures} of zero-field supersolidity in a triangular lattice antiferromagnet., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

A quantum spin liquid (QSL) is a state of matter characterized by fractionalized quasiparticle excitations, quantum entanglement, and a lack of long-range magnetic order. However, QSLs have evaded definitive experimental observation. Several Yb$^{3+}$-based triangular lattice antiferromagnets with effective $S$ = $\frac{1}{2}$ have been suggested to stabilize the QSL state as the ground state. Here, we build a comprehensive magnetic temperature phase diagram of a high-quality single crystalline KYbSe$_2$ via heat capacity and magnetocaloric effect down to 30 mK with magnetic field applied along the $a$-axis. At zero magnetic field, we observe the magnetic long-range order at $T_N$ = 0.29 K entering 120 degrees ordered state in heat capacity, consistent with neutron scattering studies. Analysis of the low-temperature ($T$) specific heat ($C$) at zero magnetic field indicates linear $T$-dependence of $C/T$ and a broad hump of $C/T$ in the proximate QSL region above $T_N$. By applying magnetic field, we observe the up-up-down phase with 1/3 magnetization plateau and oblique phases, in addition to two new phases. These observations strongly indicate that while KYbSe$_2$ closely exhibits characteristics resembling an ideal triangular lattice, deviations may exist, such as the effect of the next-nearest-neighbor exchange interaction, calling for careful consideration for spin Hamiltonian modeling. Further investigations into tuning parameters, such as chemical pressure, could potentially induce an intriguing QSL phase in the material.

The spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a Kagome lattice is geometrically frustrated, which is expected to promote the formation of many-body quantum entangled states. The most sought-after among these is the quantum spin liquid phase, but magnetic analogs of liquid, solid, and supersolid phases may also occur, producing fractional plateaus in the magnetization. Here, we investigate the experimental realization of these predicted phases in the Kagome material YCu3(OD)6+xBr3-x (x=0.5). By combining thermodynamic and Raman spectroscopic techniques, we provide evidence for fractionalized spinon excitations and observe the emergence of a 1/9 magnetization plateau. Continuous spin excitations are widely recognized as one of the hallmarks of novel spin states in quantum magnets, such as quantum spin liquids (QSLs). Here, we report the observation of such kind of excitations in K2Ni2(SO4)3, which consists of two sets of intersected spin-1 Ni2+ trillium lattices. Our inelastic neutron scattering measurement on single crystals clearly shows a dominant excitation continuum, which exhibits a distinct temperature-dependent behavior from that of spin waves, and is rooted in strong quantum spin fluctuations. Further using the self-consistent-gaussian-approximation method, we determined the fourth- and fifth-nearest neighbor exchange interactions are dominant. These two bonds together form a unique three-dimensional network of corner-sharing tetrahedra, which we name as ''hyper-trillium'' lattice. The 3$d^7$ Co$^{2+}$-based insulating magnet \NCTO{} has recently been reported to have strong Kitaev interactions on a honeycomb lattice, and is thus being considered as a Kitaev quantum spin liquid candidate. However, due to the existence of other types of interactions, a spontaneous long-range magnetic order occurs. This order is suppressed by applied magnetic fields leading to a succession of phases and ultimately saturation of the magnetic moments. The precise phase diagram, the nature of the phases, and the possibility that one of the field-induced phases is a Kitaev quantum spin liquid phase are still a matter of debate. Here we measured an extensive set of physical properties to build the complete temperature-field phase diagrams to magnetic saturation at 10 T for magnetic fields along the $a$- and $a^*$-axes, and a partial phase diagram up to 60 T along $c$. We probe the phases using magnetization, specific heat, magnetocaloric effect, magnetostriction, dielectric constant, and electric polarization, which is a symmetry-sensitive probe. With these measurements we identify all the previously incomplete phase boundaries and find new high-field phase boundaries. We find strong magnetoelectric coupling in the dielectric constant and moderate magnetostrictive coupling at several phase boundaries. Furthermore, we detect the symmetry of the magnetic order using electrical polarization measurements under magnetic fields. We present a high-field study of the strongly anisotropic easy-plane square lattice $S$ = 2 quantum magnet Ba$_{2}$FeSi$_{2}$O$_{7}$. This compound is a rare high-spin antiferromagnetic system with very strong easy-plane anisotropy, such that the interplay between spin level crossings and antiferromagnetic order can be studied. We observe a magnetic field-induced spin level crossing occurring within an ordered state. This spin level crossing appears to preserve the magnetic symmetry while producing a non-monotonic dependence the order parameter magnitude. The resulting temperature-magnetic field phase diagram exhibits two dome-shaped regions of magnetic order overlapping around 30 T. The ground state of the lower-field dome is predominantly a linear combination of $| S^{z} = 0 \rangle$ and $ |S^{z} = 1 \rangle$ states, while the ground state of the higher-field dome can be approximated by a linear combination of $| S^{z} = 1 \rangle $ and $ | S^{z} = 2\rangle$ states. At 30 T, where the spin levels cross, the magnetization exhibits a slanted plateau, {\color {black}the magnetocaloric effect shows a broad hump, and the electric polarization shows a weak slope change}. We determined the detailed magnetic phase boundaries and the spin level crossings using measurements of magnetization, electric polarization, and the magnetocaloric effect in pulsed magnetic fields to 60 T. We calculate these properties using a mean field theory based on direct products of SU(5) coherent states and find good agreement. Finally, we measure and calculate the magnetically-induced electric polarization that reflects magnetic ordering and spin level crossings. The single-molecule magnet {Mn84} is a challenge to theory due to its high nuclearity. Building on our prior work which characterized the structure of the spectrum of this magnet, we directly compute two experimentally accessible observables, the field-dependent magnetization up to 75 T and the temperature-dependent heat capacity, using parameter free theory. In particular, we use first principles calculations to derive short- and long-range exchange interactions, while we compute the exact partition function of the resulting classical Potts and Ising spin models for all 84 Mn $S=2$ spins to obtain the observables. The latter computation is possible because of a simulation methodology that uses hyper-optimized tensor network contraction, borrowing from recent techniques developed to simulate quantum supremacy circuits. We also synthesize the magnet and measure its heat capacity and field-dependent magnetization. We observe good qualitative agreement between theory and experiment, identifying an unusual peak in the heat capacity in both, as well as a plateau in the magnetization. Our work also identifies some limitations of current theoretical modeling in large magnets, such as the sensitivity to small, long-range, exchange couplings., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures. We report the magnetization ($\chi$, $M$), specific heat ($C_{\text{P}}$), and neutron powder diffraction results on a quasi-two-dimensional $S$ = 2 square lattice antiferromagnet Ba$_2$FeSi$_2$O$_7$ consisting of FeO$_4$ tetragons with a large compressive distortion (27%). Despite of the quasi-two-dimensional lattice structure, both $\chi$ and $C_{\text{P}}$ present three dimensional magnetic long-range order below the N\'eel temperature $T_{\text{N}}$ = 5.2 K. Neutron diffraction data shows a collinear $Q_{m}$ = (1,0,0.5) antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure with the in-plane ordered magnetic moment suppressed by 26% below $T_{\text{N}}$. Both the AFM structure and the suppressed moments are well explained by the Monte Carlo simulation with a large single-ion ab-plane anisotropy $D$ = 1.4 meV and a rather small in-plane Heisenberg exchange $J_{\text{intra}}$ = 0.15 meV. The characteristic two dimensional spin fluctuations can be recognized in the magnetic entropy release and diffuse scattering above $T_{\text{N}}$. This new quasi-2D magnetic system also displays unusual non-monotonic dependence of the $T_{\text{N}}$ as a function of magnetic field $H$., Comment: 23 pages

Erythrosiderites with the formula A2FeX5H2O, where A = Rb, K, and (NH4) and X = Cl and Br are intriguing systems that possess various magnetic and electric phases, as well as multiferroic phases in which magnetism and ferroelectricity are coupled. In this report, we study the magnetic phase diagram of erythrosiderites as a function of superexchange interactions. To this end, we perform classical Monte Carlo simulations on magnetic Hamiltonians that contain five different superexchange interactions with single-ion anisotropies. Our phase diagram contains all magnetic ground states that have been experimentally observed in these materials. We argue that the ground states can be explained by varying the ratio of J4/J2. For J4/J2 > 0.95 a cycloidal spins structure is stabilized as observed in (NH4)2FeCl5H2O and otherwise, a collinear spin structure is stabilized as observed in (K,Rb)2FeCl5H2O. We also show that the difference in the single-ion anisotropy along a- and c- axes is essential to stabilize the intermediate state observed in (NH)2FeCl5H2O., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, submitted

We report a comprehensive inelastic neutron scattering study of the hybrid molecule-based multiferroic compound (ND4)2FeCl5D2O in the zero-field incommensurate cycloidal phase and the high-field quasi-collinear phase. The spontaneous electric polarization changes its direction concurrently with the field-induced magnetic transition, from mostly aligned with the crystallographic a-axis to the c-axis. To account for such change of polarization direction, the underlying multiferroic mechanism was proposed to switch from the spin-current model induced via the inverse Dzyalloshinskii-Moriya interaction to the p-d hybridization model. We perform a detailed analysis of the inelastic neutron data of (ND4)2FeCl5D2O using linear spin-wave theory to quantify magnetic interaction strengths and investigate possible impact of different multiferroic mechanisms on the magnetic couplings. Our result reveals that the spin dynamics of both multiferroic phases can be well-described by a Heisenberg Hamiltonian with an easy-plane anisotropy. We do not find notable differences between the optimal model parameters of the two phases. The hierarchy of exchange couplings and the balance among frustrated interactions remain the same between two phases, suggesting that magnetic interactions in (ND4)2FeCl5D2O are much more robust than the electric polarization in response to delicate reorganizations of the electronic degrees of freedom in an applied magnetic field., Comment: 18 pages, 4 main figures, 1 Table

Magnetoelectric materials are attractive for several applications, including actuators, switches, and magnetic field sensors. Typical mechanisms for achieving a strong magnetoelectric coupling are rooted in transition metal magnetism. In sharp contrast, here we identify CsEr(MoO4)2 as a magnetoelectric material without magnetic transition metal ions, thus ensuring that the Er ions play a key role in achieving this interesting property. Our detailed study includes measurements of the structural, magnetic, and electric properties of this material. Bulk characterization and neutron powder diffraction show no evidence for structural phase transitions down to 0.3 K and therefore CsEr(MoO4)2 maintains the room temperature P2/c space group over a wide temperature range without external magnetic field. These same measurements also identify collinear antiferromagnetic ordering of the Er3+ moments below TN = 0.87 K. Complementary dielectric constant and pyroelectric current measurements reveal that a ferroelectric phase (P ~ 0.5 nC/cm2) emerges when applying a modest external magnetic field, which indicates that this material has a strong magnetoelectric coupling. By combining single crystal x-ray and neutron diffraction, and the magnetodielectric measurements on single crystal Fe4Nb2O9, we present the magnetic structure and the symmetry-allowed magnetoelectric coupling in Fe4Nb2O9. It undergoes an antiferromagnetic transition at TN=93 K, followed by a displacive transition at TS=70 K. The temperature-dependent dielectric constant of Fe4Nb2O9 is strongly anisotropic with the first anomaly at 93 K due to the exchange striction as a result of the long range spin order, and the second one at 70 K emanating from the structural phase transition primarily driven by the O atomic displacements. Magneticfield induced magnetoelectric coupling was observed in single crystal Fe4Nb2O9 and is compatible with the solved magnetic structure that is characteristic of antiferromagnetically arranged ferromagnetic chains in the honeycomb plane. We propose that such magnetic symmetry should be immune to external magnetic fields to some extent favored by the freedom of rotation of moments in the honeycomb plane, laying out a promising system to control the magnetoelectric properties by magnetic fields.

Through analysis of single crystal neutron diffraction data, we present the magnetic structures of magnetoelectric Co4Nb2O9 under various magnetic fields. In zero-field, neutron diffraction experiments below TN=27 K reveal that the Co2+ moments order primarily along the a* direction without any spin canting along the c axis, manifested by the magnetic symmetry C2/c'. The moments of nearest neighbor Co atoms order ferromagnetically with a small cant away from the next nearest neighbor Co moments along the c axis. In the applied magnetic field H//a, three magnetic domains were aligned with their major magnetic moments perpendicular to the magnetic field with no indication of magnetic phase transitions. The influences of magnetic fields on the magnetic structures associated with the observed magnetoelectric coupling are discussed.

A topological superconductor features at its boundaries and vortices Majorana fermions, which are potentially applicable for topological quantum computations. The scarcity of the known experimentally verified physical systems with topological superconductivity, time-reversal invariant ones in particular, is giving rise to a strong demand for identifying new candidate materials. In this research, we study a heterostructure consisting of a transition metal oxide two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) sandwiched by insulators near the paraelectric (PE) / ferroelectric (FE) phase transition. Its relevant characteristics is the combination of the transition metal spin-orbit coupling and the soft odd-parity phonons arising from the ferroelectric fluctuation; it gives rise to the fluctuating Rashba effect, which can mediate the pairing interaction for time-reversal invariant topological superconductivity. As the PE / FE phase transition can be driven by applying strain on the heterostructure, this system provides a tunable electron-phonon coupling. Through the first-principle calculations on the (001) [BaOsO3][BaTiO3]4, we find such electron-phonon coupling to be strong over a wide range of applied tensile bi-axial strain in the monolayer BaOsO3 sandwiched between the (001) BaTiO3, hence qualifying it as a good candidate material. Furthermore, the stability of topological superconductivity in this material is enhanced by its orbital physics that gives rise to the anisotropic dispersion., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables

The geometrically frustrated two dimensional triangular lattice magnets A${_4}$B'B${_2}$O$_{12}$ (A = Ba, Sr, La; B' = Co, Ni, Mn; B = W, Re) have been studied by x-ray diffraction, AC and DC susceptibilities, powder neutron diffraction, and specific heat measurements. The results reveal that (i) the samples containing Co$^{2+}$ (effective spin-1/2) and Ni$^{2+}$ (spin-1) ions with small spin numbers exhibit ferromagnetic (FM) ordering while the sample containing Mn$^{2+}$ (spin-5/2) ions with a large spin number exhibits antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering. We ascribe these spin number manipulated ground states to the competition between the AFM B'-O-O-B' and FM B'-O-B-O-B' superexchange interactions; (ii) the chemical pressure introduced into the Co containing samples through the replacement of different size ions on the A site finely tunes the FM ordering temperature of the system. We attribute this effect to the modification of the FM interaction strength induced by the change of the O-B-O angle through chemical pressure., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures

Ba$_3$Mn$_2$O$_8$ is a geometrically frustrated spin dimer compound. We investigate the effect of site disorder on the zero field phase diagram of this material by considering the solid solution Ba$_{3}$(Mn$_{1-x}$V$_{x}$)$_{2}$O$_{8}$, where nonmagnetic V$^{5+}$ ions partially substitute magnetic Mn$^{5+}$ ions. This substitution results in unpaired $S=1$ moments for half-substituted dimers, which are ungapped and therefore susceptible to types of magnetic order not present in the parent compound. AC susceptibility measurements of compositions between $x=0.046$ and $x=0.84$ show a sharp frequency- and composition-dependent kink at temperatures below 210mK, suggesting that unpaired spins form a spin glass. The case for a glassy state is made clearer by the absence of any sharp features in the specific heat. However, Ba$_{3}$(Mn$_{1-x}$V$_{x}$)$_{2}$O$_{8}$ is not a paradigmatic spin glass. Whereas both the freezing temperature and the Weiss temperature (determined from susceptibility above 1K) vary strongly as a function of composition, the heat capacity per unpaired spin is found to be insensitive (above the glass transition) to the density of unpaired spins for the broad regime $0.18\leq x \leq 0.84$. This surprising result is consistent with a scenario in which nearest-neighbor unpaired spins form local, possibly fluctuating, spin-singlets prior to the eventual spin freezing. The spin glass state is only found for temperatures below the energy scale of single-ion anisotropy, suggestive this plays a significant role in determining the eventual ground state. Possible ground states in the "dilute" limit ($x < 0.04$ and $x > 0.9$) are also discussed., Comment: (9 pages, 5 figures)

We present the structural and magnetic properties of a new compound family, Mg$_2$RE$_3$Sb$_3$O$_{14}$ (RE = Gd, Dy, Er), with a hitherto unstudied frustrating lattice, the "tripod kagome" structure. Susceptibility (ac, dc) and specific heat exhibit features that are understood within a simple Luttinger-Tisza type theory. For RE = Gd, we found long ranged order (LRO) at 1.65 K, which is consistent with a 120 $^{\circ}$ structure, demonstrating the importance of diople interactions for this 2D Heisenberg system. For RE = Dy, LRO at 0.37 K is related to the "kagome spin ice (KSI)" physics for a 2D system. This result shows that the tripod kagome structure accelerates the transition to LRO predicted for the related pyrochlore systems.
