1. Educational pathfinders? : a study of international student mobility in China

Abstract

To date, a significant body of qualitative scholarship on international student mobility has centred around migration flows to 'Western' destinations, particularly to Anglophone and/or European nations. On the contrary, educational migration from these established destination regions to newly emerging study abroad destinations is a relatively recent phenomenon and, consequently, remains eminently under-researched. To fill this gap in our knowledge, I discuss the findings of a qualitative study into European and North American students undertaking an English-taught undergraduate degree in China. Using literature from human geography, sociology, education, migration studies and tourism studies, this thesis explores the ways in which 'Western' transnational students engage with, and make meaning of, cross-border mobility, transnational higher education, and cosmopolitanism in neoliberal times. Drawing on a thematic analysis of in-depth interviews and social media content, I seek to understand the narratives that international students from Anglophone and European countries create and share during their study abroad experiences in China. The findings of this empirical research reveal that transnational students' desires for mobility constitute variegated combinations of economic and non-economic (i.e., personal, emotional, and intangible) considerations. Regardless of how students' motivations vary, in reflecting on their experiences of a 'less-taken' path, transnational students predominantly drew on neoliberal discourse of cosmopolitanism as an imperative part of the ongoing construction of the self as well as a narrative strategy to set themselves apart from others. In particular, visual and textual narratives on social media created by transnational students call for the need to conceptualise them as actively producing, performing, and curating cosmopolitan sensibilities while actively consuming the imagined and experienced differences of the host society. This study concludes by asserting the value of studying the emerging mobility of transnational students from the 'West' and its contribution to a wider project of understanding and intervening in international education's social, economic, and cultural role in the modern world.

3. Reflections on Decolonizing Peace Education in Korea: A Critique and Some Decolonial Pedagogic Strategies

Abstract

Universities and scholars around the world teach and research extensively in the field of peace education; yet, despite a plethora of diverse scholarship, educational programs are often critiqued as dominated by the English-speaking world. This paper employs the intersecting lenses of decolonization and postcolonial theory to explore and challenge the perceived dominance of Western literature and practice. Using a criss-crossing comparison method, English and Korean literatures are compared to ascertain the extent of Western-centricity within Korean higher education peace studies, and to offer a critical discussion of liberal peacebuilding, and linear problem-solving models within the literatures. Counter-arguments and policy recommendations are considered. The paper concludes that for peace education to fulfill its mission, global educational decolonization movements need to be strengthened. It is argued that efforts toward decolonization of Korean peace education could support the global movement toward a more socially just peace education for the twenty-first century.

4. Understanding Sino-Singapore educational exchanges: international student mobility and cross-border knowledge production.

Abstract

This paper delves into the evolving academic and educational dynamics between Singapore and China, highlighting their mutually reinforcing relationship. It examines both historical connections and current academic linkages, focusing on the key factors driving Chinese international student migration to Singapore. The paper details diplomatic and economic connections that have led to educational exchanges and migration, emphasising how early interactions laid the groundwork for robust training and educational cooperation. Furthermore, it underscores the substantial presence of Chinese students in Singapore's tertiary education and the distinctive attributes that make Singapore a sought-after study destination in Southeast Asia—such as the city-state’s approach to higher education prioritising human capital development over tuition revenue generation, the global reputation of its higher education institutions, English-speaking environment, and promising career prospects due to the presence of multinational companies. Finally, the paper explores cross-border academic mobility and joint knowledge production between the two countries. In doing so, it seeks to augment the existing understanding of regional student mobility and knowledge production, shedding light on the evolving dynamics between China and Singapore within the domain of higher education. 5. Beyond fare evasion: the everyday moralities of non-payment and underpayment on public transport.

Abstract

In attempting to understand and prevent fare evasion, existing research and policy have often categorised fare evaders based on passenger 'types' or profiles. However, such categorisations of 'malicious' or 'virtuous' behaviours rely on underlying moral claims which often go unexamined. In this paper, we study how different actors construct such moral claims as part of everyday interactions. We demonstrate that the everyday moralities of not or under-paying are diverse, locally occasioned, and emotionally charged. Drawing on social media and video data from Chile and the UK, we examine interactions between passengers, by-standers, transport workers, and transport operators. We highlight the diverse resources that actors draw upon to construct moral claims around fare evasion, including the mobilisation of alternative moral categories; attempts to produce exceptions to formal rules; and the foregrounding of moral emotions. The paper engages with an interdisciplinary body of work which reassesses existing policies and societal responses to fare evasion, while also contributing to a nascent literature on everyday morality and mobilities. Abstract

Refractive error, measured here as mean spherical equivalent (SER), is a complex eye condition caused by both genetic and environmental factors. Individuals with strong positive or negative values of SER require spectacles or other approaches for vision correction. Common genetic risk factors have been identified by genome-wide association studies (GWAS), but a great part of the refractive error heritability is still missing. Some of this heritability may be explained by rare variants (minor allele frequency [MAF] ≤ 0.01.). We performed multiple gene-based association tests of mean Spherical Equivalent with rare variants in exome array data from the Consortium for Refractive Error and Myopia (CREAM). The dataset consisted of over 27,000 total subjects from five cohorts of Indo-European and Eastern Asian ethnicity. We identified 129 unique genes associated with refractive error, many of which were replicated in multiple cohorts. Our best novel candidates included the retina expressed PDCD6IP, the circadian rhythm gene PER3, and P4HTM, which affects eye morphology. Future work will include functional studies and validation. Identification of genes contributing to refractive error and future understanding of their function may lead to better treatment and prevention of refractive errors, which themselves are important risk factors for various blinding conditions. peerReviewed

11. On the hospital volume and outcome relationship: does specialization matter more than volume?

Abstract

Objective. To evaluate the relationship between hospital volume and outcome by focusing on alternative measures of volume that capture specialization and overall throughput of hospitals. Data Sources/Study Setting. Hospital administrative data from the state of Victoria, Australia; data contain 1,798,474 admitted episodes reported by 135 public and private acute-care hospitals. Study Design. This study contrasts the volume-outcome relationship using regression models with different measures of volume; two-step and single-step risk-adjustment methods are used. Data Collection/Extraction Methods. The sample is restricted to ischemic heart disease (IHD) patients (ICD-10 codes: 120-125) admitted during 2001/02 to 2004/05. Principal Findings. Overall hospital throughput and degree of specialization display more substantive implications for the volume-outcome relationship than conventional caseload volume measure. Two-step estimation when corrected for heteroscedasticity produces comparable results to single-step methods. Conclusions. Different measures of volume could lead to vastly different conclusions about the volume-outcome relationship. Hospital specialization and throughput should both be included as measures of volume to capture the notion of size, focus, and possible congestion effects. Key Words. Abstract

Corneal curvature, a highly heritable trait, is a key clinical endophenotype for myopia - a major cause of visual impairment and blindness in the world. Here we present a trans-ethnic meta-analysis of corneal curvature GWAS in 44,042 individuals of Caucasian and Asian with replication in 88,218 UK Biobank data. We identified 47 loci (of which 26 are novel), with population-specific signals as well as shared signals across ethnicities. Some identified variants showed precise scaling in corneal curvature and eye elongation (i.e. axial length) to maintain eyes in emmetropia (i.e. HDAC11/FBLN2 rs2630445, RBP3 rs11204213); others exhibited association with myopia with little pleiotropic effects on eye elongation. Implicated genes are involved in extracellular matrix organization, developmental process for body and eye, connective tissue cartilage and glycosylation protein activities. Our study provides insights into population-specific novel genes for corneal curvature, and their pleiotropic effect in regulating eye size or conferring susceptibility to myopia.

Abstract

This qualitative study offers an exploration of the ways in which transnational, degree-seeking, undergraduate students from Anglophone and European countries make sense of their experiences of studying in China. Through an analysis of participants' verbal, visual, and textual narratives recounted in interviews and participants' social media postings, the paper examines how Western-situated transnational students attempt to differentiate themselves from various 'Others' – other types of international students, as well as immobile Others in both home and host countries. Findings point out that there is a dominant image of the bona fide cosmopolitan, which study participants aspired to be, and hence tried continuously to (re)produce through mobility. In critically reflecting on the transnational students' performance of bona fide cosmopolitanism, this paper addresses issues related to how Western-situated international students create various Others and simultaneously consume difference. The Oxygen and Volatile Extraction Node (OVEN) is a subsystem within the Regolith & Environment Science and Oxygen & Lunar Volatile Extraction (RESOLVE) project. The purpose of the OVEN subsystem is to release volatiles from lunar regolith and extract oxygen by means of a hydrogen reduction reaction. The complete process includes receiving, weighing, sealing, heating, and disposing of core sample segments while transferring all gaseous contents to the Lunar Advanced Volatile Analysis (LAVA) subsystem. This document will discuss the design and performance of the OVEN Field Demonstration Unit (FDU), which participated in the 2012 RESOLVE field demonstration.

The goal of this project is to achieve a validated General Aviation Pilot Advisor and Training System (GAPATS) engineering prototype, implemented according to commercial software standards and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issues of certification. Phase 2 builds on progress during Phase 1, which exceeded proposed objectives. The basic technology has been transferred from previous NASA research (1989 to 1994). We anticipate a commercially licensable prototype, validated by pilots in a flight simulator and in a light twin-engine research aircraft for FAA certification, by January 1998.

This article presents information on various situations related to Christmas. A week before Christmas, a wife told her husband, that he had a wonderful dream last night. She told that she dreamed her husband gave her $200 to spend on a new Christmas wardrobe. One would not want to do anything to spoil a perfect dream like that, would one. In an another situation in one holiday season, a woman ran out of cards at the last minute and sent her young daughter off to buy a dozen or so. The girl returned with a box of identical cards, and without bothering to look at them, the mother immediately signed ten of them and put them in the mail. Finally, she was able to sit down and actually read the verse on one of the remaining cards. Also an Easterner went West to purchase a ranch in a joint venture with some partners. After a while, an old friend from back home called to set up a visit, and he asked the name of the spread. "We had a terrible time deciding on a name," the new rancher admitted. "So now we just call it the Lazy- Z, Triple-M-Diamond," the friend gulped.

Abstract

Identified genetic loci for C-peptide and age at diagnosis (AAD) in individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D) explain only a small proportion of their variation. Here, we aimed to perform large metagenome-wide association studies (GWAS) of C-peptide and AAD in T1D; and to identify the HLA allele/haplotypes associated with C-peptide and AAD. 7,252 and 7,923 European individuals with T1D were included in C-peptide and AAD GWAS, respectively. HLA-DQB1*06:02 which is strongly protective against T1D was associated with higher C-peptide. HLA-DQB1*03:02, HLADRB1*03:01 and HLA-A*24:02 which increase T1D risk were independently associated with younger AAD. HLA-DR3-DR4 haplotype combination, the strongest T1D susceptibility factor, was associated with younger AAD. Outside HLA region, rs115673528 on Chr5 (GABRG2) was associated with C-peptide, and an indel, rs111970692, on Chr15 within CTSH, a known T1D locus, was associated with AAD. Genetically predicted CTSH expression, methylation and protein levels were associated with AAD; Mendelian randomization analysis suggested that higher levels of procathepsin H reduce AAD. In conclusion, some HLA allele/haplotypes associated with T1D also contribute to variability of C-peptide and AAD. Outside HLA, T1D loci are generally not associated with C-peptide or AAD.
