Langmuir monolayers are advantageous systems used to investigate how lipid membranes get involved in the physiology of many living structures, such as collapse phenomena in alveolar structures. Much work focuses on characterizing the pressure-bearing capacity of Langmuir films, expressed in the form of isotherm curves. These show that monolayers experience different phases during compression with an according evolution of their mechanical response, incurring into instability events when a critical stress threshold is overcome. Although well-known state equations, which establish an inverse relationship between surface pressure and area change, are able to describe monolayer behavior during liquid expanded phase, the modelling of their nonlinear behavior in the subsequent condensed region is still an open issue. In this regard, efforts are addressed to explain out-of-plane collapse by modeling buckling and wrinkling mainly resorting to linearly elastic plate theory. However, some experiments on Langmuir monolayers also show in-plane instability phenomena leading to the formation of the so-called shear bands and, to date, no theoretical description of the onset of shear banding bifurcation in monolayers has been yet provided. For this reason, by adopting a macroscopic description, we here study material stability of the monolayers and exploit an incremental approach to find the conditions that kindle shear bands. By starting from the widely assumed hypothesis that monolayers behave elastically in the solid-like region, a hyperfoam hyperelastic potential is introduced as a new constitutive strategy to trace back the nonlinear response of monolayer response during densification. In this way, the obtained mechanical properties together with the adopted strain energy are successfully employed to reproduce the onset of shear banding exhibited by some lipid systems under different conditions.

We present a study of a directional search for Dark Matter boosted forward when scattered by cosmic-ray nuclei, using a module of the NEWSdm experiment. The boosted Dark Matter flux at the edge of the Earth's atmosphere is expected to be pointing to the Galactic Center, with a flux 15 to 20 times larger than in the transverse direction. The module of the NEWSdm experiment consists of a 10 kg stack of Nano Imaging Trackers, i.e.~newly developed nuclear emulsions with AgBr crystal sizes down to a few tens of nanometers. The module is installed on an equatorial telescope. The relatively long recoil tracks induced by boosted Dark Matter, combined with the nanometric granularity of the emulsion, result in an extremely low background. This makes an installation at the INFN Gran Sasso laboratory, both on the surface and underground, viable. A comparison between the two locations is made. The angular distribution of nuclear recoils induced by boosted Dark Matter in the emulsion films at the surface laboratory is expected to show an excess with a factor of 3.5 in the direction of the Galactic Center. This excess allows for a Dark Matter search with directional sensitivity. The surface laboratory configuration prevents the deterioration of the signal in the rock overburden and it emerges as the most powerful approach for a directional observation of boosted Dark Matter with high sensitivity. We show that, with this approach, a 10 kg module of the NEWSdm experiment exposed for one year at the Gran Sasso surface laboratory can probe Dark Matter masses between 1 keV/c$^2$ and 1 GeV/c$^2$ and cross-section values down to $10^{-30}$~cm$^2$ with a directional sensitive search., Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures, updated references, clarified discussion in intro section. Dark photons are hypothetical massive vector particles that could mix with ordinary photons. The simplest theoretical model is fully characterised by only two parameters: the mass of the dark photon m$_{\gamma^{\mathrm{D}}}$ and its mixing parameter with the photon, $\varepsilon$. The sensitivity of the SHiP detector is reviewed for dark photons in the mass range between 0.002 and 10 GeV. Different production mechanisms are simulated, with the dark photons decaying to pairs of visible fermions, including both leptons and quarks. Exclusion contours are presented and compared with those of past experiments. The SHiP detector is expected to have a unique sensitivity for m$_{\gamma^{\mathrm{D}}}$ ranging between 0.8 and 3.3$^{+0.2}_{-0.5}$ GeV, and $\varepsilon^2$ ranging between $10^{-11}$ and $10^{-17}$.

We propose to build and operate a detector that, for the first time, will measure the process $pp\to\nu X$ at the LHC and search for feebly interacting particles (FIPs) in an unexplored domain. The TI18 tunnel has been identified as a suitable site to perform these measurements due to very low machine-induced background. The detector will be off-axis with respect to the ATLAS interaction point (IP1) and, given the pseudo-rapidity range accessible, the corresponding neutrinos will mostly come from charm decays: the proposed experiment will thus make the first test of the heavy flavour production in a pseudo-rapidity range that is not accessible by the current LHC detectors. In order to efficiently reconstruct neutrino interactions and identify their flavour, the detector will combine in the target region nuclear emulsion technology with scintillating fibre tracking layers and it will adopt a muon identification system based on scintillating bars that will also play the role of a hadronic calorimeter. The time of flight measurement will be achieved thanks to a dedicated timing detector. Direct Dark Matter searches are nowadays one of the most fervid research topics with many experimental efforts devoted to the search for nuclear recoils induced by the scattering of Weakly Interactive Massive Particles (WIMPs). Detectors able to reconstruct the direction of the nucleus recoiling against the scattering WIMP are opening a new frontier to possibly extend Dark Matter searches beyond the neutrino background. Exploiting directionality would also prove the galactic origin of Dark Matter with an unambiguous signal-to-background separation. Indeed, the angular distribution of recoiled nuclei is centered around the direction of the Cygnus constellation, while the background distribution is expected to be isotropic. Current directional experiments are based on gas TPC whose sensitivity is limited by the small achievable detector mass. The SHiP experiment is designed to search for very weakly interacting particles beyond the Standard Model which are produced in a 400 GeV/c proton beam dump at the CERN SPS. An essential task for the experiment is to keep the Standard Model background level to less than 0.1 event after $2\times 10^{20}$ protons on target. In the beam dump, around $10^{11}$ muons will be produced per second. The muon rate in the spectrometer has to be reduced by at least four orders of magnitude to avoid muon-induced combinatorial background. A novel active muon shield is used to magnetically deflect the muons out of the acceptance of the spectrometer. At low redshift, a handful of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have been discovered with peak luminosities ($L_{\rm iso} < 10^{48.5}~\rm{erg\,s}^{-1}$) substantially lower than the average of the more distant ones ($L_{\rm iso} > 10^{49.5}~\rm{erg\,s}^{-1}$). The properties of several low-luminosity (low-$L$) GRBs indicate that they can be due to shock break-out, as opposed to the emission from ultrarelativistic jets. Owing to this, it is highly debated how both populations are connected, and whether there is a continuum between them. The burst at redshift $z=0.283$ from 2012 April 22 is one of the very few examples of intermediate-$L$ GRBs with a $\gamma$-ray luminosity of $L\sim10^{48.9}~\rm{erg\,s}^{-1}$ that have been detected up to now. Together with the robust detection of its accompanying supernova SN 2012bz, it has the potential to answer important questions on the origin of low- and high-$L$ GRBs and the GRB-SN connection. We carried out a spectroscopy campaign using medium- and low-resolution spectrographs at 6--10-m class telescopes, covering the time span of 37.3 days, and a multi-wavelength imaging campaign from radio to X-ray energies over a duration of $\sim270$ days. Furthermore, we used a tuneable filter centred at H$\alpha$ to map star formation in the host galaxy and the surrounding galaxies. We used these data to extract and model the properties of different radiation components and incorporate spectral-energy-distribution fitting techniques to extract the properties of the host galaxy. Modelling the light curve and spectral energy distribution from the radio to the X-rays revealed the blast-wave to expand with an initial Lorentz factor of $\Gamma_0\sim60$, low for a high-$L$ GRB, and that the afterglow had an exceptional low peak luminosity-density of $\lesssim2\times10^{30}~\rm{erg\,s}^{-1}\,\rm{Hz}^{-1}$ in the sub-mm. We study the hadronic form factors of $\tau$ lepton decays $\tau \to K \pi(\eta) \nu$. We compute one loop corrections to the form factors using the chiral Lagrangian including vector mesons. The counterterms which subtract the divergence of the one-loop amplitudes are determined by using background field method. In the vector form factor, $K^\ast$ resonance behavior is reproduced because the diagram with a vector meson propagator is included. We fit the data of the hadronic invariant mass spectrum measured by Belle by determining some of the counterterms of the Lagrangian. Besides the hadronic invariant mass spectrum, the forward-backward asymmetry is predicted. We also study the effect of CP violation of a two Higgs doublet model. In the model, CP violation of the neutral Higgs sector generates the mixing of CP even Higgs and CP odd Higgs. We show how the mixing leads to the direct CP violation of the $\tau$ decays and predict the CP violation of the forward-backward asymmetry., Comment: 51pages, 16figures. We study LHC phenomenology of mirage mediation scenario in which anomaly and modulus contributions to soft SUSY breaking terms are comparable to each other. A Monte Carlo study of mirage mediation, with model parameters $\alpha=1$,$ M_0=500$ GeV, $n_M=1/2$, $n_H=1$ and $\rm{tan}\beta=10$, is presented. It is shown that masses of supersymmetric particles can be measured in a model independent way, providing information on SUSY breaking sector. In particular, the mass ratio of gluino to the lightest neutralino for the benchmark scenario is determined to be $1.9 \lesssim m_{\tildeg}/m_{\tilde\chi_1^0} \lesssim 3.1$, well reproducing theoretical input value of $m_{\tilde g}/m_{\tilde\chi_1^0} \simeq 2.5$ which is quite distinctive from the predictions $m_{\tilde g}/m_{\tilde\chi_1^0} \gtrsim 6$ of other SUSY scenarios in which gaugino masses are unified at the GUT scale. The model parameters of mirage mediation can be also determined from various kinematic distributions.

We study the phenomenology of neutralino dark matter (DM) in mirage mediation scenario of supersymmetry breaking which results from the moduli stabilization in some string/brane models. Depending upon the model parameters, especially the anomaly to modulus mediation ratio determined by the moduli stabilization mechanism, the nature of the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) changes from Bino-like neutralino to Higgsino-like one via Bino-Higgsino mixing region. For the Bino-like LSP, the standard thermal production mechanism can give a right amount of relic DM density through the stop/stau-neutralino coannihilation or the pseudo-scalar Higgs resonance process. We also examine the prospect of direct and indirect DM detection in various parameter regions of mirage mediation. Neutralino DM in galactic halo might be detected by near future direct detection experiments in the case of Bino-Higgsino mixed LSP. The gamma ray flux from Galactic Center might be detectable also if the DM density profile takes a cuspy shape., Comment: One reference added

Certain surfactant monolayers at the water-air interface have been found to undergo, at a critical surface pressure, a dynamic instability involving multiple long folds of micron width. We exploit the sharp monolayer translations accompanying folding events to acquire, using a combination of fluorescence microscopy and digital image analysis, detailed statistics concerning the folding dynamics. The motions have a broad distribution of magnitudes and narrow, non-Gaussian distributions of angles and durations. The statistics are consistent with the occurrence of cooperative cascades of folds, implying an autocatalytic process uncommon in the context of mechanical instability., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

The pearling instability of bilayer surfactant tubes was recently observed during the collapse of fluid monolayers of binary mixtures of DMPC$-$POPG and DPPC$-$POPG surfactants. We suggested it has the same physics as the well-known Raleigh instability under the action of the bilayer surface tension whose magnitude is dictated by the electrostatic interaction between charged surfactants. In this paper, we calculate the relaxation of charge molecules during the deformation of the tubes into pearling structure. We find the functional dependence of the relaxation energy on the screening length $\kappa^{-1}$ explicitly. Relaxation effect lowers the cost of bending a tube into pearls making the cylindrical tube even more unstable. It is known that for weak screening case where the tube radius is smaller than the screening length of the solution, this relaxation effect is important. However, for the case of strong screening it is negligible. For the experiments mentioned, the situation is marginal. In this case, we show this relaxation effect remains small. We theoretically study the topography of a biphasic surfactant monolayer in the vicinity of domain boundaries. The differing elastic properties of the two phases generally lead to a nonflat topography of ``mesas'', where domains of one phase are elevated with respect to the other phase. The mesas are steep but low, having heights of up to 10 nm. As the monolayer is laterally compressed, the mesas develop overhangs and eventually become unstable at a surface tension of about K(dc)^2 (dc being the difference in spontaneous curvature and K a bending modulus). In addition, the boundary is found to undergo a topography-induced rippling instability upon compression, if its line tension is smaller than about K(dc). The effect of diffuse boundaries on these features and the topographic behavior near a critical point are also examined. We discuss the relevance of our findings to several experimental observations related to surfactant monolayers: (i) small topographic features recently found near domain boundaries; (ii) folding behavior observed in mixed phospholipid monolayers and model lung surfactants; (iii) roughening of domain boundaries seen under lateral compression; (iv) the absence of biphasic structures in tensionless surfactant films., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, using RevTeX and epsf, submitted to Phys Rev E

We study the conformation of a heterogeneous surfactant monolayer at a fluid-fluid interface, near a boundary between two lateral regions of differing elastic properties. The monolayer attains a conformation of shallow, steep `mesas' with a height difference of up to 10 nm. If the monolayer is progressively compressed (e.g. in a Langmuir trough), the profile develops overhangs and finally becomes unstable at a surface tension of about K(delta c_0)^2, where (delta c_0) is the difference in spontaneous curvature and K a bending stiffness. We study the distribution function of the b-quark for inclusive semileptonic B decays in the framework of the parton model. We compare the functional behavior of the fragmentation inspired function and the Gaussian ACCMM function, and discuss their validity. The Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interference patterns in ring-shaped conductors are usually dominated by random features. The amplitude of the oscillations is random from sample to sample and from point to point on the magnetic field axis owing to random scattering of the electron trajectories by impurities within the wires. We report experiments on new devices made with wet etching and global gates, which have shown major progress towards removing the random features. In loops that exhibit ballistic conductance plateaux and cyclotron orbit trapping at $4.2K$, the random pattern of AB oscillations (observed for $T < 0.1K$) can be replaced by much more ordered one -- especially if only a few transverse modes are populated in the ring. The amplitude and shape of the oscillation envelope function change systematically as subbands are populated in the wires forming the loops. Mechanisms governing the AB effect in the ballistic regime are discussed. Correlation has been found between the $G(V_{g},B=0)$ staircase and the ``beating period" of the envelope functions. Quantum oscillations in $G(V_{g},B = 0)$ are consistent with direct interference of paths of unequal length.
