Abstract

The IceCube Upgrade consists of seven new strings to be deployed in the central region of the existing IceCube detector. The goals of the IceCube Upgrade are two-fold: to enhance sensitivity to neutrinos in the GeV range, and to improve the calibration of the IceCube detector as a means of reducing systematic uncertainties due to the optical properties of the ice. Among other calibration devices designed to study ice properties, a novel camera system will be deployed as part of the Upgrade. The system will include three cameras, each paired with an illumination LED, included in each of the Upgrade optical modules. In total, 2,300 cameras will be deployed. A combination of photographic images from transmitted and reflected light will measure optical properties of both the bulk ice in-between strings and the local ice refrozen in the drill hole. In this contribution, we present the operations plans for these two types of measurements and the sensitivities to the ice properties and geometry of the new modules that can be achieved with the new camera system., Comment: Presented at the 38th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC2023). 2. A new simulation framework for IceCube Upgrade calibration using IceCube Upgrade Camera system

Abstract

Currently, an upgrade consisting of seven densely instrumented strings in the center of the volume of the IceCube detector with new digital optical modules (DOMs) is being built. On each string, DOMs will be regularly spaced with a vertical separation of 3 m between depths of 2160 m and 2430 m below the surface of the ice, which is a denser configuration than the existing DOMs of IceCube detector. For a precise calibration of the IceCube Upgrade it is important to understand the properties of the ice, both inside and surrounding the deployment holes. The camera system together with the LED illumination system was developed and produced at Sungkyunkwan university and are installed in almost every DOM to measure these properties. For these calibration measurements, a new simulation framework, which produces expected images from various geometric and optical variables has been developed. Images produced from the simulation will be used to develop an analysis framework for the IceCube Upgrade camera calibration system and for the design of the IceCube Gen2 camera system., Comment: Presented at the 38th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC2023). Abstract

An upgrade to the IceCube Neutrino Telescope is currently under construction. For this IceCube Upgrade, seven new strings will be deployed in the central region of the 86 string IceCube detector to enhance the capability to detect neutrinos in the GeV range. One of the main science objectives of the IceCube Upgrade is an improved calibration of the IceCube detector to reduce systematic uncertainties related to the optical properties of the ice. We have developed a novel optical camera and illumination system that will be part of 700 newly developed optical modules to be deployed with the IceCube Upgrade. A combination of transmission and reflection photographic measurements will be used to measure the optical properties of bulk ice between strings and refrozen ice in the drill hole, to determine module positions, and to survey the local ice environments surrounding the sensor module. 7. Preoperative bullae and subsequent pneumothorax in 6605 patients who underwent robotic prostatectomy

Abstract

Purpose Robotic prostatectomy is the most common surgical approach for treating prostate cancer. Patients undergoing robotic prostatectomy may have bullae, which may rupture leading to pneumothorax. We evaluated the incidence of pneumothorax due to preoperative bullae rupture in robotic prostatectomy. Methods A large retrospective study of patients who underwent robotic prostatectomy between 2009 and 2021 was conducted. Bullae were detected using chest computed tomography. Pneumothorax was detected using a chest X-ray. The primary outcome was the incidence of pneumothorax due to bullae rupture. Secondary outcomes were the prevalence of preoperative bullae and the evaluation of postoperative outcomes, including length of hospital stay, intensive care unit admission rate, and prolonged intensive care unit stay (> 2 days). Results A total of 6605 patients were included. The prevalence of preoperative bullae was 3.0% (196/6,605). There was no incidence of pneumothorax due to bullae rupture. No significant difference in the incidences of pneumothorax between patients with and without bullae (0/196 vs. 2/6,409, P > 0.999) was observed. In addition, length of hospital stay, intensive care unit admission rate, and prolonged intensive care unit stay were not significantly different between the two groups. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that there was no significant difference in lengths of hospital stay between the two groups (log-rank test, P > 0.999). Conclusion In our cohort, there was no incidence of pneumothorax following robotic prostatectomy in patients with preoperative bullae. Abstract

Purpose: To represent 24–2 visual field (VF) losses of individual patients using a hybrid approach of archetypal analysis (AA) and fuzzy c-means (FCM) clustering. Methods: In this multicenter retrospective study, we classified characteristic patterns of 24–2 VF using AA and decomposed them with FCM clustering. We predicted the change in mean deviation (MD) through supervised machine learning from decomposition coefficient change. In addition, we compared the areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUCs) of the decomposition coefficient slopes to detect VF progression using three criteria: MD slope, Visual Field Index slope, and pointwise linear regression analysis. Results: We identified 16 characteristic patterns (archetypes or ATs) of 24–2 VF from 132,938 VFs of 18,033 participants using AA. The hybrid approach using FCM revealed a lower mean squared error and greater correlation coefficient than the AA single approach for predicting MD change (all P ≤ 0.001). Three of 16 AUCs of the FCM decomposition coefficient slopes outperformed the AA decomposition coefficient slopes in detecting VF progression for all three criteria (AT5, superior altitudinal defect; AT10, double arcuate defect; AT13, total loss) (all P ≤ 0.028). Conclusion: A hybrid approach combining AA and FCM to analyze 24–2 VF can visualize VF tests in characteristic patterns and enhance detection of VF progression with lossless decomposition. 14. The lymphocyte/monocyte ratio and red blood cell transfusion during radical retropubic prostatectomy

Abstract

Purpose Despite improvements of strategy in radical retropubic prostatectomy, blood loss is still a major concern. The lymphocyte/monocyte (LM) ratio is a prognostic indicator for various diseases. We identified the risk factors, including the LM ratio, for red blood cell (RBC) transfusion during radical retropubic prostatectomy. Methods This retrospective study assessed patients who underwent radical retropubic prostatectomy between March 2009 and December 2020. To determine the risk factors for RBC transfusion, a multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was also performed. Postoperative outcomes, including acute kidney injury (AKI), hospitalization duration, and intensive care unit (ICU) admission, were also evaluated. Results Among 1302 patients, 158 patients (12.1%) received an intraoperative RBC transfusion. Multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated that the risk factors for RBC transfusion were the LM ratio, hemoglobin, 6% hydroxyethyl starch amount, and positive surgical margin. The area under the ROC curve of LM ratio was 0.706 (cut-off = 4.3). The LM ratio at [less than or equal to] 4.3 was significantly related to transfusion in multivariate-adjusted analysis (odds ratio = 4.598, P < 0.001). AKI and ICU admission were significantly higher, and the hospitalization duration was significantly longer in patients with RBC transfusion. Conclusions The LM ratio was a risk factor for RBC transfusion in radical retropubic prostatectomy. The optimal cut-off value of the LM ratio to predict transfusion was 4.3. RBC transfusion was associated with poor postoperative outcomes. Abstract

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory instruments about 1 km3 of deep, glacial ice at the geographic South Pole. It uses 5160 photomultipliers to detect Cherenkov light emitted by charged relativistic particles. An unexpected light propagation effect observed by the experiment is an anisotropic attenuation, which is aligned with the local flow direction of the ice. We examine birefringent light propagation through the polycrystalline ice microstructure as a possible explanation for this effect. The predictions of a first-principles model developed for this purpose, in particular curved light trajectories resulting from asymmetric diffusion, provide a qualitatively good match to the main features of the data. This in turn allows us to deduce ice crystal properties. Since the wavelength of the detected light is short compared to the crystal size, these crystal properties include not only the crystal orientation fabric, but also the average crystal size and shape, as a function of depth. By adding small empirical corrections to this first-principles model, a quantitatively accurate description of the optical properties of the IceCube glacial ice is obtained. Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to predict future visual field tests using a bidirectional gated recurrent unit (Bi-GRU) and assess its performance based on the number of input visual field tests and the prediction time interval. Materials and methods: This study included patients who underwent visual field tests at least four times at five university hospitals between June 2004 and April 2022. All data were accessed in October 2022 for research purposes. In total, 23,517 eyes with 185,858 visual field tests were used as the training dataset, and 1,053 eyes with 9,459 visual field tests were used as the test dataset. The Bi-GRU architecture was designed to take a variable number of visual field tests, ranging from 3 to 80, as input and predict visual field tests at the desired arbitrary time point. It generated the mean deviation (MD), pattern standard deviation (PSD), Visual Field Index (VFI), and total deviation value (TDV) for 54 test points. To analyze the model performance, the mean absolute error between the actual and predicted values was calculated and analyzed for glaucoma severity, number of input visual field tests, and prediction time interval. Results: The prediction errors of the Bi-GRU model for MD, PSD, VFI, and TDV ranged from 1.20 to 1.68 dB, 0.95 to 1.16 dB, 3.64 to 4.51%, and 2.13 to 2.60 dB, respectively, depending on the number of input visual field tests. Prediction errors tended to increase as the prediction time interval increased; however, the difference was not statistically significant. As the severity of glaucoma worsened, the prediction errors significantly increased. Abstract

The paper studies one-shot two-player games with non-Bayesian uncertainty. The players have an attitude that ranges from optimism to pessimism in the face of uncertainty. Given the attitudes, each player forms a belief about the set of possible strategies of the other player. If these beliefs are consistent, one says that they form an uncertainty equilibrium. One then considers a two-phase game where the players first choose their attitude and then play the resulting game. 29. Design and Analysis of an Asynchronous Zero Collision MAC Protocol

Abstract

This paper proposes and analyzes a distributed MAC protocol that achieves zero collision with no control message exchange nor synchronization. ZC (ZeroCollision) is neither reservation-based nor dynamic TDMA; the protocol supports variable-length packets and does not lose efficiency when some of the stations do not transmit. At the same time, ZC is not a CSMA; in its steady state, it is completely collision-free. The stations transmit repeatedly in a round-robin order once the convergence state is reached. If some stations skip their turn, their transmissions are replaced by idle $20 \mu$-second mini-slots that enable the other stations to keep track of their order. Because of its short medium access delay and its efficiency, the protocol supports both real-time and elastic applications. The protocol allows for nodes leaving and joining the network; it can allocate more throughput to specific nodes (such as an access point). The protocol is robust against carrier sensing errors or clock drift. While collision avoidance is guaranteed in a single collision domain, it is not the case in a multiple collision one. However, experiments show ZC supports a comparable amount of goodput to CSMA in a multiple collision domain environment. The paper presents an analysis and extensive simulations of the protocol, confirming that ZC outperforms both CSMA and TDMA at high and low load.

Abstract

Patau syndrome (trisomy 13) is a severe disorder associated with multiple systemic defects. Patau syndrome is commonly associated with ocular abnormalities but rarely associated with congenital glaucoma. To obtain a better surgical view, palatoplasty requires neck extension during surgery. The intraocular pressure (IOP) of patients with Patau syndrome can increase owing to the neck extension position while undergoing palatoplasty, particularly in those with congenital glaucoma. Here, we describe a case with increased IOP measured using a rebound tonometer during palatoplasty in a pediatric patient with Patau syndrome and congenital glaucoma. This case shows that it may be important to reduce the degree of neck extension and shorten the operation time to minimize any increase in the IOP during palatoplasty in pediatric patients with Patau syndrome accompanied by congenital glaucoma.
