1. The Effects of Export Diversification on Macroeconomic Stabilization: Evidence from Korea

Abstract

This paper studies whether export diversification mitigated the negative effect of the global financial crisis on exports using the Korean case. Specifically, we use annual data on the exports of 24 Korean manufacturing industries from 2000 to 2016 and examine whether the negative effect of the crisis on exports was less prevalent in industries that were more diversified in terms of country and product. We also examine whether export competitiveness, as measured by the revealed comparative advantage index by industry, had a mitigating effect on trade during the crisis. In order to study these issues, we use panel regression with a fixed-effect model for 24 Korean manufacturing industries. From our empirical analysis, we find that country diversification weakened the negative impact of the global financial crisis on Korea’s exports, whereas neither product diversification nor export competitiveness did so.

Abstract

This paper measures the extent of comovements in stock returns between Korea and three major countries (China, Japan and the U.S.) using industry-level data for Korea from 2003 to 2016 in the spirit of the international capital asset pricing model. It also examines what drives the comovements between Korea and the three countries. We find that the comovements of Korean stock returns with those of the U.S. and Japan became smaller after the global financial crisis. In contrast, the comovement in stock returns between Korea and China became larger after the crisis. After an additional analysis, we conclude that trade linkage is the main driver of the comovements between Korea and the three countries.

Abstract

Sorting has been one of the most challenging studied problems in different scientific researches. Although many techniques and algorithms have been proposed on the theory of having efficient parallel sorting implementation, however achieving desired performance on different types of the architectures with large number of processors is still a challenging issue. Maximizing parallelism level in applications can be achieved by minimizing overheads due to load imbalance and waiting time due to memory latencies. In this paper, we present a distributed sorting algorithm implemented in PGX.D, a fast distributed graph processing system, which outperforms the Spark's distributed sorting implementation by around 2x-3x by hiding communication latencies and minimizing unnecessary overheads. Furthermore, it shows that the proposed PGX.D sorting method handles dataset containing many duplicated data entries efficiently and always results in keeping balanced workloads for different input data distribution types., Comment: 8 pages, 12 figures

31. Parallelizing query optimization

Abstract

Many commercial RDBMSs employ cost-based query optimization exploiting dynamic programming (DP) to efficiently generate the optimal query execution plan. However, optimization time increases rapidly for queries joining more than 10 tables. Randomized or heuristic search algorithms reduce query optimization time for large join queries by considering fewer plans, sacrificing plan optimality. Though commercial systems executing query plans in parallel have existed for over a decade, the optimization of such plans still occurs serially. While modern microprocessors employ multiple cores to accelerate computations, parallelizing query optimization to exploit multi-core parallelism is not as straightforward as it may seem. The DP used in join enumeration belongs to the challenging nonserial polyadicDP class because of its non-uniform data dependencies. In this paper, we propose a comprehensive and practical solution for parallelizing query optimization in the multi-core processor architecture, including a parallel join enumeration algorithm and several alternative ways to allocate work to threads to balance their load. We also introduce a novel data structure called skip vector arrayto significantly reduce the generation of join partitions that are infeasible. This solution has been prototyped in PostgreSQL. Extensive experiments using various query graph topologies confirm that our algorithms allocate the work evenly, thereby achieving almost linear speed-up. Our parallel join enumeration algorithm enhanced with our skip vector array outperforms the conventional generate-and-filter DP algorithm by up to two orders of magnitude for star queries-linear speedup due to parallelism and an order of magnitude performance improvement due to the skip vector array.
