A new kind of spin-1 chain Hamiltonian consisting of competing dimer and trimer projection operators is proposed. As the relative strengths and signs of the interactions are varied, the model exhibits a number of different phases including the gapped dimer phase and the gapless trimer phase with critical correlations described by a conformal field theory with central charge $c=2$. A symmetry-protected topological phase also exists in this model, even though the microscopic interactions are not the simple adiabatic extensions of the well-known Heisenberg and the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki model and contains both two- and three-particle permutations. A fourth phase is characterized by macroscopically degenerate ground states. While bearing almost a one-to-one resemblance to the phase diagram of the bilinear-biquadratic spin-1 chain Hamiltonian, our model is rooted on very different physical origin, namely the two competing tendencies of spin-1 particles to form singlets through either dimer or trimer formation., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figure, appendix

The trimer resonating valence bond (tRVB) state consisting of an equal-weight superposition of trimer coverings on a square lattice is proposed. A model Hamiltonian of the Rokhsar-Kivelson type for which the tRVB becomes the exact ground state is written. The state is shown to have $9^g$ topological degeneracy on genus g surface and support $Z_3$ vortex excitations. Correlation functions show exponential behavior with a very short correlation length consistent with the gapped spectrum. The classical problem of the degeneracy of trimer configurations is investigated by the transfer matrix method.

Classification of possible quantum spin liquid (QSL) states of interacting spin-1/2's in two dimensions has been a fascinating topic of condensed matter for decades, resulting in enormous progress in our understanding of low-dimensional quantum matter. By contrast, relatively little work exists on the identification, let alone classification, of QSL phases for spin-1 systems in dimensions higher than one. Employing the powerful ideas of tensor network theory and its classification, we develop general methods for writing QSL wave functions of spin-1 respecting all the lattice symmetries, spin rotation, and time reversal with trivial gauge structure on the square lattice. We find $2^5$ distinct classes characterized by five binary quantum numbers. Several explicit constructions of such wave functions are given for bond dimensions $D$ ranging from two to four, along with thorough numerical analyses to identify their physical characters. Both gapless and gapped states are found. The topological entanglement entropy of the gapped states are close to zero, indicative of topologically trivial states. In $D=4$, several different tensors can be linearly combined to produce a family of states within the same symmetry class. A rich "phase diagram" can be worked out among the phases of these tensors, as well as the phase transitions among them. Among the states we identified in this putative phase diagram is the plaquette-ordered phase, gapped resonating valence bond phase, and a critical phase. A continuous transition separates the plaquette-ordered phase from the resonating valence bond phase.

Experimental and theoretical aspects of Hall-type transport of spins in magnetic insulators are reviewed, with emphasis on their spin chirality origin. A general formalism for linear response theory of thermal Hall transport in the spin model is developed, which can be applied to both the magnon and the paramagnetic, spin-liquid regimes. Recent experiments on magnon-mediated thermal Hall transport in the two-dimensional kagome, and three-dimensional pyrochlore ferromagnetic insulators are reviewed in light of the multi-band magnon theory of Hall transport, and compared to the more mysterious thermal Hall transport found in the putative quantum spin ice material. As realizations of spin-chirality driven magnon transport in the real space, we review the general theory of emergent gauge fields governing the magnon dynamics in the textured magnet, and discuss its application to the magnon-Skyrmion scattering problem. We show how to construct fully symmetric, gapped states without topological order on a honey- comb lattice for S = 1/2 spins using the language of projected entangled pair states(PEPS). An explicit example is given for the virtual bond dimension D = 4. Four distinct classes differing by lattice quantum numbers are found by applying the systematic classification scheme introduced by two of the authors [S. Jiang and Y. Ran, Phys. Rev. B 92, 104414 (2015)]. Lack of topological degeneracy or other conventional forms of symmetry breaking, and the existence of energy gap in the proposed wave functions, are checked by numerical calculations of the entanglement entropy and various correlation functions. Our work provides the first explicit realization of a featureless quantum insulator for spin-1/2 particles on a honeycomb lattice., Comment: Significantly revised version with new author list. We construct Holstein-Primakoff Hamiltonian for magnons in arbitrary slowly varying spin background, for a microscopic spin Hamiltonian consisting of ferromagnetic spin exchange,Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange, and the Zeeman term. The Gross-Pitaevskii-type equation for magnon dynamics contains several background gauge fields pertaining to local spin chirality, inhomogeneous potential, and anomalous scattering that violates the boson number conservation. Non-trivial corrections to previous formulas derived in the literature are given. Subsequent mapping to hydrodynamic fields yields the continuity equation and the Euler equation of the magnon fluid dynamics. Magnon wave scattering off a localized Skyrmion is examined numerically based on our Gross-Pitaevskii formulation. Dependence of the effective flux experienced by the impinging magnon on the Skyrmion radius is pointed out, and compared with analysis of the same problem using the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures

Theory of Hall transport of spins in a correlated paramagnetic phase is developed. By identifying the thermal Hall current operator in the spin language, which turns out to equal the spin chirality in the pure Heisenberg model, various response functions can be derived straightforwardly. Subsequent reduction to the Schwinger boson representation of spins allows a convenient calculation of thermal and spin Hall coefficients in the paramagnetic regime using self-consistent mean-field theory. Com- parison is made to results from the Holstein-Primakoff reduction of spin operators appropriate for ordered phases.

We study the density of states and the optical conductivity of a Kondo lattice which is immersed in a massless Dirac Fermi sea, as characterized by a linear dispersion relation. As a result of the hybridization $V$ with the $f$-electron levels, the pseudo-gap in the conduction band becomes duplicated and is shifted both into the upper and the lower quasiparticle band. We find that due to the linear dispersion of the Dirac fermions, the Kondo insulator gap is observable in the optical conductivity in contrast to the Kondo lattice system in a conventional conduction band, and the resulting gap\,[$\Delta_{\rm gap}(T)$] depends on temperature. The reason is that the Kondo insulator gap is an {\it indirect gap} in conventional Kondo lattices, while it becomes a {\it direct gap} in the Dirac Fermi Sea. We find that the optical conductivity attains two peaks and is vanishing exactly at $2 b(T)V$ where $b$ depends on temperature.

The quantum phase diagram of disordered electron systems as function of the concentration of magnetic impurities nm and the local exchange coupling J is studied in the dilute limit. We take into account the Anderson localisation of the electrons by a nonperturbative numerical treatment of the disorder potential. The competition between RKKY interaction JRKKY and the Kondo effect, as governed by the temperature scale TK, is known to gives rise to a rich magnetic quantum phase diagram, the Doniach diagram. Our numerical calculations show that in a disordered system both the Kondo temperature TK and JRKKY are widely distributed. Accordingly, also their ratio, JRKKY /TK is widely distributed as shown in Fig. 1 (a). However, we find a sharp cutoff of that distribution, which allows us to define a critical density of magnetic impurities nc below which Kondo screening wins at all sites of the system above a critical coupling Jc, forming the Kondo phase[see Fig. 1 (b)]. As disorder is increased, Jc increases and a spin coupled phase is found to grow at the expense of the Kondo phase. From these distribution functions we derive the magnetic susceptibility which show anomalous power law behavior. In the Kondo phase that power is determined by the wide distribution of the Kondo temperature, while in the spin coupled phase it is governed by the distribution of JRKKY. At low densities and small J < Jc we identify a paramagnetic phase. We also report results on a honeycomb lattice, graphene, where we find that the spin coupled phase is more stable against Kondo screening, but is more easily destroyed by disorder into a PM phase.

We report the dependence of Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida\,(RKKY) interaction on nonmagmetic disorder and gate voltage in grapheme. First the semiclassical method is employed to reserve the expression for RKKY interaction in clean graphene. Due to the pseudogap at Dirac point, the RKKY coupling in undoped grapheme is found to be proportional to $1/R^3$. Next, we investigate how the RKKY interaction depends on nonmagnetic disorder strength and gate voltage by studying numerically the Anderson tight-binding model on a honeycomb lattice. We observe that the RKKY interaction along the armchair direction is more robust to nonmagnetic disorder than in other directions. This effect can be explained semiclassically: The presence of multiple shortest paths between two lattice sites in the armchair directions is found to be responsible for the reduceddisorder sensitivity. We also present the distribution of the RKKY interaction for the zigzag and armchair directions. We identify three different shapes of the distributions which are repeated periodically along the zigzag direction, while only one kind, and more narrow distribution, is observed along the armchair direction. Moreover, we find that the distribution of amplitudes of the RKKY interaction crosses over from a non-Gaussian shape with very long tails to a completely log-normal distribution when increasing the nonmagnetic disorder strength. The width of the log-normal distribution is found to linearly increase with the strength of disorder, in agreement with analytical predictions. At finite gate voltage near the Dirac point, Friedel oscillation appears in addition to the oscillation from the interference between two Dirac points. This results in a beating pattern. We study how these beating patterns are effected by the nonmagnetic disorder in doped graphene.

We investigate the effects of nonmagnetic disorder on the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida (RKKY) interaction in graphene by studying numerically the Anderson model with on-site and hopping disorder on a honeycomb lattice at half filling. We evaluate the strength of the interaction as a function of the distance R between two magnetic ions, as well as their lattice positions and orientations. In the clean limit, we find that the strength of the interaction decays as 1/R^3, with its sign and oscillation amplitude showing strong anisotropy. With increasing on-site disorder, the mean amplitude decreases exponentially at distances exceeding the elastic mean free path. At smaller distances, however, the oscillation amplitude increases strongly and its sign changes on the same sublattice for all directions but the armchair direction. For random hopping disorder, no sign change is observed. No significant changes to the geometrical average values of the RKKY interaction are found at small distances, while exponential suppression is observed at distances exceeding the localization length., Comment: 4+\epsilon\ pages, 5 figures
