Young planetary nebulae (PNe) are characterized by their hot central stars and the presence of abundant neutral and molecular components, which result from significant mass loss during the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) phase of stellar evolution. Far-UV \ion{He}{2}$\lambda$1025 line photons produced near the central star can undergo Raman scattering by hydrogen atoms, creating a broad emission feature centered at $\sim$ 6545~\AA. We conducted high-resolution spectroscopy of 12 young PNe from April 2019 to March 2020 using the Bohyunsan Observatory Echelle Spectrograph ({\it BOES}). Building on the study by Choi and Lee, who identified Raman-scattered \ion{He}{2} at 6545~\AA\ in NGC~6881 and NGC~6886, we report new detections of this feature in NGC~6741 and NGC~6884. Profile fitting reveals that the velocity of the \ion{H}{1} component relative to the \ion{He}{2} emission region ranges from $26-33~{\rm km~s^{-1}}$ in these PNe. Using photoionization modeling, we estimate the line flux of \ion{He}{2}$\lambda$1025 and derive Raman conversion efficiencies of 0.39, 0.21, 0.24, and 0.07 for NGC~6881, NGC~6741, NGC~6886, and NGC~6884, respectively. These results, combined with radiative transfer modeling, suggest the presence of \ion{H}{1} components with masses around $10^{-2}~M_\odot$, moving outward from the central \ion{He}{2} emission region at speeds characteristic of the slow stellar wind from a mass-losing giant star., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The young planetary nebula NGC 6302 is known to exhibit Raman-scattered He II features at 6545 and 4851 Angstrom. These features are formed through inelastic scattering of He II$\lambda\lambda$ 1025 and 972 with hydrogen atoms in the ground state, for which the cross sections are $1.2 \times 10^{-21}$ and $1.4\times 10^{-22} {\rm\ cm^2}$, respectively. We investigate the spectrum of NGC 6302 archived in the ESO Science Portal. Our Gaussian line fitting analysis shows that the Raman-scattered He II features are broader and more redshifted than the hypothetical model Raman features that would be formed in a cold static H I medium. We adopt a simple scattering geometry consisting of a compact He II emission region surrounded by a H I medium to perform Monte Carlo simulations using the radiative transfer code ${\it STaRS}$. Our simulations show that the H I region is characterized by the H I column density $N_{\rm HI}=3\times 10^{21}{\rm\ cm^{-2}}$ with the random speed component $v_{\rm ran}=10{\rm\ km\ s^{-1}}$ expanding with a speed $v_{\rm exp}= 13{\rm\ km\ s^{-1}}$ from the He II emission region. Based on our best fit parameters, we estimate the H I mass of the neutral medium $M_{\rm HI} \simeq 1.0\times 10^{-2}\ {\rm M_\odot}$, pointing out the usefulness of Raman He II spectroscopy as a tool to trace H I components., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

To understand the mechanism behind high-$z$ Ly${\alpha}$ nebulae, we simulate the scattering of Ly${\alpha}$ in a $\rm H\,I$ halo about a central Ly${\alpha}$ source. For the first time, we consider both smooth and clumpy distributions of halo gas, as well as a range of outflow speeds, total $\rm H\,I$ column densities, $\rm H\,I$ spatial concentrations, and central source galaxies (e.g., with Ly${\alpha}$ line widths corresponding to those typical of AGN or star-forming galaxies). We compute the spatial-frequency diffusion and the polarization of the Ly${\alpha}$ photons scattered by atomic hydrogen. Our scattering-only model reproduces the typical size of Ly${\alpha}$ nebulae ($\sim 100\,$kpc) at total column densities $N_{\rm HI} \geq 10^{20} \rm cm^{-2}$ and predicts a range of positive, flat, and negative polarization radial gradients. We also find two general classes of Ly${\alpha}$ nebula morphologies: with and without bright cores. Cores are seen when $N_{\rm HI}$ is low, i.e., when the central source is directly visible, and are associated with a polarization jump, a steep increase in the polarization radial profile just outside the halo center. Of all the parameters tested in our smooth or clumpy medium model, $N_{\rm HI}$ dominates the trends. The radial behaviors of the Ly${\alpha}$ surface brightness, spectral line shape, and polarization in the clumpy model with covering factor $f_c \gtrsim 5$ approach those of the smooth model at the same $N_{\rm HI}$. A clumpy medium with high $N_{\rm HI}$ and low $f_c \lesssim 2$ generates Ly${\alpha}$ features via scattering that the smooth model cannot: a bright core, symmetric line profile, and polarization jump., Comment: 42 pages, 27 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ, Comments welcome!

The accretion process in a typical S-type symbiotic star, targeting~AG Draconis, is investigated through 3D hydrodynamical simulations using the FLASH code. Regardless of the wind velocity of the giant star, an accretion disk surrounding the white dwarf is always formed. In the wind models faster than the orbital velocity of the white dwarf, the disk size and accretion rate are consistent with the predictions under the Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton (BHL) condition. In slower wind models, unlike the BHL predictions, the disk size does not grow and the accretion rate increases to a considerably higher level, up to $>20\%$ of the mass-loss rate of the giant star. The accretion disk in our fiducial model is characterized by a flared disk with a radius of 0.16~au and a scale height of 0.03 au. The disk mass of $\sim 5 \times 10^{-8} M_\odot$ is asymmetrically distributed with the density peak toward the giant star, being about $50\%$ higher than the density minimum in the disk. Two inflowing spiral features are clearly identified and their relevance to the azimuthal asymmetry of disk is pointed out. The flow in the accretion disk is found to be sub-Keplerian with about $90\%$ of the Keplerian speed, which indicates the caveat of overestimating the O VI emission region from spectroscopy of Raman-scattered O VI features at 6825 {\AA} and 7082 {\AA}., Comment: 26 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

RR Tel is an interacting binary system in which a hot white dwarf (WD) accretes matter from a Mira-type variable star via gravitational capture of its stellar wind. This symbiotic nova shows intense Raman-scattered O VI 1032\r{A} and 1038\r{A} features at 6825\r{A} and 7082\r{A}. We present high-resolution optical spectra of RR Tel taken in 2016 and 2017 with the Magellan Inamori Kyocera Echelle (MIKE) spectrograph at Magellan-Clay telescope, Chile. We aim to study the stellar wind accretion in RR Tel from the profile analysis of Raman O VI features. With an asymmetric O VI disk model, we derive a representative Keplerian speed of $> 35{\rm km~s^{-1}}$, and the corresponding scale < 0.8 au. The best-fit for the Raman profiles is obtained with a mass loss rate of the Mira ${\dot M}\sim2\times10^{-6}~{\rm M_{\odot}~yr^{-1}}$ and a wind terminal velocity $v_{\infty}\sim 20~{\rm km~s^{-1}}$. We compare the MIKE data with an archival spectrum taken in 2003 with the Fibre-fed Extended Range Optical Spectrograph (FEROS) at the MPG/ESO 2.2m telescope. It allows us to highlight the profile variation of the Raman O VI features, indicative of a change in the density distribution of the O VI disk in the last two decades. We also report the detection of O VI recombination lines at 3811\r{A} and 3834\r{A}, which are blended with other emission lines. Emission features formed through Raman scattering with atomic hydrogen provide unique and crucial information to probe the distribution and kinematics of a thick neutral region illuminated by a strong far UV emission source. We introduce a new 3 dimensional Monte-Carlo code in order to describe the radiative transfer of line photons that are subject to Raman and Rayleigh scattering with atomic hydrogen. In this code entitled "${\bf S}$ejong Radiative ${\bf T}$r${\bf a}$nsfer through ${\bf R}$aman and Rayleigh ${\bf S}$cattering (${\it STaRS}$), each photon is traced until escape with a tag attached carrying information including the position, direction, wavelength, and polarization. The thick neutral scattering region is divided into numerous cells with each cell being characterized by its velocity and density, which ensures huge flexibility of the code in analyzing Raman-scattered features formed in a neutral region with complicated kinematics and density distribution. As a test of the code, we revisit the formation of Balmer wings through Raman scattering of far UV continuum near Ly$\beta$ and Ly$\gamma$ in a static neutral region. An additional check is made to investigate Raman scattering of O VI in an expanding neutral medium. We find fairly good agreement of our results with previous works, demonstrating the capability of dealing with radiative transfer modeling that can be applied to spectropolarimetric imaging observations of various objects including symbiotic stars, young planetary nebulae, and active galactic nuclei., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in JKAS

Young planetary nebulae (PNe) retain a large amount of neutral material that was shed in the previous asymptotic giant branch stage. The thick H I region in young PNe can be effectively probed by illuminating far UV radiation that may be inelastically scattered to appear in the optical region. Raman-scattered features are unique spectroscopic tracers of neutral regions that can be used to investigate the mass-loss process in young PNe. We conduct high resolution spectroscopy of young PNe using BOES (the Bohyunsan Observatory Echelle Spectrograph) and report the discovery of a Raman-scattered He II feature at 6545 {\AA} in NGC 6886 and NGC 6881. The Raman-scattered He II features have been found in only five PNe so far, and, in particular, it is the first direct detection of an H I component in NGC 6881. The Raman He II $\lambda 6545$ features in the two PNe are observed to be redshifted with respect to He II $\lambda6560$, indicating that the neutral regions are expanding. We perform line profile analyses using the grid-based Monte Carlo code 'STaRS' by assuming a neutral hydrogen region in the shape of a partial spherical shell expanding radially. The profiles are well fitted with the model parameters of covering factor $CF=0.3$, H I column density $N_{\rm HI} = 5 \times 10^{20}~{\rm cm^{-2}}$, and expansion speed $v_{\rm exp} = 25~\rm\ km~s^{-1}$ for NGC 6886 and $CF=0.6$, $N_{\rm HI} = 3 \times 10^{20}~{\rm cm^{-2}}$, and $v_{\rm exp} = 30\rm\ km~s^{-1}$ for NGC 6881, respectively., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in ApJL

We investigate line formation of Raman-scattered He II at 4851 in an expanding neutral spherical shell that surrounds a point-like He II source located at the center. A new grid-based Monte Carlo code is used to take into consideration the H I density variation along each photon path. In the case of a monochromatic He II emission source, the resultant line profiles are characterized by an asymmetric double peak structure with a tertiary peak and a significant red tail that may extend to line centers of He II$\lambda$4859 and H$\beta$. The peak separation corresponds to the expansion velocity, which we consider is in the range $20-40{\rm\ km\ s^{-1}}$ in this work. Tertiary red peaks are formed as a result of multiple Rayleigh reflections at the inner surface of a hollow spherical shell of \ion{H}{1}. Due to a sharp increase of scattering cross section near resonance, the overall Raman conversion efficiency is significantly enhanced as the expansion speed increases. In the case of a He II line source with a Gaussian line profile with a full width at half maximum of $30 - 70{\rm\ km\ s^{-1}}$, we obtain distorted redward profiles due to increasing redward cross section of H I. A simple application to the young planetary nebula IC 5117 is consistent with a neutral shell expanding with a speed $\sim 30{\rm\ km\ s^{-1}}$., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We present high resolution spectroscopy of the yellow symbiotic star AG Draconis with ESPaDOnS at the {\it Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope}. Our analysis is focused on the profiles of Raman scattered \ion{O}{VI} features centered at 6825 \AA\ and 7082 \AA, which are formed through Raman scattering of \ion{O}{VI}$\lambda\lambda$1032 and 1038 with atomic hydrogen. These features are found to exhibit double component profiles with conspicuously enhanced red parts. Assuming that the \ion{O}{vi} emission region constitutes a part of the accretion flow around the white dwarf, Monte Carlo simulations for \ion{O}{VI} line radiative transfer are performed to find that the overall profiles are well fit with the accretion flow azimuthally asymmetric with more matter on the entering side than on the opposite side. As the mass loss rate of the giant component is increased, we find that the flux ratio $F(6825)/F(7082)$ of Raman 6825 and 7082 features decreases and that our observational data are consistent with a mass loss rate $\dot M\sim 2 \times 10^{-7} {\rm\ M_{\odot}\ yr^{-1}}$. We also find that additional bipolar components moving away with a speed $\sim 70{\rm\ km\ s^{-1}}$ provide considerably improved fit to the red wing parts of Raman features. With the advent of virtualization technology, cloud computing realizes on-demand computing. The capability of dynamic resource provisioning is a fundamental driving factor for users to adopt the cloud technology. The aspect is important for cloud service providers to optimize the expense for running the infrastructure as well. Despite many technological advances in related areas, however, it is still the case that the infrastructure providers must decide hardware configuration before deploying a cloud infrastructure, especially from the storage's perspective. This static nature of the storage provisioning practice can cause many problems in meeting tenant requirements, which often come later into the picture. In this paper, we propose a system called IOArbiter that enables the dynamic creation of underlying storage implementation in the cloud. IOArbiter defers storage provisioning to the time at which a tenant actually requests a storage space. As a result, an underlying storage implementation, e.g., RAID-5, 6 or Ceph storage pool with 6+3 erasure coding, will be materialized at the volume creation time. Using our prototype implementation with Openstack Cinder, we show that IOArbiter can simultaneously satisfy a number of different tenant demands, which may not be possible with a static configuration strategy. Additionally QoS mechanisms such as admission control and dynamic throttling help the system mitigate a noisy neighbor problem significantly., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

Symbiotic stars often exhibit broad wings around Balmer emission lines, whose origin is still controversial. We present the high resolution spectra of the S type symbiotic stars Z Andromedae and AG Draconis obtained with the ESPaDOnS and the 3.6 m Canada France Hawaii Telescope to investigate the broad wings around H$\alpha$ and H$\beta$. When H$\alpha$ and H$\beta$ lines are overplotted in the Doppler space, it is noted that H$\alpha$ profiles are overall broader than H$\beta$ in these two objects. Adopting a Monte Carlo approach, we consider the formation of broad wings of H$\alpha$ and H$\beta$ through Raman scattering of far UV radiation around Ly$\beta$ and Ly$\gamma$ and Thomson scattering by free electrons. Raman scattering wings are simulated by choosing an H I region with a neutral hydrogen column density $N_{HI}$ and a covering factor $CF$. For Thomson wings, the ionized scattering region is assumed to cover fully the Balmer emission nebula and is characterized by the electron temperature $T_e$ and the electron column density $N_e$. Thomson wings of H$\alpha$ and H$\beta$ have the same width that is proportional to $T_e^{1/2}$. However, Raman wings of H$\alpha$ are overall three times wider than H$\beta$ counterparts, which is attributed to different cross section for Ly$\beta$ and Ly$\gamma$. Normalized to have the same peak values and presented in the Doppler factor space. H$\alpha$ wings of Z And and AG Dra are observed to be significantly wider than H$\beta$ counterpart, favoring the Raman scattering origin of broad Balmer wings., Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We investigate the escape of Ly$\beta$ from emission nebulae with a significant population of excited hydrogen atoms in the level $n=2$, rendering them optically thick in H$\alpha$. The transfer of Ly$\beta$ line photons in these optically thick regions is complicated by the presence of another scattering channel leading to re-emission of H$\alpha$, alternating their identities between Ly$\beta$ and H$\alpha$. In this work, we develop a Monte Carlo code to simulate the transfer of Ly$\beta$ line photons incorporating the scattering channel into H$\alpha$. Both H$\alpha$ and Ly$\beta$ lines are formed through diffusion in frequency space, where a line photon enters the wing regime after a fairly large number of resonance scatterings with hydrogen atoms. Various line profiles of H$\alpha$ and Ly$\beta$ emergent from our model nebulae are presented. It is argued that the electron temperature is a critical parameter which controls the flux ratio of emergent Ly$\beta$ and H$\alpha$. Specifically for $T=3 \times 10^4{\rm\ K}$ and H$\alpha$ line center optical depth $\tau_\alpha=10$, the number flux ratio of emergent Ly$\beta$ and H$\alpha$ is $\sim 49$ percent, which is quite significant. We propose that the leaking Ly$\beta$ can be an interesting source for the formation of H$\alpha$ wings observed in many symbiotic stars and active galactic nuclei. The unification scheme of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) invokes an optically thick molecular torus component hiding the broad emission line region. Assuming the presence of a thick neutral component in the molecular torus characterized by a \ion{H}{I} column density > $10^{22}{\rm\ cm^{-2}}$, we propose that far UV radiation around Ly$\alpha$ can be significantly polarized through Rayleigh scattering. Adopting a Monte Carlo technique we compute polarization of Rayleigh scattered radiation near Ly$\alpha$ in a thick neutral region in the shape of a slab and a cylindrical shell. It is found that radiation near Ly$\alpha$ Rayleigh reflected from a very thick slab can be significantly polarized in a fairly large range of wavelength $\Delta\lambda\sim 50$ \AA\ exhibiting a flux profile similar to the incident one. Rayleigh transmitted radiation in a slab is characterized by the central dip with a complicated polarization behavior. The optically thick part near Ly$\alpha$ center is polarized in the direction perpendicular to the slab normal, which is in contrast to weakly polarized wing parts in the direction parallel to the slab normal. A similar polarization flip phenomenon is also found in the case of a tall cylindrical shell, in which the spatial diffusion along the vertical direction near the inner cylinder wall for core photons leads to a tendency of the electric field aligned to the direction perpendicular to the vertical axis. Observational implications are briefly discussed including spectropolarimetry of the quasar PG~1630+377 by Koratkar et al. in 1990 where Ly$\alpha$ is strongly polarized with no other emission lines polarized., Comment: 11 pages, 15 figures

We present a detailed modeling of the two broad bands observed at 6825 \AA\ and 7082 \AA\ in Sanduleak's star, a controversial object in the Large Magellanic Cloud. These bands are known to originate from Raman-scattering of O VI $\lambda\lambda$ 1032 and 1038 photons with atomic hydrogen and are only observed in bona fide symbiotic stars. Our high-resolution spectrum obtained with the Magellan Inamori Kyocera Echelle (MIKE) spectrograph at the Magellan-Clay Telescope reveals, quite surprisingly, that the profiles of the two bands look very different: while the Raman 6825 \AA\ band shows a single broad profile with a redward extended bump, the Raman 7082 \AA\ band exhibits a distinct triple-peak profile. Our model suggests that the O VI emission nebula can be decomposed into a red, blue and central emission regions from an accretion disk, a bipolar outflow and a further compact, optically thick region. We also perform Monte Carlo simulations with the aim of fitting the observed flux ratio $F(6825)/F(7082) \sim 4.5$, which indicate that the neutral region in Sanduleak's star is characterized by the column density $N_{HI} \sim 1 \times 10^{23} {\rm\ cm^{-2}}$., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Symbiotic stars are regarded as wide binary systems consisting of a hot white dwarf and a mass losing giant. They exhibit unique spectral features at 6825 \AA\ and 7082 \AA, which are formed via Raman scattering of \ion{O}{6}$\lambda\lambda$ 1032 and 1038 with atomic hydrogen. We adopt a Monte Carlo technique to generate the same number of \ion{O}{6}$\lambda$1032 and $\lambda$1038 line photons and compute the flux ratio $F(6825)/F(7082)$ of these Raman scattered \ion{O}{6} features formed in neutral regions with a simple geometric shape as a function of \ion{H}{1} column density $N_{HI}$. In cylindrical and spherical neutral regions with the \ion{O}{6} source embedded inside, the flux ratio $F(6825)/F(7082)$ shows an overall decrease from 3 to 1 as $N_{HI}$ increases in the range $10^{22-24}{\rm\ cm^{-2}}$. In the cases of a slab geometry and other geometries with the \ion{O}{6} source outside the \ion{H}{1} region, Rayleigh escape operates to lower the flux ratio considerably. For moderate values of $N_{HI}\sim 10^{23}{\rm\ cm^{-2}}$ the flux ratio behaves in a complicated way to exhibit a broad bump with a peak value of 3.5 in the case of a sphere geometry. We find that the ratio of Raman conversion efficiencies of \ion{O}{6}$\lambda\lambda$1032, 1038 ranges from 0.8 to 3.5. Our high resolution spectra of 'D' type HM~Sge and 'S' type AG~Dra obtained with the {\it Canada-France-Hawaii-Telescope} show that the flux ratio $F(6825)/F(7082)$ of AG~Dra is significantly smaller than that of HM~Sge, implying that 'S' type symbiotics are characterized by higher $N_{HI}$ than 'D' type symbiotics., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Powered by a supermassive black hole with an accretion disk, the spectra of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are characterized by prominent emission lines including Balmer lines. The unification schemes of AGNs require the existence of a thick molecular torus that may hide the broad emission line region from the view of observers near the equatorial direction. In this configuration, one may expect that the far UV radiation from the central engine can be Raman scattered by neutral hydrogen to reappear around Balmer and Paschen emission lines which can be identified with broad wings. We produce H$\alpha$, H$\beta$ and Pa$\alpha$ wings using a Monte Carlo technique to investigate their properties. The neutral scattering region is assumed to be a cylindrical torus specified by the inner and outer radii and the height. While the covering factor of the scattering region affects the overall strengths of the wings, the wing widths are primarily dependent on the neutral hydrogen column density $N_{\rm HI}$ being roughly proportional to $N_{\rm HI}^{1/2}$. In particular, with $N_{\rm HI}=10^{23}{\rm\ cm^{-2}}$ the H$\alpha$ wings typically show a width $\sim 2\times 10^4{\rm\ km\ s^{-1}}$. We also find that H$\alpha$ and Pa$\alpha$ wing profiles are asymmetric with the red part stronger than the blue part and an opposite behavior is seen for H$\beta$ wings., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the high resolution spectra of the symbiotic star V1016 Cygni obtained with the Bohyunsan Optical Echelle Spectrograph in 2003 and 2005, from which we find a broad emission feature at 4881 \AA. We propose that this broad feature is formed from Raman scattering of Ne VII$\lambda973$ by atomic hydrogen. Thus far, the detection of Raman scattered lines by atomic hydrogen is limited to O VI$\lambda\lambda$1032, 1038 and He II$\lambda\lambda$940, 972 and 1025. With the adoption of the center wavelength 973.302 \AA\ of Ne VII$\lambda$973 and consideration of the air refractive index of $n_{air}=1.000279348$, the atomic line center of the Raman scattered Ne VII feature is determined to be 4880.53 \AA. The total cross section at the line center of Ne VII$\lambda973$ is computed to be $2.62\times 10^{-22}{\rm\ cm^2}$ with the branching ratio of 0.17. We perform Monte Carlo simulations to fit the Raman scattered Ne VII$\lambda973$. Assuming that the Ne VII and He II emission regions share the same kinematics with respect to the neutral scattering region, we find that the Raman scattered He II$\lambda$972 at 4850 \AA\ and Ne VII$\lambda$973 at 4881 \AA\ are excellently fitted. We also propose that the He II and Ne VII emission regions were stationary with respect to the H I region in 2003 but that they were receding from it with a velocity $\sim 20{\rm\ km\ s^{-1}}$ in 2005., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Damped Ly\alpha\ systems (DLAs) observed in the quasar spectra are characterized by a high neutral hydrogen column density $N_{HI}>2\times 10^{20}{\rm\ cm^{-2}}$. The absorption wing profiles are often fitted using the Voigt function due to the fact that the scattering cross section near resonant line center is approximately described by the Lorentzian function. Since a hydrogen atom has infinitely many $p$ states that participate in the electric dipole interaction, the cross section starts to deviate from the Lorentzian in an asymmetric way in the line wing regions. We investigate this asymmetry in the absorption line profiles around Ly\alpha\ and Ly\beta\ as a function of the neutral hydrogen column density $N_{HI}$. In terms of $\Delta\lambda\equiv\lambda-\lambda_\alpha$ we expand the Kramers-Heisenberg formula around Ly\alpha\ to find $\sigma(\lambda)\simeq (0.5 f_{12})^2\sigma_{T}(\Delta\lambda/\lambda_\alpha)^{-2}[1+3.792 (\Delta\lambda/\lambda_\alpha)]$, where $f_{12}$ and $\sigma_T$ are the oscillator strength of Ly$\alpha$ and the Thomson scattering cross section, respectively. In terms of $\Delta\lambda_2\equiv\lambda-\lambda_\beta$ in the vicinity of Ly\beta, the total scattering cross section, given as the sum of cross sections for Rayleigh and Raman scattering, is shown to be $\sigma(\lambda)\simeq \sigma_T(0.5f_{13})^2(1+R_0) (\Delta\lambda_2/\lambda_\beta)^{-2}[1-24.68(\Delta\lambda_2/\lambda_\beta)]$ with $f_{13}$ and the factor $R_0=0.1342$ being the oscillator strength for Ly\beta\ and the ratio of Raman cross section to Rayleigh cross section, respectively. A redward asymmetry develops around Ly\alpha\ whereas a blue asymmetry is obtained for Ly\beta. We present the high resolution spectra of the youn and compact planerary nebula NGC 6790 obtained with the echelle spectrograph at Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory and report the discovery of Raman scattered He II 6545 in this object. This line feature is formed in a thick neutral region surrounding the hot central star, where He II 1025 line photons are scattered inelastically by hydrogen atoms. A Monte Carlo technique is adopted to compute the line profile with a simple geometric model, in which the neutral region is in the form of a cylindrical shell that is expanding from the central star. From our line profile analysis, the expansion velocity of the HI region lies in the range V_exp = 15- 19 Km/s. Less stringent constraints are put on the HI column density N_HI and covering factor C, where the total flux of Raman He II 6545 is consistent with the product of N_HI and C being CN_HI ~ 0.5 X 10^20 cm^-2. The Monte Carlo profiles from stationary emission models exhibit deficit in the wing parts. A much better fit is obtained when the He II emission region is assumed to take the form of a ring that slowly rotates with a rotation speed ~ 18Km/s. Brief discussions are presented regarding the mass loss processes and future observations.

We present the high resolution spectra of the D type symbiotic stars V1016 Cygni and HM Sagittae obtained with the Bohyunsan Optical Echelle Spectrograph (BOES), and investigate the double-peaked asymmetric profiles of the Raman scattered O VI 6825. By adopting a wind accretion disk model, we assume that the O VI emission region is described by a Keplerian thin disk. The Raman scattering occurs in a neutral region near the giant, taking in the form of a slow stellar wind, part of which is ionized by the strong UV radiation from the hot white dwarf. Using a Monte Carlo technique, we compute the line profiles that are modulated by the slow spherical stellar wind from the giant component with the ionization front approximated by a hyperboloid. In order to account for the asymmetry and the existence of a central dip in the profiles, we add an O VI resonance scattering region between the hot white dwarf and the giant star which hinders the incidence of slightly blue O VI photons upon the H I region. Overall good fits to the observed data are obtained from our model, which lends support to the accretion disk emission model in these objects. The best fitting parameters for V1016 Cyg are $v_o=30{\rm km s^{-1}}$, $v_\infty=11{\rm km s^{-1}}$, and $v_{c}=10{\rm km s^{-1}}$, where $v_o$, $v_\infty$ and $v_{c}$ are the velocity of the outer disk rim, the terminal velocity of the giant wind, and the velocity component of the resonance scattering O VI region along the binary axis, respectively. Similar fitting parameters $v_o=27{\rm km s^{-1}}$, $v_\infty=10{\rm km s^{-1}}$ and $v_{c}=9{\rm km s^{-1}}$ are obtained for HM Sge. We present our spectroscopic data around H$\beta$ of the symbiotic star V1016 Cyg obtained with the Bohyunsan Echelle Spectrograph, in order to secure the broad emission feature at around 4850\AA, which is formed through Raman scattering of He II $\lambda$ 972. The total cross section around Ly$\gamma$ is approximately given by $\sigma(\lambda)\simeq 1.7\times 10^{-28}[\lambda_{Ly\gamma}/(\lambda -\lambda_{Ly\gamma})]^2{\rm cm^2}$, with $\lambda_{Ly\gamma}$ being the line centre wavelength of Ly$\gamma$. We find a centre shift redward by an amount $\Delta\lambda= +0.64{\rm \AA}$ in the Raman scattered He II $\lambda$ 4850. This redward centre shift is exactly analogous to the effect for the Raman scattered He II $\lambda$ 6545 blueward of H$\alpha$ discussed in our previous study. We compute the branching ratios of Raman scattering into the level $2s$ and levels $3s,$ and 3d, which are subsequently incorporated in our Monte Carlo code. Assuming that He II $\lambda$ 972 emission is characterized by a single Gaussian profile, the redward peak shift observed in the Raman scattered He II 4850 feature corresponds to the neutral column density $N_{HI}=1.2\times 10^{21}{\rm\ cm^{-2}}$. Assuming that the covering factor $\sim 0.1$ of the scattering region with respect to the He II emission region and adopting a simple spherical stellar wind model, we may place an upper bound $\dot M \le 3.6\times 10^{-7}{\rm M_\odot yr^{-1}}$ for the mass loss rate of the giant component of V1016 Cyg. Using a Monte Carlo technique, we investigate the center shifts that are expected to occur for the broad H$\alpha$ wings and the He II $\lambda$ 6545 feature as a function of the neutral hydrogen column density in symbiotic stars.These two features are proposed to be formed via Raman scattering of UV continuum around Ly$\beta$ and He II $\lambda$ 1025 emission line by neutral hydrogen. The branching ratio of Raman scattering to Rayleigh scattering for UV radiation around Ly$\beta$ is a non-linearly increasing function of the wavelength, which results in enhanced Raman optical fluxes redward of the H$\alpha$ line center as $N_{HI}$ increases. However, we find that the amount of wing center shift is quite small about $20{\rm km s^{-1}}$ as $N_{HI}$ increases from $10^{20}{\rm cm^{-2}}$ to $10^{21}{\rm cm^{-2}}$. Assuming that He II $\lambda$~1025 emission is characterized by a Gaussian profile, the Raman scattered He II 6545 feature exhibits near Gaussian profiles with the peak shifted redward for $N_{HI}<10^{22}{\rm cm^{-2}}$. The redward center shift amounts to $1{\rm \AA}$ for $N_{HI}\sim 10^{20}{\rm cm^{-2}}$ and decreases as $N_{HI}$ increases up to $N_{HI}\sim 10^{22}{\rm cm^{-2}}$, above which no center shift is observed. The redward peak shift is due to the fact that the incident emission profile is symmetric with respect to He II $\lambda$~1025 line center whereas the Raman conversion rate is increasing towards the line center of Ly$\beta$. We emphasize that the determination of $N_{HI}$ by locating the exact peak position of the He II 6545 feature will lift the degeneracy to allow a more accurate estimate of the covering factor of the neutral region, providing strong constraints on the mass loss process occurring in symbiotic stars., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a low energy expansion of the Kramers-Heisenberg formula for atomic hydrogen in terms of $(\omega/\omega_l)$, where $\omega_l$ and $\omega$ are the angular frequencies corresponding to the Lyman limit and the incident radiation, respectively. The leading term is proportional to $(\omega/\omega_l)^4$, which admits a well-known classical interpretation. With higher order terms we achieve accuracy with errors less than 4 % of the scattering cross sections in the region $\omega/\omega_l\le 0.6$. In the neighboring region around Ly$\alpha$ ($\omega/\omega_l >0.6$), we also present an explicit expansion of the Kramers-Heisenberg formula in terms of $\Delta\omega\equiv (\omega-\omega_{Ly\alpha})/\omega_{Ly\alpha}$. The accuracy with errors less than 4 % can be attained for $\omega/\omega_l \ge 0.6$ with the expansion up to the fifth order of $\Delta\omega$. We expect that these formulae will be usefully applied to the radiative transfer in high neutral column density regions, including the Gunn-Peterson absorption troughs and Rayleigh scattering in the atmospheres of giants., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

We present a spectrum of the symbiotic star V1016 Cyg observed with the 3.6 m Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, in order to illustrate a method to measure the covering factor of the neutral scattering region around the giant component with respect to the hot emission region around the white dwarf component. In the spectrum, we find broad wings around H$\alpha$ and a broad emission feature around 6545${\rm \AA}$ that is blended with the [N II]$ \lambda$ 6548 line. These two features are proposed to be formed by Raman scattering by atomic hydrogen, where the incident radiation is proposed to be UV continuum radiation around Ly$\beta$ in the former case and He II $\lambda$ 1025 emission line arising from $n=6\to n=2$ transitions for the latter feature. We remove the H$\alpha$ wings by a template Raman scattering wing profile and subtract the [N II] $\lambda$ 6548 line using the 3 times stronger [N II] $\lambda$ 6583 feature in order to isolate the He II Raman scattered 6545 \AA line. We obtain the flux ratio $F_{6545}/F_{6560}=0.24$ of the He II $\lambda$ 6560 emission line and the 6545 \AA feature for V1016 Cyg. Under the assumption that the He II emission from this object is isotropic, this ratio is converted to the ratio $\Phi_{6545}/\Phi_{1025}=0.17$ of the number of the incident photons and that of the scattered photons. This implies that the scattering region with H I column density $N_{HI}\ge 10^{20}{\rm cm^{-2}}$ covers 17 per cent of the emission region. By combining the presumed binary period $\sim 100$ yrs of this system we infer that a significant fraction of the slow stellar wind from the Mira component is ionized and that the scattering region around the Mira extends a few tens of AU, which is closely associated with the mass loss process of the Mira component., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We investigate the asymmetry of the scattering cross section of radiation around Ly$\alpha$ by atomic hydrogen, which may be applied to analyses of scattering media with high column neutral hydrogen densities including damped Ly$\alpha$ absorption systems of quasars. The exact scattering cross section is given by the Kramers-Heisenberg formula obtained from the fully quantum mechanical second-order time dependent theory, where, in the case of hydrogen, each matrix element is given in a closed analytical form. The asymmetric deviation of the scattering cross section from the Lorentzian near the line center is computed by expanding the Kramers-Heisenberg formula in terms of $\Delta\omega /\omega_{Ly\alpha}$,where $\omega_{Ly\alpha}$ is the angular frequency of the Ly$\alpha$ transition and $\Delta\omega$ is the deviation of incident radiation from $\omega_{Ly\alpha}$. To the first order of $\Delta\omega/\omega_{Ly\alpha}$, we obtain $\sigma(\omega) = \sigma_T (0.5 f_{12} \omega_{Ly\alpha}/\Delta\omega)^2 (1-1.79\Delta\omega / \omega_{Ly\alpha})$, where $\sigma_T$ is the Thomson scattering cross section and $f_{12}=0.4162$ is the oscillator strength for the Ly$\alpha$ transition. With this deviation, the line center of the damped wing profile apparently shifts blueward of the true Ly$\alpha$ line center. In the case of a dampedLy$\alpha$ system with a H I column density $5\times 10^{21}{\rm cm^{-2}}$, the apparent line center shift relative to the true center amounts to $0.2{\rm \AA}$ resulting in an underestimation of redshift by $\Delta z\sim 10^{-4}$. A measurable underestimation by an amount of $\Delta z\sim 10^{-3}$ is expected for absorbing systems with $N_{HI}\ge 4\times 10^{22}{\rm cm^{-2}}$., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, ApJ in press

In many symbiotic stars there appear broad wings around H alpha, of which the formation mechanism proposed thus far includes a fast outflow, the inner accretion disc motion, electron scattering and Raman scattering of Ly beta. We adopt a Monte Carlo technique to simulate the Raman scattering of UV photons that are converted into optical photons around H alpha forming broad wings, and compute its polarisation. Noting that many symbiotic stars exhibit a bipolar nebular morphology and polarisation flip in the red wing part of the Raman scattered O {\tiny{VI}} features, we assume that the neutral scattering region is composed of the two components. The first component is a static cylindrical shell with finite thickness and the other component is a finite slab that is moving away with velocity v_p = 100 km s^{-1} along the symmetry axis of the first component. The cylindrical shell component yields polarisation in the direction parallel to the cylinder axis. The polarisation near the line-centre is weaker than in the far wing regions because of the large Rayleigh scattering numbers due to the large scattering cross sections near the line centre. The receding polar scattering component produces strong polarisation in the direction perpendicular to the cylinder axis. When the both scattering components coexist, the polarisation is characterised by weak parallel polarisation near the line-centre and strong perpendicular polarisation in the red part. P-Cygni type Lya profiles exhibited in nearly half of starburst galaxies, both nearby and high-z, are believed to be formed by an expanding supershell surrounding a star-forming region. We apply the Monte Carlo code which was developed previously for static and plane-parallel medium to calculate the Lya line transfer in a supershell of neutral hydrogen which are expanding radially in a spherical bulk flow. We consider typical cases that the supershell has the Lya line-centre optical depth of $\tau_0=10^5-10^7$, a radial expansion velocity of $V_exp = 300 km/s, and the turbulence of b=40 km/s. We find that there appear a few emission peaks at the frequencies corresponding to (2N-1) V_exp, where the order of back scatterings N > 1. As V_exp -> b, the emergent profiles become similar to those for the static medium and the peaks are less prominent. We also investigate the effects of column density of the supershell on the emergent Lya profiles. We find that the number and the flux ratios of emission peaks are determined by interplay of $\tau_0$ and V_exp of the supershell. We have investigated the linear polarisation of Lya transferred in a static, dustless, and thick plane-parallel slab that is uniformly filled with neutral hydrogen. Because the scattering phase function is characterised by the dipole type for wing scatterings of Lya, which is in high contrast with more isotropic scattering phase function associated with resonant scatterings, the polarisation of the emergent Lya is dominantly controlled by the number of wing scatterings before escape from the slab. When the scattering medium is extremely thick, photons emergent in the grazing direction are polarised in the direction perpendicular to the slab normal up to 12%, which coincides with the limit attained by the Thomson scattered radiation in a semi-infinite thick medium investigated by Chandrasekhar in 1960. The number of wing scatterings before escape is sensitively dependent on the product of the Voigt parameter $a$ and the line-centre optical depth $\tau_0$, with which the variation of the degree of polarisation can also be explained in comparison with the Thomson scattering case. The polarisation direction is parallel to the slab normal when $a\tau_0<10^3$, while it is perpendicular when $a\tau_0>10^3$. Our simulated spectropolarimetry of Lya from a highly thick medium is characterised by negligible polarisation around the line centre, parallel polarisation in the near wing parts and perpendicular polarisation in the far wing parts, where the polarisation direction is measured with respect to the slab normal. The polarisation flip naturally reflects the diffusive nature of the Lya transfer process in both real space and frequency space. We compute the profiles of resonance doublet lines formed in bipolar winds with velocity greater than the doublet separation in symbiotic stars. Particular attention has been paid on the doublet line ratio, where the conversion of the short wavelength component arising from the $2S_{1/2}-2P_{3/2}$ transition into the long wavelengh component for the transition $2S_{1/2}-2P_{1/2}$ plays an essential role in determining the flux line ratio of the doublet. We adopted a Monte Carlo technique and the Sobolev approximation. Our bipolar winds take the form of a cone and are characterised by the terminal wind velocity, mass loss rate and the opening angle of the cone. When the observer is in the polar direction and the Sobolev optical depth is moderate $\tau_{Sob}\simeq 1$, then we mainly obtain profiles with inverted flux line ratios, where the short wavelength component is weaker than the long wavelength component. When the observer is in the equatorial direction, we find that the profiles are characterised by two broad components, where the long wavelength component is the broader and stronger of the two. We conclude that the profiles obtained in our model provide qualitative understanding of broad and inverted intensity ratio of the doublets in symbiotic stars and that the bipolarity of the stellar winds can be inferred from the broader and stronger long wavelength components in the doublet., Comment: 11 pages including 9 figures. The Lya line transfer in an extremely thick medium of neutral hydrogen is investigated by adopting an accelerating scheme in our Monte Carlo code to skip a large number of core or resonant scatterings. This scheme reduces computing time significantly with no sacrifice in the accuracy of the results. We applied this numerical method to the Lya transfer in a static, uniform, dustless, and plane-parallel medium. Two types of photon sources have been considered, the midplane source and the uniformly distributed sources. The emergent profiles show double peaks and absorption trough at the line-center. We compared our results with the analytic solutions derived by previous researchers, and confirmed that both solutions are in good agreement with each other. We investigated the directionality of the emergent Lya photons and found that limb brightening is observed in slightly thick media while limb darkening appears in extremely thick media. The behavior of the directionality is noted to follow that of the Thomson scattered radiation in electron clouds, because both Lya wing scattering and Thomson scattering share the same Rayleigh scattering phase function. The mean number of wing scatterings just before escape is in exact agreement with the prediction of the diffusion approximation. The Lya photons constituting the inner part of the emergent profiles follow the relationship derived from the diffusion approximation. Recent cosmological observations indicate that the reionized universe may have started at around z=6, where a significant suppression around Ly alpha has been observed from the neutral intergalactic medium. The associated neutral hydrogen column density is expected to exceed 10^{21}cm^{-2}},where it is very important to use the accurate scattering cross section known as the Kramers-Heisenberg formula that is obtained from the fully quantum mechanical time-dependent second order perturbation theory. We present the Kramers-Heisenberg formula and compare it with the formula introduced in a heuristic way by Peebles (1993) treating the hydrogen atom as a two-level atom, from which we find a devitaion by a factor of two in the red wing region far from the line center. Adopting simple cosmological models, we compute the Gunn-Peterson optical depths and the trough profiles. Our results are compared with the works performed by Madau & Rees (2000), who adopted the cross section introduced by Peebles. We find deviations up to 5 per cent in the Gunn-Peterson transmission coefficient for an accelerated expanding universe in the red off-resonance wing part with the rest wavelength Delta_lambda~10{AA}., Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures

Recent developments in the spectropolarimetric study of compact objects, specifically black holes (stellar and massive) and neutron stars are reviewed. The lectures are organized around five topics: disks, jets, outflows, neutron stars and black holes. They emphasize physical mechanisms and are intended to bridge the gap between the fundamentals of polarimetry and the phenomenology of observed cosmic sources of polarized radiation, as covered by the other lecturers. There has been considerable recent progress in spectropolarimetry from radio through optical frequencies and this is producing some unique diagnostics of the physical conditions around compact objects. In this Letter, we report the detection of an emission feature around 6545 \AA in the spectra of the bipolar planetary nebula M2-9 and the symbiotic stars RR Telescopii and He 2-106 and propose to identify it as the He II Raman scattered feature. This feature was predicted by Nussbaumer, Schmid & Vogel (1989), who suggested that it is formed through Raman scattering by atomic hydrogen of He II $n=6\to n=2$ photons with slightly shorter wavelength than that of Ly$\beta$. The scattering cross section $\sim 10^{-20}{\rm cm^2}$ for this process implies the existence of a neutral hydrogen component with a column density $N_{HI}\sim 10^{20}{\rm cm^{-2}}$ around the He II emission regions in these objects, which are believed to be associated with the mass loss process in the late stage of stellar evolution. We investigate the Lyman alpha line transfer in nearby and high redshift starbursting galaxies, where the effect of high optical depths and the role of dust in the scattering medium are expected to be conspicuous and should be treated in a very careful manner. We present our first results in dustless, static, and uniform HI media with moderate Lyman alpha line center optical depths \tau_0=10^{3-6}. We assume that the temperatures of media to be T=10^{1-4}K, and use a Monte Carlo technique. We investigate the basic processes of the line transfer and confirm the criterion of a\tau_0>10^3 for the validity of diffusion approximation suggested by Neufeld in 1990, where $a$ is the Voigt parameter. Adopting the model suggested by Tenorio-Tagle et al., we performed calculations on the Lyman alpha line formation for each evolutionary stage of an expanding supershell. The emergent Lyman alpha profiles are characterized by the double peaks and the absorption trough at the line center. We found that the absorption troughs expected in most of the evolutionary stages are not wide enough to be observed with current instruments. However, the absorption trough in the Lyman alpha emission profile from an expanding recombining supershell can be marginally detected., Comment: 38 pages, 12 figures, Accepted for publication in the ApJ
