Search

Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) still face challenges when recognizing time-variant rare-phrases. Contextual biasing (CB) modules bias ASR model towards such contextually-relevant phrases. During training, a list of biasing phrases are selected from a large pool of phrases following a sampling strategy. In this work we firstly analyse different sampling strategies to provide insights into the training of CB for ASR with correlation plots between the bias embeddings among various training stages. Secondly, we introduce a neighbourhood attention (NA) that localizes self attention (SA) to the nearest neighbouring frames to further refine the CB output. The results show that this proposed approach provides on average a 25.84% relative WER improvement on LibriSpeech sets and rare-word evaluation compared to the baseline., Comment: Accepted for IEEE ASRU 2023

On-device Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) models trained on speech data of a large population might underperform for individuals unseen during training. This is due to a domain shift between user data and the original training data, differed by user's speaking characteristics and environmental acoustic conditions. ASR personalisation is a solution that aims to exploit user data to improve model robustness. The majority of ASR personalisation methods assume labelled user data for supervision. Personalisation without any labelled data is challenging due to limited data size and poor quality of recorded audio samples. This work addresses unsupervised personalisation by developing a novel consistency based training method via pseudo-labelling. Our method achieves a relative Word Error Rate Reduction (WERR) of 17.3% on unlabelled training data and 8.1% on held-out data compared to a pre-trained model, and outperforms the current state-of-the art methods., Comment: Accepted for IEEE ASRU 2023

We demonstrate that the mode number of Andreev bound states in bilayer graphene Josephson junctions can be modulated by in situ control of the superconducting coherence length. By exploiting the quadratic band dispersion of bilayer graphene, we control the Fermi velocity and thus the coherence length by the application of the electrostatic gating. Tunneling spectroscopy of Andreev bound states reveals a crossover from short to long Josephson junction regimes as the gate voltage is approached near the charge neutral point of bilayer graphene. Furthermore, quantitative analysis of Andreev spectrums for different mode numbers allows us to quantitatively estimate the phase-dependent Josephson current. In high-sensitivity bolometers and calorimeters, the photon absorption often occurs at a finite distance from the temperature sensor to accommodate antennas or avoid the degradation of superconducting circuitry exposed to radiation. As a result, thermal propagation from the input to the temperature readout can critically affect detector performance. In this report we model the performance of a graphene bolometer, accounting for electronic thermal diffusion and dissipation via electron-phonon coupling at low temperatures in three regimes: clean, supercollision, and resonant scattering. Our results affirm the feasibility of a superconducting readout without Cooper-pair breaking by mid- and near-infrared photons, and provide a recipe for designing graphene absorbers for calorimetric single-photon detectors. We investigate the tradeoff between the input-readout distance and detector efficiency, and predict an intrinsic timing jitter of ~2.7 ps. Based on our result, we propose a spatial-mode-resolving photon detector to increase communication bandwidth.

Quasi-two-dimensional (Quasi-2D) van der Waals (vdW) materials can be mechanically or chemically exfoliated down to monolayer because of their strong intralayer bonding and the weak interlayer vdW interaction. Thanks to this unique property, one can often find exotic thickness-dependent electronic properties from these quasi-2D vdW materials, which can lead to band gap opening, emerging superconductivity, or enhanced charge density waves with decreasing thickness. Surface-sensitive scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) can provide direct observation of structural and electronic characteristics of such layered materials with atomic precision in real space. However, it is very challenging to preserve the intrinsic surfaces of air-sensitive quasi-2D materials between preparation and measurement. In addition, vdW 2D crystals after exfoliation are extremely hard to explore with a typical STM setup due to their small size (< 10 {\mu}m). Here, we present a straightforward method compatible with any STM setup having optical access: (1) exfoliating and/or stacking layered materials in a glove box, (2) transferring them to an ultra-high vacuum STM chamber using a suitcase without exposure to air, and (3) navigating surface to locate exfoliated vdW 2D flakes with different thicknesses. We successfully demonstrated that the clean surfaces of the air-sensitive Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ can be effectively protected from unwanted oxidation during transfer. Furthermore, our method provides a simple but useful way to access a specific tiny stack of layered materials without any ex-situ fabrication processes for STM navigation. We introduce a novel two-dimensional electronic system with ultrastrong interlayer interactions, namely twisted bilayer graphene with a large twist angle, as an ideal ground for realizing interlayer-coherent excitonic condensates. In these systems, subnanometer atomic separation between the layers allows significant interlayer interactions, while interlayer electron tunneling is geometrically suppressed due to the large twist angle. By fully exploiting these two features we demonstrate that a sequence of odd-integer quantum Hall states with interlayer coherence appears at the second Landau level (N = 1). Notably the energy gaps for these states are of order 1 K, which is several orders of magnitude greater than those in GaAs. Furthermore, a variety of quantum Hall phase transitions are observed experimentally. All the experimental observations are largely consistent with our phenomenological model calculations. Hence, we establish that a large twist angle system is an excellent platform for high-temperature excitonic condensation.

Stacking two-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) materials rotated with respect to each other show versatility for the study of exotic quantum phenomena. Especially, anisotropic layered materials have great potential for such twistronics applications, providing high tunability. Here, we report anisotropic superconducting order parameters in twisted Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x (Bi-2212) vdW junctions with an atomically clean vdW interface, achieved using the microcleave-and-stack technique. The vdW Josephson junctions with twist angles of 0{\deg} and 90{\deg} showed the maximum Josephson coupling, which was comparable to that of intrinsic Josephson (IJ) junctions in the bulk crystal. As the twist angle approaches 45{\deg}, Josephson coupling is suppressed, and eventually disappears at 45{\deg}. The observed twist angle dependence of the Josephson coupling can be explained quantitatively by theoretical calculation with the d-wave superconducting order parameter of Bi-2212 and finite tunneling incoherence of the junction. Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is a van der Waals semiconductor with a wide bandgap of ~ 5.96 eV. Despite the indirect bandgap characteristics of hBN, charge carriers excited by high energy electrons or photons efficiently emit luminescence at deep-ultraviolet (DUV) frequencies via strong electron-phonon interaction, suggesting potential DUV light emitting device applications. However, electroluminescence from hBN has not been demonstrated at DUV frequencies so far. In this study, we report DUV electroluminescence and photocurrent generation in graphene/hBN/graphene heterostructures at room temperature. Tunneling carrier injection from graphene electrodes into the band edges of hBN enables prominent electroluminescence at DUV frequencies. On the other hand, under DUV laser illumination and external bias voltage, graphene electrodes efficiently collect photo-excited carriers in hBN, which generates high photocurrent. Laser excitation micro-spectroscopy shows that the radiative recombination and photocarrier excitation processes in the heterostructures mainly originate from the pristine structure and the stacking faults in hBN. Engineering quantum states through light-matter interaction has created a new paradigm in condensed matter physics. A representative example is the Floquet-Bloch state, which is generated by time-periodically driving the Bloch wavefunctions in crystals. Previous attempts to realise such states in condensed matter systems have been limited by the transient nature of the Floquet states produced by optical pulses, which masks the universal properties of non-equilibrium physics. Here, we report the generation of steady Floquet Andreev (F-A) states in graphene Josephson junctions by continuous microwave application and direct measurement of their spectra by superconducting tunnelling spectroscopy. We present quantitative analysis of the spectral characteristics of the F-A states while varying the phase difference of superconductors, temperature, microwave frequency and power. The oscillations of the F-A state spectrum with phase difference agreed with our theoretical calculations. Moreover, we confirmed the steady nature of the F-A states by establishing a sum rule of tunnelling conductance, and analysed the spectral density of Floquet states depending on Floquet interaction strength. The Majorana zero-energy modes (MZMs) residing at the boundary of topological superconductors have attracted a great deal of interest recently, as they provide a platform to explore fundamental physics such as non-Abelian statistics, as well as fault-tolerant quantum computation. Period doubling of Shapiro steps in a Josephson junction under microwave irradiation has been regarded as strong evidence for the emergence of the MZMs at the junction edges. However, questions remain as to how the Shapiro steps respond to the presence of a 4{\pi}-periodic Josephson current. In this study, we investigated the characteristic features of Shapiro steps with respect to the ratio ({\alpha}) of the 4{\pi}-periodic current to the topologically trivial 2{\pi}-periodic one, as well as the reduced microwave frequency ({\Omega}) and McCumber parameter ({\beta}) of the junction. Our analysis reproduced Shapiro steps similar to those observed experimentally for specific parameter sets of {\alpha},{\Omega} ({\lesssim 0.1}), and {\beta} ({gtrsim 1.0}). Full suppression of the first lobe of the n=1 step guarantees the presence of a 4{\pi}-periodic Josephson current.In addition, we discuss the range of {\Omega} and {\beta} needed for full suppression of the first lobe of the {n=1} step, even for small {\alpha} ({<0.1}). To observe "period-doubled Shapiro steps", even with a small {\alpha}, the junction should have a large {I_c}{R_N} product and sufficiently large junction capacitance.

Current-induced control of magnetization in ferromagnets using spin-orbit torque (SOT) has drawn attention as a new mechanism for fast and energy efficient magnetic memory devices. Energy-efficient spintronic devices require a spin-current source with a large SOT efficiency (${\xi}$) and electrical conductivity (${\sigma}$), and an efficient spin injection across a transparent interface. Herein, we use single crystals of the van der Waals (vdW) topological semimetal WTe$_2$ and vdW ferromagnet Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ to satisfy the requirements in their all-vdW-heterostructure with an atomically sharp interface. The results exhibit values of ${\xi}{\approx}4.6$ and ${\sigma}{\approx}2.25{\times}10^5 {\Omega}^{-1} m^{-1}$ for WTe$_2$. Moreover, we obtain the significantly reduced switching current density of $3.90{\times}10^6 A/cm^2$ at 150 K, which is an order of magnitude smaller than those of conventional heavy-metal/ ferromagnet thin films. These findings highlight that engineering vdW-type topological materials and magnets offers a promising route to energy-efficient magnetization control in SOT-based spintronics., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures

Intercalation is an effective method to improve and modulate properties of two-dimensional materials. Even so, spatially controlled intercalation at atomic scale, which is important to introduce and modulated properties, has not been successful due to difficulties in controlling the diffusion of intercalants. Here, we show formation of angstrom-wide conductive channels (~4.3 A) in black phosphorus by Cu intercalation. The atomic structure, resultant microstructural effects, intercalation mechanism, and local variations of electronic properties modulated in black phosphorus by Cu intercalation were investigated extensively by transmission electron microscopy including in situ observation, DFT calculation, and conductive atomic force microscopy.

Josephson junctions (JJs) are ubiquitous superconducting devices, enabling high sensitivity magnetometers and voltage amplifiers, as well as forming the basis of high performance cryogenic computer and superconducting quantum computers. While JJ performance can be degraded by quasiparticles (QPs) formed from broken Cooper pairs, this phenomenon also opens opportunities to sensitively detect electromagnetic radiation. Here we demonstrate single near-infrared photon detection by coupling photons to the localized surface plasmons of a graphene-based JJ. Using the photon-induced switching statistics of the current-biased JJ, we reveal the critical role of QPs generated by the absorbed photon in the detection mechanism. Monolayer and few-layer phosphorene are anisotropic quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) van der Waals (vdW) semiconductors with a linear-dichroic light-matter interaction and a widely-tunable direct-band gap in the infrared frequency range. Despite recent theoretical predictions of strongly-bound excitons with unique properties, it remains experimentally challenging to probe the excitonic quasiparticles due to the severe oxidation during device fabrication. In this study, we report observation of strongly-bound excitons and trions with highly-anisotropic optical properties in intrinsic bilayer phosphorene, which are protected from oxidation by encapsulation with hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), in a field-effect transistor (FET) geometry. Reflection contrast and photoluminescence spectroscopy clearly reveal the linear-dichroic optical spectra from anisotropic excitons and trions in the hBN-encapsulated bilayer phosphorene. The optical resonances from the exciton Rydberg series indicate that the neutral exciton binding energy is over 100 meV even with the dielectric screening from hBN. The electrostatic injection of free holes enables an additional optical resonance from a positive trion (charged exciton) ~ 30 meV below the optical bandgap of the charge-neutral system. NiO thin films with various strains were grown on SrTiO3 (STO) and MgO substrates using a pulsed laser deposition technique. The films were characterized using an x-ray diffractometer, atomic force microscopy, and infrared reflectance spectroscopy. The films grown on STO (001) substrate show a compressive in-plane strain which increases as the film thickness is reduced, resulting in an increase of the NiO phonon frequency. On the other hand, a tensile strain was detected in the NiO film grown on MgO (001) substrate which induces a softening of the phonon frequency. Overall, the variation of in-plane strain from -0.36% to +0.48% yields the decrease of the phonon frequency from 409.6 cm-1 to 377.5 cm-1 which occurs due to the ~1% change of the inter-atomic distances. The magnetic exchange -driven phonon splitting Delta(W) in three different sample, with relaxed (i.e. zero) strain, 0.36% compressive and 0.48% tensile strain was measured as a function of temperature. The Delta(W) increases on cooling in NiO relaxed film as in the previously published work on a bulk crystal. The splitting increases on cooling also in 0.48% tensile strained film, but Delta(W) is systematically 3-4 cm-1 smaller than in relaxed film. Since the phonon splitting is proportional to the non-dominant magnetic exchange interaction J1, the reduction of phonon splitting in tensile-strained film was explained by a diminishing J1 with lattice expansion. Increase of Delta(W) on cooling can be also explained by rising of J1 with reduced temperature.

We propose a new dark-matter detection strategy that will enable the search of super-light dark matter $m_\chi \simeq 0.1$ keV, representing an improvement of the minimum detectable mass by more than three order of magnitude over the ongoing experiments. This is possible by integrating intimately the target material, $\pi$-bond electrons in graphene, into a Josephson junction to achieve a high sensitivity detector that can resolve a small energy exchange from dark matter as low as $\sim 0.1$ meV. We investigate detection prospects with pg-, ng-, and $\mu$g-scale detectors by calculating the scattering rate between dark matter and free electrons confined in two-dimensional graphene with Pauli-blocking factors included. A beam of holes formed in graphene by a collimating contact is imaged using a liquid-He cooled scanning probe microscope (SPM). The mean free path of holes is greater than the device dimensions. A zigzag shaped pattern on both sides of the collimating contact absorb holes that enter at large angles. The image charge beneath the SPM tip defects holes, and the pattern of flow is imaged by displaying the change in conductance between contacts on opposite sides, as the tip is raster scanned across the sample. Collimation is confirmed by bending hole trajectories away from the receiving contact with an applied magnetic field. Sensitive microwave detectors are critical instruments in radioastronomy, dark matter axion searches, and superconducting quantum information science. The conventional strategy towards higher-sensitivity bolometry is to nanofabricate an ever-smaller device to augment the thermal response. However, this direction is increasingly more difficult to obtain efficient photon coupling and maintain the material properties in a device with a large surface-to-volume ratio. Here we advance this concept to an ultimately thin bolometric sensor based on monolayer graphene. To utilize its minute electronic specific heat and thermal conductivity, we develop a superconductor-graphene-superconductor (SGS) Josephson junction bolometer embedded in a microwave resonator of resonant frequency 7.9 GHz with over 99\% coupling efficiency. From the dependence of the Josephson switching current on the operating temperature, charge density, input power, and frequency, we demonstrate a noise equivalent power (NEP) of 7 $\times 10^{-19}$ W/Hz$^{1/2}$, corresponding to an energy resolution of one single photon at 32 GHz and reaching the fundamental limit imposed by intrinsic thermal fluctuation at 0.19 K., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

The noncentrosymmetric Td-WTe$_2$, previously known as a type-II Weyl semimetal, is expected to have higher order topological phases with topologically protected, helical one-dimensional (1D) hinge states when their scarcely separated Weyl points get annihilated. However, the detection of these hinge states is difficult in the presence of the semimetallic behaviour of the bulk. Here, we spatially resolved the hinge states by analysing the magnetic field interference of supercurrent in Nb-WTe$_2$-Nb proximity Josephson junctions. The Josephson current along the a-axis of the WTe$_2$ crystal, but not along the b-axis, showed sharp enhancements at the edges of the junction; the amount of enhanced Josephson current was comparable to the upper limits of a single 1D conduction channel. Our experimental observations provide evidence of the higher order topological phase in WTe$_2$ and its corresponding anisotropic topological hinge states, in good agreement with theoretical calculations. MnO thin films with various thicknesses and strains were grown on MgO substrates by pulsed laser deposition, then characterized using x-ray diffraction and infrared reflectance spectroscopy. Films grown on (001)-oriented MgO substrates exhibit homogenous biaxial compressive strain which increases as the film thickness is reduced. For that reason, the frequency of doubly-degenerate phonon increases with the strain, and splits below N\'eel temperature TN due to the magnetic-exchange interaction. Films grown on (110)-oriented MgO substrates exhibit a huge phonon splitting already at room temperature due to the anisotropic in-plane compressive strain. Below TN, additional phonon is activated in the IR spectra; this trend is evidence for a spin-order-induced structural phase transition from tetragonal to monoclinic phase. Total phonon splitting is 55 cm-1 in (110)-oriented MnO film, which is more than twice the value in bulk MnO. This result is evidence that the nearest neighbor exchange interaction, which is responsible for the magnetically driven phonon splitting, is greatly increased in compressively strained films.

Recently, lattice dynamics of the highly strained europium monoxide, as a promising candidate for strong ferroelectric-ferromagnet material, applied in the next-generation storage devices, attracted huge attention in the solid-state electronics. Here, the authors investigate the effect of tensile strain on dielectric properties of pulsed laser deposited EuO thin films from 10 to 200 K. A nearly 3% out-of-plane lattice compression is observed as the film thickness was reduced to 8 nm, which could originate from the lattice mismatch between film and a LaAlO3 substrate. The temperature and frequency dependence of capacitance and loss factor of the films reveals the dominant role of electronic and ionic polarization below 100 K. The interdigitated capacitor fabricated on strained film shows almost 50% increase of capacitance compared to the relaxed one, which corresponds to a considerable increase of dielectric constant induced by in-plane tensile strain. Softening of the in-plane polarized transverse phonon modes of EuO lattice due to tensile strain might have the major contribution to this behaviour according to the Lyddane-Sachs-Teller relation.

The dielectric properties of NiO thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition have been studied as a function of strain at temperature from 10 to 300 K. Above 150 K, the contribution of space-charge polarization to the dielectric permittivity of NiO films becomes dominant and the more defective films, which were grown at low temperatures show a drastical increase in the dielectric constant up to room temperature. While the atomically-ordered film, which was grown at high temperature doesn't show any considerable change in the dielectric constant in the range from 10 to 300 K. Below 100 K, the effect of strain on the dielectric constant becomes clear. An increase in dielectric permittivity is observed in the strained films while the relaxed film doesn't show any remarkable deviation from its bulk value. The low-temperature dielectric behavior of NiO thin film can be interpreted based on the effect of strain on the lattice dynamics of rocksalt binary oxides.

Here we systematically explore the use of pulsed laser deposition technique (PLD) to grow three basic oxides that have rocksalt structure but different chemical stability in the ambient atmosphere: NiO (stable), MnO (metastable) and EuO (unstable). By tuning laser fluence, an epitaxial single-phase nickel oxide thin-film growth can be achieved in a wide range of temperatures from 10 to 750 {\deg}C. At the lowest growth temperature, the out-of-plane strain raises to 1.5%, which is five times bigger than that in a NiO film grown at 750 {\deg}C. MnO thin films that had long-range ordered were successfully deposited on the MgO substrates after appropriate tuning of deposition parameters. The growth of MnO phase was strongly influenced by substrate temperature and laser fluence. EuO films with satisfactory quality were deposited by PLD after oxygen availability had been minimized. Synthesis of EuO thin films at rather low growth temperature prevented thermally-driven lattice relaxation and allowed growth of strained films. Overall, PLD was a quick and reliable method to grow binary oxides with rocksalt structure in high quality that can satisfy requirements for applications and for basic research.

We articulate the challenges and opportunities of unconventional devices using the photon like flow of electrons in graphene, such as Graphene Klein Tunnel (GKT) transistors. The underlying physics is the employment of momentum rather than energy filtering to engineer a gate tunable transport gap in a 2D Dirac cone bandstructure. In the ballistic limit, we get a clean tunable gap that implies subthermal switching voltages below the Boltzmann limit, while maintaining a high saturating current in the output characteristic. In realistic structures, detailed numerical simulations and experiments show that momentum scattering, especially from the edges, bleeds leakage paths into the transport gap and turns it into a pseudogap. We quantify the importance of reducing edge roughness and overall geometry on the low-bias transfer characteristics of GKT transistors and benchmark against experimental data. We find that geometry plays a critical role in determining the performance of electron optics based devices that utilize angular resolution of electrons.

The linear energy-momentum dispersion, coupled with pseudo-spinors, makes graphene an ideal solid-state material platform to realize an electronic device based on Dirac-Fermionic relativistic quantum mechanics. Employing local gate control, several examples of electronic devices based on Dirac fermion dynamics have been demonstrated, including Klein tunneling, negative refraction and specular Andreev reflection. In this work, we present a quantum switch based on analogous Dirac-fermion-optics (DFO), in which the angle dependence of Klein tunneling is explicitly utilized to build tunable collimators and reflectors for the quantum wave function of Dirac fermions. We employ a novel dual-source design with a single flat reflector, which minimizes diffusive edge scattering and suppresses the background incoherent transmission. Our gate-tunable collimator-reflector device design enables measurement of the net DFO contribution in the switching device operation. We measure a full set of transmission coefficients of DFO wavefunction between multiple leads of the device, separating the classical contribution from that of any disorder in the channel. Since the DFO quantum switch demonstrated in this work requires no explicit energy gap, the switching operation is expected to be robust against thermal fluctuations and inhomogeneity length scales comparable to the Fermi wavelength. We find our quantum switch works at an elevated temperature up to 230 K and large bias current density up to 102 A/m, over a wide range of carrier densities. Topological materials which possess topologically protected surface states have attracted much attention in recent years. In this work, we study the critical current of superconductor/inversion symmetry breaking topological material/superconductor junctions. We found surprisingly that, in topological materials with broken inversion symmetry, the magnitude of the critical Josephson currents $|I^{+}_c(B)|$ at fixed magnetic field $B$ is not the same for critical currents $|I^{-}_c(B)|$ flowing in the opposite direction. We report on short ballistic (SB) Josephson coupling in junctions embedded in a planar heterostructure of graphene. Ballistic Josephson coupling is confirmed by the Fabry-Perot-type interference of the junction critical current $I_c$. An exceptionally large $I_cR_N$ product close to $2\Delta_0/e$ ($R_N$; normal-state junction resistance, $\Delta_0$ ; zero-temperature superconducting energy gap) is an indication of SB strong Josephson coupling. $I_c$ shows a temperature dependence inconsistent with the conventional short-junction-like behavior; $I_c(T)$ curves deviate systematically from the standard Kulik-Omel'yanchuk prediction. We argue that this feature stems from the planar nature of graphene junction, which is susceptible to the effects of inhomogeneous carrier doping as well in graphene near the superconducting contacts., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

We report magnetotransport measurements on magnetically doped (Bi,Sb)$_2$Te$_3$ films grown by molecular beam epitaxy. In Hallbar devices, logarithmic dependence on temperature and bias voltage are obseved in both the longitudinal and anomalous Hall resistance. The interplay of disorder and electron-electron interactions is found to explain quantitatively the observed logarithmic singularities and is a dominant scattering mechanism in these samples. Submicron scale devices exhibit intriguing quantum oscillations at high magnetic fields with dependence on bias voltage. The ballistic motion of electrons in graphene encapsulated in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) promises exciting opportunities for electron-optics devices. A narrow electron beam is desired, with both the mean free path and coherence length exceeding the device size. One can form a collimating contact in graphene by adding zigzag contacts on either side of the electron emitter that absorb stray electrons to form a collimated electron beam [23]. Here we provide images of electron flow from a collimating contact that directly show the width and shape of the electron beam, obtained using a Scanning Gate Microscope (SGM) cooled to 4.2 K. The device is a hBN-encapsulated graphene hall bar with narrow side contacts on either side of the channel that have an electron emitter at the end and absorbing zig-zag contacts at both side. To form an image of electron flow, the SGM tip is raster scanned at a constant height above the sample surface while the transmission to a receiving contact on opposite sides of the channel is measured. By displaying the change {\Delta}T vs. tip position, an image of ballistic flow is obtained. The angular width of the electron beam leaving the collimating contact is found by applying a perpendicular magnetic field B that bends electron paths into cyclotron orbits. SGM images reveal that electron flow from a collimating contact disappears quickly at B = 0.05T while the flow from a non-collimating contact persists up to B = 0.19 T. Ray tracing simulations agree well with the experimental images over a range of B and electron density n. By fitting the half-width at half-max (HWHM) of the magnitude of electron flow in the experimental SGM images, we find a narrow half angular width {\Delta}{\theta} = 9.2{\deg} for the electron flow from the collimating contact, compared with a wide flow {\Delta}{\theta} = 54{\deg} from the non-collimating contact., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

This review discusses the electronic properties and the prospective research directions of superconductor-graphene heterostructures. The basic electronic properties of graphene are introduced to highlight the unique possibility of combining two seemingly unrelated physics, superconductivity and relativity. We then focus on graphene-based Josephson junctions, one of the most versatile superconducting quantum devices. The various theoretical methods that have been developed to describe graphene Josephson junctions are examined, together with their advantages and limitations, followed by a discussion on the advances in device fabrication and the relevant length scales. The phase-sensitive properties and phase-particle dynamics of graphene Josephson junctions are examined to provide an understanding of the underlying mechanisms of Josephson coupling via graphene. Thereafter, microscopic transport of correlated quasiparticles produced by Andreev reflections at superconducting interfaces and their phase-coherent behaviors are discussed. Quantum phase transitions studied with graphene as an electrostatically tunable two-dimensional platform are reviewed. The interplay between proximity-induced superconductivity and the quantum-Hall phase is discussed as a possible route to study topological superconductivity and non-Abelian physics. We propose to use graphene-based Josephson junctions (gJjs) to detect single photons in a wide electromagnetic spectrum from visible to radio frequencies. Our approach takes advantage of the exceptionally low electronic heat capacity of monolayer graphene and its constricted thermal conductance to its phonon degrees of freedom. Such a system could provide high sensitivity photon detection required for research areas including quantum information processing and radio-astronomy. As an example, we present our device concepts for gJj single photon detectors in both the microwave and infrared regimes. The quantum Hall (QH) effect supports a set of chiral edge states at the boundary of a 2-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) system. A superconductor (SC) contacting these states induces correlation of the quasi-particles in the dissipationless 1D chiral QH edge states. If the superconducting electrode is narrower than the superconducting coherence length, the incoming electron are correlated to outgoing hole along the chiral edge state by the Andreev process. In order to realize this crossed Andreev conversion (CAC), it is necessary to fabricate highly transparent and nanometer-scale superconducting junctions to QH system. Here we report the observation of CAC in a graphene QH system contacted with a nanostructured NbN superconducting electrode. The chemical potential of the edge states across the superconducting electrode exhibits a sign reversal, providing direct evidence of CAC. This hybrid SC/QH system is a novel route to create isolated non-Abelian anyonic zero modes, in resonance with the chiral QH edge., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

We use a cooled Scanning Probe Microscope (SPM) to electron motion in nanoscale devices. The charged tip of the SPM is raster scanned at a constant height above the surface as the conductance of the device is measured. The image charge scatters electrons away, changing the path of electrons through the sample.1-3 Using this technique, we have imaged cyclotron orbits3 for ballistic hBN-graphene-hBN devices that flow between two narrow contacts in the magnetic focusing regime. Here we present an analysis of our magnetic focusing imaging results based on the effects of the tip-created charge density dip on the motion of ballistic electrons. The density dip locally reduces the Fermi energy, creating a force that pushes electrons away from the tip. When the tip is above the cyclotron orbit, electrons are deflected away from the receiving contact, creating an image by reducing the transmission between contacts. The data and our analysis suggest that graphene edge is rather rough, and electrons scattering off the edge bounce in random directions. However, when the tip is close to the edge it can enhance transmission by bouncing electrons away from the edge, toward the receiving contact. The influence of static disorder on a quantum phase transition (QPT) is a fundamental issue in condensed matter physics. As a prototypical example of a disorder-tuned QPT, the superconductor-insulator transition (SIT) has been investigated intensively over the past three decades, but as yet without a general consensus on its nature. A key element is good control of disorder. Here, we present an experimental study of the SIT based on precise in-situ tuning of disorder in dual-gated bilayer graphene proximity-coupled to two superconducting electrodes through electrical and reversible control of the band gap and the charge carrier density. In the presence of a static disorder potential, Andreev-paired carriers formed close to the Fermi level in bilayer graphene constitute a randomly distributed network of proximity-induced superconducting puddles. The landscape of the network was easily tuned by electrical gating to induce percolative clusters at the onset of superconductivity. This is evidenced by scaling behavior consistent with the classical percolation in transport measurements. At lower temperatures, the solely electrical tuning of the disorder-induced landscape enables us to observe, for the first time, a crossover from classical to quantum percolation in a single device, which elucidates how thermal dephasing engages in separating the two regimes., Comment: 43 pages, 16 figures, submitted

Half a century ago, Veselago proposed left-handed materials with negative permittivity and permeability, in which waves propagate with phase and group velocities in opposite directions. Significant work has been undertaken to attain this left-handed response, such as establishing a negative refractive index in so-called metamaterials, which consist of periodic sub-wavelength structures. However, an electronic counterpart has not been demonstrated owing to difficulties in creating repeated structures smaller than the electronic Fermi wavelength (\lambda_F) of the order ~ 10 nm. Here, without needing to engineer sub-wavelength structures, we demonstrate negative refractive behaviour of Dirac fermions in graphene, exploiting its unique relativistic band structure. Analysis of both electron focusing through a n-p-n flat lens and negative refraction across n-p junctions confirms left-handed behaviour in the electronic system. This new approach to electronic optics is of particular relevance to the on-going efforts to develop novel quantum devices with emerging layered materials., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures
