In alkaline and neutral MEA CO2 electrolyzers, CO2 rapidly converts to (bi)carbonate, imposing a significant energy penalty arising from separating CO2 from the anode gas outlets. Here we report a CO2 electrolyzer uses a bipolar membrane (BPM) to convert (bi)carbonate back to CO2, preventing crossover; and that surpasses the single-pass utilization (SPU) limit (25% for multi-carbon products, C2+) suffered by previous neutral-media electrolyzers. We employ a stationary unbuffered catholyte layer between BPM and cathode to promote C2+ products while ensuring that (bi)carbonate is converted back, in situ, to CO2 near the cathode. We develop a model that enables the design of the catholyte layer, finding that limiting the diffusion path length of reverted CO2 to ~10 μm balances the CO2 diffusion flux with the regeneration rate. We report a single-pass CO2 utilization of 78%, which lowers the energy associated with downstream separation of CO2 by 10× compared with past systems.

Reactive capture of carbon dioxide (CO2) offers an electrified pathway to produce renewable carbon monoxide (CO), which can then be upgraded into long-chain hydrocarbons and fuels. Previous reactive capture systems relied on hydroxide- or amine-based capture solutions. However, selectivity for CO remains low (<50%) for hydroxide-based systems and conventional amines are prone to oxygen (O2) degradation. Here, we develop a reactive capture strategy using potassium glycinate (K-GLY), an amino acid salt (AAS) capture solution applicable to O2-rich CO2-lean conditions. By employing a single-atom catalyst, engineering the capture solution, and elevating the operating temperature and pressure, we increase the availability of dissolved in-situ CO2 and achieve CO production with 64% Faradaic efficiency (FE) at 50 mA cm−2. We report a measured CO energy efficiency (EE) of 31% and an energy intensity of 40 GJ tCO−1, exceeding the best hydroxide- and amine-based reactive capture reports. The feasibility of the full reactive capture process is demonstrated with both simulated flue gas and direct air input. The electrosynthesis of CO via integrated capture and conversion of dilute CO2 suffers from low energy efficiency. In this study, pure ZnO and Al-doped ZnO(AZO) thin films were coated onto a SiO2 wafer using the electrostatic spray deposition (ESD) process for acetone gas detection under laboratory conditions. Voltage levels were varied to determine the optimal conditions for producing thin films with the highest uniformity. The results indicate that the optimal coating voltage for achieving the highest uniformity of the coated films is 2.9 kV for ZnO and 2.6 kV for AZO. The thin films were produced under these optimal ESD conditions by adjusting the coating time, and gas sensors were fabricated by printing electrodes using a reverse offset process on top of the thin films. Analysis of the sensing response revealed that the AZO-coated gas sensor with a 200 s deposition exhibited the best acetone-sensing ability at 300 °C, with a maximum response of 13.41 at 10 ppm. Furthermore, the fabricated gas sensors effectively detected acetone gas even at a low concentration of 2 ppm, demonstrating high selectivity in comparison to other gases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abnormal metabolism is a hallmark of cancer cells. Accumulating evidence suggests that metabolic changes are likely to occur before other cellular responses in cancer cells upon drug treatment. Therefore, the metabolic activity or flux in cancer cells could be a potent biomarker for cancer detection and treatment monitoring. Magnetic resonance (MR)-based sensing technologies have been developed with hyperpolarized molecules for real-time flux analysis, but they still suffer from low sensitivity and throughput. To address this limitation, we have developed an innovative miniaturized MR coil, termed micro-slab MR coil, for simultaneous analysis of metabolic flux in multiple samples. Combining this approach with hyperpolarized probes, we were able to quantify the pyruvate-to-lactate flux in two different leukemic cell lines in a non-destructive manner, simultaneously. Further, we were able to rapidly assess flux changes with drug treatment in a single hyperpolarization experiment.
