The magnetization dynamics for ferrimagnets at the angular momentum compensation temperature T_A is believed to be analogous to that for antiferromagnets. We investigated the pulsed-laser-induced magnetization dynamics in amorphous rare-earth transition-metal ferrimagnet films with a T_A just above room temperature. For a low pulse fluence, the magnetization precession frequency decreases as the applied magnetic field increases, whereas for a higher pulse fluence, it increases as the applied field increases. The result was well explained by the left-handed and right-handed precession modes of the antiferromagnetic-like resonance at temperatures below and above T_A, respectively, and the data were in agreement with the theoretical simulation. We investigate the possibility of excitonic superfluidity in electron-hole bilayers. We calculate the phase diagram of the system for the whole range of electron-hole density imbalance and for different degrees of electrostatic screening, using mean-field theory and a Ginzburg-Landau expansion. We are able to resolve differences on previous work in the literature which concentrated on restricted regions of the parameter space. We also give detailed descriptions of the pairing wavefunction in the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov paired state. The Ginzburg-Landau treatment allows us to investigate the energy scales involved in the pairing state and discuss the possible spontaneous breaking of two-dimensional translation symmetry in the ground state., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

Density matrix quantum Monte Carlo (DMQMC) is used to sample exact-on-average $N$-body density matrices for uniform electron gas systems of up to 10$^{124}$ matrix elements via a stochastic solution of the Bloch equation. The results of these calculations resolve a current debate over the accuracy of the data used to parametrize finite-temperature density functionals. Exchange-correlation energies calculated using the real-space restricted path-integral formalism and the $k$-space configuration path-integral formalism disagree by up to $\sim$$10$\% at certain reduced temperatures $T/T_F \le 0.5$ and densities $r_s \le 1$. Our calculations confirm the accuracy of the configuration path-integral Monte Carlo results available at high density and bridge the gap to lower densities, providing trustworthy data in the regime typical of planetary interiors and solids subject to laser irradiation. The recently developed density matrix quantum Monte Carlo (DMQMC) algorithm stochastically samples the N -body thermal density matrix and hence provides access to exact properties of many-particle quantum systems at arbitrary temperatures. We demonstrate that moving to the interaction picture provides substantial benefits when applying DMQMC to interacting fermions. In this first study, we focus on a system of much recent interest: the uniform electron gas in the warm dense regime. The basis set incompleteness error at finite temperature is investigated and extrapolated via a simple Monte Carlo sampling procedure. We study the decoherence and thermalization dynamics of a nanoscale system coupled nonperturbatively to a fully quantum-mechanical bath. The system is prepared out of equilibrium in a pure state of the complete system. We propose a random matrix model and show analytically that there are two robust temporal regimes in the approach of the system to equilibrium --- an initial Gaussian decay followed by an exponential tail, consistent with numerical results on small interacting lattices [S. Genway, A.F. Ho and D.K.K. Lee, Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 260402 (2010)]. We present a study of thermalisation of a small isolated Hubbard lattice cluster prepared in a pure state with a well-defined energy. We examine how a two-site subsystem of the lattice thermalises with the rest of the system as its environment. We explore numerically the existence of thermalisation over a range of system parameters, such as the interaction strength, system size and the strength of the coupling between the subsystem and the rest of the lattice. We find thermalisation over a wide range of parameters and that interactions are crucial for efficient thermalisation of small systems. We relate this thermalisation behaviour to the eigenstate thermalisation hypothesis and quantify numerically the extent to which eigenstate thermalisation holds. We also verify our numerical results theoretically with the help of previously established results from random matrix theory for the local density of states, particularly the finite-size scaling for the onset of thermalisation., Comment: 22 pages, 23 figures

We discuss the diamagnetism induced in an isolated quantum Hall bilayer with total filling factor one by an in-plane magnetic field. This is a signature of counterflow superfluidity in these systems. We calculate magnetically induced currents in the presence of pinned vortices nucleated by charge disorder, and predict a history-dependent diamagnetism that could persist on laboratory timescales. For current samples we find that the maximum in-plane moment is small, but with stronger tunneling the moments would be measurable using torque magnetometry. We present a theory for the regime of coherent interlayer tunneling in a disordered quantum Hall bilayer at total filling factor one, allowing for the effect of static vortices. We find that the system consists of domains of polarized superfluid phase. Injected currents introduce phase slips between the polarized domains which are pinned by disorder. We present a model of saturated tunneling domains that predicts a critical current for the breakdown of coherent tunneling that is extensive in the system size. This theory is supported by numerical results from a disordered phase model in two dimensions. We study numerically the thermalisation and temporal evolution of the reduced density matrix for a two-site subsystem of a fermionic Hubbard model prepared far from equilibrium at a definite energy. Even for very small systems near quantum degeneracy, the subsystem can reach a steady state resembling equilibrium. This occurs for a non-perturbative coupling between the subsystem and the rest of the lattice where relaxation to equilibrium is Gaussian in time, in sharp contrast to perturbative results. We find similar results for random couplings, suggesting such behaviour is generic for small systems., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

We present a theory of the critical interlayer tunneling current in a disordered quantum Hall bilayer at total filling factor one, allowing for the effect of static vortices. In agreement with recent experiments [Phys. Rev. B 80, 165120 (2009); ibid. 78, 075302 (2008)], we find that this critical current is proportional to the area of the sample and is comparable in magnitude to observed values. This reflects the formation of a Bean critical state as a result of current injection at the boundary. We predict a crossover to a critical current proportional to the square-root of area as either sample size or electron density decreases. We study the transport properties of the quantum Hall bilayers systems looking closely at the effect that disorder and electron-phonon interaction have on the interlayer tunnelling current in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field $B_\parallel$. We find that it is important to take into account the effect of disorder and electron-phonon interactions in order to predict a finite current at a finite voltage when an in-plane magnetic field is present. We find a broadened resonant feature in the tunnelling current as a function of bias voltage, in qualitative agreement with experiments. We also find the broadening of this resonant feature due to electron-phonon coupling has a non-monotonic dependence on $B_\parallel$, related to the geometry of the double quantum well. We also compare this with the broadening effect due to spatial fluctuations of the tunnelling amplitude. We conclude that such static disorder provides only very weak broadening of the resonant feature in the experimental range., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

We study the Bose-condensed ground states of bosons in a two-dimensional optical lattice in the presence of frustration due to an effective vector potential, for example, due to lattice rotation. We use a mapping to a large-S frustrated magnet to study quantum fluctuations in the condensed state. Quantum effects are introduced by considering a 1/S expansion around the classical ground state. The large-S regime should be relevant to systems with many particles per site. As the system approaches the Mott insulating state, the hole density becomes small. Our large-S results show that, even when the system is very dilute, the holes remain a (partially) condensed system. Moreover, the superfluid density is comparable to the condensate density. In other words, the large-S regime does not display an instability to noncondensed phases. However, for cases with fewer than 1/3 flux quantum per lattice plaquette, we find that the fractional condensate depletion increases as the system approaches the Mott phase, giving rise to the possibility of a noncondensed state before the Mott phase is reached for systems with smaller S., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures

We study the weak-tunnelling limit for a system of cold 40K atoms trapped in a one-dimensional optical lattice close to an s-wave Feshbach resonance. We calculate the local spectrum for three atoms at one site of the lattice within a two-channel model. Our results indicate that, for this one-dimensional system, one- and two-channel models will differ close to the Feshbach resonance, although the two theories would converge in the limit of strong Feshbach coupling. We also find level crossings in the low-energy spectrum of a single well with three atoms that may lead to quantum phase transition for an optical lattice of many wells. We present and solve a model for the vortex configuration of a disordered quantum Hall bilayer in the limit of strong and smooth disorder. We argue that there is a characteristic disorder strength below which vortices will be rare, and above which they proliferate. We predict that this can be observed tuning the electron density in a given sample. The ground state in the strong-disorder regime can be understood as an emulsion of vortex-antivortex crystals. Its signatures include a suppression of the spatial decay of counterflow currents. We find an increase of at least an order of magnitude in the length scale for this decay compared to a clean system. This provides a possible explanation of the apparent absence of leakage of counterflow currents through interlayer tunneling, even in experiments performed deep in the coherent phase where enhanced interlayer tunneling is observed., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. v2 slightly extended to emphasize new length scale

We study quantum Hall ferromagnets in the presence of a random electrostatic impurity potential, within the framework of a classical non-linear sigma model. We discuss the behaviour of the system using a heuristic picture for the competition between exchange and screening, and test our conclusions with extensive numerical simulations. We obtain a phase diagram for the system as a function of disorder strength and deviation of the average Landau level filling factor from unity. Screening of an impurity potential requires distortions of the spin configuration. In the absence of Zeeman coupling there is a disorder-driven, zero-temperature phase transition from a ferromagnet at weak disorder and small deviation from integer filling to a spin glass at stronger disorder or large charge deviation. We study quantum Hall ferromagnets in the presence of a random electrostatic impurity potential. Describing these systems with a classical non-linear sigma model and using analytical estimates supported by results from numerical simulations, we examine the nature of the ground state as a function of disorder strength, $\Delta$, and deviation, $\delta \nu$, of the average Landau level filling factor from unity. Screening of an impurity potential requires distortions of the spin configuration, and in the absence of Zeeman coupling there is a disorder-driven, zero-temperature phase transition from a ferromagnet at small $\Delta$ and $|\delta \nu|$ to a spin glass at larger $\Delta$ or $|\delta \nu|$. A single model is presented which represents both of the two apparently unrelated localisation problems of the title. The phase diagram of this model is examined using scaling ideas and numerical simulations.
