Although the presence of rotaviruses in pigeon samples has been reported since the 1980s, its importance as an aetiological agent of the “classical” young pigeon disease (YPD) was not proven until 2020, when the Henle–Koch postulates were confirmed for pigeon-type rotavirus A (RVA) genotype G18P(17).

Mycobacteriosis is a significant disease of companion and wild birds which causes emaciation and widely distributed lesions, as well as being a potential zoonosis. Its primary aetiological agents in birds are Mycobacterium avium subsp. avium and the fastidious Mycobacterium genavense. This study monitored the therapy of birds naturally infected with Mycobacterium genavense to gain understanding of its effectiveness and the interrelation of co-infections with the disease course and pharmacotherapy.

Abstract Background To date, Campylobacter jejuni has not been found to be pathogenic to peafowl. The available publications show that out of a total of 44 samples tested from peafowl, this bacterium was isolated only in two cases. Eimeria pavonina infestations in the peafowl have been described, but no fatal cases have been reported yet. Case presentation The four-year-old peacock was presented with chronic diarrhea, emaciation and weakness. Post mortem examination revealed enlarged and pale kidneys, small intestinal mucosal necrosis and thickening of intestinal wall, and pericardial effusion. The histopathological examination revealed necrotic enteritis with marked mononuclear cells infiltration associated with the presence of coccidia, additionally there was histological evidence of septicemia in liver and kidneys. Bacteria identification was based on light microscopy of the small intestine sample, culture, and biochemical tests. Further identification was based on PCR. Antimicrobial susceptibility profile was created by determination of minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values for 6 antimicrobial agents from 5 different classes. PCR assays were performed to detect virulence factors genes responsible for motility, cytolethal distending toxin production, adhesion and internalization. Bacteriology of the small intestine sample showed abundant growth almost exclusively of Campylobacter jejuni, resistant to ciprofloxacin, gentamycin and ampicillin. Bacteria was sensitive to Amoxicillin + clavulanic acid, tetracycline, and erythromycin. All tested virulence factors genes have been detected. The parasitological examination was performed by microscopic examination of fresh faeces and intestinal content, and revealed the moderate number of Eimeria pavonina, Histomonas meleagridis, single Capillaria spp. eggs as well Heterakis spp. like parasites. Conclusion The above case shows that a virulent isolate of Campylobacter jejuni in combination with a parasitic invasion may cause chronic enteritis in peafowl, which most likely led to extreme exhaustion of the host organism and death.

Purpose: Age‐related macular degeneration (AMD) is a complex eye disorder affecting millions worldwide. This article uses deep learning techniques to investigate the relationship between AMD, genetics and optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans. Methods: The cohort consisted of 332 patients, of which 235 were diagnosed with AMD and 97 were controls with no signs of AMD. The genome‐wide association studies summary statistics utilized to establish the polygenic risk score (PRS) in relation to AMD were derived from the GERA European study. A PRS estimation based on OCT volumes for both eyes was performed using a proprietary convolutional neural network (CNN) model supported by machine learning models. The method's performance was assessed using numerical evaluation metrics, and the Grad‐CAM technique was used to evaluate the results by visualizing the features learned by the model. Results: The best results were obtained with the CNN and the Extra Tree regressor (MAE = 0.55, MSE = 0.49, RMSE = 0.70, R2 = 0.34). Extending the feature vector with additional information on AMD diagnosis, age and smoking history improved the results slightly, with mainly AMD diagnosis used by the model (MAE = 0.54, MSE = 0.44, RMSE = 0.66, R2 = 0.42). Grad‐CAM heatmap evaluation showed that the model decisions rely on retinal morphology factors relevant to AMD diagnosis. Conclusion: The developed method allows an efficient PRS estimation from OCT images. A new technique for analysing the association of OCT images with PRS of AMD, using a deep learning approach, may provide an opportunity to discover new associations between genotype‐based AMD risk and retinal morphology. Activity and physical effort positively affect a person's psychophysical state and emotional experience. Interest in the phenomenon of flow, the state of perceived arousal, stems from its relationship to an individual's intrinsic motivation. Flow is an area of research in many fields, including sports. Nowadays, solutions are being sought to support the traditional assessment of cognitive and affective states using analysis of physiological signals. Therefore, the present study analysed and estimated the physiological responses that may occur during the induction of a flow state between exercises stimulated by additional metrorhythmic stimuli. Thirty-six healthy subjects participated in the study. The effects of various metrorhythmic stimuli on the body's physiological response during the subjects' free gait were examined. The physiological response and flow intensity were evaluated when the rate of individual stimuli was changed, and the rate was enforced. Several statistically significant variables and correlations were determined for physiological indicators depending on the stage of the study conducted and the level of flow experienced. A positive, statistically significant correlation of flow and HRV frequency variables was obtained. The results also confirm previous literature reports on the relationship between flow response and frequency heart rate variability during physical activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Peptides conjugated with organic molecules can be useful tools for the development of novel bioactive compounds. The lysine side‐chain is an interesting functional group to act as a linker to connect small molecules in peptide conjugates. Herein we present the design and synthesis of four Safirinium derivatives, their facile conjugation to lysine in solid phase, and incorporation in peptides. The compounds differing in the functionalization of nitrogen N2 of the condensed triazolyl moiety are novel building blocks to design conjugates to perform structure‐activity relationship studies of elastase inhibitors. Consequently, structural investigations of the lysine building blocks and of the corresponding peptide conjugates were performed. The efficient conversion of tissues into reproductive success is a crucial aspect affecting the evolution of life histories. Masting, the interannually variable and synchronous seed production in perennial plants, is a strategy that can enhance reproductive efficiency by mitigating seed predation and pollen limitation. However, evaluating benefits is insufficient to establish whether efficiency has improved, as such assessments neglect the associated costs of masting, particularly during the critical seed‐to‐seedling stage. We conducted a parentage analysis of seedlings and adults in a population of 209 Sorbus aucuparia trees, monitored over 23 years, providing pioneering documentation of the effects of masting on the fitness of individual trees beyond the seed stage. Our results show high costs of interannual variation that can be mitigated by high synchrony and reveal the existence of phenotypes that appear to reap the benefits of masting while avoiding its costs through regular reproduction. Background: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a complex eye disorder with an environmental and genetic origin, affecting millions worldwide. The study aims to explore the association between retinal morphology and the polygenic risk score (PRS) for AMD using fundus images and deep learning techniques. Methods: The study used and pre-processed 23,654 fundus images from 332 subjects (235 patients with AMD and 97 controls), ultimately selecting 558 high-quality images for analysis. The fine-tuned DenseNet121 deep learning model was employed to estimate PRS from single fundus images. After training, deep features were extracted, fused, and used in machine learning regression models to estimate PRS for each subject. The Grad-CAM technique was applied to examine the relationship between areas of increased model activity and the retina's morphological features specific to AMD. Results: Using the hybrid approach improved the results obtained by DenseNet121 in 5-fold cross-validation. The final evaluation metrics for all predictions from the best model from each fold are MAE = 0.74, MSE = 0.85, RMSE = 0.92, R2 = 0.18, MAPE = 2.41. Grad-CAM heatmap evaluation showed that the model decisions rely on lesion area, focusing mostly on the presence of drusen. The proposed approach was also shown to be sensitive to artifacts present in the image. Conclusions: The findings indicate an association between fundus images and AMD PRS, suggesting that deep learning models may effectively estimate genetic risk for AMD from retinal images, potentially aiding in early detection and personalized treatment strategies. The study aimed to estimate the prevalence of skin problems in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D) using insulin pumps (IPs) and/or continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) in our center and analyze their association with various factors. As part of the international ISPAD JENIOUS-initiated SKIN-PEDIC project, we interviewed and examined patients who visited the regional pediatric diabetes center in Opole (Poland) for four weeks regarding the use of IP and/or CGM and the presence of skin problems. Body mass index (BMI) and glycemic parameters were obtained retrospectively from medical records. Among 115 individuals (45.2% girls, 83.5% IP users, 96.5% CGM users), old scars were the most common skin problem (IP users 53.1%; CGM users 66.4%), while ≥2 types of skin problems co-occurred (IP users 40.6%; CGM users 27.3%). Longer IP use was associated with a higher prevalence of skin problems (50% for IP < 1 year, 98.1%-IP 1–3 years, 100% for IP > 3 years; p < 0.001), pointing out extra attention with IP use > 1 year. No significant associations were found between skin problems and gender, age, BMI centile and glycemic parameters. Dermatological complications were common among children using IP and CGM in our center, highlighting the need for vigilant monitoring and early intervention to manage these skin-related issues effectively.
