The interstellar medium (ISM) is a fundamental component of the Milky Way. Studying its chemical composition and the level of its chemical diversity gives us insight into the evolution of the Milky Way and the role of gas in the Galactic environment. In this paper, we use a novel simulation technique to model the distribution of total hydrogen between gas components, and therefore derive new constraints on the dust depletion and metallicity. We study individual gas components along the lines of sight towards eight bright O/B stars within 1.1 kpc of the Sun using high-resolution HST/STIS absorption spectra (R sim 114 000). We measure the level of dust depletion for these individual components and find components with higher levels of dust depletion compared to Milky Way sightlines in the literature. We find large ranges in the level of dust depletion among components along lines of sight, up to 1.19 dex. Although it is not possible to directly measure the metallicity of individual components due to the saturated and damped Ly-alpha line, we investigate possible metallicity ranges for individual gas components by exploring many different distributions of the total hydrogen gas between components. We select possible combinations of these gas fractions which produce the minimum metallicity difference between components, and for these cases we determine individual metallicities to accuracies that range between sim 0.1 to 0.4 dex. HI-rich absorbers seen within quasar spectra contain the bulk of neutral gas in the Universe. However, the spatial extent of these reservoirs are not extensively studied due to the pencil beam nature of quasar sightlines. Using two giant gravitational arc fields (at redshifts 1.17 and 2.06) as 2D background sources with known strong MgII absorption observed with the MUSE integral field spectrograph (IFS), we investigated whether spatially mapped MgII absorption can predict the presence of strong HI systems, and determine both the physical extent and HI mass of the two absorbing systems. We created a simple model of an ensemble of gas clouds in order to simultaneously predict the HI column density and gas covering fraction of HI-rich absorbers based on observations of the MgII rest-frame equivalent width in IFS spaxels. We first test the model on the field with HI observations already available from the literature, finding that we can recover HI column densities consistent with the previous estimates (although with large uncertainties). We then use our framework to simultaneously predict the gas covering fraction, HI column density and total HI mass ($M_{\rm{HI}}$) for both fields. We find that both of the observed strong systems have a covering fraction of $\approx70$% and are likely damped Lyman $\alpha$ systems (DLAs) with $M_{\rm{HI}}>10^9\ M_{\odot}$. Our model shows that the typical MgII metrics used in the literature to identify the presence of DLAs are sensitive to the gas covering fraction. However, these MgII metrics are still sensitive to strong HI, and can be still applied to absorbers towards gravitational arcs or other spatially extended background sources. Based on our results, we speculate that the two strong absorbers are likely representative of a neutral inner circumgalactic medium and are a significant reservoir of fuel for star formation within the host galaxies., Comment: 15 pages, 6 Figures, 3 appendices. We study the properties of long gamma-ray burst (GRB) host galaxies using a statistical modelling framework derived to model damped Lyman-$\alpha$ absorbers (DLAs) in quasar spectra at high redshift. The distribution of NHI for GRB-DLAs is $\sim$10 times higher than what is found for quasar-DLAs at similar impact parameters. We interpret this as a temporal selection effect due to the short-lived GRB progenitor probing its host at the onset of a starburst where the interstellar medium may exhibit multiple overdense regions. Owing to the larger NHI, the dust extinction is larger with 29 per cent of GRB-DLAs exhibiting A(V)>1 mag in agreement with the fraction of 'dark bursts'. Despite the differences in NHI distributions, we find that high-redshift 2 < z < 3 quasar- and GRB-DLAs trace the luminosity function of star-forming host galaxies in the same way. We propose that their differences may arise from the fact that the galaxies are sampled at different times in their star formation histories, and that the absorption sightlines probe the galaxy haloes differently. Quasar-DLAs sample the full H I cross-section, whereas GRB-DLAs sample only regions hosting cold neutral medium. Previous studies have found that GRBs avoid high-metallicity galaxies ($\sim$0.5 $Z_{\odot}$). Since at these redshifts galaxies on average have lower metallicities, our sample is only weakly sensitive to such a threshold. Lastly, we find that the modest detection rate of cold gas (H$_2$ or C I) in GRB spectra can be explained mainly by a low volume filling factor of cold gas clouds and to a lesser degree by destruction from the GRB explosion itself., Comment: 13 pages, accepted for publication by MNRAS

We present a novel method to characterize dust depletion, namely, the depletion of metals into dust grains. We used observed correlations among relative abundances combining a total of 17 metals in diverse galactic environments, including the Milky Way (MW), Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), and damped Lyman-$\alpha$ absorbers (DLAs) towards quasars and gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). We only considered the relative abundances of metals that qualify as tracers of dust and we used all available dust tracers. We find linear correlations among all studied dust tracers in a multidimensional space, where each dimension corresponds to an individual dust tracer. The fit to the linear correlations among the dust tracers describes the tendencies of different elements when depleting into dust grains. We determined the overall strength of dust depletion, $\Delta$, along individual lines of sight, based on the correlations among different dust tracers. We avoided any preference for specific dust tracers or any other assumptions by including all available dust tracers in this multidimensional space. We also determined the dust depletion of Kr, C, O, Cl, P, Zn, Ge, Mg, Cu, Si, Fe, Ni, and Ti. Finally, we offer simple guidelines for the application of the method to the study of the observed patterns of abundances and relative abundances. This has allowed for a straightforward determination of the overall strength of depletion and the dust depletion of individual elements. We also obtained an estimate for the gas-phase metallicity and identified any additional deviations due to the nucleosynthesis of specific stellar populations. Thus, we have established a unified methodology for characterizing dust depletion across cosmic time and diverse galactic environments, offering a valuable new approach to the study of dust depletion in studies of the chemical evolution of galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We present VLT/MUSE integral-field spectroscopy ($R\approx 1\,800$) of four giant gravitational arcs exhibiting strong C IV absorption at 8 intervening redshifts, $z_{abs}\approx 2.0$--$2.5$. We detect C IV absorption in a total of 222 adjacent and seeing-uncorrelated sightlines, whose spectra sample beams of ("de-lensed") linear size $\approx 1$ kpc. Our data show that (1) absorption velocities cluster at all probed transverse scales, $\Delta r_\perp\approx0$--$15$ kpc, depending on system; (2) the (transverse) velocity dispersion never exceeds the mean (line-of-sight) absorption spread; and (3) the (transverse) velocity autocorrelation function does not resolve kinematic patterns at the above spatial scales, but its velocity projection, $\xi^{arc}(\Delta v)$, exhibits a similar shape to the known two-point correlation function toward quasars, $\xi^{QSO}(\Delta v)$. An empirical kinematic model suggests that these results are a natural consequence of wide-beam observations of an unresolved clumpy medium. Our model recovers both the underlying velocity dispersion of the clumps ($70$--$170$ \kms) and the mean number of clumps per unit area ($2$--$13$ kpc$^{-2}$). The latter constrains the projected mean inter-clump distance to within $\approx0.3$--$0.8$ kpc, which we argue is a measure of clump size for near-unity covering fraction. The model is also able to predict $\xi^{arc}(\Delta v)$ from $\xi^{QSO}(\Delta v)$, suggesting that the strong systems that shape the former and the line-of-sight velocity components that define the latter trace the same kinematic population. Consequently, the clumps must possess an internal density structure that generates both weak and strong components. This study aims to investigate the molecular gas content of strongly magnified low-mass star-forming galaxies around the cosmic noon period ($z\sim2$) through observations of CO emission lines and dust continuum emission, both of which serve as tracers for molecular gas. We observed twelve strongly lensed galaxies with the Atacama Compact Array to detect CO mid-j rotational transitions and dust continuum. Thanks to the strong lensing, we were able to probe the low-mass regime, previously understudied. With a compiled set of observations, we recalibrate empirical relations between star formation rate density and the CO line ratios. Using SED fitting, we derived galaxy properties and performed galaxy stacking to combine the faint signals. In all cases, molecular gas masses were estimated using both tracers. We detected CO emission in three out of 12 galaxies and dust continuum emission in three of them. The obtained molecular gas masses indicate that most of these galaxies ($\rm{M}_* < 10^{10.7}$ $\rm{M}_\odot$) have lower molecular gas fractions and shorter depletion times compared to the expectations from established scaling relations at these redshifts. Several possible explanations for this gas deficit were explored, including uncertainties in mass estimates, effects of low metallicity environments, larger atomic gas reservoirs in low-mass systems, and the possibility that these represent low-mass analogs of "main sequence starburst" galaxies, which are undergoing sustained star formation due to gas compaction despite low overall gas fractions. We conclude that there is a molecular gas deficit at these mass and metallicity regimes. Our results suggest that this deficit is likely due to a significant amount of atomic gas, which our stacking indicates is about 91% of the total gas. However, this estimation might be an upper limit in the case of our galaxies containing CO-dark gas.

We present a versatile open-source framework designed to facilitate efficient, numerically-tailored Matrix-Matrix Multiplications (MMMs). The framework offers two primary contributions: first, a fine-tuned, automated pipeline for arithmetic datapath generation, enabling highly customizable systolic MMM kernels; second, seamless integration of the generated kernels into user code, irrespective of the programming language employed, without necessitating modifications. The framework demonstrates a systematic enhancement in accuracy per energy cost across diverse High Performance Computing (HPC) workloads displaying a variety of numerical requirements, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) inference and Sea Surface Height (SSH) computation. For AI inference, we consider a set of state-of-the-art neural network models, namely ResNet18, ResNet34, ResNet50, DenseNet121, DenseNet161, DenseNet169, and VGG11, in conjunction with two datasets, two computer formats, and 27 distinct intermediate arithmetic datapaths. Our approach consistently reduces energy consumption across all cases, with a notable example being the reduction by factors of $3.3\times$ for IEEE754-32 and $1.4\times$ for Bfloat16 during ImageNet inference with ResNet50. This is accomplished while maintaining accuracies of $82.3\%$ and $86\%$, comparable to those achieved with conventional Floating-Point Units (FPUs). In the context of SSH computation, our method achieves fully-reproducible results using double-precision words, surpassing the accuracy of conventional double- and quad-precision arithmetic in FPUs. Our approach enhances SSH computation accuracy by a minimum of $5\times$ and $27\times$ compared to IEEE754-64 and IEEE754-128, respectively, resulting in $5.6\times$ and $15.1\times$ improvements in accuracy per power cost., Comment: 6 pages, open-source

We introduce CityJSON Text Sequences (CityJSONSeq in short), a format based on JSON Text Sequences and CityJSON. CityJSONSeq was added to the CityJSON version 2.0 standard to allow us to stream very large 3D city models. The main idea is to decompose a CityJSON dataset into its individual city objects (each building, each tree, etc.) and create several independent JSON objects of a newly defined type: 'CityJSONFeature'. We elaborate on the engineering decisions that were taken to develop CityJSONSeq, we present the open-source software we have developed to convert to and from CityJSONSeq, and we discuss different aspects of the new format, eg filesize, usability, memory footprint, etc. For several use-cases, we consider CityJSONSeq to be a better format than CityJSON because: (1) once serialised it is about 10% more compact; (2) it takes an order of magnitude less time to process; and (3) it uses significantly less memory., Comment: Presented at the 3DGeoInfo 2024 conference: https://3dgeoinfoeg-ice.webs.uvigo.es/

This paper presents a new algorithm for filling holes in Level of Detail 2 (LoD2) building mesh models, addressing the challenges posed by geometric inaccuracies and topological errors. Unlike traditional methods that often alter the original geometric structure or impose stringent input requirements, our approach preserves the integrity of the original model while effectively managing a range of topological errors. The algorithm operates in three distinct phases: (1) pre-processing, which addresses topological errors and identifies pseudo-holes; (2) detecting and extracting complete border rings of holes; and (3) remeshing, aimed at reconstructing the complete geometric surface. Our method demonstrates superior performance compared to related work in filling holes in building mesh models, achieving both uniform local geometry around the holes and structural completeness. Comparative experiments with established methods demonstrate our algorithm's effectiveness in delivering more complete and geometrically consistent hole-filling results, albeit with a slight trade-off in efficiency. The paper also identifies challenges in handling certain complex scenarios and outlines future directions for research, including the pursuit of a comprehensive repair goal for LoD2 models to achieve watertight 2-manifold models with correctly oriented normals. The detection of low-mass planets orbiting the nearest stars is a central stake of exoplanetary science, as they can be directly characterized much more easily than their distant counterparts. Here, we present the results of our long-term astrometric observations of the nearest binary M-dwarf Gliese 65 AB (GJ65), located at a distance of only 2.67 pc. We monitored the relative astrometry of the two components from 2016 to 2023 with the VLTI/GRAVITY interferometric instrument. We derived highly accurate orbital parameters for the stellar system, along with the dynamical masses of the two red dwarfs. The GRAVITY measurements exhibit a mean accuracy per epoch of 50-60 microarcseconds in 1.5h of observing time using the 1.8m Auxiliary Telescopes. The residuals of the two-body orbital fit enable us to search for the presence of companions orbiting one of the two stars (S-type orbit) through the reflex motion they imprint on the differential A-B astrometry. We detected a Neptune-mass candidate companion with an orbital period of p = 156 +/- 1 d and a mass of m = 36 +/- 7 Mearth. The best-fit orbit is within the dynamical stability region of the stellar pair. It has a low eccentricity, e = 0.1 - 0.3, and the planetary orbit plane has a moderate-to-high inclination of i > 30{\deg} with respect to the stellar pair, with further observations required to confirm these values. These observations demonstrate the capability of interferometric astrometry to reach microarcsecond accuracy in the narrow-angle regime for planet detection by reflex motion from the ground. The chemical evolution of distant galaxies cannot be assessed from observations of individual stars, in contrast to the case of nearby galaxies. On the other hand, the study of the interstellar medium (ISM) offers an alternative way to reveal important properties of the chemical evolution of distant galaxies. The chemical enrichment of the ISM is produced by all the previous generations of stars and it is possible to precisely determine the metal abundances in the neutral ISM in galaxies. The chemical abundance patterns in the neutral ISM are determined by the gas metallicity, presence of dust (the depletion of metals into dust grains), and possible deviations due to specific nucleosynthesis, for example, $\alpha$-element enhancements. We aim to derive the metallicities, dust depletion, and $\alpha$-element enhancements in the neutral ISM of gas-rich mostly-metal-poor distant galaxies (Damped Lyman-$\alpha$ absorbers, DLAs). Furthermore, we aim to constrain the distribution of $\alpha$-element enhancements with metallicity in these galaxies. We have constrained, for the first time, the distribution of the $\alpha$-element enhancement with metallicity in the neutral ISM in distant galaxies. Less massive galaxies show an $\alpha$-element knee at lower metallicities than more massive galaxies. This can be explained by a lower star formation rate in less massive galaxies. If this collective behaviour can be interpreted in the same way as it is for individual systems, this would suggest that more massive and metal-rich systems evolve to higher metallicities before the contribution of SN-Ia to [$\alpha$/Fe] levels out that of core-collapse SNe. This finding may plausibly be supported by different SFRs in galaxies of different masses. Computational analysis with the finite element method requires geometrically accurate meshes. It is well known that high-order meshes can accurately capture curved surfaces with fewer degrees of freedom in comparison to low-order meshes. Existing techniques for high-order mesh generation typically output meshes with same polynomial order for all elements. However, high order elements away from curvilinear boundaries or interfaces increase the computational cost of the simulation without increasing geometric accuracy. In prior work, we have presented one such approach for generating body-fitted uniform-order meshes that takes a given mesh and morphs it to align with the surface of interest prescribed as the zero isocontour of a level-set function. We extend this method to generate mixed-order meshes such that curved surfaces of the domain are discretized with high-order elements, while low-order elements are used elsewhere. Numerical experiments demonstrate the robustness of the approach and show that it can be used to generate mixed-order meshes that are much more efficient than high uniform-order meshes. The proposed approach is purely algebraic, and extends to different types of elements (quadrilaterals/triangles/tetrahedron/hexahedra) in two- and three-dimensions., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures

The theory of Big Bang nucleosynthesis, coupled with an estimate of the primordial deuterium abundance (D/H)_pr, offers insights into the baryon density of the Universe. Independently, the baryon density can be constrained during a different cosmological era through the analysis of cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy. The comparison of these estimates serves as a rigorous test for the self-consistency of the Standard Cosmological Model and stands as a potent tool in the quest for new physics beyond the Standard Model of Particle Physics. For a meaningful comparison, a clear understanding of the various systematic errors affecting deuterium measurements is crucial. Given the limited number of D/H measurements, each new estimate carries significant weight. This study presents the detection of DI absorption lines in a metal-poor sub-Damped Lyman-alpha system ([O/H]=-1.71+-0.02, logN(HI)=19.304+-0.004) at z_abs=3.42 towards the quasar J1332+0052. Through simultaneous fitting of HI and DI Lyman-series lines, as well as low-ionization metal lines, observed at high spectral resolution and high signal-to-noise using VLT/UVES and Keck/HIRES, we derive log(DI/HI)=-4.622+-0.014, accounting for statistical and systematic uncertainties of 0.008dex and 0.012dex, respectively. Thanks to negligible ionization corrections and minimal deuterium astration at low metallicity, this D/H ratio provides a robust measurement of the primordial deuterium abundance, consistent and competitive with previous works. Incorporating all prior measurements, the best estimate of the primordial deuterium abundance is constrained as: (D/H)_pr=(2.533+-0.024)*10^-5. This represents a 5% improvement in precision over previous studies and reveals a moderate tension with the expectation from the Standard Model (~2.2sig). Heat transfer at the interface between two materials is becoming increasingly important as the size of electronic devices shrinks. Most studies concentrate on the interfacial thermal conductance between either crystalline-crystalline or amorphous-amorphous materials. Here, we investigate the interfacial thermal conductance at crystalline-amorphous interfaces using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. Specifically, gold and two different materials, silicon and silica, in both their crystalline and amorphous structures, have been considered. The findings reveal that the interfacial thermal conductance between amorphous structures and gold is significantly higher as compared to crystalline structures for both planar and rough interfaces ($\approx$ 152 MW/(m$^2$K) for gold-amorphous silicon and $\approx$ 56 MW/(m$^2$K) for gold-crystalline silicon). We explain this increase by two factors~:~the relative commensurability between amorphous silicon/silica and gold leads to enhanced bonding and cross-correlations of atomic displacements at the interface, contributing to enhance phonon elastic transmission. Inelastic phonon transmission is also enhanced due to the relative larger degree of anharmonicity characterizing gold-amorphous silicon/silica. We also show that all the vibrational modes that participate to interfacial heat transfer are delocalized and use the Ioffe-Regel (IR) criterion to separate the contributions of propagating~(propagons) and non-propagating modes~(diffusons). In particular, we demonstrate that, while at gold-amorphous silicon interfaces elastic phonon scattering involves propagons and inelastic phonon scattering involves a mixture of propagons and diffusons, in gold-amorphous silica, all modes transmitting energy at the interface are diffusons.

One of the biggest puzzles regarding the circumgalactic medium (CGM) is the structure of its cool ($T\sim10^4$ K) gas phase. While the kinematics of quasar absorption systems suggests the CGM is composed of a population of different clouds, constraining the clouds' extent and spatial distribution has proven challenging, both from the theoretical and observational points of view. In this work we study the spatial structure of the $z\sim 1$ CGM with unprecedented detail via resolved spectroscopy of giant gravitational arcs. We put together a sample of Mg II$\lambda\lambda 2796,2803$ detections obtained with VLT/MUSE in 91 spatially independent and contiguous sight-lines toward 3 arcs, each probing an isolated star-forming galaxy believed to be detected in absorption. We constrain the coherence scale of this gas ($C_{\rm{length}}$), which represents the spatial scale over which the Mg II equivalent width (EW) remains constant, by comparing EW variations measured across all sight-lines with empirical models. The evolution of the cosmic dust content and the cycle between metals and dust in the interstellar medium (ISM) play a fundamental role in galaxy evolution. The chemical enrichment of the Universe can be traced through the evolution of the dust-to-metals ratio (DTM) and the dust-to-gas ratio (DTG) with metallicity. We use a novel method to determine mass estimates of the DTM, DTG and dust composition based on our previous measurements of the depletion of metals in different environments (the Milky Way, the Magellanic Clouds, and damped Lyman-$\alpha$ absorbers, DLAs, toward quasars and towards gamma-ray bursts, GRBs), which were calculated from the relative abundances of metals in the ISM through absorption-line spectroscopy column densities observed mainly from VLT/UVES and X-shooter, and HST/STIS. We derive the dust extinction from the estimated dust depletion ($A_{V, \rm depl}$) and compare with the $A_{V}$ from extinction. We find that the DTM and DTG ratios increase with metallicity and with the dust tracer [Zn/Fe]. This suggests that grain growth in the ISM is a dominant process of dust production. The increasing trend of the DTM and DTG with metallicity is in good agreement with a dust production and evolution model. Our data suggest that the stellar dust yield is much lower than the metal yield and thus that the overall amount of dust in the warm neutral medium that is produced by stars is much lower. We find that $A_{V,\rm depl}$ is overall lower than $A_{V, \rm ext}$ for the Milky Way and a few Magellanic Clouds lines of sight, a discrepancy that is likely related to the presence of carbonaceous dust. We show that the main elements that contribute to the dust composition are, O, Fe, Si, Mg, C, S, Ni and Al for all the environments. Neutron dark decays have been suggested as a solution to the discrepancy between bottle and beam experiments, providing a dark matter candidate that can be searched for in halo nuclei. The free neutron in the final state following the decay of $^6$He into $^4$He $+$ $n$ + $\chi$ provides an exceptionally clean detection signature when combined with a high efficiency neutron detector. Using a high-intensity $^6$He$^+$ beam at GANIL, a search for a coincident neutron signal resulted in an upper limit on a dark decay branching ratio of Br$_\chi \leq 4.0\times10^{-10}$ (95\% C.L.). Using the dark neutron decay model proposed originally by Fornal and Grinstein, we translate this into an upper bound on a dark neutron branching ratio of $\mathcal{O}(10^{-5})$, improving over global constraints by one to several orders of magnitude depending on $m_\chi$.

We report on further observations of the field of the quasar Q1218+0832. Geier et al. 2019 presented the discovery of the quasar resulting from a search for quasars reddened and dimmed by dust in foreground damped Lyman-alpha absorbers (DLAs). The DLA is remarkable by having a very large HI column density close to 10^22 cm^-2 . Its dust extinction curve shows the 2175 AA bump known from the Local Group. It also shows absorption from cold gas exemplified by CI and CO molecules. For this paper, we present narrow-band observations of the field of Q1218+0832 and also use an archival Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image to search for the galaxy counterpart of the DLA. No emission from the DLA galaxy is found in either the narrow-band imaging or in the HST image. In the HST image, we could probe down to an impact parameter of 0.3 arcsec and a 3-sigma detection limit of 26.8 mag per arcsec^2. In the narrow-band image, we probed down to a 0 arcsec impact parameter and detected nothing down to a 3-sigma detection limit of about 3x10-17 erg s^-1 cm^-2 . We did detect a bright Lyman-alpha emitter 59 arcsec south of Q1218+0832 with a flux of 3x10^-16 erg s^-1 cm^-2 . We conclude that the DLA galaxy must be located at a very small impact parameter (<0.3 arcsec, 2.5 kpc) or it is optically dark. We present high-resolution VLT/UVES spectroscopy and a detailed analysis of the unique Broad Absorption-Line system towards the quasar SDSS J165252.67+265001.96. This system exhibits low-ionization metal absorption lines from the ground states and excited energy levels of Fe II and Mn II, and the meta-stable 2^3S excited state of He I. The extended kinematics of the absorber encompasses three main clumps with velocity offsets of -5680, -4550, and -1770 km s$^{-1}$ from the quasar emission redshift, $z=0.3509\pm0.0003$, derived from [O II] emission. Each clump shows moderate partial covering of the background continuum source, $C_f \approx [0.53; 0.24; 0.81]$. We discuss the excitation mechanisms at play in the gas, which we use to constrain the distance of the clouds from the Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) as well as the density, temperature, and typical sizes of the clouds. The number density is found to be $n_{\rm H} \sim 10^4\rm cm^{-3}$ and the temperature $T_e \sim 10^4\rm\,K$, with longitudinal cloudlet sizes of $\gtrsim0.01$ pc. Cloudy photo-ionization modelling of He I$^{*}$, which is also produced at the interface between the neutral and ionized phases, assuming the number densities derived from Fe II, constrains the ionization parameter to be $\log U \sim -3$. This corresponds to distances of a few 100 pc from the AGN. We discuss these results in the more general context of associated absorption-line systems and propose a connection between FeLoBALs and the recently-identified molecular-rich intrinsic absorbers. When it comes to storing 3D city models in a database, the implementation of the CityGML data model can be quite demanding and often results in complicated schemas. As an example, 3DCityDB, a widely used solution, depends on a schema having 66 tables, mapping closely the CityGML architecture. In this paper, we propose an alternative (called cjdb) for storing CityGML models efficiently in PostgreSQL with a much simpler table structure and data model design (only 3 tables are necessary). This is achieved by storing the attributes and geometries of the objects directly in JSON. In the case of the geometries we thus adopt the Simple Feature paradigm and we use the structure of CityJSON. We compare our solution against 3DCityDB with large real-world 3D city models, and we find that cjdb has significantly lower demands in storage space (around a factor of 10), allows for faster import/export of data, and has a comparable data retrieval speed with some queries being faster and some slower. We present the spatially resolved measurements of a cool galactic outflow in the gravitationally lensed galaxy RCS0327 at $z \approx 1.703$ using VLT/MUSE IFU observations. We probe the cool outflowing gas, traced by blueshifted Mg II and Fe II absorption lines, in 15 distinct regions of the same galaxy in its image-plane. Different physical regions, 5 to 7 kpc apart within the galaxy, drive the outflows at different velocities ($V_{out} \sim $ $-161$ to $-240$ km s$^{-1}$), and mass outflow rates ($\dot{M}_{out} \sim$ 183 to 527 $M_{\odot}\ yr^{-1}$). The outflow velocities from different regions of the same galaxy vary by 80 km s$^{-1}$, which is comparable to the variation seen in a large sample of star-burst galaxies in the local Universe. Using multiply lensed images of RCS0327, we probe the same star-forming region at different spatial scales (0.5 kpc$^2$-25 kpc$^2$), we find that outflow velocities vary between $ \sim $ $-120$ to $-242$ km s$^{-1}$, and the mass outflow rates vary between $\sim$ 37 to 254 $M_{\odot}\ yr^{-1}$. The outflow momentum flux in this galaxy is $\geq$ 100% of the momentum flux provided by star-formation in individual regions, and outflow energy flux is $\approx$ 10% of the total energy flux provided by star-formation. These estimates suggest that the outflow in RCS0327 is energy driven. Many scientific computing problems can be reduced to Matrix-Matrix Multiplications (MMM), making the General Matrix Multiply (GEMM) kernels in the Basic Linear Algebra Subroutine (BLAS) of interest to the high-performance computing community. However, these workloads have a wide range of numerical requirements. Ill-conditioned linear systems require high-precision arithmetic to ensure correct and reproducible results. In contrast, emerging workloads such as deep neural networks, which can have millions up to billions of parameters, have shown resilience to arithmetic tinkering and precision lowering.

Proximate molecular quasar absorbers (PH2) are an intriguing population of absorption systems recently uncovered through strong H2 absorption at small velocity separation from the background quasars. We performed a multi-wavelength spectroscopic follow-up of thirteen such systems with VLT/X-Shooter. Here, we present the observations and study the overall chemical enrichment measured from the HI, H2 and metal lines. We combine this with an investigation of the neutral gas kinematics with respect to the quasar host. We find gas-phase metallicities in the range 2% to 40% of the Solar value, i.e. in the upper-half range of HI-selected proximate damped Lyman-alpha systems, but similar to what is seen in intervening H2-bearing systems. This is likely driven by similar selection effects that play against the detection of most metal and molecular rich systems in absorption. Differences are however seen in the abundance of dust (from [Zn/Fe]) and its depletion pattern, when compared to intervening systems, possibly indicating different dust production or destruction close to the AGN. We also note the almost-ubiquitous presence of a high-ionisation phase traced by NV in proximate systems. In spite of the hard UV field from the quasars, we found no strong overall deficit of neutral argon, at least when compared to intervening DLAs. This likely results from argon being mostly neutral in the H2 phase, which actually accounts for a large fraction of the total amount of metals. We measure the quasar systemic redshifts through emission lines from both ionised gas and CO(3-2) emission, the latter being detected in all 6 cases for which we obtained 3-mm data from complementary NOEMA observations. For the first time, we observe a trend between line-of-sight velocity with respect to systemic redshift and metallicity of the absorbing gas. [truncated], Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A
