Abstract

Numerous domains, in fundamental research as well as in applications, require the study of reactions induced by neutrons with energies from few MeV up to few tens of MeV. Reliable measurements also are necessary to improve the evaluated databases used by nuclear transport codes. This energy range covers a large number of topics like transmutation of nuclear waste, design of future fission and fusion reactors, nuclear medicine or test and development of new detectors. A new facility called Neutrons For Science (NFS) is being built for this purpose on the GANIL site at Caen (France). NFS is composed of a pulsed neutron beam for time-of-flight facility as well as irradiation stations for cross-section measurements. Neutrons will be produced by the interaction of deuteron and proton beams, delivered by the SPIRAL-2 linear accelerator, with thick or thin converters made of beryllium or lithium. Continuous and quasi-mono-energetic spectra will be available at NFS up to 40 MeV. In this fast energy region, the neutron flux is expected to be up to 2 orders of magnitude higher than at other existing time-of-flight facilities. In addition, irradiation stations for neutron-, proton- and deuteron-induced reactions will allow performing cross-section measurements by the activation technique. After a description of the facility and its characteristics, the experiments to be performed in the short and medium term will be presented.

Abstract

International audience; The future SPIRAL-2 facility is mainly composed of a high-power superconducting driver LINAC, delivering a high-intensity deuteron, proton and heavy ions beams. The first two beams are particularly well suited to the construction of a neutron beam and irradiation facility called Neutrons for Science (NFS). Thick C and Be target-converters with incident deuteron beam will produce an intense white neutron spectrum, while thin 7Li target and incident proton beam allows generating quasi-monoenergetic neutrons. The 1–40MeV neutron energy range will be covered and characterized by very intense fluxes available. The primary ion beam characteristics (energy, time resolution, intensity, etc.) are adequate to create a neutron time-of-flight facility. Irradiation stations for neutron, proton and deuteron induced reactions could also be built in order to perform cross-sections measurements by activation techniques. In this paper we will discuss the potential of this new installation to investigate numerous topics, both in fundamental and applied physics. In particular, cross section measurements could be performed for different purposes like nuclear data evaluation, fission and fusion technology, Accelerator Driven Systems, nuclear medicine, astrophysics, etc.

Abstract

International audience; Data have been obtained on exclusive single neutron knockout cross sections from 12Be to study its ground state structure. The cross sections for the production of 11Be in its ground state (1/2+) and first excited state (0.32 MeV, 1/2−) have previously been measured, indicating a strong (2s½)2 component to the 12Be ground state. In the present experiment, performed at the GANIL laboratory, cross sections for the first (0.32 MeV, 1/2−) and second (1.78 MeV, 5/2+, unbound) excited states in 11Be were measured, which gives information on the admixture of (1p½)2 and (1math)2 components in the ground state of 12Be. A fragmentation beam of 12Be of ∼10000 pps (95% pure) was incident on a carbon target at 41 MeV/u. The beam particles were tracked onto the target, and their energies were measured event‐by‐event. The beam‐like residues were measured in a position sensitive telescope mounted at zero degrees, and neutrons were measured in the DéMoN array. The 1/2− state of 11Be was identified by measuring coincident 320 keV γ‐rays, using four NaI detectors. Full kinematic reconstruction of unbound states in 11Be was performed using coincident neutrons and 10Be ions. Detailed simulations were performed in order to interpret the data, and spectroscopic factors were calculated, using preliminary single particle removal cross sections calculated using a Glauber model. © 2005 American Institute of Physics

Abstract

The structure of 10Be has been investigated by inelastic scattering to states above the breakup threshold using the reaction 12C(10Be, 10Be*-->6He+4He)12C at Ebeam = 302 MeV. Excited states in 10Be were observed at 9.6&plusmn ; ; 0.1 and 10.2&plusmn ; ; 0.1 MeV. No evidence was observed for the population of the 4+ member of the ground-state band of 10Be indicating the shell-model-like structure of the ground state. In addition, the decay of 8Be, 10B, and 11B, populated in the two-neutron, proton pickup, breakup and 1p pickup reactions, was reconstructed through the detection of coincident 4He+4He, 4He+6Li, and 4He+7Li particles. Cross sections for the formation of the 8Be, 9Be, 10B, and 11B were also deduced. Contrary to expectations, the two-neutron removal results in the production of 8Be predominantly (80%) in the first excited (2+) state. This suggests that dynamical excitations play an important role in the neutron removal process.

Abstract

Measurements of the neutron removal and cluster breakup cross sections for the neutron-rich nuclei 14Be and 14B have been performed at 34.4 and 40.8 MeV/nucleon, respectively. Enhancement of the first chance cluster breakup cross section for 14Be compared to that of 14B provides evidence for a well-developed He cluster structure of the ground state of 14Be. Measurements of both the cross sections and decay-particle velocities suggest that multistep processes play an important role in the excitation and decay of both 14B and 14Be.

Abstract

A description of a study of the neutron-rich unbound systems 16B and 13Be is presented. The structure of these nuclei provides strong constraints on current models and vital information for a three-body description of the Borromean two-neutron halo nuclei 17B and 14Be. The experimental work was undertaken at GANIL. Single-proton removal reactions were employed to populate the nuclei of interest, starting with a secondary beam of 17C at 35 MeV/nucleon (for 16B) and 14B at 41 MeV/nucleon (for 13Be). The charged fragments were detected using a position-sensitive Si-Si-CsI telescope of the CHARISSA collaboration, and the neutron using the DéMoN modular array. The decay energy spectra for 16B and 13Be were thus reconstructed from the measured 15B-n and 12Be-n coincidences. A theoretical description, based on the sudden approximation, of the population of unbound final states was developed. The predicted decay energy spectra were compared with the measurements after folding in the response of the experimental setup. This involved the use of simulations based on GEANT and a code, BELZEBUTH, developed specifically for the present work. In the case of 15B+n the data were best reproduced assuming the population of a narrow, low-lying (about 85 keV) d-wave resonance(s). The 12Be+n data were consistent with the population of a very broad (1-2 MeV) s-wave state at around 600-800 keV and a d-wave resonance at 2.5 MeV., Ce travail porte sur l'étude de deux systèmes non liés, le 16B et le 13Be, dont la structure très exotique fournit de fortes contraintes sur les modèles actuels et des informations primordiales pour modéliser les systèmes à trois corps que sont les noyaux à halo borroméens 17B et 14Be. Les deux expériences réalisées au GANIL consistaient à peupler les noyaux d'intérêt à partir de réactions de perte d'un proton d'un faisceau secondaire de 17C à 35 MeV/nucléon pour le 16B et de 14B à 41 MeV/nucléon pour le 13Be. L'utilisation d'un télescope sensible en position Si-Si-CsI de la collaboration CHARISSA pour détecter les fragments chargés, et du multidétecteur DéMoN pour les neutrons, permettait de reconstruire les spectres en énergie de décroissance du 16B et du 13Be à partir des coïncidences 15B-n et 12Be-n. Une description théorique, fondée sur l'approximation soudaine, du peuplement des états finals non liés a été développée. Les spectres en énergie de décroissance prédits ont été comparés aux données après convolution avec la réponse du dispositif expérimental, obtenue en utilisant deux codes de simulation, le premier basé sur GEANT et le second, BELZEBUTH, développé spécialement pour cette étude. Le meilleur accord avec les données 15B+n suppose le peuplement d'une (de) résonance(s) d très étroites à basse énergie (environ 85 keV). Les données 12Be+n sont en accord avec le peuplement d'un état s très large (1-2 MeV) autour de 600-800 keV et d'une résonance d à 2,5 MeV.

Abstract

Abstract: The strength for 11Be has been extracted from intermediate energy Coulomb excitation measurements, over a range of beam energies using a new reaction model, the extended continuum discretized coupled channels (XCDCC) method. In addition, a measurement of the excitation cross section for at 38.6 MeV/nucleon is reported. The strength of 0.105(12) e2 fm2 derived from this measurement is consistent with those made previously at 60 and 64 MeV/nucleon, in contrast to an anomalously low result obtained at 43 MeV/nucleon. By coupling a multi-configuration description of the projectile structure with realistic reaction theory, the XCDCC model provides for the first time a fully quantum mechanical description of Coulomb excitation. The XCDCC calculations reveal that the excitation process involves significant contributions from nuclear, continuum, and higher-order effects. An analysis of the present and two earlier intermediate energy measurements yields a combined B(E1) strength of 0.105(7) e2 fm2. This value is in good agreement with the value deduced independently from the lifetime of the state in 11Be, and has a comparable precision. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

Measurements of the beta-decay half-lives of neutron-rich nuclei (Mg&z.sbnd;Ar) in the vicinity of the N=28 shell closure are reported. Some 22 half-lives have been determined, 12 of which for the first time. Particular emphasis is placed on the results for the Si isotopes, the half-lives of which have been extended from N=25 to 28. Comparison with QRPA calculations suggests that 42Si is strongly deformed. This is discussed in the light of a possible weakening of the spin–orbit potential. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The shell closure N=20 has been studied by β-decay spectroscopy experiment performed at the GANIL facility. The experimental setup is described and first results on the beta-decay of 32Mg are presented. The extracted level scheme of 32Al is compared to Shell Model calculations and discussed in the light of the structural changes observed for the nuclei of the so-called island of inversion.
