The brain's microvascular cerebral capillary network plays a vital role in maintaining neuronal health, yet capillary dynamics are still not well understood due to limitations in existing imaging techniques. Here, we present Single Capillary Reporters (SCaRe) for transcranial Ultrasound Localization Microscopy (ULM), a novel approach enabling non-invasive, whole-brain mapping of single capillaries and estimates of their transit-time as a neurovascular biomarker. We accomplish this first through computational Monte Carlo and ultrasound simulations of microbubbles flowing through a fully-connected capillary network. We unveil distinct capillary flow behaviors which informs methodological changes to ULM acquisitions to better capture capillaries in vivo. Subsequently, applying SCaRe-ULM in vivo, we achieve unprecedented visualization of single capillary tracks across brain regions, analysis of layer-specific capillary heterogeneous transit times (CHT), and characterization of whole microbubble trajectories from arterioles to venules. Lastly, we evaluate capillary biomarkers using injected lipopolysaccharide to induce systemic neuroinflammation and track the increase in SCaRe-ULM CHT, demonstrating the capability to detect subtle capillary functional changes. Local interlayer charge polarization of twisted bilayer hexagonal boron nitride (t2BN) is calculated and parametrized as a function of twist angle and perpendicular electric fields through tight-binding calculations on lattice relaxed geometries Lattice relaxations tend to increase the bandwidth of the nearly flat bands, where widths smaller than 1 meV are expected for angle less than 1.08 degree for parallel BN/BN alignment, and for angle less than 1.5 degree for the antiparallel BN/NB alignment. Local interlayer charge polarization maxima of 2.6 pC/m corresponding are expected at the AB and BA stacking sites of BN/BN aligned t2BN in the long moire period limit for angle less than 1 degree, and evolves non-monotonically with a maximum of 3.5 pC/m at angle equal to 1.6 degree before reaching 2 pC/m for angle equal to 6 degree. The electrostatic potential maxima due to the t2BN are overall enhanced by 20 percentage with respect to the rigid system assuming potential modulation depths of up to 300 mV near its surface. In BN/BN aligned bilayers the relative areas of the AB or BA local stacking regions can be expanded or reduced through a vertical electric field depending on its sign.

Radio Resource Management is a challenging topic in future 6G networks where novel applications create strong competition among the users for the available resources. In this work we consider the frequency scheduling problem in a multi-user MIMO system. Frequency resources need to be assigned to a set of users while allowing for concurrent transmissions in the same sub-band. Traditional methods are insufficient to cope with all the involved constraints and uncertainties, whereas reinforcement learning can directly learn near-optimal solutions for such complex environments. However, the scheduling problem has an enormous action space accounting for all the combinations of users and sub-bands, so out-of-the-box algorithms cannot be used directly. In this work, we propose a scheduler based on action-branching over sub-bands, which is a deep Q-learning architecture with parallel decision capabilities. The sub-bands learn correlated but local decision policies and altogether they optimize a global reward. To improve the scaling of the architecture with the number of sub-bands, we propose variations (Unibranch, Graph Neural Network-based) that reduce the number of parameters to learn. The parallel decision making of the proposed architecture allows to meet short inference time requirements in real systems. Furthermore, the deep Q-learning approach permits online fine-tuning after deployment to bridge the sim-to-real gap. The role of brain hemodynamics in neurodegenerative diseases cannot be fully assessed using existing imaging technologies. Recently, 2D Dynamic Ultrasound Localization Microscopy (DULM) has allowed for the quantitative mapping of the pulsatile flow at sub-wavelength resolution. However, to obtain accurate velocity estimates, 3D imaging is more adapted, especially for complex vascularized organs like the brain. 3D+t DULM is achievable using matrix array probes, but suffers from limitations in terms of cost, device complexity associated with the high channel count, and operating frequencies. Alternatively, Row Column Arrays (RCA) can reduce the number of elements while maintaining a large field of view and high frame rate. Herein, we demonstrate the feasibility of performing 3D+t blood flow measurements in the mouse brain using an RCA and a DULM sequence with a high spatiotemporal resolution. Transcranial images of anesthetized mice (n=7) were acquired at a volume rate of 750 Hz using 42 tilted plane waves. After microbubbles localization and tracking, super-resolved dynamic density and velocity maps of the 3D brain vascular network were obtained. Cortical vessels were segmented and pulsatility in the arteries was significantly higher than in veins for all mice, in accordance with the literature. Deep learning is computationally intensive, with significant efforts focused on reducing arithmetic complexity, particularly regarding energy consumption dominated by data movement. While existing literature emphasizes inference, training is considerably more resource-intensive. This paper proposes a novel mathematical principle by introducing the notion of Boolean variation such that neurons made of Boolean weights and inputs can be trained -- for the first time -- efficiently in Boolean domain using Boolean logic instead of gradient descent and real arithmetic. We explore its convergence, conduct extensively experimental benchmarking, and provide consistent complexity evaluation by considering chip architecture, memory hierarchy, dataflow, and arithmetic precision. Our approach achieves baseline full-precision accuracy in ImageNet classification and surpasses state-of-the-art results in semantic segmentation, with notable performance in image super-resolution, and natural language understanding with transformer-based models. We introduce ReALLM, a novel approach for compression and memory-efficient adaptation of pre-trained language models that encompasses most of the post-training quantization and fine-tuning methods for a budget of <4 bits. Pre-trained matrices are decomposed into a high-precision low-rank component and a vector-quantized latent representation (using an autoencoder). During the fine-tuning step, only the low-rank components are updated. Our results show that pre-trained matrices exhibit different patterns. ReALLM adapts the shape of the encoder (small/large embedding, high/low bit VQ, etc.) to each matrix. ReALLM proposes to represent each matrix with a small embedding on $b$ bits and a neural decoder model $\mathcal{D}_\phi$ with its weights on $b_\phi$ bits. The decompression of a matrix requires only one embedding and a single forward pass with the decoder. Our weight-only quantization algorithm yields the best results on language generation tasks (C4 and WikiText-2) for a budget of $3$ bits without any training. With a budget of $2$ bits, ReALLM achieves state-of-the art performance after fine-tuning on a small calibration dataset.

Twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) provides a fascinating platform for engineering flat bands and inducing correlated phenomena. By designing the stacking architecture of graphene layers, twisted multilayer graphene can exhibit different symmetries with rich tunability. For example, in twisted monolayer-bilayer graphene (tMBG) which breaks the C2z symmetry, transport measurements reveal an asymmetric phase diagram under an out-of-plane electric field, exhibiting correlated insulating state and ferromagnetic state respectively when reversing the field direction. Revealing how the electronic structure evolves with electric field is critical for providing a better understanding of such asymmetric field-tunable properties. Here we report the experimental observation of field-tunable dichotomic electronic structure of tMBG by nanospot angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (NanoARPES) with operando gating. Interestingly, selective enhancement of the relative spectral weight contributions from monolayer and bilayer graphene is observed when switching the polarity of the bias voltage. Combining experimental results with theoretical calculations, the origin of such field-tunable electronic structure, resembling either tBLG or twisted double-bilayer graphene (tDBG), is attributed to the selectively enhanced contribution from different stacking graphene layers with a strong electron-hole asymmetry. The observations made during the Voyager 2 flyby have shown that the stratosphere of Uranus and Neptune are warmer than expected by previous models. In addition, no seasonal variability of the thermal structure has been observed on Uranus since Voyager 2 era and significant subseasonal variations have been revealed on Neptune. In this paper, we evaluate different realistic heat sources that can induce sufficient heating to warm the atmosphere of these planets and we estimate the seasonal effects on the thermal structure. The seasonal radiative-convective model developed by the Laboratoire de M\'et\'eorologie Dynamique is used to reproduce the thermal structure of these planets. Three hypotheses for the heating sources are explored separately: aerosol layers, a higher methane mole fraction, and thermospheric conduction. Our modelling indicates that aerosols with plausible scattering properties can produce the requisite heating for Uranus, but not for Neptune. Alternatively, greater stratospheric methane abundances can provide the missing heating on both planets, but the large values needed are inconsistent with current observational constraints. In contrast, adding thermospheric conduction cannot warm alone the stratosphere of both planets. The combination of these heat sources is also investigated. In the upper troposphere of both planets, the meridional thermal structures produced by our model are found inconsistent with those retrieved from Voyager 2/IRIS data. Furthermore, our models predict seasonal variations should exist within the stratospheres of both planets while observations showed that Uranus seems to be invariant to meridional contrasts and only subseasonal temperature trends are visible on Neptune. However, a warm south pole is seen in our simulations of Neptune as observed since 2003.

We develop an interior-point method for nonsmooth regularized bound-constrained optimization problems. Our method consists of iteratively solving a sequence of unconstrained nonsmooth barrier subproblems. We use a variant of the proximal quasi-Newton trust-region algorithm TR of arXiv:2103.15993v3 to solve the barrier subproblems, with additional assumptions inspired from well-known smooth interior-point trust-region methods. We show global convergence of our algorithm with respect to the criticality measure of arXiv:2103.15993v3. Under an additional assumption linked to the convexity of the nonsmooth term in the objective, we present an alternative interior-point algorithm with a slightly modified criticality measure, which performs better in practice. Numerical experiments show that our algorithm performs better than the trust-region method TR, the trust-region method with diagonal hessian approximations TRDH of arXiv:2309.08433, and the quadratic regularization method R2 of arXiv:2103.15993v3 for two out of four tested bound-constrained problems. On those two problems, our algorithm obtains smaller objective values than the other solvers using fewer objective and gradient evaluations. With the new generation of space telescopes such as the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), it is possible to better characterize the atmospheres of exoplanets. The atmospheres of Hot and Ultra Hot Jupiters are highly heterogeneous and asymmetrical. The difference between the temperatures on the day-side and the night-side is especially extreme in the case of Ultra Hot Jupiters. We introduce a new tool to compute synthetic lightcurves from 3D GCM simulations, developed in the Pytmosph3R framework. We show how rotation induces a variation of the flux during the transit that is a source of information on the chemical and thermal distribution of the atmosphere. We find that the day-night gradient linked to Ultra Hot Jupiters has an effect close to the stellar limb-darkening, but opposite to tidal deformation. We confirm the impact of the atmospheric and chemical distribution on variations of the central transit time, though the variations found are smaller than that of available observational data, which could indicate that the east-west asymmetries are underestimated, due to the chemistry or clouds., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A (16th Feb.) 17 pages, 18 figures + 7 in appendices

We study asynchronous federated learning mechanisms with nodes having potentially different computational speeds. In such an environment, each node is allowed to work on models with potential delays and contribute to updates to the central server at its own pace. Existing analyses of such algorithms typically depend on intractable quantities such as the maximum node delay and do not consider the underlying queuing dynamics of the system. In this paper, we propose a non-uniform sampling scheme for the central server that allows for lower delays with better complexity, taking into account the closed Jackson network structure of the associated computational graph. Our experiments clearly show a significant improvement of our method over current state-of-the-art asynchronous algorithms on an image classification problem.

Radiative transfer (RT) models are critical in the interpretation of exoplanetary spectra, in simulating exoplanet climates and when designing the specifications of future flagship observatories. However, most models differ in methodologies and input data, which can lead to significantly different spectra. In this paper, we present the experimental protocol of the MALBEC (Modeling Atmospheric Lines By the Exoplanet Community) project. MALBEC is an exoplanet model intercomparison project (exoMIP) that belongs to the CUISINES (Climates Using Interactive Suites of Intercomparisons Nested for Exoplanet Studies) framework which aims to provide the exoplanet community with a large and diverse set of comparison and validation of models. The proposed protocol tests include a large set of initial participating RT models, a broad range of atmospheres (from Hot Jupiters to temperate terrestrials) and several observation geometries, which would allow us to quantify and compare the differences between different RT models used by the exoplanetary community. Two types of tests are proposed: transit spectroscopy and direct imaging modeling, with results from the proposed tests to be published in dedicated follow-up papers. To encourage the community to join this comparison effort and as an example, we present simulation results for one specific transit case (GJ-1214 b), in which we find notable differences in how the various codes handle the discretization of the atmospheres (e.g., sub-layering), the treatment of molecular opacities (e.g., correlated-k, line-by-line) and the default spectroscopic repositories generally used by each model (e.g., HITRAN, HITEMP, ExoMol).

The notion of Boolean logic backpropagation was introduced to build neural networks with weights and activations being Boolean numbers. Most of computations can be done with Boolean logic instead of real arithmetic, both during training and inference phases. But the underlying discrete optimization problem is NP-hard, and the Boolean logic has no guarantee. In this work we propose the first convergence analysis, under standard non-convex assumptions.

Hot Jupiters exhibit large day-night temperature contrasts. Their cooler nightsides are thought to host clouds. However, the exact nature of these clouds, their spatial distribution, and their impact on atmospheric dynamics, thermal structure, and spectra is still unclear. We investigate the atmosphere of WASP-43 b, a short period hot Jupiter recently observed with JWST, to understand the radiative and dynamical impact of clouds on the atmospheric circulation and thermal structure. We aim to understand the impact of different kinds of condensates potentially forming in WASP-43 b, with various sizes and atmospheric metallicities. We used a 3D global climate model (GCM) with a new temperature-dependent cloud model that includes radiative feed-backs coupled with hydrodynamical integrations to study the atmospheric properties of WASP-43 b. We produced observables from our simulations and compared them to spectral phase curves from various observations. We show that clouds have a net warming effect, meaning that the greenhouse effect caused by clouds is stronger than the albedo cooling effect. We show that the radiative effect of clouds has various impacts on the dynamical and thermal structure of WASP-43 b. Depending on the type of condensates and their sizes, the radiative-dynamical feedback will modify the horizontal and vertical temperature gradient and reduce the wind speed. For super-solar metallicity atmospheres, fewer clouds form in the atmosphere, leading to a weaker feedback. Comparisons with spectral phase curves observed with HST, Spitzer, and JWST indicate that WASP-43 b s nightside is cloudy and rule out sub-micron Mg2SiO4 cloud particles as the main opacity source. Hot Jupiters are among the best-studied exoplanets, but it is still poorly understood how their chemical composition and cloud properties vary with longitude. Theoretical models predict that clouds may condense on the nightside and that molecular abundances can be driven out of equilibrium by zonal winds. Here we report a phase-resolved emission spectrum of the hot Jupiter WASP-43b measured from 5-12 $\mu$m with JWST's Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI). The spectra reveal a large day-night temperature contrast (with average brightness temperatures of 1524$\pm$35 and 863$\pm$23 Kelvin, respectively) and evidence for water absorption at all orbital phases. Comparisons with three-dimensional atmospheric models show that both the phase curve shape and emission spectra strongly suggest the presence of nightside clouds which become optically thick to thermal emission at pressures greater than ~100 mbar. The dayside is consistent with a cloudless atmosphere above the mid-infrared photosphere. Contrary to expectations from equilibrium chemistry but consistent with disequilibrium kinetics models, methane is not detected on the nightside (2$\sigma$ upper limit of 1-6 parts per million, depending on model assumptions)., Comment: 61 pages, 13 figures, 4 tables. While small, Neptune-like planets are among the most abundant exoplanets, our understanding of their atmospheric structure and dynamics remains sparse. In particular, many unknowns remain on the way moist convection works in these atmospheres where condensable species are heavier than the non-condensable background gas. While it has been predicted that moist convection could shut-down above some threshold abundance of these condensable species, this prediction is based on simple linear analysis and relies on strong assumptions on the saturation of the atmosphere. To investigate this issue, we develop a 3D cloud resolving model for H2 atmospheres with large amounts of condensable species and apply this model to a prototypical temperate Neptune-like planet -- K2-18b. Our model confirms the shut-down of moist convection and the onset of a stably stratified layer in the atmosphere, leading to much hotter deep atmospheres and interiors. Our 3D simulations further provide quantitative estimates of the turbulent mixing in this stable layer, which is a key driver of the cycling of condensables in the atmosphere. This allows us to build a very simple, yet realistic 1D model that captures the most salient features of the structure of Neptune-like atmospheres. Our qualitative findings on the behavior of moist convection in hydrogen atmospheres go beyond temperate planets and should also apply to the regions where iron and silicates condense in the deep interior of H2-dominated planets. Finally, we use our model to investigate the likelihood of a liquid ocean beneath a H2 dominated atmosphere on K2-18b. We find that the planet would need to have a very high albedo (>0.5-0.6) to sustain a liquid ocean. However, due to the spectral type of the star, the amount of aerosol scattering that would be needed to provide such a high albedo is inconsistent with the latest observational data., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Observed exoplanet transit spectra are usually retrieved using 1D models to determine atmospheric composition while planetary atmospheres are 3D. With the JWST and future space telescopes such as Ariel, we will be able to obtain increasingly accurate transit spectra. The 3D effects on the spectra will be visible, and we can expect biases in the 1D extractions. In order to elucidate these biases, we have built theoretical observations of transit spectra, from 3D atmospheric modeling through transit modeling to instrument modeling. 3D effects are observed to be strongly nonlinear from the coldest to the hottest planets. These effects also depend on the planet's metallicity and gravity. Considering equilibrium chemistry, 3D effects are observed through very strong variations in certain features of the molecule or very small variations over the whole spectrum. We conclude that we cannot rely on the uncertainty of retrievals at all pressures, and that we must be cautious about the results of retrievals at the top of the atmosphere. However the results are still fairly close to the truth at mid-altitudes (those probed). We also need to be careful with the chemical models used for planetary atmosphere. If the chemistry of one molecule is not correctly described, this will bias all the others, and the retrieved temperature as well. Finally, although fitting a wider wavelength range and higher resolution has been shown to increase retrieval accuracy, we show that this could depend on the wavelength range chosen, due to the accuracy on modeling the different features. In any case, 1D retrievals are still correct for the detection of molecules, even in the event of an erroneous abundance retrieval.

We develop a worst-case evaluation complexity bound for trust-region methods in the presence of unbounded Hessian approximations. We use the algorithm of arXiv:2103.15993v3 as a model, which is designed for nonsmooth regularized problems, but applies to unconstrained smooth problems as a special case. Our analysis assumes that the growth of the Hessian approximation is controlled by the number of successful iterations. We show that the best known complexity bound of $\epsilon^{-2}$ deteriorates to $\epsilon^{-2/(1-p)}$, where $0 \le p < 1$ is a parameter that controls the growth of the Hessian approximation. The faster the Hessian approximation grows, the more the bound deteriorates. We construct an objective that satisfies all of our assumptions and for which our complexity bound is attained, which establishes that our bound is sharp. We report intriguing and hitherto overlooked low-field room temperature extremely large magnetoresistance (XMR) patterns in graphene/hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) superlattices that emerge due to the existence of open orbits within each miniband. This finding is set against the backdrop of the experimental discovery of the Hofstadter butterfly in moir superlattices, which has sparked considerable interest in the fractal quantum Hall regime. To cope with the challenge of deciphering the low magnetic field dynamics of moir minibands, we utilize a novel semi-classical calculation method, grounded in zero-field Fermi contours, to predict the nontrivial behavior of the Landau-level spectrum. This is compared with fully quantum simulations, enabling an in-depth and contrasted analysis of transport measurements in high-quality graphene-hBN superlattices. Our results not only highlight the primary observation of the open-orbit induced XMR in this system but also shed new light on other intricate phenomena. These include the nuances of single miniband dynamics, evident through Lifshitz transitions, and the complex interplay of semiclassical and quantum effects between these minibands. Specifically, we document transport anomalies linked to trigonal warping, a semiclassical deviation from the expected linear characteristics of Landau levels, and magnetic breakdown phenomena indicative of quantum tunneling, all effects jointly contributing to the intricacies of a rich electronic landscape uncovered at low magnetic fields., Comment: 5 figures

Water vapour atmospheres with content equivalent to the Earth's oceans, resulting from impacts or a high insolation, were found to yield a surface magma ocean. This was, however, a consequence of assuming a fully convective structure. Here we report, using a consistent climate model, that pure steam atmospheres are commonly shaped by radiative layers, making their thermal structure strongly dependent on the stellar spectrum and internal heat flow. The surface is cooler when an adiabatic profile is not imposed: melting Earth's crust requires an insolation several times higher than today, which will not happen during the main-sequence of the Sun. Venus' surface can solidify before the steam atmosphere escapes, which is opposite to previous works. Around the reddest stars ($T_{eff}<$3000K), surface magma oceans cannot form by stellar forcing alone, whatever the water content. These findings affect observable signatures of steam atmospheres and exoplanet mass-radius relationships, drastically changing current constraints on the water content of Trappist-1 planets. Unlike adiabatic structures, radiative-convective profiles are sensitive to opacities. The recently discovered super-Earth LP 890-9 c is an intriguing target for atmospheric studies as it transits a nearby, low-activity late-type M-dwarf star at the inner edge of the Habitable Zone. Its position at the runaway greenhouse limit makes it a natural laboratory to study the climate evolution of hot rocky planets. We present the first 3D-GCM exo-Venus model for a modern Venus-like atmosphere (92 bar surface pressure, realistic composition, H$_2$SO$_4$ radiatively-active clouds), applied to the tidally-locked LP 890-9c to inform observations by JWST and future instruments. If LP 890-9 c has developed into a modern exo-Venus, then the modelled temperatures suggest that H$_2$SO$_4$ clouds are possible even in the substellar region. Like on modern Venus, clouds on LP 890-9 c would create a flat spectrum. The strongest CO$_2$ bands in transmission predicted by our model for LP 890-9 c are about 10 ppm, challenging detection, given JWST estimated noise floor. Estimated phase curve amplitudes are 0.9 and 2.4 ppm for continuum and CO$_2$ bands, respectively. We introduce a variant of the proximal gradient method in which the quadratic term is diagonal but may be indefinite, and is safeguarded by a trust region. Our method is a special case of the proximal quasi-Newton trust-region method of arXiv:2103.15993v3. We provide closed-form solution of the step computation in certain cases where the nonsmooth term is separable and the trust region is defined in infinity norm, so that no iterative subproblem solver is required. Our analysis expands upon that of arXiv:2103.15993v3 by generalizing the trust-region approach to problems with bound constraints. We provide an efficient open-source implementation of our method, named TRDH, in the Julia language in which Hessians approximations are given by diagonal quasi-Newton updates. TRDH evaluates one standard proximal operator and one indefinite proximal operator per iteration. We also analyze and implement a variant named iTRDH that performs a single indefinite proximal operator evaluation per iteration. We establish that iTRDH enjoys the same asymptotic worst-case iteration complexity as TRDH. We report numerical experience on unconstrained and bound-constrained problems, where TRDH and iTRDH are used both as standalone and subproblem solvers. Our results illustrate that, as standalone solvers, TRDH and iTRDH improve upon the quadratic regularization method R2 of arXiv:2103.15993v3 but also sometimes upon their quasi-Newton trust-region method, referred to here as TR-R2, in terms of smooth objective value and gradient evaluations. Turbulence-driven quasi-stationnary structures known as 'staircase' are investigated using the collisional drift-wave model. Two-dimensional simulations show that the ability of zonal density corrugations to suppress turbulence are affected by the adiabaticity parameter (inversely proportional to collision frequency). As the adiabaticity parameter increases, zonal density becomes less efficient at suppressing turbulence, and zonal flows become dominant in the near-adiabatic regime. Understanding the set of conditions that allow rocky planets to have liquid water on their surface -- in the form of lakes, seas or oceans -- is a major scientific step to determine the fraction of planets potentially suitable for the emergence and development of life as we know it on Earth. This effort is also necessary to define and refine the so-called "Habitable Zone" (HZ) in order to guide the search for exoplanets likely to harbor remotely detectable life forms. Until now, most numerical climate studies on this topic have focused on the conditions necessary to maintain oceans, but not to form them in the first place. Here we use the three-dimensional Generic Planetary Climate Model (PCM), historically known as the LMD Generic Global Climate Model (GCM), to simulate water-dominated planetary atmospheres around different types of Main-Sequence stars. The simulations are designed to reproduce the conditions of early ocean formation on rocky planets due to the condensation of the primordial water reservoir at the end of the magma ocean phase. We show that the incoming stellar radiation (ISR) required to form oceans by condensation is always drastically lower than that required to vaporize oceans. We introduce a Water Condensation Limit, which lies at significantly lower ISR than the inner edge of the HZ calculated with three-dimensional numerical climate simulations. This difference is due to a behavior change of water clouds, from low-altitude dayside convective clouds to high-altitude nightside stratospheric clouds. Finally, we calculated transit spectra, emission spectra and thermal phase curves of TRAPPIST-1b, c and d with H2O-rich atmospheres, and compared them to CO2 atmospheres and bare rock simulations. In a companion paper, we introduced a publicly-available pipeline to characterise exoplanet atmospheres through high-resolution spectroscopy. In this paper, we use this pipeline to study the biases and degeneracies that arise in atmospheric characterisation of exoplanets in near-infrared ground-based transmission spectroscopy. We inject synthetic planetary transits into sequences of SPIRou spectra of the well known M dwarf star Gl 15 A, and study the effects of different assumptions on the retrieval. We focus on (i) mass and radius uncertainties, (ii) non isothermal vertical profiles and (iii) identification and retrieval of multiple species. We show that the uncertainties on mass and radius should be accounted for in retrievals and that depth-dependent temperature information can be derived from high-resolution transmission spectroscopy data. Finally, we discuss the impact of selecting wavelength orders in the retrieval and the issues that arise when trying to identify a single species in a multi-species atmospheric model. This analysis allows us to understand better the results obtained through transmission spectroscopy and their limitations in preparation to the analysis of actual SPIRou data., Comment: Accepted in MNRAS

Atmospheric characterisation of exoplanets from the ground is an actively growing field of research. In this context we have created the ATMOSPHERIX consortium: a research project aimed at characterizing exoplanets atmospheres using ground-based high resolution spectroscopy. This paper presents the publicly-available data analysis pipeline and demonstrates the robustness of the recovered planetary parameters from synthetic data. Simulating planetary transits using synthetic transmission spectra of a hot Jupiter that were injected into real SPIRou observations of the non-transiting system Gl 15 A, we show that our pipeline is successful at recovering the planetary signal and input atmospheric parameters. We also introduce a deep learning algorithm to optimise data reduction which proves to be a reliable, alternative tool to the commonly used principal component analysis. We estimate the level of uncertainties and possible biases when retrieving parameters such as temperature and composition and hence the level of confidence in the case of retrieval from real data. Finally, we apply our pipeline onto two real transits of HD~189733 b observed with SPIRou and obtain similar results than in the literature. In summary, we have developed a publicly available and robust pipeline for the forthcoming studies of the targets to be observed in the framework of the ATMOSPHERIX consortium, which can easily be adapted to other high resolution instruments than SPIRou (e.g. VLT-CRIRES, MAROON-X, ELT-ANDES), Comment: Accepted in MNRAS

Linking cavitation and anatomy was found to be important for predictable outcomes in Focused-Ultrasound Blood-Brain-Barrier-Opening and requires high resolution cavitation mapping. However, cavitation mapping techniques for planning and monitoring of therapeutic procedures either 1) do not leverage the full resolution capabilities of ultrasound imaging or 2) place strong constraints on the length of the therapeutic pulse. This study aimed to develop a high-resolution technique that could resolve vascular anatomy in the cavitation map. Herein, we develop BP-ETACI, derived from bandpass sampling and dual-frequency contrast imaging at 12.5 MHz to produce cavitation maps prior and during blood-brain barrier opening with long therapeutic bursts using a 1.5-MHz focused transducer in the brain of C57BL/6 mice. The BP-ETACI cavitation maps were found to correlate with the vascular anatomy in ultrasound localization microscopy vascular maps and in histological sections. Cavitation maps produced from non-blood-brain-barrier disrupting doses showed the same cavitation-bearing vasculature as maps produced over entire blood-brain-barrier opening procedures, allowing use for 1) monitoring FUS-BBBO, but also for 2) therapy planning and target verification. BP-ETACI is versatile, created high resolution cavitation maps in the mouse brain and is easily translatable to existing FUS-BBBO experiments. As such, it provides a means to further study cavitation phenomena in FUS-BBBO.

Ultrasound Localization Microscopy (ULM) has proven effective in resolving microvascular structures and local mean velocities at sub-diffraction-limited scales, offering high-resolution imaging capabilities. Dynamic ULM (DULM) enables the creation of angiography or velocity movies throughout cardiac cycles. Currently, these techniques rely on a Localization-and-Tracking (LAT) workflow consisting in detecting microbubbles (MB) in the frames before pairing them to generate tracks. While conventional LAT methods perform well at low concentrations, they suffer from longer acquisition times and degraded localization and tracking accuracy at higher concentrations, leading to biased angiogram reconstruction and velocity estimation. In this study, we propose a novel approach to address these challenges by reversing the current workflow. The proposed method, Tracking-and-Localization (TAL), relies on first tracking the MB and then performing localization. Through comprehensive benchmarking using both in silico and in vivo experiments and employing various metrics to quantify ULM angiography and velocity maps, we demonstrate that the TAL method consistently outperforms the reference LAT workflow. Moreover, when applied to DULM, TAL successfully extracts velocity variations along the cardiac cycle with improved repeatability. The findings of this work highlight the effectiveness of the TAL approach in overcoming the limitations of conventional LAT methods, providing enhanced ULM angiography and velocity imaging.

In this paper, we propose a novel centralized Asynchronous Federated Learning (FL) framework, FAVANO, for training Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) in resource-constrained environments. Despite its popularity, ``classical'' federated learning faces the increasingly difficult task of scaling synchronous communication over large wireless networks. Moreover, clients typically have different computing resources and therefore computing speed, which can lead to a significant bias (in favor of ``fast'' clients) when the updates are asynchronous. Therefore, practical deployment of FL requires to handle users with strongly varying computing speed in communication/resource constrained setting. We provide convergence guarantees for FAVANO in a smooth, non-convex environment and carefully compare the obtained convergence guarantees with existing bounds, when they are available. Experimental results show that the FAVANO algorithm outperforms current methods on standard benchmarks.

Since the first proof-of-principle experiments 25 years ago, quantum metrology has matured from fundamental concepts to versatile and powerful tools in a large variety of research branches, such as gravitational-wave detection, atomic clocks, plasmonic sensing, and magnetometry. At the same time, two-photon interferometry, which underpins the possibility of entanglement to probe optical materials with unprecedented levels of precision and accuracy, holds the promise to stand at the heart of innovative functional quantum sensing systems. We report a novel quantum-based method for measuring the frequency dependence of the velocity in a transparent medium, i.e, the chromatic dispersion (CD). This technique, using energy-time entangled photons, allows straightforward access to CD value from the visibility of two-photon fringes recorded in a free evolution regime. In addition, our quantum approach features all advantages of classical measurement techniques, i.e, flexibility and accuracy, all in a plug-and-play system.

We explore the direct to indirect band gap transitions in MX$_2$ (M= Mo/W, X= S/Se) transition metal dichalcogenides heterobilayers for different system compositions, strains, and twist angles based on first principles density functional theory calculations within the G$_0$W$_0$ approximation. The obtained band gaps that typically range between 1.4$-$2.0 eV are direct/indirect for different/same chalcogen atom systems and can often be induced through expansive/compressive biaxial strains of a few percent. A direct to indirect gap transition is verified for heterobilayers upon application of a finite 16$^{\circ}$ twist that weakens interlayer coupling. The large inter-layer exciton binding energies of the order of $\sim$~250~meV estimated by solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation suggest these systems are amenable to be studied through infrared and Raman spectroscopy., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

Neptune's tropospheric winds are among the most intense in the Solar System, but the dynamical mechanisms that produce them remain uncertain. Measuring wind speeds at different pressure levels may help understand the atmospheric dynamics of the planet. The goal of this work is to directly measure winds in Neptune's stratosphere with ALMA Doppler spectroscopy. We derived the Doppler lineshift maps of Neptune at the CO(3-2) and HCN(4-3) lines at 345.8 GHz ($\lambda$~0.87 mm) and 354.5 GHz (0.85 mm), respectively. For that, we used spectra obtained with ALMA in 2016 and recorded with a spatial resolution of ~0.37" on Neptune's 2.24" disk. After subtracting the planet solid rotation, we inferred the contribution of zonal winds to the measured Doppler lineshifts at the CO and HCN lines. We developed an MCMC-based retrieval methodology to constrain the latitudinal distribution of wind speeds. We find that CO(3-2) and HCN(4-3) lines probe the stratosphere of Neptune at pressures of $2^{+12}_{-1.8}$ mbar and $0.4^{+0.5}_{-0.3}$ mbar, respectively. The zonal winds at these altitudes are less intense than the tropospheric winds based on cloud tracking from Voyager observations. We find equatorial retrograde (westward) winds of $-180^{+70}_{-60}$ m/s for CO, and $-190^{+90}_{-70}$ m/s for HCN. Wind intensity decreases towards mid-latitudes, and wind speeds at 40$^\circ$S are $-90^{+50}_{-60}$ m/s for CO, and $-40^{+60}_{-80}$ m/s for HCN. Wind speeds become 0 m/s at about 50$^\circ$S, and we find that the circulation reverses to a prograde jet southwards of 60$^\circ$S. Overall, our direct stratospheric wind measurements match previous estimates from stellar occultation profiles and expectations based on thermal wind equilibrium. We study the commensuration torques and layer sliding energetics of alternating twist trilayer graphene (t3G) and twisted bilayer graphene on hexagonal boron nitride (t2G/BN) that have two superposed moire interfaces. Lattice relaxations for typical graphene twist angles of $\sim 1^{\circ}$ in t3G or t2G/BN are found to break the out-of-plane layer mirror symmetry, give rise to layer rotation energy local minima dips of the order of $\sim 10^{-1}$ meV/atom at double moire alignment angles, and have sliding energy landscape minima between top-bottom layers of comparable magnitude. Moire superlubricity is restored for twist angles as small as $\sim 0.03^\circ$ away from alignment resulting in suppression of sliding energies by several orders of magnitude of typically $\sim 10^{-4}$ meV/atom, hence indicating the precedence of rotation over sliding in the double moire commensuration process., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Collisionless trapped-electron mode (CTEM) turbulence is an important contributor to heat and particle transport in fusion devices. The ITG/TEM fluid models are rarely treated analytically, due to the large number of transport channels involved, e.g. particle and ion/electron heat transport. The $\nabla T_e$-driven CTEM fluid model [Anderson et al, Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 48, 651 (2006)] provides a simplified model, in the regime where the density gradient drive is negligeable compared to the electron temperature gradient drive ($\nabla T_e$). This provides an interesting model to study mechanisms associated to linear waves, such as crossphase dynamics, and its possible role in the formation of $E\times B$ staircase. Here, the $\nabla T_e$-driven CTEM fluid model is rigourously derived from the more general ITG/TEM model, and its linear dynamics is first analyzed and compared with CTEM gyrokinetic simulations with bounce-averaged kinetic electrons, while nonlinear analysis is left for future work. From the Archean toward the Proterozoic, the Earth's atmosphere underwent a major shift from anoxic to oxic conditions, around 2.4 to 2.1 Gyr, known as the Great Oxidation Event (GOE). This rapid transition may be related to an atmospheric instability caused by the formation of the ozone layer. Previous works were all based on 1D photochemical models. Here, we revisit the GOE with a 3D photochemical-climate model to investigate the possible impact of the atmospheric circulation and the coupling between the climate and the dynamics of the oxidation. We show that the diurnal, seasonal and transport variations do not bring significant changes compared to 1D models. Nevertheless, we highlight a temperature dependence for atmospheric photochemical losses. A cooling during the late Archean could then have favored the triggering of the oxygenation. In addition, we show that the Huronian glaciations, which took place during the GOE, could have introduced a fluctuation in the evolution of the oxygen level. Finally, we show that the oxygen overshoot which is expected to have occurred just after the GOE, was likely accompanied by a methane overshoot. Such high methane concentrations could have had climatic consequences and could have played a role in the dynamics of the Huronian glaciations.

Photochemistry is a fundamental process of planetary atmospheres that regulates the atmospheric composition and stability. However, no unambiguous photochemical products have been detected in exoplanet atmospheres to date. Recent observations from the JWST Transiting Exoplanet Early Release Science Program found a spectral absorption feature at 4.05 $\mu$m arising from SO$_2$ in the atmosphere of WASP-39b. WASP-39b is a 1.27-Jupiter-radii, Saturn-mass (0.28 M$_J$) gas giant exoplanet orbiting a Sun-like star with an equilibrium temperature of $\sim$1100 K. The most plausible way of generating SO$_2$ in such an atmosphere is through photochemical processes. Here we show that the SO$_2$ distribution computed by a suite of photochemical models robustly explains the 4.05 $\mu$m spectral feature identified by JWST transmission observations with NIRSpec PRISM (2.7$\sigma$) and G395H (4.5$\sigma$). SO$_2$ is produced by successive oxidation of sulphur radicals freed when hydrogen sulphide (H$_2$S) is destroyed. The sensitivity of the SO$_2$ feature to the enrichment of the atmosphere by heavy elements (metallicity) suggests that it can be used as a tracer of atmospheric properties, with WASP-39b exhibiting an inferred metallicity of $\sim$10$\times$ solar. Measuring the metallicity and carbon-to-oxygen (C/O) ratio in exoplanet atmospheres is a fundamental step towards constraining the dominant chemical processes at work and, if in equilibrium, revealing planet formation histories. Transmission spectroscopy provides the necessary means by constraining the abundances of oxygen- and carbon-bearing species; however, this requires broad wavelength coverage, moderate spectral resolution, and high precision that, together, are not achievable with previous observatories. Now that JWST has commenced science operations, we are able to observe exoplanets at previously uncharted wavelengths and spectral resolutions. Here we report time-series observations of the transiting exoplanet WASP-39b using JWST's Near InfraRed Camera (NIRCam). The long-wavelength spectroscopic and short-wavelength photometric light curves span 2.0 - 4.0 $\mu$m, exhibit minimal systematics, and reveal well-defined molecular absorption features in the planet's spectrum. Specifically, we detect gaseous H$_2$O in the atmosphere and place an upper limit on the abundance of CH$_4$. The otherwise prominent CO$_2$ feature at 2.8 $\mu$m is largely masked by H$_2$O. The best-fit chemical equilibrium models favour an atmospheric metallicity of 1-100$\times$ solar (i.e., an enrichment of elements heavier than helium relative to the Sun) and a sub-stellar carbon-to-oxygen (C/O) ratio. Measuring the abundances of carbon and oxygen in exoplanet atmospheres is considered a crucial avenue for unlocking the formation and evolution of exoplanetary systems. Access to an exoplanet's chemical inventory requires high-precision observations, often inferred from individual molecular detections with low-resolution space-based and high-resolution ground-based facilities. Here we report the medium-resolution (R$\sim$600) transmission spectrum of an exoplanet atmosphere between 3-5 $\mu$m covering multiple absorption features for the Saturn-mass exoplanet WASP-39b, obtained with JWST NIRSpec G395H. Our observations achieve 1.46x photon precision, providing an average transit depth uncertainty of 221 ppm per spectroscopic bin, and present minimal impacts from systematic effects. We detect significant absorption from CO$_2$ (28.5$\sigma$) and H$_2$O (21.5$\sigma$), and identify SO$_2$ as the source of absorption at 4.1 $\mu$m (4.8$\sigma$). Best-fit atmospheric models range between 3 and 10x solar metallicity, with sub-solar to solar C/O ratios. These results, including the detection of SO$_2$, underscore the importance of characterising the chemistry in exoplanet atmospheres, and showcase NIRSpec G395H as an excellent mode for time series observations over this critical wavelength range., Comment: 44 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables.
