Abstract

Throughout the recent COVID-19 pandemic when government officials around the world ordered citizens to quarantine inside their homes, real-time measurements about the use of roads, hospitals, grocery stores, and other public infrastructure became vital to accurately forecast viral infection rates and inform future government decisions. Although mobile phone locations provide some information about community-level activity, dense distributed geophysical sensing of ground motions across a city are more complete and also natively anonymous. In this paper, we demonstrate how fiber-optic Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) connected to a telecommunication cable beneath Palo Alto, CA captured seismic and geodetic signals produced by vehicles during the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak and subsequent quarantine. We utilize DAS strain measurements of roadbed deformation caused by local cars and trucks in an automatic template matching detection algorithm to count the number of vehicles traveling per day over a two-month period around the timing of the San Francisco Bay Area shelter-in-place order. Using a segment of the optical fiber near a major grocery store on Sand Hill Road we find a 50% decrease in vehicle count immediately following the order, but data from near Stanford Hospital showed a far more subtle change due to on-going hospital activities. We compare the information derived from DAS measurements to other quarantine response metrics and find a strong correlation with the relative changes reported by Google and Apple using mobile phone data., Comment: Submitted to Science Advances

Abstract

Polyculture is a relevant practice for improving the sustainability of aquaculture, which raises interest in implementing it in a variety of production systems. However, polyculture is a complex approach that can result not only in complementarity among species but also competition among them and animal welfare issues. Potential polyculture benefits can be expected provided that compatibility and complementarity occur among the combined species. This places a premium on identifying the best species combinations for a given aquaculture system. Here, we developed a conceptual integrative workflow to standardise and plan the development of new fish polycultures. This workflow is designed to screen all possible combinations in a set of species based on three successive steps of assessment. Overall, these steps consider the compatibility and complementarity of co‐farmed species as well as stakeholder demands, sustainability and fish welfare. Step 1 consists of selecting the most promising compatible species combinations (i.e., 'prospective combinations') as a function of stakeholder opinion and expectations using databases and surveys. Step 2 validates the effectiveness of prospective combinations based on bioassays by considering species complementarity and animal welfare. Step 3 implements the best species combination(s) in aquaculture production, during which prototyping allows the sustainability of the resulting commercial production system to be studied. 18. Temporal Seismic Velocity Changes Associated With the Mw 6.1, May 2008 Ölfus Doublet, South Iceland: A Joint Interpretation From dv/v and GPS.

Abstract

In South Iceland, populated and agricultural areas are at risk of earthquakes due to their location within the South Iceland Seismic Zone (SISZ). In 2008, two moderate‐sized earthquakes (M5.8 and M5.9) occurred in Ölfus, the western end of this highly active transform zone. We analyze temporal seismic velocity variations (dv/v) related to the Ölfus earthquake doublet, using cross‐correlations of ambient noise in the frequency range of 0.1–3.0 Hz. The two mainshocks decrease the average velocity by 0.8% at the nearest stations. The co‐seismic changes are most noticeable from 0.7 to 1.7 Hz and affect a 40 km wide region. We present a first‐time comparison of dv/v to crustal deformation, seismicity, co‐seismic volumetric stress changes and reported PGA distribution for the Ölfus doublet. Ground accelerations caused by mainshocks at intermediate distances suggest that strong shaking‐related damage may contribute to the co‐seismic dv/v decrease. A rapid velocity increase (0.3%) in a month after the co‐seismic drop indicates crustal rock healing. We find 3‐months of post‐seismic decorrelation, followed by a nearly permanent velocity decrease (0.2%) confined to a shallow layer (1 km) until the end of the observation period. Afterslip and pore fluid effects in the near‐source region are likely to influence post‐seismic dv/v. We demonstrate that seismic interferometry can contribute to future fault‐zone monitoring operations in the SISZ by detecting small changes in velocity. Plain Language Summary: Strong earthquakes can occur in southwestern Iceland due to plate motions, posing a threat to human life and infrastructure. In 2008, two earthquakes struck the Ölfus region, causing widespread damage in the epicentral area. Sensitive instruments record naturally occurring ambient seismic signals which are originated from ocean waves, wind, and anthropogenic activity. A dramatic drop in seismic wave velocity is common during major quakes. The state‐of‐the‐art seismic methods based on these ambient waves allow us to detect minor changes in the velocity of seismic waves. We employ continuously recorded seismic data from three instruments to analyze for the first time such seismic velocity fluctuations related to moderate size earthquakes in Iceland. To interpret the complex mechanisms underlying these changes, we make use of multiple available data sets and compare them to our observations. Our findings suggest that seismic velocities decreased over a wide area, possibly due to earthquake‐induced ground shaking and rock damage. This study shows that velocity variations can be effectively measured with even sparsely placed seismometers and that they can be used in the future to monitor seismic zones in Iceland. Abstract

In this work, we study a Mediterranean cyclone, Helios, which took place during 9–11 February 2023 in the southeastern part of Sicily and Malta, by a multiparametric approach combining microseism results with sea state and meteorological data provided by wavemeter buoy, HF radar, hindcast maps and satellite SEVIRI images. The sub-tropical system Helios caused heavy rainfall, strong wind gusts and violent storm surges with significant wave heights greater than 5 m. We deal with the relationships between such a system and the features of microseism (the most continuous and ubiquitous seismic signal on Earth) in terms of spectral content, space–time variation of the amplitude and source locations tracked by means of two methods (amplitude-based grid search and array techniques). By comparing the location of the microseism sources and the area affected by significant storm surges derived from sea state data, we note that the microseism location results are in agreement with the real position of the storm surges. In addition, we are able to obtain the seismic signature of Helios using a method that exploits the coherence of continuous seismic noise. Hence, we show how an innovative monitoring system of the Mediterranean cyclones can be designed by integrating microseism information with other techniques routinely used to study meteorological phenomena. Abstract

International audience; Freshwater fish ponds are agro-ecosystems that provide important ecosystem services (ES) to territories, notably by hosting a recognized biodiversity. In France, the low profitability of freshwater ponds for fish production runs the risk that they will be abandoned, and thus that the ES they provide will disappear. The FEAMP SEPURE project brings together scientists from different backgrounds (agronomy, ecology, biology, modelling, environmental sciences) to link farmers' practices, economic and environmental performances and pond responses by monitoring water quality, phytoplankton, zooplankton, benthic macroinvertebrates, aquatic macrophytes and fish communities. Based on the analysis of the contexts and expectations expressed in Dombes, Lorraine and Brenne-Sologne, eleven scenarios with different species assemblages were co-designed with fish farmers. They took into account many parameters, such as the complementarity of species according to their trophic and behavioral traits, water availability, water temperature in summer, the existence of local and national markets, the presence of submerged vegetation, the depth of the ponds, feeding and liming practices, and the use of the ponds for other activities (e.g. hunting). In 10 production sites, farmers applied these scenarios, and practices and ecosystems were monitored. The new data generated by the SEPURE project should help support decision making for the future development of the pond sector and help maintain this economic activity in the territories.

30. Assessing similarity in continuous seismic cross-correlation functions using hierarchical clustering: application to Ruapehu and Piton de la Fournaise volcanoes

Abstract

SUMMARY Passive seismic interferometry has become a popular technique towards monitoring. The method depends on the relative stability of background seismic sources in order to make repeatable measurements of subsurface properties. Such stability is typically assessed by examining the similarity of cross-correlation functions through time. Thus, techniques that can better assess the temporal similarity of cross-correlation functions may aid in discriminating between real subsurface processes and artificial changes related variable seismic sources. In this study, we apply agglomerative hierarchical clustering to cross-correlation functions computed using seismic networks at two volcanoes. This allows us to form groups of data that share similar characteristics and also, unlike common similarity measures, does not require a defined reference period. At Piton de la Fournaise (La Réunion island), we resolve distinct clusters that relate both to changes in the seismic source (volcanic tremor onset) and changes in the medium following volcanic eruptions. At Mt Ruapehu (New Zealand), we observe a consistency to cross-correlation functions computed in the frequency band of volcanic tremor, suggesting tremor could be useful as a repeatable seismic source. Our results demonstrate the potential of hierarchical clustering as a similarity measure for cross-correlation functions, suggesting it could be a useful step towards recognizing structure in seismic interferometry data sets. Abstract

Microseism is the most continuous and ubiquitous seismic signal on the Earth and is caused by the interaction between the atmosphere, the hydrosphere and the Solid Earth. In literature, there are several studies that deal with the relationship between microseism and cyclonic activity considering in particular hurricanes, tropical cyclones and typhoons. However, the relationships between microseism and the small-scale tropical cyclones that occur in the Mediterranean Sea, called Medicanes, have never been analysed. For this reason, we considered the Medicane Apollo, which developed in the Ionian Sea and impacted the eastern part of Sicily during the period 25th October to 5th November 2021 causing heavy rainfall (> 400 mm/48h), strong wind gusts (104 km/h) and violent sea waves (significant wave height > 3.5 m). Furthermore, the heavy rainfall induced by the presence of Apollo, caused damage to infrastructure and agriculture forcing the Sicilian regional government to declare a state of emergency for 32 municipalities (in the provinces of Catania, Messina, Siracusa and Ragusa) that were mostly affected by the Medicane Apollo., peer-reviewed

Abstract

Archived seismograms recorded in the 20th century present a valuable source of information for monitoring earthquake activity. However, old data, which are only available as scanned paper-based images should be digitised and converted from raster to vector format prior to reuse for geophysical modelling. Seismograms have special characteristics and specific featuresrecorded by a seismometer and encrypted in the images: signal trace lines, minute time gaps, timing and wave amplitudes. This information should be recognised and interpreted automatically when processing archives of seismograms containing large collections of data. The objective was to automatically digitise historical seismograms obtained from the archives of the Royal Observatory of Belgium (ROB). The images were originallyrecorded by the Galitzine seismometer in 1954 in Uccle seismic station, Belgium. A dataset included 145 TIFF images which required automatic approach of data processing. Software for digitising seismograms are limited and many have disadvantages. We applied the DigitSeis for machine-based vectorisation and reported here a full workflowof data processing. This included pattern recognition, classification, digitising, corrections and converting TIFFs to the digital vector format. The generated contours of signals were presented as time series and converted into digital format (mat files) which indicated information on ground motion signals contained in analog seismograms. We performed the quality control of the digitised traces in Python to evaluate the discriminating functionality of seismic signals by DigitSeis. We shown a robust approach of DigitSeis as a powerful toolset for processing analog seismic signals. The graphical visualisation of signal traces and analysis of the performed vectorisation results shown that the algorithms of data processing performed accurately and can be recommended in similar applications of seismic signal processing in future related works in geophysical research.
