Abstract

Traditionally devoted to electron density profile measurement we show that fast frequency sweeping reflectometry technique can bring valuable and innovative measurements onto plasma turbulence. While fast frequency sweeping technique is traditionally devoted to electron density radial profile measurements we show in this paper how we can handle the fluctuations of the reflected signal to recover plasma density fluctuation measurements with a high spatial and temporal resolution. Large size turbulence related to magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) activity and the associated magnetic islands can be detected. The radial profile of the micro-turbulence, which is responsible for plasma anomalous transport processes, is experimentally determined through the fluctuation of the reflected phase signal., Comment: 12th International Congress on Plasma Physics, 25-29 October 2004, Nice (France)

Abstract

Background A better understanding of allergen-specific CD41 T cell responses is needed to help improve immunological therapies. Objective To compare CD41 T cell responses against seasonal (Bet v 1) and perennial (Der p 1, Der p 2) allergens. Methods Major histocompatibility complex class II peptide tetramers were engineered to monitor allergen-specific T cell responses. After in vitro expansion, tetramer1 cells were tested for surface markers using cytofluorometry. Cytokine gene expression and production were assessed using quantitative PCR and cytokine surface capture assays, respectively. Results Tetramer1 cells were detected in 19 patients allergic to house dust mites (HDM), seven allergic to birch pollen, 13 allergic to both and nine non-allergics with either an HLADRB1 0101, 0301, 1501 or an HLA-DPB10401 background. High-avidity T cells are elicited against the immunodominant Bet v 1141155 epitope, whereas broader low-avidity T cell responses are induced against Der p 11630,110124,171185 and Der p 22640,107121 epitopes. Responses against Bet v 1 involve effector (CDL62 low, CCR7 low) or central (CD62L1, CCR71) memory cells in allergic and non-allergic individuals, respectively, whereas central memory cells are mostly detected against mite allergens. In non-allergics, both mite and Bet v 1-specific T cells produce IFN-g and IL-10. In contrast to Bet v 1-driven Th2 responses, mite allergens induce highly polymorphic responses in allergics, including Th1, Th2/Th17 or mixed Th1/Th2 profiles. Mite-specific T cell frequencies in the blood remain in the range of 16104 CD41 T cells throughout the year. Conclusion Different memory CD4 Q2 1 T cell responses are elicited in the context of chronic vs. seasonal stimulation with the allergen(s). The heterogeneity in the patterns of CD41 T cell responses observed in patients allergic to HDMs should be taken into account for specific immunotherapy.

Abstract

Significant results on steady state control of the plasma parameters have been obtained with RF systems on Tore Supra. A sustained effort is under way to improve power transmission reliability. Developments of sources and antennas are in progress for future operation on Tore Supra with pulse length in the range of several hundreds of seconds.

Abstract

12th International Congress on Plasma Physics, 25-29 October 2004, Nice (France); The effects of the non-zero average density perturbation on phase and amplitude measured by reflectometry are presented. The non-zero average density perturbation on the phase variation can be seen as an index effect as soon as the shape of the density perturbation does not introduce spectral effects. Amplitude modulation in time follows generally the properties of the cut-off layer seen as a mirror but some specific situations produce a time modulation two times higher than the input time variation of the density perturbation as observed in Tore Supra. The introduction of secondary cut-off can exhibit this effect as shown in 2D simulations.

Abstract

The rotation of a cylindrical plasma column in a magnetic field has been studied in the linear section of the new plasma device Mistral. Under suitable conditions we observe a transition to a turbulent regime characterized by strong, bursty fluctuations at the edge of the column. The detection and the study of the spatio-temporal evolution of structures in the turbulent regime have been performed by means of a new enhanced conditional sampling technique. We have collected evidence of the development of a bent tail emanating from the plasma column. The charged particles inside the structure move along a spiral trajectory resulting in a net radial convection of the plasma to the walls. We show experimentally that a poloidal electric field is present inside the structures leading to the observed outwards radial E x B drift, in agreement with the expectations of recent and past theoretical works.

Abstract

A set of four reflectometers has been installed on Tore-Supra to measure the density profiles and the properties of density fluctuations with good spatial resolution. Fast swept X-mode reflectometers covering the range 50 to 155 GHz provide reliable and accurate measurements of the whole density profile from the edge on the outer side up to the core on the high field side even during large and fast profile evolution. Precise evaluation of the density profile is crucial for particle transport studies. A particular feature, a local peaking, has been observed in the core during ohmic discharge. Density fluctuations are measured with three different techniques. The classical fixed frequency method looks at large scale fluctuations (kr < 3 cm-1) . It measures the radial profile of fluctuations and can detect density perturbation associated to high frequency modes. A new method has been validated to measure the radial profile of small scale density fluctuations from fast FM-CW phase reflected signal. Abstract

The characteristics of the magnetized plasma obtained in a modified double-plasma device are presented. Primary ionizing electrons are produced by filament discharges in multipole devices located on either end of a magnetized plasma column. A very uniform magnetized plasma is produced in the column with a relatively small number of filaments by using coils to counterbalance the fringing field near the filaments. The obtained plasma is well suited for a large variety of wave experiments. The noise is maintained at a low level and the afterglow measurements reveal a very efficient confinement of the ionizing electrons, with a decay time of 0.2 ms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Tore Supra is equipped with two 20 μs fast sweep X-mode reflectometers operating between 50–110 GHz dedicated to density profile determination and an X-mode fixed frequency reflectometer operating between 105–155 GHz for density fluctuation measurements. Heterodyne and sine–cosine detection provide measurements of the reflected signal with high sensitivity. Operating profile reflectometer in burst mode (5 μs dead time between two consecutive sweeps) allows quasi-simultaneous measurements at fixed frequency over a broad frequency band. Thus, information on plasma fluctuations, such as magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) activity, up to 20 kHz as well as a radial localization of the modes is accessible. The temporal evolution of the q=1 rational surface during sawtooth crash activity has been recorded in the plasma center with high spatial resolution. In addition, a direct comparison between signals associated with a central MHD mode from both profile and fluctuation reflectometers, positioned at different toroidal angles, allows one to determine the plasma toroidal velocity. Abstract

Recent Lower Hybrid Current Drive (LHCD) experiments in TORE SUPRA and JET are reported. Large multijunction launchers have allowed the coupling of 5 MW to the plasma for several seconds with a maximum of 3.8 kw/cm2. Measurements of the scattering matrices of the antennae show good agreement with theory. The current drive efficiency in TORE SUPRA is about 0.2 x 10(20) Am-2/W with LH power alone and reaches 0.4 x 10(20) Am-2/W in JET thanks to a high volume-averaged electron temperature (1.9 keV) and also to a synergy between Lower Hybrid and Fast Magnetosonic Waves. At N(e)BAR = 1.5 x 10(19) m-3 in TORE SUPRA, sawteeth are suppressed and m = 1 MHD oscillations the frequency of which clearly depends on the amount of LH power are observed on soft x-rays, and also on non-thermal ECE. In JET ICRH produced sawtooth-free periods are extended by the application of LHCD (2.9 s. with 4 MW ICRH) and current profile broadening has been clearly observed consistent with off-axis fast electron populations. LH power modulation experiments performed in TORE SUPRA at N(e)BAR = 4 x 10(19) m-3 show a delayed central electron heating despite the off-axis creation of suprathermal electrons, thus ruling out the possibility of a direct heating through central wave absorption. A possible explanation in terms of anomlous fast electron transport and classical slowing down would yield a diffusion coefficient of the order of 10 m2/s for the fast electrons. Other interpretations such as an anomalous heat pinch or a central confinement enhancement cannot be excluded. Finally, successful pellet fuelling of a partially LH driven plasma was obtained in TORE SUPRA, 28 successive pellets allowing the density to rise to N(e)BAR = 4 x 10(19) m-3. This could be achieved by switching the LH power off for 90 ms before each pellet injection, i.e. without modifying significantly the current density profile.
