This work is on the Physics of the B Factories. Part A of this book contains a brief description of the SLAC and KEK B Factories as well as their detectors, BaBar and Belle, and data taking related issues. Part B discusses tools and methods used by the experiments in order to obtain results. The results themselves can be found in Part C. Please note that version 3 on the archive is the auxiliary version of the Physics of the B Factories book. This uses the notation alpha, beta, gamma for the angles of the Unitarity Triangle. The nominal version uses the notation phi_1, phi_2 and phi_3. Please cite this work as Eur. Phys. J. C74 (2014) 3026., Comment: 928 pages, version 3 (arXiv:1406.6311v3) corresponds to the alpha, beta, gamma version of the book, the other versions use the phi1, phi2, phi3 notation

We study the decay B- → J/ΨK -π+π- using 117×106 BB̄ events collected at the Y(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e+e- asymmetric-energy storage ring. We measure the branching fractions ℬ (B- → J/ΨK -π+π-) = (116±7(stat.) ±9(syst.))×10-5 and ℬ (B- → X(3872)K-) × ℬ (X(3872) → J/Ψπ+π -) = (1.28±0.41)×10-5 and find the mass of the X(3872) to be 3873.4±1.4 MeV/c2. We search for the h c narrow state in the decay B- → hcK -, hc → J/Ψπ+π- and for the decay B- → J/ΨD0π-, with D0 → K-π+. We set the 90% C.L. limits ℬ(B- → hcK-) × ℬ(h c → J/Ψπ+π-)

Using a data sample of 89 x 10(6) Upsilon(4S)-->BB decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B Factory at SLAC, we measure the B0(B (0))-->rho(+)rho(-) branching fraction as [30+/-4(stat)+/-5(syst)]x10(-6) and a longitudinal polarization fraction of f(L)=0.99+/-0.03(stat)+0.04-0.03(syst). We measure the time-dependent-asymmetry parameters of the longitudinally polarized component of this decay as C(L)=-0.17+/-0.27(stat)+/-0.14(syst) and S(L)=-0.42+/-0.42(stat)+/-0.14(syst). We exclude values of alpha between 19 degrees and 71 degrees (90% C.L.).

We present results of searches for 5-meson decays to K+π -π+ with the BABAR detector. With a data sample of 61.6 × 106 BB̄ pairs, we measure the branching fractions and 90% confidence-level upper limits averaged over charge-conjugate states (the first error is statistical and the second is systematic): B[B+ → K*0(892)π+] = (15.5 ± 1.8 -4.0+1.5) × 10-6, B[B+ → f0(980)K+, f0 → π+π -] = (9.2 ± 1.2-2.6+2.1) × 10 -6, B[B+ → D̄0π+, D̄0 → K+π-] = (184.6 ± 3.2 ± 9.7) × 10-6, B[B+ → ρ0(770)K+] < 6.2 × 10-6 and B[B+ → K+π-π+ nonresonant] < 17 × 10-6.

We have performed a search for the rare leptonic decay B+ --> mu+ nu_mu withdata collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance by the BABAR experiment at thePEP-II storage ring. In a sample of 88.4 million BBbar pairs, we find nosignificant evidence for a signal and set an upper limit on the branchingfraction BR(B+ --> mu+ nu_mu) < 6.6 x 10^{-6} at the 90% confidence level.

We present a measurement of the time-dependent CP-violating (CPV) asymmetries in B0-->K(0)(S)pi(0) decays based on 124x10(6) Upsilon(4S)-->BB decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B factory at SLAC. In a sample containing 122+/-16 signal decays, we obtain the magnitudes of the direct CPV asymmetry CK(0)(S)(pi(0))=0.40(+0.27)(-0.28)+/-0.09 and of the CPV asymmetry in the interference between mixing and decay SK(0)(S)(pi(0))=0.48(+0.38)(-0.47)+/-0.06 where the first error is statistical and the second systematic.

We search for B+/--->[K(-/+)pi(+/-)](D)K+/- decays, where [K(-/+)pi(+/-)](D) indicates that the K-/+pi(+/-) pair originates from the decay of a D0 or D (0). Results are based on 120x10(6) Upsilon(4S)-->BB decays collected with the BABAR detector at SLAC. We set an upper limit on the ratio R(Kpi) identical with[Gamma(B+-->[K(-)pi(+)](D)K+)+Gamma(B--->[K(+)pi(-)](D)K-)][Gamma(B+-->[K(+)pi(-)](D) / K+)+Gamma(B--->[K(-)pi(+)](D)K-)]D 0K-)/A(B--->D0K-)|DK will be difficult.

We measure the branching fraction for the flavor-changing neutral-current process B-->X(s)l(+)l(-) with a sample of 89x10(6) Upsilon(4S)-->BBmacr; events recorded with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e(+)e(-) storage ring. The final state is reconstructed from e(+)e(-) or micro(+)micro(-) pairs and a hadronic system X(s) consisting of one K+/- or K(0)(S) and up to two pions, with at most one pi(0). We observe a signal of 40+/-10(stat)+/-2(syst) events and extract the inclusive branching fraction B(B-->X(s)l(+)l(-))=(5.6+/-1.5(stat)+/-0.6(exp syst)+/-1.1(model syst))x10(-6) for ml(+)(l(-))>0.2 GeV/c(2).

We present a measurement of the time-dependent CP asymmetry for the neutral B-meson decay B0-->phiK0. We use a sample of approximately 114 x 10(6) B-meson pairs taken at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II B-meson factory at SLAC. We reconstruct the CP eigenstates phiK0S and phiK0L, where phi-->K+K-, K0S-->pi+pi-, and K0L is observed via its hadronic interactions. The other B meson in the event is tagged as either a B0 or Bbar0 from its decay products. The values of the CP-violation parameters are SphiK=0.47+/-0.34(stat)+0.08-0.06(syst) and CphiK=0.01+/-0.33(stat)+/-0.10(syst).

We measure the branching fraction for the charmless semi-inclusive process B --> eta'Xs, where the eta' meson has a momentum in the range 2.0 to 2.7 GeV/c in the upsilon4S center-of-mass frame and Xs represents a system comprising a kaon and zero to four pions. We find B(B --> eta'Xs) = [3.9 +/- 0.8(stat) +/- 0.5(syst) +/- 0.8(model)] x 10(-4). We also obtain the Xs mass spectrum and find that it fits models predicting high masses.

We present measurements of the branching fractions and charge asymmetries (where appropriate) of two-body B decays to η(′) K*, η(′) ρ, η(′) π0, ωπ0, and φπ0. The data were recorded with the BABAR detector at PEP-II and correspond to 89×106 BB pairs produced in e +e- annihilation through the Υ (4S) resonance. We find significant signals for two decay modes and measure the branching fractions B(B+→ηK*+)=(25.6 ±4.0±2.4) ×10-6 and B(B0→ηK*0) = (18.6±23±1.2)×10-6, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. We also find evidence with significance 3,5σ for a third decay mode and measure B(B+ →ηρ+)=(9.2±3.4±1.0)×10 -6. For other channels, we set 90% C.L. upper limits of B(B 0→ηρ0)

We report the observation of the B meson decay B+/- -->J/psietaK+/- and evidence for the decay B0-->J/psietaK0S, using 90 x 10(6) BB; events collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the SLAC PEP-II e+e- asymmetric-energy storage ring. We obtain branching fractions of B(B+/- -->J/psietaK+/-) = [10.8 +/- 2.3(stat) +/- 2.4(syst)] x 10(-5) and B(B0-->J/psietaK0S) = [8.4 +/- 2.6(stat) +/- 2.7(syst)] x 10(-5). We search for the new narrow mass state, the X(3872), recently reported by the Belle Collaboration, in the decay B+/- -->X(3872)K+/-,X(3872)-->J/psieta and determine an upper limit of B[B +/- -->X(3872)K+/- -->J/psietaK+/-] < 7.7 x 10(-6) at 90% confidence level.

We describe a measurement of the direct CP asymmetry between inclusive b-->s gamma and b-->s gamma decays. This asymmetry is expected to be less than 0.01 in the standard model, but could be enhanced up to about 0.10 by new physics contributions. We use a sample of 89 x 10(6) BB pairs recorded with the BABAR detector at SLAC PEP-II, from which we reconstruct a set of 12 exclusive b-->s gamma final states containing one charged or neutral kaon and one to three pions. We measure an asymmetry of A(CP)(b-->s gamma)=0.025+/-0.050(stat)+/-0.015(syst), corresponding to an allowed range of -0.06s gamma)

The inclusive B→Xcℓν branching fraction, B cℓν, the Cabibo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element, and other heavy quark parameters were determined from a simultaneous fit moments of the hadronic mass and lepton-energy distributions in semileptonic B-meson decays. Using data recorded with BABAR detector, the values were mesured as function of the lower limit on the lepton energy. The vaues for Bceν were extracted using heavy quark expansions (HQE) to the order of 1÷m b3. The stated errors were referred to the experimental, HQE and additional theoretical uncertainties.

Using events in which one of two neutral B mesons from the decay of an Y(4S) resonance is fully reconstructed, we set limits on the difference between the decay rates of the two neutral B mass eigenstates and on CP, T, and CPT violation in B0B̄0 mixing. The reconstructed decays, comprising both CP and flavor eigenstates, are obtained from 88 million Y(4S)→BB̄ decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory at SLAC. We determine six independent parameters governing oscillations (Δm,ΔΓ/Γ), CPT and CP violation (Re z,Im z), and CP and T violation (Im λCP,|q/p|), where λCP characterizes B0 and B̄0 decays to states of charmonium plus KS0 or KL0. The results are sgn(Re λCP)ΔΓ/ Γ=-0.008±0.037(stat.)±0.018(syst.)[-0.084,0.068], |q/p|=1.029±0.013(stat.)±0.011(syst.)[1.001,1.057], (Re λCP|λCP|)Re z=0.014±0.035(stat.) ±0.034(syst.)[-0.072,0.101], Im z=0.038±0.029(stat.)±0.025 (syst.)[-0.028,0.104]. The values inside square brackets indicate the 90% confidence-level intervals. The values of Im λCP and Δm are consistent with previous analyses and are used as cross checks. These measurements are in agreement with standard model expectations.

We study the decays B+ → ηcK+ and B0 → ηcK0, where the ηc is reconstructed in the KS0K ±π∓ and K+K- π0 decay modes. Results are based on a sample of 86 B B̄ pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the SLAC e+e- B Factory. We measure the product of branching fractions B(B+ → ηcK+) ×B(ηc→KK̄π)= (7.40±0.50±0.70)×10-5 and B(B 0→ηcK0) ×B(ηc→KK̄π)=(6.48±0.85±0.71) ×10-5, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic, In addition, we search for B → ηcK events with ηc→2(K+K-) and ηc→ φφ and determine the ηc decay branching fraction ratios B(ηc →(K+K-)) /B(ηc→KK̄π)=(2.3±0.7±0.6) ×10-2 and B(ηc→φφ) /B(ηc→KK̄π)=(5.5±1.4±0.5) ×10-2.

We present a measurement of CP-violating asymmetries in fully reconstructed B0-->D(*)+/-pi-/+ decays in approximately 88 x 10(6) upsilon(4S)-->BBmacr; decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B factory at SLAC. From a time-dependent maximum-likelihood fit we obtain the following for the CP-violating parameters: a=-0.022+/-0.038 (stat)+/-0.020 (syst), a*=-0.068+/-0.038 (stat)+/-0.020 (syst), c(lep)=+0.025+/-0.068 (stat)+/-0.033 (syst), and c*(lep)=+0.031+/-0.070 (stat)+/-0.033 (syst). Using other measurements and theoretical assumptions we interpret the results in terms of the angles of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa unitarity triangle, and find |sin((2beta+gamma)|>0.69 at 68% confidence level. We exclude the hypothesis of no CP violation [sin(2beta+gamma)=0] at 83% confidence level.

We have performed a search for the rare leptonic decay B+-->mu(+)nu(mu) with data collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance by the BABAR experiment at the PEP-II storage ring. In a sample of 88.4 x 10(6) BB pairs, we find no significant evidence for a signal and set an upper limit on the branching fraction B(B+-->my(+)nu(my))< 6.6 x 10(-6) at the 90% confidence level.

We report a measurement of the inclusive electron energy spectrum for semileptonic decays of B mesons in a data sample of 52 million γ(45)→BB̄ decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B-meson factory at SLAC. We determine the branching fraction, first, second, and third moments of the spectrum for lower cutoffs on the electron energy between 0.6 and 1.5 GeV. We measure the partial branching fraction to be B(B→Xeν,Ee>0.6 GeV)= [10.36±0. 06(stat.)±0.23(sys.)]%. © 2004 The American Physical Society.

We present a study of B--->D(0)(CP)K- decays, where D(0)(CP) is reconstructed in CP-even channels, based on a sample of 88.8 x 10(6) Upsilon(4S)-->BB decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e(+)e(-) storage ring. We measure the ratio of Cabibbo-suppressed to Cabibbo-favored branching fractions B(B--->D(0)(CP)K-)/B(B--->D(0)(CP)pi(-))=[8.8+/-1.6(stat)+/-0.5(syst)]x10(-2) and the CP asymmetry A(CP)=0.07+/-0.17(stat)+/-0.06(syst). We also measure B(B--->D0K-)/B(B--->D0pi(-))=[8.31+/-0.35(stat)+/-0.20(syst)]x10(-2) using a sample of 61.0 x 10(6) BB pairs.

Using events in which one of two neutral B mesons from the decay of an Upsilon(4S) meson is fully reconstructed, we determine parameters governing decay (DeltaGamma(d)/Gamma(d)), CP, and T violation (|q/p|), and CP and CPT violation (Re z,Im z). The results, obtained from an analysis of 88 x 10(6) Upsilon(4S) decays recorded by BABAR, are sgn(Re lambda(CP))DeltaGamma(d)/Gamma(d)=-0.008+/-0.037(stat)+/-0.018(syst)[-0.084,0.068],|q/p|=1.029+/-0.013(stat)+/-0.011(syst)[1.001,1.057],(Re lambda(CP)/|lambda(CP)|) Re z=0.014+/-0.035(stat)+/-0.034(syst)[-0.072,0.101],Im z=0.038+/-0.029(stat)+/-0.025(syst)[-0.028,0.104]. The values inside the square brackets indicate the 90% confidence-level intervals. These results are consistent with standard model expectations.

We present the result of a search for the charmless two-body baryonic decay B0→ppmacr; in a sample of 88 million Y(4S)→BB̄ decays collected by the BABAR detector at the SLAC PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory. We use Cherenkov radiation to identify protons cleanly, and determine the signal yield with a maximum-likelihood fit technique using kinematic and topological information. We find no evidence for a signal and place a 90% confidence-level upper limit of B(B0→ pp̄)

The mass m(eta(c)) and total width Gamma(eta(c))(tot) of the eta(c) meson have been measured in two-photon interactions at the SLAC e(+)e(-) asymmetric B Factory with the BABAR detector. With a sample of approximately 2500 reconstructed eta(c)-->K(0)(S)K+/-pi(-/+) decays in 88 fb(-1) of data, the results are m(eta(c))=2982.5+/-1.1(stat)+/-0.9(syst) MeV/c(2) and Gamma(eta(c))(tot)=34.3+/-2.3(stat)+/-0.9(syst) MeV/c(2). Using the same decay mode, a second resonance with 112+/-24 events is observed with a mass of 3630.8+/-3.4(stat)+/-1.0(syst) MeV/c(2) and width of 17.0+/-8.3(stat)+/-2.5(syst) MeV/c(2). This observation is consistent with expectations for the eta(c)(2S) state.

We present a measurement of the branching fraction of the decay B ±→χc0K± sample of 89×106 BB̄ pairs collected by the BABAR detector at the SLAC PEP-II asymmetric-energy B factory. The χc0 meson is reconstructed through its two-body decays toπ+ π- and K+K-. We measure B(B± → χc0K±) ×Β(χ c0→π+π-) = [1.32-027+0.28(stat)±0.26(syst)] × 10-6 and B(B ±→ χc0K±) × B(χc0 →K+K-) = [1.49 -0.34+0.36(stat) ±0.22(syst)] × 10 -6. Using the known values for the χc0 decays branching fractions, we combine these results to obtain Β(B ± →χc0K±) = (2.7±0.7)× 10-4. © 2004 The American Physical Society.
