Abstract

The interaction between a rapidly oscillating atomic force microscope tip and a soft material surface is described using both elastic and viscous forces with a moving surface model. We derive the simplest form of this model, motivating it as a way to capture the impact dynamics of the tip and sample with an interaction consisting of two components: interfacial or surface force, and bulk or volumetric force. Analytic solutions to the piece-wise linear model identify characteristic time constants, providing a physical explanation of the hysteresis observed in the measured dynamic force quadrature curves. Numerical simulation is used to fit the model to experimental data and excellent agreement is found with a variety of different samples. The model parameters form a dimensionless impact-rheology factor, giving a quantitative physical number to characterize a viscoelastic surface that does not depend on the tip shape or cantilever frequency., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

This work aims to provide new insights into the link between the growth mechanisms of functionalized plasma polymer films (PPFs) and the substrate temperature (TS). By means of AFM‐based techniques, it has been demonstrated that the mechanical behavior of the coatings is dramatically affected by TS and the precursor employed (i.e., 1‐propanethiol or 1‐propylamine). While propylamine‐based PPFs behave as hard elastic materials regardless of TS, propanethiol‐based PPFs evolve from viscous liquids to elastic solids with increasing TS. This behavior can be understood considering the glass transition temperature of PPF. For both precursors, the latter is correlated to the cross‐linking density controlled through the energy density brought by positive ions to the growing film. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Silver nanoparticles were synthesized via laser ablation in two different organic solvents (tetrahydrofuran and toluene). The influence of solvent choice on the production and behavior of silver nanoparticles dispersed in a polystyrene matrix was investigated. UV–Vis spectroscopy, ellipsometry and scanning probe microscopy techniques were used for characterization. The silver nanoparticles' optical properties were modified by the existence of a core-shell structure appearing in toluene-ablated particles. For both solvents and, in particular, for the toluene case, the particles showed good dispersion in the matrix. Additionally, the interphase behavior of the doped polymer films was influenced by the synthesis process, affecting the mechanical and optical (dielectric) properties. The observed results for the nanocomposite are attributed to the formation of a core-shell structure around the particles directly due to the ablation in organic solvents. These findings contribute to the understanding of silver/polystyrene nanocomposites and offer opportunities for developing tailored functional materials by using laser ablation in liquids. Abstract

[EN] Increasing energy autonomy and lowering dependence on lithium-based batteries are more and more appealing to meet our current and future needs of energy-demanding applications such as data acquisition, storage, and communication. In this respect, energy harvesting solutions from ambient sources represent a relevant solution by unravelling these challenges and giving access to an unlimited source of portable/renewable energy. Despite more than five decades of intensive study, most of these energy harvesting solutions are exclusively designed from ferroelectric ceramics such as Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 and/or ferroelectric polymers such as polyvinylidene fluoride and its related copolymers, but the large implementation of these piezoelectric materials into these technologies is environmentally problematic, related with elevated toxicity and poor recyclability. In this work, we reveal that fully biobased non-isocyanate polyurethane-based materials could afford a sustainable platform to produce piezoelectric materials of high interest. Interestingly, these non-isocyanate polyurethanes (NIPUs) with ferroelectric properties could be successfully synthesized using a solvent-free reactive extrusion process on the basis of an aminolysis reaction between resorcinol bis-carbonate and different diamine extension agents. Structure-property relationships were established, indicating that the ferroelectric behavior of these NIPUs depends on the nanophase separation inside these materials. These promising results indicate a significant potential for fulfilling the requirements of basic connected sensors equipped with low-power communication technologies.

42. Statistical investigations of an ENIG Nickel film morphology by Atomic Force Microscopy

Abstract

The morphology of a Nickel layer grown by an Electroless Nickel Immersion Gold (ENIG) technique used for microelectronics interconnections is determined by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) investigations. The root mean square (rms) roughness, determined over a scanned area is a function of the AFM scanned area size. In this work, we propose to consider the dynamic scale theory and the power spectrum density (PSD) analysis in order to perform a comprehensive determination of the surface properties of the ENIG nickel layer. Results highlight the existence of a first regime with a roughness exponent of 0.95 and a fractal dimension (DF) of the nickel film about 2.05. This case study is presented in order to propose further investigations. In fact, same experimental procedure should be performed in a magnetic shielded zone where a very low noise level is available such as the Low-Noise Underground Laboratory (LSBB) of Rustrel (France).

Abstract

Understanding the surface properties of hybrid perovskite materials is a key aspect to improve not only the interface properties in photovoltaic cells but also the stability against moisture degradation. In this work, we study the local electronic properties of two series of CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite films by atomic force microscopy-based methods. We correlate nanoscale features such as the local surface potential (as measured by Kelvin probe force microscopy) to the current response (as measured by conductive atomic force microscopy). CH3NH3PbI3 perovskites made using lead acetate as a precursor result in films with high purity and crystallinity and also result in heterogeneous local electrical properties, attributed to variations in the density of surface states. In contrast, when using lead iodide as a precursor, the perovskite surface exhibits a uniform distribution of surface states. This work also aims to understand the early stages of water-induced degradation at the surface of those films. Through high-precision exposure to small amounts of water vapor, we observe a higher stability for surfaces prepared with lead iodide precursors. More importantly, each precursor-based fabrication route is associated with either n- or p-type behavior of the films. These characteristics are determined by the type of surface states, which also and eventually preside over stability. This work should help discriminate between perovskite synthesis routes and improve their stability in photovoltaic cell applications.

44. Enrichissements superficiels sur l’alliage or-argent: Études des compositions chimiques locales par sonde atomique tomographique

Abstract

Dans le contexte de la recherche de catalyseurs actifs et sélectifs pour des réactions d’oxydation, l’or nanoporeux s’avère être un bon candidat. Sa synthèse se fait à partir d’alliages or-argent et la question de l’influence des résidus d’argent se pose lorsque que l’on cherche à expliquer la réactivité du catalyseur étant donné que l’or pur, même sous une forme nanoporeuse, reste un piètre catalyseur. La composition superficielle d’un alliage or-argent et son rôle en catalyse étant un sujet de controverse, l’objet de ce travail est d’identifier les paramètres physico-chimiques affectant la mobilité des atomes d’or et d’argent à la surface et au sein d’une matrice à priori solide. Pour ce faire, nous avons étudié les processus de ségrégation ayant lieu à la surface de catalyseurs nanoporeux d’Au-Ag lorsque ceux-ci sont soumis à différentes contraintes physico-chimiques. Les études ont été menées sur des pointes nanométriques d’Au-Ag dont la surface hémisphérique modélise parfaitement la surface courbe des ligaments de l’or nanoporeux.La première partie de ce projet consiste en la caractérisation de l’alliage étudié par microscopie. Nous y avons démontré que le matériau est formé de nombreux microcristaux empilés les uns sur les autres qui, bien que l’alliage soit habituellement considéré comme une solution solide homogène, sont chacun composés d’une quantité d’or et d’argent variable oscillante en gaussienne autour des 8 ± 2 %at. en argent. Les mesures LEAP (de Local Electrode Atom Probe) ont aussi mis en évidence que ces microcristaux individuellement sont cristallins, et s’ordonnent comme attendu selon le réseau cubique à faces centrées.
