RuNi nanoparticles (NP) were prepared by decomposition of [Ru(η4-C8H12)(η6-C8H10)] and [Ni(η4-C8H12)2] by H2 in the presence of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) at 85 °C using several Ru/Ni ratios. The nanoparticles display a segregated structure in which Ni is on the surface, as ascertained by wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS). The catalytic activity in the selective hydrogenation of furfural of these RuNi NP was correlated with the Ru content. High selectivity towards the partially hydrogenated product 2-(hydroxymethyl)furan (HF) was found when carrying out the reaction in tetrahydrofuran (THF). A different scenario was found when using a protic polar solvent, 1-propanol. Catalysts displaying Ru on the surface were able to hydrogenate the heteroaromatic ring, while those with Ni on the surface were highly selective towards the partially hydrogenated product. In addition, Ru surfaces were prone to catalyse the acetalization reaction in the presence of the alcoholic solvent, while the addition of Ni supressed this reactivity. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations performed on hydrogenated Ru nanoparticles (Ru55H70) show differences in the adsorption energies of several reagents, products, reaction intermediates, and solvents onto the Ru NP surface, which are in line with the experimental catalytic results. Colloidal Ru nanoparticles (NP) display interesting catalytic properties for the hydrogenation of (hetero)arenes as they proceed efficiently in mild reaction conditions. In this work, a series of Ru based materials was used in order to selectively hydrogenate quinaldine and assess the impact of the stabilizing agent on their catalytic performances. Ru nanoparticles stabilized with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and 1‐adamantanecarboxylic acid (AdCOOH) allowed to obtain 5,6,7,8‐tetrahydroquinaldine with a remarkable selectivity in mild reaction conditions by choosing the suitable solvent. The presence of a carboxylate ligand on the surface of the Ru NP led to an increase in the activity when compared to Ru/PVP catalyst. The stabilizing agent had also an impact on the selectivity, as carboxylate ligand modified catalysts promoted the selectivity towards 1,2,3,4‐tetrahydroquinaldine, with bulky carboxylate displaying the highest ones. Cobalt nanoparticles (CoNPs) exhibit quite unique magnetic, catalytic, and optical properties. In this work, imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) are successfully used to elaborate magnetically responsive suspensions of quite monodisperse CoNPs with diameters below 5 nm. The as-synthesized CoNPs adopt the noncompact and metastable structure of ϵ-Co that progressively evolves at room temperature toward the stable hexagonal close-packed allotrope of Co. Accordingly, magnetization curves are consistent with zero-valent Co. As expected in this size range, the CoNPs are superparamagnetic at room temperature. Their blocking temperature is found to depend on the size of the IL cation. The CoNPs produced in an IL with a large cation exhibit a very high anisotropy, attributed to an enhanced dipolar coupling of the NPs, even though a larger interparticle distance is observed in this IL. A hybrid material made of mononuclear organophosphorus polypyridyl ruthenium complexes covalently bonded to ruthenium nanoparticles has been synthesized via a one-pot organometallic procedure and finely characterized. The choice of suitable organometallic precursors, [Re2(C3H5)4] and [Ru(Me-Allyl)2COD] or [Ru(COD)(COT)], allows us to synthesize polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) stabilized bimetallic RuRe nanoparticles of ca. 1.3 nm with narrow size dispersity, displaying the hcp crystal structure and to control their chemical order: an alloy or Re rich surface. The structural features of these NPs were determined using complementary characterization techniques (TEM, HRTEM, STEM-HAADF, EDX, WAXS, FT-IR, MAS-NMR and ICP). In particular, surface state investigation based on CO adsorption and oxidation reactions provided useful information of the chemical order in these nanoparticles. The RuRe NPs were obtained as stable colloidal solutions or powders. Surface reactivity studies demonstrated that the alloy type RuRe/PVP NPs show better resistance to oxidation than the ones displaying a Re enriched surface and are more active towards CO dissociation than monometallic Re/PVP NPs as a result of the synergic effect between Ru and Re. Interestingly, the dissociation of CO was not observed with RuRe/PVP NPs displaying a Re enriched surface. Besides the synthetic aspect, this work highlights the crucial influence of the chemical order resulting from the choice of the metal sources in the control of the reactivity of ultra-small metal nanoparticles. Herein, we present a detailed study of the conversion of a nickel(II) diamide precursor to size-tunable, monodisperse nickel nanoparticles (NPs). The thermal decomposition of nickel(II) dioleylamide, synthesized either independently or in situ, resulted in the formation of Ni NPs without the coproduction of water. Mechanistic studies were conducted on the stability and reduction pathway of the NiII precursor, and on the consequent particle formation. Variations in the ratio of trioctylphosine (TOP) to nickel allowed size tunability, which resulted in nanoparticles that ranged in size from 4 to 11 nm in diameter. The DFT calculations support a mechanistic pathway that involves nickel reduction by imine formation. This water-free method was extended to the synthesis of water-sensitive M0 NPs (M=Fe, Co). Production of hydrogen from a renewable source that is water requires the development of sustainable catalytic processes. This implies, among others, developing efficient catalytic materials from abundant and low-cost resources and investigating their performance, especially in the oxidation of water as this half-reaction is the bottleneck of the water splitting process. For this purpose, NiFe-based nanoparticles with sizes ca. 3–4 nm have been synthesized by an organometallic approach and characterized by complementary techniques (WAXS, TEM, STEM-HAADF, EDX, XPS, and ATR-FTIR). They display a Ni core and a mixed Ni–Fe oxide shell. Once deposited onto FTO electrodes, they have been assessed in the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction under alkaline conditions. Three different Ni/Fe ratios (2/1, 1/1 and 1/9) have been studied in comparison with their monometallic counterparts. Pure and highly crystalline γ-Fe2O3 nanocrystals (NCs) are obtained when hydrolysis and oxidation of a FeII organometallic precursor are performed in successive steps. Their synthesis in pure alkylamine leads to NCs of about 6 nm. In aqueous solutions of poly(vinyl)pyrrolidone, such pristine NCs form aggregates of about 150 nm that exhibit a high transversal relaxivity (r2=466 mm-1 s-1) about four times higher than that of a commercial Feridex magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent. Consequently, they provide a significant decrease in the NMR signal at very short echo time (8 ms), which is of paramount importance in clinical practice because of the reduced duration of MRI measurements. Abstract: The preparation of superparamagnetic magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles by electro-precipitation in ethanol is proposed. Particle average size can be set from 4.4 to 9nm with a standard deviation around 20%. Combination of wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS), Electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and Mössbauer spectroscopy characterizations clearly identifies the particles as magnetite single-crystals (Fe3O4). Ultra-small monodisperse rhenium nanoparticles (Re NPs; ca. 1.0-1.2 nm) were easily prepared by reducing the organometallic complex [Re2(C3H5)4] under a dihydrogen atmosphere under mild reaction conditions (3 bar H2;120 °C). Amorphous calcium orthophosphates (ACP) are bioactive compounds presenting high interest as bone substitute. However, the synthesis of such metastable products requires special attention as they can rapidly evolve into a crystalline phase during the elaboration process. The resulting increased stability generally leads to less bioactive reactive materials. Among the various strategies developed to obtain stable form of ACP, the use of spray drying is an effective and reproducible route. Compared to previous works, this study aims to demonstrate for the first time the feasibility of ACP elaboration by spray drying directly from a single solution of selected precursors. Moreover, structuration of the spray-dried powders was determined at different length scales, demonstrating a hierarchical organization from nanometric clusters to particles aggregates. These complementary analyses highlighted a thorough mechanism of particles formation during processing. The effect of the initial composition of the solution was observed, and it was demonstrated that there is a correlation with the purity of the final product that may be modulated. In addition, ACP powders were found to be highly reactive in aqueous medium and their fast transformation into low crystalline apatite suggests a good suitability for biomedical use. The bottom‐up covalent assembly of metallic nanoparticles (NP) represents one of the innovative tools in nanotechnology to build functional heterostructures, with the resulting assemblies showing superior collective properties over the individual NP for a broad range of applications. The ability to control the dimensionality of the assembly is one of the major challenges in designing and understanding these advanced materials. Here, two new organic linkers were used as building blocks in order to guide the organization of Ru NP into two‐ or three‐dimensional covalent assemblies. The use of a hexa‐adduct functionalized C60 leads to the formation of 3D networks of 2.2 nm Ru NP presenting an interparticle distance of 3.0 nm, and the use of a planar carboxylic acid triphenylene derivative allows the synthesis of 2D networks of 1.9 nm Ru NP with an interparticle distance of 3.1 nm. The Ru NP networks were found to be active catalysts for the selective hydrogenation of phenylacetylene, reaching good selectivity toward styrene. Overall, we demonstrated that catalyst performances are significantly affected by the dimensionality (2D vs. 3D) of the heterostructures, which can be rationalize based on confinement effects. The preparation and structural characterization of an original Th peroxo sulfate dihydrate, crystallizing at room temperature in the form of stable 1D polymeric microfibres is described. A combination of laboratory and synchrotron techniques allowed solution of the structure of the Th(O2)(SO4)(H2O)2 compound, which crystallizes in a new structure type in the space group Pna21 of the orthorhombic crystal system. Particularly, the peroxide ligand coordinates to the Th cations in an unusual μ3‐η2:η2:η2 bridging mode, forming an infinite 1D chain decorated with sulfato ligands exhibiting simultaneously monodentate and bidentate coordination modes. In this work, we describe the synthesis of a new N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand, derived from a hybrid pyrazole-imidazolium scaffold, namely 1-[2-(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)ethyl]-3-((S)-1-phenylethyl)-3H-imidazol-2-ylidene (L). This ligand has been used as a stabilizer for the organometallic synthesis of palladium(0) nanoparticles (Pd NPs). L presents a better stabilizing effect than its pre-carbenic HLCl counterpart, allowing the formation of isolated Pd NPs while HLCl yields aggregated ones. Additionally, molecular Pd(ii) coordination compounds of L and HLCl were synthesized and characterized to better understand the coordination modes of these ligands. Both molecular and colloidal Pd systems have been further tested in catalytic C–C coupling processes. Three different types of reactions have been observed depending on the catalytic system: (i) the Suzuki–Miyaura reaction takes place with Pd molecular complexes; (ii) a secondary reaction, the dehalogenation of the substrate, is always detected and (iii) the C–C homocoupling between two molecules of bromoarenes is observed with colloidal catalysts. Enhancement of the thermoelectric properties of bismuth due to size reduction has prompted a large body of studies and recent interest in the nanochemistry of this material. The size control at the nanometer scale is complicated because of bismuth's low melting point and little known surface chemistry. We report herein an efficient synthetic method producing bismuth nanoparticles (Bi NPs) of sizes below 10 nm, and of rhombohedral structure based on transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) analysis. The nature and dynamics of the ligands at their surface have been investigated by infrared spectroscopy (IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. We demonstrate that alkynyl ligands, seldom used in nanochemistry, efficiently coordinate at the surface and afford stable Bi NPs that can be easily purified, leading to powders with high bismuth payload which can be redispersed into stable colloidal solutions. Core-shell RuPt (Ru core-Pt shell) and PtRu (Pt core-Ru shell) nanoparticles were prepared by decomposing in a two-step procedure a ruthenium ([Ru(COD)(COT)] (COD = 1,5-cyclooctadiene, COT = 1,3,5-cyclooctatriene)) and a platinum complex ([Pt2(dba)3] (dba = dibenzylideneacetone) or [Pt(CH3)2(COD)]) in the presence of 4-(3-phenylpropyl)pyridine (PPP) as a stabilizer and using different Ru/Pt ratios. The data obtained from a combination of several analyses (TEM, HRTEM, WAXS and IR) indicate that the soobtained nanoparticles present a core-shell structure. The catalytic performances of these bimetallic nanoparticles for the selective hydrogenation of trans-cinnamaldehyde were investigated, which provided interesting results as well as useful information to elucidate their structure and composition. Indeed, the catalytic results evidence that: (1) the combination of both metals led in some cases to a synergistic effect on the selectivity of the reaction, and (2) the structure and the composition affected the selectivity of the reaction. Ultrasmall FeRu bimetallic nanoparticles were prepared by co-decomposition of two organometallic precursors, {Fe[N(Si(CH3)3)2]2}2 and (η4-1,5-cyclooctadiene)(η6-1,3,5-cyclooctatriene)ruthenium(0) (Ru(COD)(COT)), under dihydrogen at 150 °C in mesitylene. A series of FeRu nanoparticles of sizes of approximately 1.8 nm and incorporating different ratios of iron to ruthenium were synthesized by varying the quantity of the ruthenium complex introduced (Fe/Ru=1:1, 1:0.5, 1:0.2, and 1:0.1). FeRu nanoparticles were characterized by TEM, high-resolution TEM, and wide-angle X-ray scattering analyses. Their surface was studied by hydride titration and IR spectroscopy after CO adsorption and their magnetic properties were analyzed by using a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). The FeRu nanoparticles were used as catalysts in the hydrogenation of styrene and 2-butanone. The results indicate that the selectivity of the nanoparticle catalysts can be modulated according to their composition and therefore represent a case study on fine-tuning the reactivity of nanocatalysts and adjusting their selectivity in a given reaction. The reactivity of two classes of ruthenium nanoparticles (Ru NPs) of small size, either sterically stabilized by a polymer (polyvinylpyrrolidone, PVP) or electronically stabilized by a ligand (bisdiphenylphosphinobutane, dppb) was tested towards standard reactions, namely CO oxidation, CO2 reduction and styrene hydrogenation. The aim of the work was to identify the sites of reactivity on the nanoparticles and to study how the presence of ancillary ligands can influence the course of these catalytic reactions by using NMR and IR spectroscopies. It was found that CO oxidation proceeds at room temperature (RT) on Ru NPs but that the system deactivates rapidly in the absence of ligands because of the formation of RuO2. In the presence of ligands, the reaction involves exclusively the bridging CO groups and no bulk oxidation is observed at RT under catalytic conditions. The reverse reaction, CO2 reduction, is achieved at 120 °C in the presence of H2 and leads to CO, which coordinates exclusively in a bridging mode, hence evidencing the competition between hydrides and CO for coordination on Ru NPs. The effect of ligands localized on the surface is also evidenced in catalytic reactions. Thus, styrene is slowly hydrogenated at RT by the two systems Ru/PVP and Ru/dppb, first into ethylbenzene and then into ethylcyclohexane. Selectively poisoning the nanoparticles with bridging CO groups leads to catalysts that are only able to reduce the vinyl group of styrene whereas a full poisoning with both terminal and bridging CO groups leads to inactive catalysts. The combination between a sulfonated diphosphine (L) and a cyclodextrin (CD) allowed the preparation of very stable water-soluble ruthenium nanoparticles (RuNPs) that displayed pertinent catalytic performances in hydrogenation of unsaturated substrates with a supramolecular control effect of the cyclodextrin. For comparison purpose, the RuNPs were produced by hydrogenation of the organometallic [Ru(1,5-cyclooctadiene)(1,3,5-cyclooctatriene)] complex under mild conditions (3 bar H2; room temperature) and in the presence of L or a L/CD mixture as stabilizer leading to Ru/L and Ru/L/CD systems, respectively. The so-obtained nanoparticles were fully characterized by complementary techniques. Interestingly, NMR investigations evidenced 1) the strong coordination of the sulfonated diphosphine ligand at the metallic surface and 2) in the presence of cyclodextrin, the formation of an inclusion complex between L and CD that modified the coordination mode of the diphosphine. The investigation of both RuNPs systems in biphasic hydrogenation of unsaturated substrates pointed out relevant differences in terms of reactivity, thus evidencing the influence of the supramolecular interaction at the metallic surface on the catalytic performances of the nanocatalysts. This work took advantage of the supramolecular properties of a cyclodextrin to modulate the surface reactivity of diphosphine-stabilized ruthenium nanoparticles and may open new opportunities in the field of nanocatalysis. The effectiveness of amine-borane as reducing agent for the synthesis of iron nanoparticles has been investigated. Large (2-4 nm) Fe nanoparticles were obtained from [Fe{N(SiMe3)2}2]. Inclusion of boron in the nanoparticles is clearly evidenced by extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy and Mössbauer spectrometry. Furthermore, the reactivity of amine-borane and amino-borane complexes in the presence of pure Fe nanoparticles has been investigated. Dihydrogen evolution was observed in both cases, which suggests the potential of Fe nanoparticles to promote the release of dihydrogen from amine-borane and amino-borane moieties. The control of nanocrystal structures at will is still a challenge despite the recent progress of colloidal synthetic procedures. It is common knowledge that even small modifications of the reaction parameters during synthesis can alter the characteristics of the resulting nano-objects. In this work we report an unexpected factor which determines the structure of cobalt nanoparticles. Nanocrystals of distinctly different sizes and shapes have resulted from stock solutions containing exactly the same concentrations of [Co{N(SiMe3)2}2(thf)] hexadecylamine and lauric acid. The reduction reaction itself has been performed under identical conditions. In an effort to explain these differences and to analyze the reaction components and any molecular intermediates we have discovered that the rate at which the cobalt precursor is added to the ligand solution during the stock solution preparation at room temperature becomes determinant by triggering off a nonanticipated side reaction which consumes part of the lauric acid the main stabilizing ligand transforming it to a silyl ester. Thus an innocent mixing apparently not related to the main reaction which produces the nanoparticles becomes the parameter which in fine defines nanocrystal characteristics. This side reaction affects in a similar way the morphology of iron nanoparticles prepared from an analogous iron precursor and the same long chain stabilizing ligands. The stabilization of ruthenium nanoparticles is achieved by using for the first time multiple donor coordination site-type ligands, the N-phosphanylamidines . These ligands, in which the donor sites are directly connected to one another, lead to the formation of small ruthenium nanoparticles in the size range 1.7–3.1 nm that display narrow size distributions and a hexagonal close packed crystalline structure of ruthenium bulk. The characterization of these new samples by a combination of techniques gives information on the surface state of the particles such as the coordination mode of the ligand and the presence of hydrides. CO molecules can also coordinate suggesting that the surface of the particles is not saturated. This work confirms the interest of screening novel ligands for the synthesis of metal nanoparticles and more particularly, of studying their coordination to probe metal nanoparticles' surface properties. Abstract: Wüstite particles (Fe1−y O) are synthesized using controlled hydrolysis at room temperature of [Fe(N(SiMe3)2)2] and stabilized by amine ligands. This method leads to 5nm pure wüstite particles. This phase is clearly identified by transmission electron microscopy and wide angle X-ray scattering. Distortion in the crystallographic structure has been demonstrated. Particular attention is paid on the Fe(III) formation. Moreover, a combination of Mössbauer spectroscopy and SQuID measurements, revealed that the particles are composed of an antiferromagnetic core surrounded by a ferromagnetic shell. According to the Néel theory, the Fe(III) and Fe(II) ions present in the particles are ferromagnetically coupled and the proportion of Fe(III) ions varies from 3.9 to 7.1% as a function of the amine ligand. Abstract: The influence of PtRu bimetallic particle size and composition on cinnamaldehyde selective hydrogenation has been investigated for the first time using well-defined catalysts based on carbon nanotubes support. Very high selectivity towards cinnamyl alcohol together with high activity have been obtained provided a high temperature treatment of the catalyst is performed. HRTEM, WAXS and EXAFS analyses permit us to conclude that the remarkable influence of this high temperature treatment on both activity and selectivity arises from different phenomena. First, a particle size and a structural effect have been evidence that permits to increase the selectivity. WAXS and EXAFS point the formation of alloyed PtRu nanoparticles. Second, the heat treatment allows the removal of oxygenated groups from CNT surface. This may increase the cinnamaldehyde adsorption capacity and decrease the activation barrier for diffusion of substrate and product on the CNT surface, thus contributing to an increase in the activity. Fe0.8Rh0.2 nanoparticles with an average size of 1.8 nm have been synthesized by simultaneous decomposition of stoichiometric quantities of Fe[N(Si(CH3)3)2]2 and Rh(C3H5)3 in mild conditions of temperature and hydrogen pressure, using hexadecylamine as stabilizer. These nanoparticles display a magnetization of 1.13 μB per iron atom, which is more than two times smaller than the bulk value with the same composition. No surface contamination with iron oxides was detected by Mössbauer spectroscopy. Superconducting quantum interference device and Mössbauer spectroscopy investigations reveal that the origin of this variation may be a core-shell Rh/Fe chemical arrangement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Self-organization of nanoparticles into two- and three-dimensional superlattices on a large scale is required for their implementation into nano- or microelectronic devices. This is achieved, generally after a size-selection process, through spontaneous self-organization on a surface, layer-by-layer deposition or the three-layer technique of oversaturation, but these techniques consider superlattices of limited size. An alternative method developed in our group involves the direct formation in solution of crystalline superlattices, for example of tin nanospheres, iron nanocubes or cobalt nanorods, but these are also of limited size. Here, we report the first direct preparation in solution of multimillimetre-sized three-dimensional compact superlattices of nanoparticles. The 15-nm monodisperse FeCo particles adopt an unusual short-range atomic order that transforms into body-centred-cubic on annealing at 500 ∘C.
