PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is ESA's M3 mission designed to detect and characterise extrasolar planets and perform asteroseismic monitoring of a large number of stars. PLATO will detect small planets (down to <2 R_(Earth)) around bright stars (<11 mag), including terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. With the complement of radial velocity observations from the ground, planets will be characterised for their radius, mass, and age with high accuracy (5 %, 10 %, 10 % for an Earth-Sun combination respectively). PLATO will provide us with a large-scale catalogue of well-characterised small planets up to intermediate orbital periods, relevant for a meaningful comparison to planet formation theories and to better understand planet evolution. It will make possible comparative exoplanetology to place our Solar System planets in a broader context. In parallel, PLATO will study (host) stars using asteroseismology, allowing us to determine the stellar properties with high accuracy, substantially enhancing our knowledge of stellar structure and evolution. The payload instrument consists of 26 cameras with 12cm aperture each. For at least four years, the mission will perform high-precision photometric measurements. Here we review the science objectives, present PLATO's target samples and fields, provide an overview of expected core science performance as well as a description of the instrument and the mission profile at the beginning of the serial production of the flight cameras. PLATO is scheduled for a launch date end 2026. This overview therefore provides a summary of the mission to the community in preparation of the upcoming operational phases.

The analysis of the available TESS light curves of $\alpha$ Sex (HD 87887) reveals low-frequency pulsations with a period of about 9.1 hours in this spectroscopic A0 III standard star. The IUE observations in December 1992 reveal large flux variations both in the far UV and in the mid UV which are accompanied by variations of the brightness in the V band recorded by the Fine Error Sensor on board IUE. The ultraviolet variability could be due to an eclipse by an hitherto undetected companion of smaller radius, possibly 2.5 R$_{\odot}$ but this needs confirmation by further monitoring possibly with TESS. An abundance determination yields solar abundances for most elements. Only carbon and strontium are underabundant and titanium, vanadium and barium mildly overabundant. Identification is provided for most of the lines absorbing more than 2% in the optical spectrum of $\alpha$ Sex. Stellar evolution modeling shows that $\alpha$ Sex is near the terminal-age main sequence, and its mass, radius and age are estimated to be $M = 2.57 \pm 0.32$ M$_{\odot}$, $R = 3.07 \pm 0.90$ R$_{\odot}$, $A = 385 \pm 77$ Myr, respectively., Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ on 14 Jun 2023; 9 pages and 11-page appendix

We report on a detailed abundance study of six bright, mostly southern, slowly rotating late B stars: HD~1279 (B8III), HD~99803 (B9V), HD~123445 (B9V), HD~147550 (B9V), HD~171961 (B8III) and HD~202671 (B5II/III), hitherto reported as normal stars. We compare them to the two classical HgMn stars $\mu$ Lep and $\beta$ Scl and to the superficially normal star, $\nu$ Cap. In the spectra of the six stars, the \ion{Hg}{2} line at 3984 \AA\ line is clearly seen and numerous lines of P, Ti, Mn, Fe, Ga, Sr, Y, and Zr appear to be strong absorbers. A comparison of newly acquired and archival spectra of these objects with a grid of synthetic spectra for selected unblended lines reveals large overabundances of P, Ti, Cr, Mn, Sr, Y, Zr, Ba, Pt and Hg and underabundances of He, Mg, Sc and Ni. The effective temperatures, surface gravities, low projected rotational velocities and the peculiar abundance patterns of the six investigated stars show that they are new chemically peculiar stars, mostly new HgMn stars, and are reclassified as such. The evolutionary status of these stars has been inferred and their ages and masses estimated. The two most massive objects, HD~1279 and HD~202671, might have evolved away from the main-sequence recently, the other stars are main-sequence objects. Determining the properties of solar-like oscillating stars can be subject to many biases. A particularly important example is the helium-mass degeneracy, where the uncertainties regarding the internal physics can cause a poor determination of both the mass and surface helium content. Accordingly, an independent helium estimate is needed to overcome this degeneracy. A promising way to obtain such an estimate is to exploit the so-called ionisation glitch, i.e. a deviation from the asymptotic oscillation frequency pattern caused by the rapid structural variation in the He ionisation zones. Although progressively becoming more sophisticated, the glitch-based approach faces problems inherent to its current modelling such as the need for calibration by realistic stellar models. This requires a physical model of the ionisation region explicitly involving the parameters of interest such as the surface helium abundance, $Y_s$. Through a thermodynamic treatment of the ionisation region, an analytical approximation for the first adiabatic exponent $\Gamma_1$ is presented. The induced stellar structure is found to depend on only three parameters including the surface helium abundance $Y_s$ and the electron degeneracy $\psi_\textrm{CZ}$ in the convective region. The model thus defined allows a wide variety of structures to be described and, in particular, is able to approximate a realistic model in the ionisation region. The modelling work conducted enables us to study the structural perturbations causing the glitch. More elaborate forms of perturbations than the ones usually assumed are found. It is also suggested that there might be a stronger dependence of the structure on both the electron degeneracy in the convection zone and on the position of the ionisation region rather than on the amount of helium itself.

Stellar parameters are required in a variety of contexts, ranging from the characterisation of exoplanets to Galactic archaeology. Among them, the age of stars cannot be directly measured, while the mass and radius can be measured in some particular cases (binary systems, interferometry). Stellar ages, masses, and radii have to be inferred from stellar evolution models by appropriate techniques. We have designed a Python tool named SPInS. It takes a set of photometric, spectroscopic, interferometric, and/or asteroseismic observational constraints and, relying on a stellar model grid, provides the age, mass, and radius of a star, among others, as well as error bars and correlations. We make the tool available to the community via a dedicated website. SPInS uses a Bayesian approach to find the PDF of stellar parameters from a set of classical constraints. At the heart of the code is a MCMC solver coupled with interpolation within a pre-computed stellar model grid. Priors can be considered, such as the IMF or SFR. SPInS can characterise single stars or coeval stars, such as members of binary systems or of stellar clusters. We illustrate the capabilities of SPInS by studying stars that are spread over the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. We then validate the tool by inferring the ages and masses of stars in several catalogues and by comparing them with literature results. We show that in addition to the age and mass, SPInS can efficiently provide derived quantities, such as the radius, surface gravity, and seismic indices. We demonstrate that SPInS can age-date and characterise coeval stars that share a common age and chemical composition. The mass of a star is the most fundamental parameter for its structure, evolution, and final fate. It is particularly important for any kind of stellar archaeology and characterization of exoplanets. There exists a variety of methods in astronomy to estimate or determine it. In this review we present a significant number of such methods, beginning with the most direct and model-independent approach using detached eclipsing binaries. We then move to more indirect and model-dependent methods, such as the quite commonly used isochrone or stellar track fitting. The arrival of quantitative asteroseismology has opened a completely new approach to determine stellar masses and to complement and improve the accuracy of other methods. We include methods for different evolutionary stages, from the pre-main sequence to evolved (super)giants and final remnants. For all methods uncertainties and restrictions will be discussed. We provide lists of altogether more than 200 benchmark stars with relative mass accuracies between $[0.3,2]\%$ for the covered mass range of $M\in [0.1,16]\,\msun$, $75\%$ of which are stars burning hydrogen in their core and the other $25\%$ covering all other evolved stages. Double-lined spectroscopic binaries (SB2s) are one of the main sources of stellar masses, as additional observations are only needed to give the inclinations of the orbital planes in order to obtain the individual masses of the components. For this reason, we are observing a selection of SB2s using the SOPHIE spectrograph at the Haute-Provence observatory in order to precisely determine their orbital elements. Our objective is to finally obtain masses with an accuracy of the order of one percent by combining our radial velocity (RV) measurements and the astrometric measurements that will come from the Gaia satellite. We present here the RVs and the re-determined orbits of 10 SB2s. In order to verify the masses we will derive from Gaia, we obtained interferometric measurements of the ESO VLTI for one of these SB2s. Adding the interferometric or speckle measurements already published by us or by others for 4 other stars, we finally obtain the masses of the components of 5 binary stars, with masses ranging from 0.51 to 2.2 solar masses, including main-sequence dwarfs and some more evolved stars whose location in the HR diagram has been estimated., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures and 10 others attached files; to be published in MNRAS

Over the course of its history, the Milky Way has ingested multiple smaller satellite galaxies. While these accreted stellar populations can be forensically identified as kinematically distinct structures within the Galaxy, it is difficult in general to precisely date the age at which any one merger occurred. Recent results have revealed a population of stars that were accreted via the collision of a dwarf galaxy, called \textit{Gaia}-Enceladus, leading to a substantial pollution of the chemical and dynamical properties of the Milky Way. Here, we identify the very bright, naked-eye star $\nu$\,Indi as a probe of the age of the early in situ population of the Galaxy. We combine asteroseismic, spectroscopic, astrometric, and kinematic observations to show that this metal-poor, alpha-element-rich star was an indigenous member of the halo, and we measure its age to be $11.0 \pm 0.7$ (stat) $\pm 0.8$ (sys)$\,\rm Gyr$. The star bears hallmarks consistent with it having been kinematically heated by the \textit{Gaia}-Enceladus collision. Its age implies that the earliest the merger could have begun was 11.6 and 13.2 Gyr ago at 68 and 95% confidence, respectively. Since the onset of the `space revolution' of high-precision high-cadence photometry, asteroseismology has been demonstrated as a powerful tool for informing Galactic archaeology investigations. The launch of the NASA TESS mission has enabled seismic-based inferences to go full sky -- providing a clear advantage for large ensemble studies of the different Milky Way components. Here we demonstrate its potential for investigating the Galaxy by carrying out the first asteroseismic ensemble study of red giant stars observed by TESS. We use a sample of 25 stars for which we measure their global asteroseimic observables and estimate their fundamental stellar properties, such as radius, mass, and age. Significant improvements are seen in the uncertainties of our estimates when combining seismic observables from TESS with astrometric measurements from the Gaia mission compared to when the seismology and astrometry are applied separately. Specifically, when combined we show that stellar radii can be determined to a precision of a few percent, masses to 5-10% and ages to the 20% level. The harvest of exoplanet discoveries has opened the area of exoplanet characterisation. But this cannot be achieved without a careful analysis of the host star parameters. The system of HD219134 hosts two transiting exoplanets and at least two additional non-transiting exoplanets. We used the VEGA/CHARA interferometer to measure the angular diameter of HD219134, leading to a stellar radius of $R_{\star}=0.726\pm0.014 R_{\odot}$. We also derived the stellar density from the transits light curves ($\rho_{\star}=1.82\pm0.19 \rho_{\odot}$), which finally gives a direct estimate of the mass ($M_{\star}=0.696\pm0.078 M_{\odot}$) with a correlation of 0.46 between $R_{\star}$ and $M_{\star}$. This new mass is smaller than that derived from the C2kSMO stellar evolutionary model, which provides a mass range of 0.755$-$0.810 ($\pm 0.040$) $M_{\odot}$. This allows us to infer the mass, radius and density of the two transiting exoplanets of the system. We then use an inference model to obtain the internal parameters of these two transiting exoplanets. Moreover, we find that planet $b$ and $c$ have smaller radii than previously estimated ($1.500\pm0.057$ and $1.415\pm0.049 R_{\oplus}$, respectively); this clearly puts these planets out of the gap in the exoplanetary radii distribution and validates their super-Earth nature. Planet $b$ is more massive than planet $c$, but possibly less dense. We investigate whether this could be caused by partial melting of the mantle and find that tidal heating due to non-zero eccentricity of planet $b$ may be powerful enough. (Abridged) The Maunakea Spectroscopic Explorer (MSE) is an end-to-end science platform for the design, execution and scientific exploitation of spectroscopic surveys. It will unveil the composition and dynamics of the faint Universe and impact nearly every field of astrophysics across all spatial scales, from individual stars to the largest scale structures in the Universe. Major pillars in the science program for MSE include (i) the ultimate Gaia follow-up facility for understanding the chemistry and dynamics of the distant Milky Way, including the outer disk and faint stellar halo at high spectral resolution (ii) galaxy formation and evolution at cosmic noon, via the type of revolutionary surveys that have occurred in the nearby Universe, but now conducted at the peak of the star formation history of the Universe (iii) derivation of the mass of the neutrino and insights into inflationary physics through a cosmological redshift survey that probes a large volume of the Universe with a high galaxy density. The Maunakea Spectroscopic Explorer (MSE) is a planned 11.25-m aperture facility with a 1.5 square degree field of view that will be fully dedicated to multi-object spectroscopy. A rebirth of the 3.6m Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope on Maunakea, MSE will use 4332 fibers operating at three different resolving powers (R ~ 2500, 6000, 40000) across a wavelength range of 0.36-1.8mum, with dynamical fiber positioning that allows fibers to match the exposure times of individual objects. MSE will enable spectroscopic surveys with unprecedented scale and sensitivity by collecting millions of spectra per year down to limiting magnitudes of g ~ 20-24 mag, with a nominal velocity precision of ~100 m/s in high-resolution mode. We present the discovery of TOI-197.01, the first transiting planet identified by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) for which asteroseismology of the host star is possible. TOI-197 (HIP116158) is a bright (V=8.2 mag), spectroscopically classified subgiant which oscillates with an average frequency of about 430 muHz and displays a clear signature of mixed modes. The oscillation amplitude confirms that the redder TESS bandpass compared to Kepler has a small effect on the oscillations, supporting the expected yield of thousands of solar-like oscillators with TESS 2-minute cadence observations. Asteroseismic modeling yields a robust determination of the host star radius (2.943+/-0.064 Rsun), mass (1.212 +/- 0.074 Msun) and age (4.9+/-1.1 Gyr), and demonstrates that it has just started ascending the red-giant branch. Combining asteroseismology with transit modeling and radial-velocity observations, we show that the planet is a "hot Saturn" (9.17+/-0.33 Rearth) with an orbital period of ~14.3 days, irradiance of 343+/-24 Fearth, moderate mass (60.5 +/- 5.7 Mearth) and density (0.431+/-0.062 gcc). The properties of TOI-197.01 show that the host-star metallicity - planet mass correlation found in sub-Saturns (4-8 Rearth) does not extend to larger radii, indicating that planets in the transition between sub-Saturns and Jupiters follow a relatively narrow range of densities. With a density measured to ~15%, TOI-197.01 is one of the best characterized Saturn-sized planets to date, augmenting the small number of known transiting planets around evolved stars and demonstrating the power of TESS to characterize exoplanets and their host stars using asteroseismology., Comment: 12 pages (excluding author list and references), 9 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in AJ. Context. The origin of the fossil magnetic fields detected in 5 to 10% of intermediate-mass main sequence stars is still highly debated. Aims. We want to bring observational constraints to a large population of intermediate-mass pre-main sequence (PMS) stars in order to test the theory that convective-dynamo fields generated during the PMS phases of stellar evolution can occasionally relax into fossil fields on the main sequence. Methods. Using distance estimations, photometric measurements, and spectropolarimetric data from HARPSpol and ESPaDOnS of 38 intermediate-mass PMS stars, we determined fundamental stellar parameters (Teff, L and v sin i) and measured surface magnetic field characteristics (including detection limits for non-detections, and longitudinal fields and basic topologies for positive detections). Using PMS evolutionary models, we determined the mass, radius, and internal structure of these stars. We compared different PMS models to check that our determinations were not model-dependant. We then compared the magnetic characteristics of our sample accounting for their stellar parameters and internal structures. Results. We detect magnetic fields in about half of our sample. About 90% of the magnetic stars have outer convective envelopes larger than ~25% of the stellar radii, and heavier than ~2% of the stellar mass. Going to higher mass, we find that the magnetic incidence in intermediate-mass stars drops very quickly, within a time-scale of the order of few times 0.1 Myr. Finally, we propose that intermediate-mass T Tauri stars with large convective envelopes, close to the fully convective limit, have complex fields and that their dipole component strengths may decrease as the sizes of their convective envelopes decrease, similar to lower-mass T Tauri stars., Comment: accepted by A&A

In a recent paper (Crida et al. 2018, accepted on April 19), we presented a method to derive the mass and radius of a transiting exoplanet and their intrinsic correlation, that we applied to 55 Cnc e. We wrote: "More precise observations of the transit would be very useful in this particular case and would allow to increase significantly the gain on the planetary density precision." Three months later, Bourrier et al. (2018) published new observations of the system. Additionally, Gaia's DR2 was released on April 25, 2018. The purpose of this research note is solely to implement these precise new data in our pipeline to provide an up-to-date result of our model. We find $R_p = 1.947\pm 0.038\,R_\oplus$ and $M_p = 8.59\pm 0.43\,M_\oplus$. We also double the precision on the planetary density ($\rho_p = 1.164\pm 0.062\,\rho_\oplus$), which allows us to refine the estimates for all interior parameters of interest. The second Gaia data release (Gaia-DR2) contains, beyond the astrometry, three-band photometry for 1.38 billion sources. We have used these three broad bands to infer stellar effective temperatures, Teff, for all sources brighter than G=17 mag with Teff in the range 3000-10 000 K (161 million sources). Using in addition the parallaxes, we infer the line-of-sight extinction, A_G, and the reddening, E[BP-RP], for 88 million sources. Together with a bolometric correction we derive luminosity and radius for 77 million sources. These quantities as well as their estimated uncertainties are part of Gaia-DR2. Here we describe the procedures by which these quantities were obtained, including the underlying assumptions, comparison with literature estimates, and the limitations of our results. Typical accuracies are of order 324 K (Teff), 0.46 mag (A_G), 0.23 mag (E[BP-RP]), 15% (luminosity), and 10% (radius). Being based on only a small number of observable quantities and limited training data, our results are necessarily subject to some extreme assumptions that can lead to strong systematics in some cases (not included in the aforementioned accuracy estimates). One aspect is the non-negativity contraint of our estimates, in particular extinction. Yet in several regions of parameter space our results show very good performance, for example for red clump stars and solar analogues. Large uncertainties render the extinctions less useful at the individual star level, but they show good performance for ensemble estimates. We identify regimes in which our parameters should and should not be used and we define a "clean" sample. Despite the limitations, this is the largest catalogue of uniformly-inferred stellar parameters to date. The characterization of exoplanets relies on that of their host star. However, stellar evolution models cannot always be used to derive the mass and radius of individual stars, because many stellar internal parameters are poorly constrained. Here, we use the probability density functions (PDFs) of directly measured parameters to derive the joint PDF of the stellar and planetary mass and radius. Because combining the density and radius of the star is our most reliable way of determining its mass, we find that the stellar (respectively planetary) mass and radius are strongly (respectively moderately) correlated. We then use a generalized Bayesian inference analysis to characterize the possible interiors of 55 Cnc e. We quantify how our ability to constrain the interior improves by accounting for correlation. The information content of the mass-radius correlation is also compared with refractory element abundance constraints. We provide posterior distributions for all interior parameters of interest. Given all available data, we find that the radius of the gaseous envelope is $0.08 \pm 0.05 R_p$. A stronger correlation between the planetary mass and radius (potentially provided by a better estimate of the transit depth) would significantly improve interior characterization and reduce drastically the uncertainty on the gas envelope properties., Comment: 5 figures, 16 pages (11 pages main text + 5 pages Appendix). Accurate stellar masses are requested in order to improve our understanding of stellar interiors, but they are still rather rare. Fortunately, the forthcoming Gaia Mission will provide astrometric measurements permitting the derivation of the orbital inclinations of nearby binaries which are also observed as double-lined spectroscopic binaries (SB2s) with ground-based telescopes. A programme of radial velocity (RV) measurements was initiated in 2010 with the Sophie spectrograph of the Haute-Provence observatory in order to derive accurate SB2 orbits for a large set of stars. Therefore, combined SB2+astrometric orbits will be derived thanks to Gaia, and masses with errors around 1~\% are expected for both components. The programme includes 70 SB2s, and the accurate SB2 orbits of 24 of them were already derived. In addition, two complementary programmes devoted to southern stars or to late-type dwarf stars were also initiated with the HERMES and the CARMENES spectrographs, respectively. Interferometric measurements were obained with the VLTI/PIONIER for 7 SB2s, and were taken from other sources for 4 others. Currently, combined "visual binary" (VB) +SB2 solutions were derived for 7 binaries, leading to the masses of the components and to the parallaxes. The advent of space-based missions like $Kepler$ has revolutionized the study of solar-type stars, particularly through the measurement and modeling of their resonant modes of oscillation. Here we analyze a sample of 66 $Kepler$ main-sequence stars showing solar-like oscillations as part of the $Kepler$ seismic LEGACY project. We use $Kepler$ short-cadence data, of which each star has at least 12 months, to create frequency power spectra optimized for asteroseismology. For each star we identify its modes of oscillation and extract parameters such as frequency, amplitude, and line width using a Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo `peak-bagging' approach. We report the extracted mode parameters for all 66 stars, as well as derived quantities such as frequency difference ratios, the large and small separations $\Delta\nu$ and $\delta\nu_{02}$; the behavior of line widths with frequency and line widths at $\nu_{\rm max}$ with $T_{\rm eff}$, for which we derive parametrizations; and behavior of mode visibilities. These average properties can be applied in future peak-bagging exercises to better constrain the parameters of the stellar oscillation spectra. We use asteroseismic data from the Kepler satellite to determine fundamental stellar properties of the 66 main-sequence targets observed for at least one full year by the mission. We distributed tens of individual oscillation frequencies extracted from the time series of each star among seven modelling teams who applied different methods to determine radii, masses, and ages for all stars in the sample. Comparisons among the different results reveal a good level of agreement in all stellar properties, which is remarkable considering the variety of codes, input physics and analysis methods employed by the different teams. Average uncertainties are of the order of $\sim$2\% in radius, $\sim$4\% in mass, and $\sim$10\% in age, making this the best-characterised sample of main-sequence stars available to date. Our predicted initial abundances and mixing-length parameters are checked against inferences from chemical enrichment laws $\Delta Y / \Delta Z$ and predictions from 3D atmospheric simulations. We test the accuracy of the determined stellar properties by comparing them to the Sun, angular diameter measurements, Gaia parallaxes, and binary evolution, finding excellent agreement in all cases and further confirming the robustness of asteroseismically-determined physical parameters of stars when individual frequencies of oscillation are available. Baptised as the Kepler dwarfs LEGACY sample, these stars are the solar-like oscillators with the best asteroseismic properties available for at least another decade. In anticipation of the Gaia astrometric mission, a large sample of spectroscopic binaries has been observed since 2010 with the SOPHIE spectrograph at the Haute--Provence Observatory. Our aim is to derive the orbital elements of double-lined spectroscopic binaries (SB2s) with an accuracy sufficient to finally obtain the masses of the components with relative errors as small as 1 % when the astrometric measurements of Gaia are taken into account. In this paper we present the results from five years of observations of 10 SB2 systems with periods ranging from 37 to 881 days. Using the TODMOR algorithm we computed radial velocities from the spectra, and then derived the orbital elements of these binary systems. The minimum masses of the components are then obtained with an accuracy better than 1.2 % for the ten binaries. Combining the radial velocities with existing interferometric measurements, we derived the masses of the primary and secondary components of HIP 87895 with an accuracy of 0.98 % and 1.2 % respectively., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, 6 tables, Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society (2016)

The recent detection of a convective core in a main-sequence solar-type star is used here to test particular models of dark matter (DM) particles, those with masses and scattering cross sections in the range of interest for the DM interpretation of the positive results in several DM direct detection experiments. If DM particles do not effectively self-annihilate after accumulating inside low-mass stars (e.g. in the asymmetric DM scenario) their conduction provides an efficient mechanism of energy transport in the stellar core. For main-sequence stars with masses between 1.1 and 1.3 Msun, this mechanism may lead to the suppression of the inner convective region expected to be present in standard stellar evolution theory. The asteroseismic analysis of the acoustic oscillations of a star can prove the presence/absence of such a convective core, as it was demonstrated for the first time with the Kepler field main-sequence solar-like pulsator, KIC 2009505. Studying this star we found that the asymmetric DM interpretation of the results in the CoGeNT experiment is incompatible with the confirmed presence of a small convective core in KIC 2009505., Comment: to appear on Physical Review D

Among the various methods used to age-date stars, methods based on stellar model predictions are widely used, for nearly all kind of stars in large ranges of masses, chemical compositions and evolutionary stages. The imperfect input physics of stellar models as well as the uncertainties on the initial chemical composition of stars are responsible for uncertainties in the age determination. In anticipation of the Gaia astrometric mission, a large sample of spectroscopic binaries is being observed since 2010 with the Sophie spectrograph at the Haute--Provence Observatory. Our aim is to derive the orbital elements of double-lined spectroscopic binaries (SB2s) with an accuracy sufficient to finally obtain the masses of the components with relative errors as small as 1% when the astrometric measurements of Gaia are taken into account. Simultaneously, the luminosities of the components in the Gaia photometric band G will also be obtained. Our observation program started with 200 SBs, including 152 systems that were only known as single-lined. Thanks to the high efficiency of the Sophie spectrograph, an additional component was found for 25 SBs. After rejection of 5 multiple systems, 20 new SB2s were retained, including 8 binaries with evolved primary, and their mass ratios were derived. In the context of CoRoT, Kepler, Gaia, TESS, and PLATO, precise and accurate stellar ages, masses and radii are of paramount importance. They are crucial to constrain scenarii of planetary formation and evolution.We aim at quantifying how detailed stellar modeling improves the accuracy and precision on age and mass of individual stars. We adopt a multifaceted approach where we examine how the number of observational constraints as well as the uncertainties on observations and on model input physics impact the age-dating and weighing. We modelled the exoplanet host-star HD52265, a MS, solar-like oscillator observed by CoRoT. We considered different sets of observational constraints (HR data, metallicity, seismic constraints). For each case, we determined the age, mass, and properties of HD52265 inferred from models, and quantified the impact of the models inputs. Our seismic analysis provides an age A=2.10-2.54 Gyr, a mass M=1.14-1.32 Msun, and a radius R=1.30-1.34 Rsun, which corresponds to uncertainties of 10, 7, and 1.5% respectively. Our seismic study provides constraints on surface convection, through the mixing-length found to be 12-15% smaller than the solar one. Because of helium-mass degeneracy, the initial He abundance is determined modulo the mass. The seismic mass of the exoplanet is found to be Mp sin i=1.17-1.26 MJup, much more precise than what can be derived by HR diagram inversion. We demonstrate that asteroseismology allows to improve the age accuracy compared to other methods. We emphasize that the knowledge of the mean properties of oscillations -as the large frequency separation- is not enough for deriving accurate ages. We need precise individual frequencies to narrow the age scatter due to model uncertainties. High precision photometry as performed by the CoRoT and Kepler satellites on-board instruments has allowed to detect stellar oscillations over the whole HR diagram. Oscillation frequencies are closely related to stellar interior properties via the density and sound speed profiles, themselves tightly linked with the mass and evolutionary state of stars. Seismic diagnostics performed on stellar internal structure models allow to infer the age and mass of oscillating stars. The accuracy and precision of the age determination depend both on the goodness of the observational parameters (seismic and classical) and on our ability to model a given star properly. They therefore suffer from any misunderstanding of the physical processes at work inside stars (as microscopic physics, transport processes...). Aims: We aim at characterizing the inward transition from convective to radiative energy transport at the base of the convective envelope of the solar-like oscillator HD 52265 recently observed by the CoRoT satellite. Methods: We investigated the origin of one specific feature found in the HD 52265 frequency spectrum. We modelled the star to derive the internal structure and the oscillation frequencies that best match the observations and used a seismic indicator sensitive to the properties of the base of the envelope convection zone. Results: The seismic indicators clearly reveal that to best represent the observed properties of HD 52265, models must include penetrative convection below the outer convective envelope. The penetrative distance is estimated to be $\sim0.95 H_P$, which corresponds to an extent over a distance representing 6.0 per cents of the total stellar radius, significantly larger than what is found for the Sun. The inner boundary of the extra-mixing region is found at $0.800\pm0.004 R$ where $R=1.3 R_\odot$ is the stellar radius. The characterization of the growing number of newly discovered exoplanets ---nature, internal structure, formation and evolution--- strongly relies on the properties of their host-star, i.e. its mass, radius and age. These latter can be inferred from stellar evolution models constrained by the observed global parameters of the host-star --- effective temperature, photospheric chemical composition, surface gravity and/or luminosity--- and by its mean density inferred from the transit analysis. Additional constraints for the models can be provided by asteroseismic observations of the host-star. The precision and accuracy on the age, mass and radius not only depend on the quality and number of available observations of the host-star but also on our ability to model it properly. Stellar models are still based on a number of approximations, they rely on physical inputs and data that can be uncertain and do not treat correctly all the physical processes that can be at work inside a star. We focus here on the determination of the age of HD 17156, an oscillating star hosting an exoplanet. Asteroseismology of stars in clusters has been a long-sought goal because the assumption of a common age, distance and initial chemical composition allows strong tests of the theory of stellar evolution. We report results from the first 34 days of science data from the Kepler Mission for the open cluster NGC 6819 -- one of four clusters in the field of view. We obtain the first clear detections of solar-like oscillations in the cluster red giants and are able to measure the large frequency separation and the frequency of maximum oscillation power. We find that the asteroseismic parameters allow us to test cluster-membership of the stars, and even with the limited seismic data in hand, we can already identify four possible non-members despite their having a better than 80% membership probability from radial velocity measurements. We are also able to determine the oscillation amplitudes for stars that span about two orders of magnitude in luminosity and find good agreement with the prediction that oscillation amplitudes scale as the luminosity to the power of 0.7. Saio et al. (2006) have shown that the presence of an intermediate convective zone (ICZ) in post-main sequence models could prevent the propagation of g-modes in the radiative interior and hence avoid the corresponding radiative damping. The development of such a convective region highly depends on the structure of the star in the mu-gradient region surrounding the convective core during the main sequence phase. In particular,the development of this ICZ depends on physical processes such as mass loss, overshooting (Chiosi & Maeder 1986, Chiosi et al. 1992, see also Godart et al., these proceedings) and convective instability criterion (Schwarzschild's or Ledoux's criteria). Asteroseismology provides powerful means to probe stellar interiors. The oscillations frequencies are closely related to stellar interior properties via the density and sound speed profiles. Since these are tightly linked with the mass and evolutionary state, we can expect to determine the age and mass of a star from the comparison of its oscillation spectrum with predictions of stellar models. Such a comparison suffers both from the problems we face when modeling a particular star (as the uncertainties on global parameters and chemical composition) and from our misunderstanding of processes at work in stellar interiors (as the transport processes that may lead to core mixing and affect the model ages). For stars where observations have provided precise and numerous oscillation frequencies together with accurate global parameters and additional information (as the radius or the mass if the star is in a binary system, the interferometric radius or the mean density if the star is an exoplanet host), we can also expect to better constrain the physical description of the stellar structure and to get a more reliable age estimation. After a survey of stellar pulsations, we present some seismic diagnostics that can be used to infer the age of a star as well as their limitations. We then illustrate the ability of asteroseismology to scrutinize stellar interiors on the basis of a few exemples. In the years to come, extended very precise asteroseismic observations are expected, in photometry or in spectroscopy, from ground-based (HARPS, CORALIE, ELODIE, UVES, UCLES, SIAMOIS, SONG) or spatial devices (MOST, CoRoT, WIRE, Kepler, PLATO). We present grids of stellar models and their associated oscillation frequencies that have been used by the CoRoT Seismology Working Group during the scientific preparation of the CoRoT mission. The stellar models have been calculated with the CESAM stellar internal structure and evolution code while the oscillation frequencies have been obtained from the CESAM models by means of the ADIPLS adiabatic oscillation programme. The grids cover a range of masses, chemical compositions and evolutionary stages corresponding to those of the CoRoT primary targets. This contribution is not about the quality of the agreement between stellar models computed by CESAM and CLES codes, but more interesting, on what ESTA-Task~1 run has taught us about these codes and about the input physics they use. The Cesam code is a consistent set of programs and routines which perform calculations of 1D quasi-hydrostatic stellar evolution including microscopic diffusion of chemical species and diffusion of angular momentum. The solution of the quasi-static equilibrium is performed by a collocation method based on piecewise polynomials approximations projected on a B-spline basis; that allows stable and robust calculations, and the exact restitution of the solution, not only at grid points, even for the discontinuous variables. Other advantages are the monitoring by only one parameter of the accuracy and its improvement by super-convergence. An automatic mesh refinement has been designed for adjusting the localisations of grid points according to the changes of unknowns. For standard models, the evolution of the chemical composition is solved by stiffly stable schemes of orders up to four; in the convection zones mixing and evolution of chemical are simultaneous. The solution of the diffusion equation employs the Galerkin finite elements scheme; the mixing of chemicals is then performed by a strong turbulent diffusion. We compare stellar models produced by different stellar evolution codes for the CoRoT/ESTA project, comparing their global quantities, their physical structure, and their oscillation properties. We discuss the differences between models and identify the underlying reasons for these differences. The stellar models are representative of potential CoRoT targets. Overall we find very good agreement between the five different codes, but with some significant deviations. We find noticeable discrepancies (though still at the per cent level) that result from the handling of the equation of state, of the opacities and of the convective boundaries. Using VLTI/VINCI angular diameter measurements, we constrain the evolutionary status of three asteroseismic targets: the stars $\delta$ Eri, $\xi$ Hya, $\eta$ Boo. Our predictions of the mean large frequency spacing of these stars are in agreement with published observational estimations. Solar-like oscillations are stochastically excited by turbulent convection. In this work we investigate changes in the acoustic oscillation power spectrum of solar-type stars by varying the treatment of convection in the equilibrium structure and the properties of the stochastic excitation model. We consider different stellar models computed with the standard mixing-length description by Bohm-Vitense (1958) and with a generalized formulation of the mixing-length approach by Gough (1976, 1977). We calculate the acoustic power generated by the turbulent convection which is injected stochastically into the acoustic pulsation modes. Large differences in the oscillation powers are obtained depending on the choice of the assumed convection formulation. We compare the accurate empirical mass-luminosity (M-L) relation based on five Hyades binary systems to predictions of stellar models calculated with various input parameters (helium, metallicity, age) or physics (mixing-length ratio, model atmosphere, equation of state, microscopic diffusion). Models based on a helium content Ysim0.28 inferred from the dydz enrichment law are more than 3sigma beyond the observations, suggesting that the initial helium abundance is lower than expected from its supersolar metallicity. With the photometric metallicity (FeH=0.144pm0.013 dex, Grenon (2000) we derive Y=0.255\pm0.009. Because of the (Y,FeH) degeneracy in the M-L plane, the uncertainty grows to Delta Y=0.013 if the metallicity from spectroscopy is adopted (FeH=0.14pm0.05 dex, Cayrel de Strobel et al 1997). We use these results to discuss the Hertzsprung-Russell (HR) diagram of the Hyades, in the (Mv,B-V) plane, based on the very precise Hipparcos dynamical parallaxes. Present models fit the tight observed sequence very well except at low temperatures. In the low mass region of the HR diagram sensitive to the mixing-length parameter (aMLT), the slope of the main sequence (MS) suggests that aMLT could decrease from a solar (or even supersolar) value at higher mass to subsolar values at low mass, which is also supported by the modeling of the vB22 M-L relation. We find that the discrepancy at low temperatures (B-V\gtrsim 1.2) remains, even if an improved equation of state or better model atmospheres are used. Finally, we discuss the positions of the stars at turn-off in the light of their observed rotation rates and we deduce that the maximum age of the Hyades predicted by the present models is sim650 Myr., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Pulsational properties of 1.8 M$_{\odot}$ stellar models covering the latest stages of contraction toward the main sequence up to early hydrogen burning phases are investigated by means of linear nonadiabatic analyses. Results confirm that pre-main sequence stars (pms) which cross the classical instability strip on their way toward the main sequence are pulsationally unstable with respect to the classical opacity mechanisms. For both pms and main sequence types of models in the lower part of the instability strip, the unstable frequency range is found to be roughly the same. Some non-radial unstable modes are very sensitive to the deep internal structure of the star. It is shown that discrimination between pms and main sequence stages is possible using differences in their oscillation frequency distributions in the low frequency range., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

The acoustic power injected by turbulent convection into solar-like oscillations depends on the details of the turbulent spectrum. A theoretical formulation for the oscillation power is developed which generalizes previous ones. The formulation is first calibrated on a solar model in such a way as to reproduce the solar seismic data. This allows to investigate different assumptions about the stellar turbulent spectrum. We next explore consequences of the assumed turbulent description for some potentially solar-like oscillating stars. Large differences are found in the oscillation power of a given star when using different turbulent spectra as well as in a star to star comparison. Acoustic power and oscillation amplitudes of radial oscillations computed for a solar model are compared with solar seismic observations. The oscillations are assumed stochastically excited by turbulence. The numerical computations are based upon a theoretical formulation of the power going into solar like oscillation modes as proposed by Samadi et al. (2000) in a companion paper. This formulation allows to investigate several assumptions concerning properties of the stellar turbulence. We find that the entropy source plays a dominant role in the stochastic excitation compared with the Reynold stress source in agreement with Goldreich et al. (1994). We consider several turbulent kinetic energy spectra suggested by different observations of the solar granulation. Differences between turbulent spectra manifest themselves by large differences in the computed oscillation powers at high oscillation frequency. Two free parameters which are introduced in the description of the turbulence enter the expression for the acoustic power. These parameters are adjusted in order to fit to the solar observations of the surface velocity oscillations. The best fit is obtained with the kinetic energy spectrum deduced from the observations of the solar granulation by Nesis et al. (1993); the corresponding adjusted parameters are found to be compatible with the theoretical upper limit which can be set on these parameters. During the last decade, the understanding of fine features of the structure and evolution of stars has become possible as a result of enormous progress made in the acquisition of high-quality observational and experimental data and of new developments and refinements in the theoretical description of stellar plasmas. The confrontation of high-quality observations with sophisticated stellar models has allowed many aspects of the theory to be validated, and several characteristics of stars relevant to Galactic evolution and cosmology to be inferred. This paper is a review of the results of recent studies undertaken in the context of the Hipparcos mission, taking benefit of the high-quality astrometric data it has provided. Successes are discussed, as well as the problems that have arisen and suggestions proposed to solve them.
