Patients consistently rate cancer-related fatigue (CrF) as the most prevalent and debilitating symptom. CrF is an important but often neglected patient concern, partly due to barriers to implementing evidence-based interventions. This study explored what an ideal intervention for CrF would look like from the perspectives of different stakeholders and the barriers to its implementation. Three participant populations were recruited: healthcare providers (HCPs; n = 32), community support providers (CSPs; n = 14), and cancer patients (n = 16). Data were collected via nine focus groups and four semi-structured interviews. Data were coded into themes using content analysis. Two main themes emerged around addressing CrF: "It takes a village" and "This will not be easy". Participants discussed an intervention for CrF could be anywhere, offered by anyone and everyone, and provided early and frequently throughout the cancer experience and could include peer support, psychoeducation, physical activity, mind–body interventions, and interdisciplinary care. Patients, HCPs, and CSPs described several potential barriers to implementation, including patient barriers (i.e., patient variability, accessibility, online literacy, and overload of information) and systems barriers (i.e., costs, lack of HCP knowledge, system insufficiency, and time). As CrF is a common post-treatment symptom, it is imperative to offer patients adequate support to manage CrF. Objective: Clinical fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) was recently defined by a group of experts during a Delphi study. Five criteria were agreed upon, namely: (a) high levels of preoccupation, (b) high levels of worry, (c) that are persistent, (d) hypervigilance and hypersensitivity to physical sensations that e) may result in functional impairment. No existing instruments comprehensively capture all these criteria for clinical FCR. Methods: To remedy this gap, a set of three patient‐reported outcome instruments including a one‐item screener, self‐report questionnaire, and semi‐structured clinical interview, named the Ottawa Clinical Fear of Recurrence instruments, were developed. To do so, the research team first conducted a literature review of potential items. Additional FCR experts discussed the content of the screener and interview. The self‐report's items were assessed for content validity by the same expert panel using Likert ratings and the Content Validity Index to narrow down the number of items. The three instruments were piloted with a group of cancer survivors to assess face validity following the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer recommendations. Results: The literature review and content validity assessment led to a final draft pre‐pilot of 23 potential items for the self‐report questionnaire. The instruments were piloted. Pilot study participants suggested changing wording and response options (particularly for the self‐report) for greater clarity. Conclusions: Based on the feedback received, minor modifications were made, mostly for the self‐report. Human muscle-specific RING fingers (MURFs) are members of the tripartite motif (TRIM) family of proteins characterized by their C-terminal subgroup one signature domain. MURFs play a role in sarcomere formation and microtubule dynamics. It was previously established that some TRIMs undergo post-translational modification by small ubiquitin-like modifier (SUMO). In this study, we explored the putative SUMOylation of MURF proteins as well as their interactions with SUMO. MURF proteins (TRIM54, TRIM55, and TRIM63) were not found to be SUMOylated. However, TRIM55 turnover by proteasomal and lysosomal degradation was higher upon overexpression of SUMO-3 but not of SUMO-1. Furthermore, it is predicted that TRIM55 contains two potential SUMO-interacting motifs (SIMs). We found that SIM1- and SIM2-mutated TRIM55 were more stable than the wild-type (WT) protein partly due to decreased degradation. Consistently, SIM-mutated TRIM55 was less polyubiquitinated than the WT protein, despite similar monoubiquitination levels. Using IF microscopy, we observed that SIM motifs influenced TRIM55 subcellular localization. In conclusion, our results suggest that SUMO-3 or SUMO-3-modified proteins modulate the localization, stability, and RING ubiquitin ligase activity of TRIM55. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cancer survivors often rely on the internet for health information, which has varying levels of readability, suitability, and quality. There is a need for high-quality online self-management resources for cancer survivors with fear of cancer recurrence (FCR). This study evaluated the readability, suitability, and quality of publicly available online FCR self-management resources. A Google search using FCR-related keywords identified freely available FCR self-management resources for cancer survivors in English. Resource readability (reading grade level), suitability, and quality were evaluated using relevant assessment tools. Descriptive statistics and cluster analysis identified resources with higher suitability and quality scores. Mean resource (n = 23) readability score was grade 11 (SD = 1.6, Range = 9–14). The mean suitability score was 56.0% (SD = 11.4%, Range = 31.0–76.3%), indicating average suitability and the mean quality score was 53% (SD = 11.7%, Range = 27–80%), indicating fair quality. A cluster of 15 (65%) resources with higher suitability and quality scores was identified. There were no significant associations between suitability or quality scores and the type of organisation that published the resources. Online FCR self-management resources varied in readability, suitability and quality. Resources with higher quality and suitability scores relative to other resources are identified for use by healthcare professionals and cancer survivors. Resources that are more culturally appropriate, with lower reading grade levels and detailed self-management strategies are needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The goals of the present study are (1) to identify sociodemographic and psychosocial predictors of human papillomavirus (HPV)-related stigma and (2) to examine the relationship between HPV-related stigma in predicting HPV vaccine decision-making among college males. Participants: Six hundred and eighty college males aged 18--26 from 3 Canadian universities were recruited from September 2013 to April 2014. Methods: Participants completed a self-report survey assessing HPV-related stigma, psychosocial predictors of HPV-related stigma, and HPV vaccine decision-making. The results were analyzed using variance analyses and linear regressions. Results: Ethnicity, province of residence, and perceived severity of HPV were found to significantly influence HPV-related stigma. In addition, HPV-related stigma was higher in those unaware of the availability of the HPV vaccine for males. Conclusions: Promotion efforts should concentrate on Asian minorities and should avoid HPV severity messaging, as these may lead to higher HPV-related stigma, which in turn may act as a barrier to vaccination.

Background: In Canada, two of five individuals will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime and one in four will die from this disease. Given the disparities observed in health research among Black individuals, we conducted a scoping review to analyze the state of cancer research in Canadian Black communities regarding prevalence, incidence, screening, mortality, and related factors to observe advances and identify gaps and disparities. Methods: A comprehensive search strategy was developed and executed in December 2021 across 10 databases (e.g., Embase). Of 3451 studies generated by the search, 19 were retained for extraction and included in this study. Results: Studies were focused on a variety of cancer types among Black individuals including anal, breast, cervical, colorectal, gastric, lung, and prostate cancers. They included data on incidence, stage of cancer at diagnosis, type of care received, diagnostic interval length, and screening. A few studies also demonstrated racial disparities among Black individuals. This research reveals disparities in screening, incidence, and quality of care among Black individuals in Canada. Conclusions: Given the gaps observed in cancer studies among Black individuals, federal and provincial governments and universities should consider creating special funds to generate research on this important health issue.
